2008-2009 UMass Secondary Application Thread

Question for everyone:
1) Why so many forms UMass??
2) Where can I get my ID copy notarized????

Linguini - I think you're from Boston, where did you go for the notarization? Also, how did your Brown interview go???

Can anyone post exactly what the status changes to when you are accepted? I haven't been accepted, but I am just confused because mine says "Accept Admission" above "Accept or Decline Admission" just like Chessodoc's, but I have a blurb underneath all of that, which says "If you have not been directed to this page..." blah blah blah. I'm assuming that the blurb must be what changes when you are actually accepted because mine has said "Accept Admission" above "Accept or Decline Admission" for months now. Also, UMass...please accept me 😍.

OMG! You are right!? To be accepted you have to have a link, where you can actually accept or deny them...I am so bummed. omg...😡+pity++pissed+:diebanana::diebanana::diebanana:

I feel like an idiot...jumped to conclusions too fast.

for those that got in: when was your interview date?
Let's try to start an accepted list to keep track

scrubslover - I: 10/21; A: 1/23
steve16 - I:11/18; A: 1/23

Chessodoc?

Others hear the good news?

Perhaps they did the October - Thanksgiving today? Anyone who interviewed post-turkey day hear back?

I am still waiting... interviewed 12/16

Interviewed that week...still waiting :bang: And it seems as though all who were accepted are pre-December.

Does anyone know their acceptance dates? When is the one after 01/23

Interviewed that week...still waiting :bang:

Oh Chesso I'm sorry! It was an easy mistake... it's obnoxious that they have that "Accept Admission" title at the top there. Just going along with the theme of the ridiculously confusing website though.

Is anyone else annoyed by the blatant typo on that page too? It reads "If you have not been directed to this page..blah blah". Well, I was directed to the page, so by the logic of that sentence, a decision SHOULD have been rendered. I cringe every time I see it.

Congrats scrubslover. And so sorry chesso, but your day will come - I think you interviewed recently? and just need to wait longer.

WOW what a crazy day. I am not sure how many more of these I can take..:poke:

Completely. And it annoys me especially on days when I am not accepted! I want to call them up and correct them and show them that I am smart enough for their school....How is something like that overlooked?

Sorry just venting.

BTW, johniewalker I know that they give out interview invites well into Feb....

I went to my bank - they notarize for free.

Yeah, second week of December. Anyone know the next day they are sending out acceptance?

I interviewed second week of December as well. It seems like we will have to wait until the third Friday of February. Goodluck

I interviewed the second week of december, too.

so glad i found this thread. hopefully some good news in feb.

Ok fellow UMass hopefuls. In the interest of providing some decent data to back up some of the hypotheses that have been flying around recently I have combed through every application year's cycle and compiled a list of everyone who was accepted to UMass, when that acceptance came, and when they interviewed.

I have a lot of free time after work I need to kill....

Anyway, without further ado, I present the results of my research, along with several of my thoughts, and some posts I found along the way that piqued my interest (cited by username, of course). Enjoy.

**Please note I did not include data for people who were waitlisted and then subsequently accepted, only those offered outright acceptances**

Thought #1: (These are in no particular order)
No waitlist notifications until April. You either get accepted or nothing until then. Waitlists seem to go out starting early April, and there's a flurry of them for a few weeks, then they die down and it's mostly rejections after that. Movement off the waitlist doesn't seem to happen until mid May.

Thought #2:
While there seems to be some correlation with interview dates vs notification dates, nothing appears to be set in stone. Many of the early interviews (September through November) appeared to hear by the January/February time frame. The December interviews are a mixed bag, some hearing January/February. Also not as much info as I'd like. The January and later interviews seemed to be fairly random, with no discernable pattern as to when they were notified. Some in February/March, but many well into April and May. All this being said, I saw several september/october interviews not get acceptances until March.

Thought #3:
I need a stiff drink. Reading 12,000 iterations of "Has anyone heard from Umass yet???!" is driving me batty.

Thought #4:
I feel like I'm beginning to have a personal relationship with several of these posters. Especially the ones who have applied more than one year in a row. I find myself rooting for them. The ouzo is working its magic nicely.

Thought #5:
I think most of us have a lot of waiting left to do. Truly, if half the class gets in off the waitlist, which isn't built until April, then winter is going to really drag on here. Sigh. I hope people found this useful, several hours of combing through haphazard posting is a bit dry. So there you have it folks, proof that you really have absolutely NO IDEA when Umass will get back to you, but that little voice in your heard saying it won't be until April...is probably right. Happy Monday my friends, there won't likely be another committee meeting for at least two more weeks. So hopefully that will save you a few Fridays worth of stress.

If you were unlucky and got a procrastinator, then your file may not have been submitted to the ADCOM until a few months after the interview, which is why some people hear really fast and others wait a long time...."

Hi All!

So I'm in my second year of applications and generally just check this to see all those lucky people who apply and get in. bing bang boom. 😛

Last year I applied to a number of schools, got my applications in a bit late and got an interview at UMass. The interview was great and I was placed on the waiting list and later rejected.

This year after much debate I reapplied to just UMass. My application was finalized and submitted in late September (again, a bit later than it should have been). I was just notified on Friday 1/23 that I have been invited for an interview on 2/11.

Hoping for some sort of good outcome. I really want to be there. Cross your fingers for me! And good luck to everyone else!

Thompa, I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope you get in so I have the chance to meet someone in existence who is more neurotic than me 🙂

Seriously, you rock.

Also, as a die-hard Red Sox fan, I really enjoyed the bolded post. SO true.

Haha, I know! I almost snorted my Ouzo when I found Humorous Post #1. Thanks for the props, I'm glad you appreciated my neuroticism/OCD. I recently had the awful epiphany that I'm horribly bored doing a 9-5 job and very much need to go back to school. My days are predictably boring and my nights filled with TV...less filled now that I've completed watching all 4 seasons of House....and all 7 seasons of the West Wing. I WANT TO GO TO MED SCHOOL!

PS I take it you're definitely going to UMass then Scrubs?

I feel you. 9-5 jobs leave a lot of time for tv... and if it wasn't obvious, I'm kind of addicted to Scrubs and have been watching far too many episodes for my own good. (Except that I'm severely disappointed with the new season.)

I'm not definitely going to UMass, but it's likely. I'm still waiting on my top choice, but of the schools I've gotten into so far, UMass is definitely number one. If you get in, will you definitely go?

Most likely. I'm still waiting to hear about interviews from about 8 other schools, so we'll see if anything positive develops along that front, but I'd have to say Emory would probably be the only school on my list at the moment that I'd take over UMass.

Tthompa you are completely awesome and I LOVE your post. I hope I do get to meet you someday.

Thanks for the love jka, I'm glad you appreciated it.

Also, to anyone lurking on this board but doesn't have an account yet...git off yer lazy butt and post, especially if you've been accepted. Not only will you get a hearty and ego-boosting congratulations from a bunch of people you don't even know, it'll help give everyone a better idea what the UMass admissions picture looks like.
*steps off his soap box*

Alright fellow Bostonians, there is a lot of snow outside, and I am still at work even though all our patients have cancelled!

Some entertainment would be very appreciated :claps:Thanks!

Yes, and dare I say, in case you are not familiar with SDN etiquette, I think it is always better to introduce yourself before you are accepted, if possible...

Now I will step off my soap box!

By the way, I rented a video from blockbuster online called "A Walk to Beautiful" by NOVA. It was so inspiring! It was about women in Ethiopa who lose their babies during very long labors, and they lose their continence at the same time. Basically, they become ostracized in their communities. But there is a hospital that repairs the holes in their bladders and basically gives them back their lives. The doctors were giddy because they had the privilege of performing such life-changing operations. So, if you ever need a reason to remember why you might want to be a doctor...

Not that I don't have a bunch of deadlines here at work.. but I noticed there was a good chunk of data missing from the list from 07-08 season. Someone out there I am sure will clean this into some master file... I'm still waiting for somebody to do actual stats with it...

How's this for a deal, put this into an excel file and I'll run it through SYSTAT to determine if any of the data is statistically significant 😉 send me a message if you are actually neurotic enough to do that.

Ok here is 2007-2008:

i second this! although the best "entertainment," of course, would be an acceptance.

Y'know what's even better than being at work when there should be a snow day? Give up? Having a fire drill at work and having to stand outside for 40 minutes when there should be a snow day! 😡 Bad start to a day!

Umm, Linguini... I had a fire drill today to at 9:15am... I have a slight feeling we work in the same building.

Thanks for this envirodoc!! I was wondering about the specific dates of the "flurries" of acceptances and waitlists we'd been talking about. It sounds like the real panic is going to set in mid-April when the acceptances are dying down, and the not-so-pleasant news is starting to roll in. T-minus two and a half months til freakout time.

Has anybody ventured outside recently?

In the span of 1 hour I was snowed on, sleeted on and rained on. And the salt guy apparently decided that I was a patch of ice he should attack.... Woooo Boston weather!

Another hopefully UMass-er here... I'm stuck inside with both strep throat and snow. We have about 4" on the ground right now and are expecting 10-20". Its pretty much whiteout outside! As a result I'm half working on my thesis, half watching Discovery Health, obvi. Stay warm, New Englanders!

Thompa, you are hilarious!

It is definitely gross outside...and I'm a dog walker for extra cash, today seriously sucked.

Aww, feel better!! Strep throat is the worst.

And 10-20"?! You must be way up in northern Mass. Good luck!

I'm sure someone has already answered this, but did UMass definately improve the increased class size? And if so, does anyone know if they will be accepting more people right away or just pulling more off the waitlist?

I was told at my interview day that the class was increased to 125 for our year. I don't know how they'll be filling these extra spots though.

I also heard that they increased the size for the class of 2013. Since UMass can't over-accept, I assume that at one point they will have 125 offers on the table (i.e. they will accept more people right away this year).

Did they have 100 last year or a little more than 100?

For a school with ~7-800 apps, ~350-400 interviews to have 25% more seats is great news.

If I remember correctly, they accept around 200 or so for a class of 100 (and if someone has better info post please)... so 25% more seats = up to 50 more acceptances??

all of this does not alter the fact that we'll mostly have to wait until April to get word of course...

Damn you in-staters! 🙂 I am OOS. Hopefully I am one of the four OOS students they accept :ninja:

Here is from US News and World:

Total admissions data:
803 applied, 470 interviewed, 183 were accepted, 103 enrolled

In-state admissions data:
729 applied, 451 interviewed, 177 were accepted, 100 enrolled

Out-state admissions data:
74 applied, 19 interviewed, 6 were accepted, 3 enrolled

Actually I have been told this year 200 applied OOS, they interview ~35, and are counting to enroll 3-4....I think all OOS are doing MD/PhD

Like has been said above, the class size IS increasing to 125. When I was at my interview I was told that this increase has to be approved by the legislature...or some subcomittee. Anyway, whatever legal body is in charge of approving this increase in class size won't be meeting/approving until August. Which means there will be several seats that won't be open until well into the next application cycle. Since they can't overbook, no one will receive an acceptance for those seats until they actually exist....which isn't for a very long time from now. Again, this is what I was told, and I could have misheard, but I'd like to think I was paying attention at my only med school interview thus far.

Y'know what's even better than being at work when there should be a snow day? Give up? Having a fire drill at work and having to stand outside for 40 minutes when there should be a snow day! 😡 Bad start to a day!

How about taking a histo exam when there should be a snow day? Every other school and college in Worcester was closed today, but not us!

Hang in there, guys. UMass can make you wait a LONG time before they tell you anything, but a year from now you could be sitting in the library with half your class cramming for another exam and complaining about the fact that this school NEVER closes for weather. (Okay, stopping to remind myself that I really am living the dream.)

For those class sizes, 103 was two years ago. This year (class of 2012) is 114, and they've been telling us all along that they're going up to 125 for 2013.

That's right, the 3-4 OOS students will be MD/PhD - you can't even apply to the MD program if you aren't a Mass resident.

Hello, I'm new to the forum. Just thought I'd add that I interviewed 12/9, and am still waiting to hear. (Seems like others are in the same boat...) Good luck to all :luck:
