i just received my acceptance off the wait-list today!!! fyi, i was not one of the top 50 people on the wait-list invited for the second look event. note: i did, however, send a letter of intent immediately after finding out i was on the wait-list in march, so maybe that really did help! good luck to everyone else who's still waiting :luck:

Congrats!! Just wondering if you are instate or outstate?

thanks!! i am in-state, female. the notification came via email as an application status update.

Me Too!! I mean instate female. VCU is my top choice and I also sent a LOI at the end of march. However, I called to check and they told me that they had not received it yet. I sent another copy this Monday and I have my fingers crossed. I was not invited to the second look either. Did you really feel it was the LOI that made the difference?

also, i applied really late in the cycle in case anyone had questions about that. i sent in my primary in september and my secondary for vcu at the end of december. my interview was in early february (so in response to an earlier post: here's at least one person who interviewed in february and got in off the wait-list!)

all i can say is, the stars must have somehow aligned in my favor and i am so thankful that i got in!

i think the LOI really did make a big difference. i sent mine in via email to dr. wc since we had already been in contact before. we emailed back and forth several times after i sent in my LOI and she always responded very positively. so i think the extra initiative really did have a big impact.

Thanks. I was going to email Dr. WC to get an idea about where I am in the waitlist and what my chances are. However, according to everyone else May 15 would be a better day. I think I will just go ahead and email her any way.

Also, I just found out that one of my supervisors did not mail out my recommendation letter on time for the deadline for the pre med committee for Fall 2009 program. Hence now I would not be able to get the committee eval although I can set up individual letters of eval through the advising office. I was going to apply for the post bacc program at VCU/MCV for fall 2008 and then reapply for Fall 2009 MD program. Anyone, here has any idea how fussy MCV is about pre med committee letter? Especially since my university has an established process that MCV is well aware of.

Congratulations on your acceptance. I was just wondering if you have been accepted at another school when you got off the waitlist. And also, how did they notify you?

I was in the process of giving up hope because I wasn't invited to second look, but your story gives me hope. I really really want to go there even though i've been accepted elsewhere...

I had not been accepted to any schools yet before VCU. I was notified first via email of a status change online, but I'm pretty sure they will be sending the acceptance letter via snail mail as well.

Don't give up hope! I firmly believe that if you are proactive and show that you genuinely want to go there, things will work out in your favor in the end!

So does that mean that they have already gotten through the top 50 on the waitlist?
And can a LOI really make a difference with VCU since we already have a finalized priority score?

Hey guys, I'm an out of state male and I was wondering how far the waitlist in my category moved last year. I really want to go to VCU and I want to know how realistic my chances are. Any help would be great, thanks.

I am an Instate Female invited to the Second Look progran (top 50 waiting list) and went, but have not been taken off the waiting list. Which makes me wonder how someone below me (instate female) did.............................................

I'm not saying it absolutely does, but...race may play a role. If a caucasian instate female student drops an acceptance, they might pull the next CAUCASIAN instate female on the waitlist. Just a guess.

I don't usually post but I wanted to let you guys know that the waitlist is moving... I was accepted on Thurs. night!!! I am an OOS female and went to the second look program. Good luck everyone!

to those who have been accepted from previous years and have been given waitlist indication from Dr. WC:

i recently had a meeting with her where she said i was "pretty high on the waitlist" and she "thinks that i'll be offered." (i was not invited to second look). i know no one can know for sure how much movement there will be. but how accurate has this assessment been in the past?

Hey all. So I am on the WL, and I sent a LOI to Dr. WC. I never heard back from her - is it acceptable to email her to check to make sure she got it, and to ask what my prospects are?

Thanks!

I think it would be acceptable. If you didn't ask a question in your email, she probably felt the letter didn't necessitate a response. She most likely got the LOI and stuck it in your file.

Thank you for your advice.

If she said that you probably will be offered, you have a very high likelihood of getting an offer. She wouldnt say that if she werent pretty sure they are going to get to you. There is no incentive for her to mislead you.

I was told my score was "strong" from the adcom and that I had a good chance of getting in. I got in on may 15th.

I second this. A quick e-mail should suffice.

Hey guys, I've had multiple correspondances wth Dr. WC, each time I expressed a lot of interest in VCU. Do you think this makes me look desperate and if so, does that hurt me?

oh i definitely wasn't thinking that she was misleading me. in fact, quite the opposite. i was heartened by the fact that she said it when she didn't have to. i asked about the accuracy of that assessment in past occurrences, just to see if there were any oddball cases where there was little-to-none WL movement that would nullify the scenario of coming off the WL.

provided that those people were given the same message i got.

sorry, i didn't finish my thought.

Congrats on your acceptance! I was wondering if you had any other acceptances. I want to go there really badly, and I luckily have an acceptance elsewhere, but I'd be happier at VCU. I was wondering if that would work against me getting off the WL.

I just gave up my waitlist spot. Hopefully it was high enough to help someone else on their way to VCU.

When the choice is between two students, one that has other acceptances and one who doesn't, they will offer the acceptance to the one who doesn't have any other offers.

Even if it did make you look desperate it wont hurt. It is better to err on the side of being too interested than not enough.

I always think that the more contact you have with the Adcom the more likely you will be to get in.

This early in the WL they rarely divulge info. So barring some drastically different movement of WL than in past years, you will be getting in. Whether it is in may or july who knows...

Hey all - This is what Dr. WC said to me when i emailed her about my placement: "Your place on the list is not bad. There is a good chance that we will get to your committee rank, especially on the out of state list. There are no 100% certainties but after May 15, I might have a better idea." So.... instatewaiter, does this mean I have a pretty decent chance of getting off the list? Thanks! You are really a great help to this thread.

i don't know where i stand on the waitlist. I will probably email Dr. WC after May 15th.

--would they waitlist people knowing in advance that they have a tiny chance of getting in?

--how many people off the waitlist are not accepted each year? 50% 20%

how quickly has she been responding to emails?

To me this sounds like you are in good position provided the WL moves like it usually does. So if there is little movement this year, you may be on the fence but if there is the nl amt of movement this year you should be golden. She will have more info once people drop their acceptances on the 15th (just like she said)

Every year it seems like people always talk about how slow that year's WL moves but it seems like the amt the WL moves is relatively standard.

yes. They make sure they have plenty of people on the WL so that in the case there is more movement than nl, they still have plenty to fill the class. I would say that a good portion of the WL wont get in. That said, VCU traditionally has a lot of movement since they never have more than ~190 (or however big your class is supposed to be) acceptances out there at one time.

In state female here who withdrew acceptance this morning. Best of luck to y'all!

Drhexane where did you decide to go??

Has anyone heard if tuition is going up or not? Has anyone gotten award letters? I have know idea when they would go out since I got in last year around June and got my award letter right after that. I was going to call FA Dept, but have not gotten around to it. And by the way for those that are still waiting GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!👍

EVMS. I really think both schools are fabulous but I felt a little more comfortable/like I fit better at EVMS.

Now of course if UVa wants to show me some love I will gladly reciprocate. . . 😍

has anyone emailed dr. wc recently (in the past week) and received a response?

I do know that she is REALLY busy right now. One of my friends tried to make an appointment with her, and was told she is booked through mid July.

That being said, I emailed her a few weeks ago and heard back within a day or so...but that was a few weeks ago, and it was a very short response...she's busy...I wouldn't hound her too much.

just withdrew from VCU, instate female. good luck to everyone who's waiting! :luck:

Yeah, I sent her an email yesterday around mid-day and got a response last night around 7:30pm. She must really be swamped if she's still responding past business hours.

But hey, at least I got the short and cryptic response I'd been waiting for. 😀

"It is difficult to predict but you are not in a bad place."

I spoke with Dr. WC last week and she confirmed there there are two waitlists: one IS and one OOS, and they replace like with like. She also says that it's ranked by priority score, with only your name, GPA, and MCAT on the list. They prioritize by priority score then the most balanced MCAT + GPA (high MCAT + low GPA or low MCAT + high GPA doesn't get priority).

She told me that there are "several hundred" on the waitlist. She actually was willing to tell me whether I was in the top, middle, or bottom parts of the list, as well. Asking how many people typically come off the list was not as enlightening (she said "a lot"). So...there ya go.

Dr. WC also recently emailed me back and told me that the majority of the movement was going to happen within the next 3 to 4 weeks(no big surprise) as well as the "you are in a good position, but you never know" line.

i have a feeling that email is an email she's used many times already. sorta like when you write to the president and everyone gets the same letter back.

😕😕😕 what do you mean by doesn't get priority?

😕😕😕 what do you mean by doesn't get priority?

I think they mean that a good balance between your GPA and MCAT is key. An applicant with balanced numbers is going to be ranked higher than someone with low GPA and a killer MCAT or vice versa. Of course, if your numbers are balanced but low, you probably aren't going to get the best rank either.

So basically, good balanced stats > good uneven stats.
