my interviewer told me that there was actually a significant amount of california-ers that came to wayne last year.. anyways im a marylander and im like 75% coming to wayne since i havent gotten any love from other schools
 
Hey, everyone!
Hope all your interviews are going smoothly. I have an interview on Jan 26, and I have a question for those who have already gone to their interviews. Right now, I'm debating whether I should take a cab from the airport to the hotel or just rent a car for my stay in Detroit. Which mode of transportation do you think is more cost-effective and time-saving? Thanks,
 
Rent a car, I believe the cab ride one way from the airport was $50 with a tip according to another interviewee when I was there. I was able to rent a car for like $23/day through enterprise via priceline. This was also nice because it allowed me to see the city and surrounding area for dirt cheap.

I might be one, haha. It seems like there is a sizeable amount, but I couldn't give you a number.

Detroit Taxis are few and far between in addition to being very expensive.

Rent a car with your plane ticket online. Don't forget Ebates for $5 cash back and a pretty sizeable cash back on your ticket and rental.
 
I'm MS1 at Wayne from California. There are a few more of us in my class, maybe 5? I've met several from the other classes too.

Other than the ridiculous out-of-state tuition and freezing cold weather, I'm having a great time here. Lemme know if you have any questions.

after the interview, how long does it generally take for them to get back to you? just curious! i got an interview invite for feb 5th and am wondering how long I have to wait until I find out. thanks!!

Haven't you gotten a packet of information with your interview info? It should give you the call in dates after they meet every month. Current applicants might be able to help you out.

They'll give you a sheet with the call in dates...I would give you the exact date but I lost mine.
 
soooo..... anyone else nervous about the upcoming call in date of the 28th?

I just called them today to ask about sending an update of transcripts etc. and evidently I had already gone to committee! It was all I could do to not ask what the outcome was. I sent an email with the update anyways, I really liked this school-especially the amazing clinical opportunities available and am super hopeful to hear a positive response next Wednesday.

So good luck to all who are also anxiously awaiting their fate.

Yeah...the wait is gut-wrenching. Especially since the last call in date was so long ago.
 
the fact that i interviewed in mid december and won't hear for another week is ridiculous.
 
does anybody know if oos applicants get in state residency after 1 year? i know the SUNY's do this.. because the OOS price for wayne state is just ridiculous.. thanks
 
nope, they say to not to expect residency status during your time there. i think michigan requires 3 years? or was it 5... either way, sucks for us OOS.

I just got my invite for Feb. 13th (I just realized that was on a Friday...) but am all the way down in Texas. Got some questions which I hope haven't been answered already.

-Does the entire interview 'day' really only last for an hour or two? The interviewee website mentions the interviews themselves will last for an hour...and other than that, there is a tour from 12-1pm. It would be sort of unnerving to fly for six hours total and then just spend two hours at the shcool. 😳

-Since Wayne State is a state school, it's comprised mainly of MI residents. Is there anyone (or OOS-ers) that can comment how much of an adjustment it was living there? I'm mainly worried about the weather - I think 50 degrees F is cold. Deathly so if there's wind chill. :meanie:

-Does Wayne State offer any combined MD/Masters programs (like a MD/MPH)? From what I saw on their website, it doesn't look like it.

-If there are any other qualifiers, hints, tips, or information (that can't be easily found on their website), please feel free to enlighten me!

If you're lucky you'll get Dr. Mary-Jean Schenk as your interviewer. She is absolutely amazing, she reads EVERYTHING on your application. Anyway, I asked her about the MD/MPh program and she told me that they have one in the works but it is quite demanding. You should get in contact with her if you get accepted and are serious about the dual degree.

I'm from the south, but am working in Pittsburgh. We jump for joy whenever the weather gets in the double digits here. Expect very cold temps (sometimes below 0) and lots of snow. Detroit is further north and right next to the great lakes so I expect it to be worse. Just make sure you have appropriate winter gear and you should be fine.

I'm actually excited to go to Wayne. The faculty I've met so far seem to love their job and the city offers great opportunities for clinical exposure and for those of us interested in public health (hugh NIH grants for research on lifestyle and diabetes/cancer). All student interests seem to be covered as well. The little orientation guide book that you get at the interview is awesome.

The only worry I have is affordibility. I hope I can get enough money to go!

haha get ready for the weather. it was -6 two nights ago. I went to the gym and walked back home and i swear my sweat froze and I couldn't feel my body. It was quite an experience, but no worries, you will adjust! and I'm sure you will end up loving it 🙂
 
Thanks mabumbum and drmonti for the info... sounds like the cold is definitely something to guard against. Anyone else have things to share? Is the interview day really just two hours long - if so, did you get a good feel of the school and area in that short of a time? Also, for OOSers, what things attracted you to the school over other (in-state) schools? Here's looking at ya, huge OOS tuition. 🙁

well my interview was scheduled for 1030 or something, and so i got to campus at around 10, waited around and talked to the other interviewees that were tehre until 1030, interviewed for an hour, then there was a student-given tour at like 12 or 1230, which lasted about an hour. at the end of the tour they give you a meal pass and you eat with the tour guides and ask any last questions you have, and then youre on your own. i guess you could stick around if you want but theres nothign scheduled for u to do. so yeah the day really only lasts about 3 hours max
 
ya, I had roughly the same schedule. There is no formal presentation of any kind, I do kinda wish there woulda been (although my interviewer was awesome and new everything one could hope to know about the history of WSU which was just as good as a presentation and a lot more personally tailored), then I took a fairly long and insightful tour of the school/hospital complex which ended with lunch.

However, after lunch I stopped down to financial aid to talk to them about COA and aid/grants. They were incredibly helpful, nice, and happy people which was a pleasant surprise. They also directed me on who to contact regarding state residency.
 
For all of you that have recently interviewed or are about to.... Don't take the tour we give too seriously. It is one of the lamest (in my opinion) tours EVER. They basically take you around on a tour of all the basements of the hospitals and around Scott hall.

Keep in mind that the construction that is going on will be complete in the spring, and that is where the school of medicine is moving! The only things you will use in scott hall is the lecture halls and the cadaver lab. Thats it. So make sure to ask about the new building!
 
Has anyone ever tried calling earlier than the call-in date to check their status?
 
Anyone have any advice about a March interview? I just got an invite for the beginning of March, but am REALLY worried that it's too late. I applied pretty early so I am little surprised I got this so late, but I guess it's better than none at all. I would love to go here though...

I'm pretty sure WSU selects a certain percentage from every interview cycle, so I really don't think it matters when you have your interview. They always save a certain number of spots per month.

I would definitely attend the interview! I don't think its too late at all. Considering your from Ann Arbor, you could actually call or e-mail them and try to reschedule the interview a bit early (if there are any spots open due to cancellations and what not). The admission staff is very helpful and accommodating, so it's worth a shot. The interview itself is very relaxed and conversational (I had Dr. Crossland and he was absolutely amazing, he knew my file inside and out!).

I agree with the above poster it seems like WSU has a semi-rolling admission process.
 
Anyone else nervous for tomorrow's phone call? It'll be my third one, and hopefully they say something different this time. :xf:

That's all the reason you need to go. Just be yourself and make sure you have good ideas of how to answer the standard questions.. such as "Why medicine?", etc.

I am from Canada, with 32, 3.66, I have been completed for Wayne on September 20th for secondaries, and I sent 3 letter of interest by email, nothing happened, do you think I have been rejected, I am on pre interview hold for Penn, GWU, VCU, Rosalind..., No interview yet, I thought I have a good shot at Wayne, do you think I call them or wait or send another letter???????????😕

I have an interview in March, so I was just wondering since the date is so late in the cycle, do I still have a chance to get accepted? or I'm interviewing for a waitlist spot? :scared:
I know that they offer about 300 seats, does anyone know how full the class is so far? Thanks!

Of course you have a chance, they accept people from each round of interviews. I interviewed in March last year and was accepted.

i wouldnt worry about it. I am an undergrad at wayne right now, and i have plenty of friends from canada who are applying this cycle. I know a few who have similar numbers as yours and havnt heard anything yet either. I know that because you are condsidered international its a bit harder for you to get in, and they wait a little bit longer until they interview you.

if you havnt gotten a rejection, then you're still in the game.

Do we have to call to verify that we will be attending our interview or do we just show up? I didn't see any information about that on the interview invite letter.

Canadians are considered as OOS and NOT International when applying to Wayne.

About a week before my interview, I received an e-mail that asked me to send a reply if I was planning on coming.
 
Does anyone have the call in number? I lost that paper they gave us 😕
