They probably just haven't reviewed you yet.

no idea, a current med student might be able to answer this

I'm pretty sure I remember they said there were like 35+ people on the committee. They show your stats up on a screen at the meeting while your interviewer presents you as a candidate. Then each person gives you a score that is averaged and ranked amongst other candidates.

Pretty sure this is what I remember. Hope that helps.

That's always kinda weirded me out.... There are certain grades on my transcript that I'd prefer NOT to be projected onto a screen 😀

there are 35+ people on the committee, but only 20 at a given time deliberating over candidates.

No news....sigh......the only thing I got was the dreaded/hopeful,

The adcom would like to consider your app further. But, there just isn't sufficient number of interview spots and you may or may not be interviewed........

status update.

I wonder if I should call and see what my priority score is!
Do they tell you that over the phone?

They will never tell you your priority score. Ever.

Does anyone know how many have been accepted so far? IS vs. OOS?

I don't know how many have been accepted so far, but my interviewer broke it down like this: they receive about 6,000 apps (5,000 OOS + 1,000 IS), 400-500 get accepted for about 180 slots. This year they were just under 6,000 apps. So the majority of the incoming is from OOS.

Has anyone come off the pre-interview hold recently? Does anyone know if they still have interview spots available?

Did anyone get this message ...

The Admissions Committee has met to discuss your file. Your application is being placed on hold for action at a later date. We anticipate making offers October 15, December 15, February 1, and March 15.

You will receive no further communication from us concerning your hold status. The next status change will be to offer you a position in the class, to notify you that you have been placed on the alternate list in mid-March, or to notify you that the Committee will no longer be considering your file.

We thank you for your interest in our school.

aHHH i'M SCARREEEDDDD

Congrats, you weren't rejected following the interview.

This just means they voted on you and you now have a priority score that is used to accept, waitlist, or reject you. They won't waitlist or reject people until around March 15. So in February they hand out more acceptances, but not everyone will get news. Congrats, they did not immediately reject you. They liked you enough to keep you around for the next step. Good luck. 🙂

It's kind of weird to know that 20 or so people talked about, debated and voted for you and you don't even know exactly when. I think they do this on Mondays. I kind of wonder what I was doing at that exact moment.

Thanks. Yea lol, I was thinking the same thing. I wonder what they said about me, and when on monday did they have this meeting. Its kind of weird to imagine your application posted on the screen and then they all discuss things about you, and give you a score...eeek...hope it worked in my favor. ahh yet another month or more to drive myself crazy thinking about all this. Oh well its all good....so far.

whateva07, when did you interview? and did you get the updated message today?

good luck to all of you still waiting!! and remember that LOTS who end up attending were those accepted off the waitlist in the summer

Has anyone come off the pre-interview hold recently? Does anyone know if they still have interview spots available?

Any pre interview hold updates ?

I interviewed on what feels like a lifetime ago lol...though in reality it was just in a September. No word yet, so I'm really hoping for Feb 1st yikes!!! 😱

i really don't know what else to do...other than wait of course :scared:

Maybe a current VCU student could answer this, but how late does VCU hold interviews? A lot of us have been on hold since September, and just wondering if the window is closing fast or if the interviews go pretty late in the year. Thanks.

i know what you mean bruin. I interviewed on 10/1 and I have yet to hear a word. interesting though cause i thought my interview went well. May Feb. 1st bring us good news!! 😀 (i'm instate btw)

I got an interview invite 12/11 after a pre-interview hold (1st week of Dec). When I scheduled my interview there were interview slots available through mid February. I hope this helps.

just got an interview invite tonight. i got the "we want to interview you, but may not be able to" back in november.

Thanks, folks; I appreciate the info. Good luck on all your upcoming interviews.

March 6th is the final date of tours so it is also the final date of interviews.

Thanks for the updates Krn and Cshanty.....did you folks send an update letter?

Does anyone know how VCU is about offering interviews if you happen to be in the area? I am traveling near VCU for another interview and I wondering what VCU's take on calling and stating I would be in the area around a certain time frame. I currently have the hold status message saying "They MAY not be able to interview all candidates at my priority score" I am really interested in VCU and would like to interview there if possible.

What does anyone think should I call them? e-mail them? Or should I not even bother?

i really don't know. But give it a shot, it can't hurt to ask.

wow I cant believe they're ppl from sept who havent heard....I'm going crazy from interviewing in december. Shoot I might not find out til march or later, ahhh.

and hating it. I am trying to convince myself I will not hear anything until the end of March. Unfortunately, it is still all I can think about.

Should we start some sort of countdown....or would it make the waiting even worse.

i am waiting since october as well !! In-state 😡

so lets say we dont hear on feb 1....then what happens next? we wait for last batch for march 1st, is it??? and then if not that, we will see if we are put on waitlist march 15? Anyone want to confirm this. Thanks

I'm pretty sure the last batch of acceptances comes on 3/15, not 3/1, along with the waitlist. So yeah...if you don't hear on 2/1 you'll have to keep waiting.

so if youre put on the waitlist at vcu, what r your chances of getting pulled off it?

I think your chances would be pretty good. Especially as instate!

so once the waitlist is made, they have a preference for instaters? and does anyone know if vcu tells individuals where on the waitlist someone is?

Thanks for the updates Krn and Cshanty.....did you folks send an update letter?

nope, i didnt send anything. i was at work, checking my email, and lo-and-behold, the invite email.

i think update letters only really help after you've interviewed and you've been waitlisted or haven't heard back in a while... am i wrong?

in any case, good luck all!

The last offer date is march 15th, the same day that they create the waitlist. Last year they were a bit backed up and it ended up being on the 17th (and people on SDN went nuts)

so if youre put on the waitlist at vcu, what r your chances of getting pulled off it?

For Out of stater the chances are really good. There is a significant amt of movement for waitlisters since people will get into their state school and drop VCU. There are much fewer instate schools and VCU is pretty well regarded in Va.

Unlike most schools, VCU never has more acceptances out than seats. Most schools send out more offers than they have seats and expect some turnover. That means after march 15th there will be 184 acceptances out there for VCU. This is good news for those waitlisted. It means that if someone drops an acceptance, immediately someone form the waitlist will be pulled off. Waitlist movement begins on May 15th (1st day people with multiple acceptances can only be holding one acceptance)

VCU creates separate waitlists for instate and out of state. This means that if an OOSer drops he/she will be replaced by another OOSer. There has been contemplation whether race and gender play a role (to keep demographics constant an OOS woman will be replaced by another OOS woman etc ) but I have no idea if this is the case so dont ask. All I know is that OOS replaces OOS and IS replaces IS.

The instate waitlist moves very painfully slow, sorry to say guys. There is much, much less movement on the instate waitlist. That said, because VCU only hands out as many seats as it has available, there will be a decent amt of IS waitlist movement compared to some schools but no where near as much as OOS.

Some people set up appointments w/ the dean to discuss their place on the waitlist and chances for getting off of it. She is very reluctant to tell you anything meaningful unless you are at the very top or very bottom. She is more receptive AFTER mid May (end of may is good time) once the waitlist has started to move. There is variability to how much the waitlist moves each year so she has to err on the safe side. To give you an idea, the old dean was hesitant to tell me if I would even get off of the waitlist and I was accepted the very first day the waitlist began moving and was apparently top 5 on the IS waitlist.

Hope that helps clear some things up.

I looked at last year's thread (again) and they didn't tell people they were waitlisted until 3/24 (which was a Saturday)...so for a week these people knew they weren't accepted but did not know waitlist vs. rejection. It seems Dr. WC wouldn't give out any info as to someone's chances until after May 15.

Two people from my family said they read that VCU is increasing (or has increased) the class size to 186. Anyone know if that is true? And if so, are those seats IS or OOS?

I have a question about this-

when I was interviewing, Dr. WC said that they will be granting 400 acceptances out of the 800 interviews this year. So when she says 400, does she really mean that eventually it will be 400 to fill the class? Eg, a good chunk of those will come from the waitlist?

Also, update on the numbers: 800 interview this year, and the class size is increasing to 192 this year. The extra 8 spots will be split 4 IS, 4 OOS.

All allopathic schools are undergoing an expansion to meet the rising demand of the baby-boomers. I think the M1 class already has 186, my class was 184 (we lost some people to the M1s and gained some from the M3 class so not sure on the exact number now). AAMC is planning a 20-30% increase in enrollment so it is likely that that number will increase in the near future.

Well, during the year some people will drop acceptances and those will be filled so that on March 15th there are 186 (or 192 possibly) undeclined acceptances out there. Some people will have already dropped their acceptances for different schools and those will be filled by march 15th. So by march 15th there could have been 192 acceptances offered if no one drops or could be 250 or 300 depending on how many people drop.

By May 15th people will begin to drop and so some will be taken off the waitilst. Not everyone on the waitlist will accept the invitation and so more turnover occurs. Last year I believe just under 400 acceptances were handed out in this way. It *may* stay the same, but it may be the case that fewer seats are handed out to fill the class. I think the 400 was a guestimate going from last years numbers. The year before, many fewer seats were offered than 400.

But the short answer is yes, those extra spaces that make up the 400 will come from the waitlist.

Thanks for the answer, Instatewaiter.

Question for peeps who interview in Dec: have all y'all had your status changed to the post-decision hold? I wonder if they're still reviewing people from Dec interviews and haven't gotten to the January ones yet (I'm wondering when I could expect them to make a decision on me...whether it'll be tomorrow or three weeks from now; I'm very antsy!).

edit: and when I say "decision" I meant getting that hold. Clearly I won't actually hear anything definite for a while...

Has anyone heard any word from VCU lately? I'd really like an interview invite, and have been complete since late August, but have only received the note talking about applicants w/ my priority score being moved to the smaller stack of apps. When will I hear more?

So lets you get the interview hold message and they have given you the score, and the next date for handing out acceptances you dont get in....would you assume that you are on the waitlist and wont be given acceptance in the next round??

yes, i have the same Q ?

OK, so here's a quick question.
Is it true that VCU finishes interviewing by early/mid March? So, I'm assuming that if you don't hear from them by end of February about an interview invite, you are pretty much done at VCU. Those who has gotten acceptances even in June/July are the ones who had interviewed by March and placed on the waitlist, right?

I got the following notice from VCU on Dec 17th.

The committee's file review indicates that they would like to consider your file further. We are now in the process of scheduling interviews and will continue to do so through February. Unfortunately, the committee indicates interest in far more candidates than we are able to interview. Since we are dependent on the Committee member's schedules for interview spaces, we are unable to predict when or if we will be able to schedule you this year. Please continue to check this site to learn when further action has been taken.

Can anyone (ie Instatewaiter?) answer this question?

Thanks.
