Did anyone else get WashU's little mail package with the Study of Medicine magazine in it? I have to say, I am becoming more and more impressed with this school.

Wash U has no essay, so immediately, for that one.

As for the rest, I think the consensus is "ASAP without compromising the quality of your essays."

The sooner you turn it in, the sooner they can review your file...

but dont they wait for the LOR's to arrive first?

yes, I got two actually, on the same day. I was really excited and thought one of them was a presecondary interview invite or something, my excitement was short

Well, yes. I meant that if the rest of your stuff is already turned in, then get that secondary done ASAP. If your LORs won't arrive until... September, for example, then there's no point in doing the secondary ASAP except to get it off your chest.

Okay so I don't know the photo etiquette for secondary applications. Today I took a picture of myself in a passport type style, and uploaded it. I was wearing a T-shirt.

Do you think that's acceptable, or should I take a photo in a shirt and tie?

It was discussed on another thread, and others said that as long as you look professional, it might be okay to be in a t-shirt. I personally took a picture in a shirt/tie, but I just did it in my own house. If you have a shirt and tie around, it couldn't hurt to just take another picture w/ the tie.

There's a section in the MD portion to list up to 4 letters from teachers/research mentors. Then there's a section in the MSTP portion in which we're required to list all of mentors that we mentioned in our AMCAS research experience essay.

In the first list (the regular MD part), should we include research mentors who will be included in the second list (the MSTP part) or would that be redundant? Are all of the research mentors' letters given to the MSTP committee also reviewed by the med school committee?

They got back to me - they didn't say when invites started going out, but interviews begin in October.

For the first one I put the letter packet author from my life sciences dean. For the second one I put my PI. If you don't have a premed committee though I would assume you should put it twice.

I'd call the MSTP office on this one. They'll be more helpful I think than the MD office. I don't recall being confused at that point in their secondary, so maybe the app has changed in the past year.

In any case, at washU the MSTP is the entry point, not the MD adcom. MSTP decides who to invite, they do all of your interviews except 1 md-only interview, and they essentially make the decision on accept or not. Because of an MSTP over-acceptance situation 3 years ago (31 mstp's matriculated!), the MD adcom does reserve a 'final say'. So the MSTP admissions committee sends a post-interview response to the MD committee saying "no" (which is final on mstp-only) or "yes". If they say "yes", MD committee reviews your app and almost always acquiesces. I'm told 0-2 people a year get the "yes" by MSTP committee but are subsequently overruled by the MD adcom. Anyway, this is a long-winded way of saying that at washU you should focus on pleasing the MSTP 🙂

WashU just got my LORs today (had to get them sent snail mail by my premed committee)...still waiting on the Dean's Certification letter. Not much of a surprise, though; I've been in Prague on a study abroad, so I had to mail it from the Czech Republic. 🙂

List who wrote your letters in the first part, and list your mentors in the second. If your mentors happened to write your letters, its alright to be redundant. I believe both the MD and the MSTP committees read every letter submitted.

My school doesn't do credit hours; so each class sans lab is 1.0 credit. Is that the number I should put? Or should I convert it to credit hours?

also, should i send in washu secondary if my primary amcas application hasn't been verified yet?

last question, who specifically did you get to sign the certification form? At my school, there is a dean for everything (college, dept., etc)

I listed my SAT score, but I wasn't positive of my ACT subscores and couldn't find my score report, so I left that blank. It mentions on the application to skip the section if the scores aren't readily available, so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I sent my certification form to the dean of the college of arts and sciences at my school, since that's where I took all my classes.

i noticed that the instructions page says "All evaluations should be mailed to:" does that mean they only accept LORs through regular mail? i tried emailing and calling them, but neither have been successful.

They accept virtual evals. I am 100% sure of it, so don't worry.

I don't think they have started processing the Virtual Evals yet since mine were submitted on 6/30 and haven't been marked as there yet. No one from my school has had theirs marked as correct by Wash U either, so I think it's just Wash U slacking on the VE uploading.
