2009-2010 Grad School Interview Invite Thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Bummer 🙁 Thanks for the info. I really think that all of these schools need to give us some kind of idea of who is accepting students so we don't needlessly spend so much money applying.

high number of apps + very few admits = high selectivity = higher rankings

having said that, many schools do tell you. i contacted all of my POIs to inquire about the program, their work, and whether they are able to take students this. most wrote back telling me one way or the other, and i saved some money and time this way.

Is anyone else surprised that University of Rochester has not released invitations for interviews yet? (at least to my knowledge)

I believe last year they sent invites about this time? Maybe we'll hear something by the end of the week.

glad to hear it! I know how that feels.

Thanks! To be clear about how it feels -- my mate was astounded and our four year old knocked silly by the enthusiasm of my "happy dance." Matter o' fact I feel like doing it again right now...

So, is it bad that I'm already starting to think about where I want to apply next year?

Probably not. I'm still trying to think of Plan B (and C and D and E and so on ) in case I don't get in anywhere! Don't lose hope, though. Last year, people received invites through February 20th, so there's still a good deal of time left!

I did contact my POI at Yale and he told me: "We work on a system in which particular faculty members do not “take” students in a given year. We tend to accept the strongest students in the pool and let the spread across areas work out over several years. It is almost always the case that people we admit have a good deal of research experience and wish to pursue research careers. If you are admitted to the program, you would be welcome to work with me."

Thanks. I still have 3 left that aren't on the list yet, so I still have a little bit of hope.

Futureappsy2, Do you know who historically notifies very late in the game (invites after mid-February)?

Do you think it is ok to ask the grad student you are staying with for interview tips or is that crossing a line?

Futureappsy2, Do you know who historically notifies very late in the game (invites after mid-February)?

Judging from last year's thread, it looks like some late notifications (all clinical) were Cincinnati, SUNY-Stony Brook, Montana, Saint Louis University, and Saint John's University. Hawaii was very late (March) but did phone interviews only.

One more thing about Yale... I emailed the program assistant last week asking about interviews and she responded last Wednesday with:

"Actually we never hold in person interviews. Invites will start by the end of next week. The only date you might need to hold is March 1st, which is the visiting day for invited applicants."

So it's possible that they haven't even notified the people they want to interview/accept yet... not to unnecessarily get people's hopes up, but it's still a possibility, albeit slim.

I think if you phrase it the right way, it should be OK. For instance - tell me more about the interview process, what should I expect, what did you find the most challenging, etc.

They must expect you to have questions... it's only natural to try to be as prepared as possible.

psst, future - slight booboo on the UK date - it's 2/12, not 2/1. Also, you forgot to include it in the list of today's updates.

Futureapppsy2 -- A huge thank you for the outstanding job you've been doing with this thread. Previous years' threads just pale in comparison to what you've managed to do with all the details here. :horns: 🙂

There is no accurate way to rank Clinical Psychology programs. Some have tried through research pubs, others through opinion polls (seriously), etc.

true. but selectivity plays a major role in the so called official rankings [ie. us news and world report], whether you agree with them or not, and schools and individual programs very much pride themselves with those numbers. they are also part of the apa disclosure data, for which i do not see any other reason than to point to that program's selectivity.

Can whoever received the invite from University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana PM your POI, or if you are uncomfortable sharing I can let you know who mine is for confirmation? Thanks.

I would really appreciate if the person who got the UWO invite could let us know whether this invite came from a POI or DCT. Thanks!

1. Is it OK to reschedule an interview for the alternate date after I committed to the first date? It's only been about 48 hours, so it hasn't been long. If I can't reschedule, then I will have to turn down another interview.

2. I am about to potentially skip out on my own birthday thrown by all of my friends. My way-out-of-state boyfriend is also coming up, so looks like he'll be spending time w/o me here while I'm interviewing. Sweet!

I want it to be April 1 like NOW!!

University of Utah for Counseling...
haven't heard anything yet though. Anybody else?

Two of my friends recently received invitations to interview with Utah Counseling Psych. Not sure of the exact date.

Good luck!

Does anyone know if Boston University Counseling Psych even does interviews?

I received an email from them that essentially said, "Thanks for the app, it's complete and under review. Decisions are typically made 4-6 weeks after the app is complete. Once the decision has been made you will receive a letter in the mail."

I've never heard of a counseling psych doc program NOT interview, but I suppose it's possible - and that's what I think I read in this email.

Thoughts?

Don't know about BU's program. But I do know Colorado State Univeristy and Texas Woman's University does not do interviews. They offer acceptnace admissions, then they have a "visit day" for students that were offered admission, they have a chance to visit and get to know the faculty w/o the pressure of being interviewed since you're already accepted.

I just wanted to post a note here for people who are applying to Loyola University Maryland's PsyD program. The first post says that emails were sent out on 1/20 and 1/22 for interviews, but as for myself, the Director of Program Operations sent me an email saying my app was completed on 1/2🙂 This means that they won't be able to tell me my status until this week or the next. So, if you're stressing about LUM not sending you an invite, drink a cup of chamomile tea and relax for now.

Can anyone who got an interview at Yeshiva let me know if the professor listed to interview you is also your POI? In the e-mail I got they listed the name of a professor that I did not put on my application. I am wondering whether this is standard or if others are interviewing with their POI. Please let me know!

Yeah, I did that too. She told me that she would be taking students.

Boston University doesn't have a counseling psychology program, they only have a clinical program. Do you mean Boston College?

My POI that I mentioned in my personal statement is the same professor that was listed in the interview invite email. I am not sure if this is standard or not...

BU does have a counseling psychology program through the school of education, not through the arts and sciences psychology department.

I thought that too (its my alma mater) but I googled it and they actually do, its just part of the School of Education and its an Ed.D. rather than a Ph.D. Other than that, I have no information, sorry!

lol so not sure how I missed this, but it turns out my POI from Alabama Tuscaloosa is also a child concentration guy. He does forensic child psych! Anyways I too received an invite to interview at UAB-Tuscaloosa.

Who was the other one? PM me 🙂

AND both UIC and UMSL give interviews based on POI and concentration, SO there will be more invites going out.... no worries mates!

WOW, I went to BU too and never knew. They should really advertise this more.

The grad students I have met on interview weekends seem to be happy to help with any and all questions. Most aren't that far removed from this crazy process 😱 and said they knew how important it is to ask as many questions as possible.

Has anyone heard anything from temple since the director sent that last e-mail that people posted? I haven't heard anything about them submitting their "final" load of interviews.

I imagine they are done, as interviews are this weekend.

I emailed the graduate coordinator at Rochester. Just wanted to share that the faculty are making their decisions right now (hence why no one has heard yet) and that their interviews are on February 20th. Hope this helps put some of you at ease! Best of luck!

how do you know who is interviewing you? did they send you a second email? i RSVP'd to the email invite last week but haven't heard anything from them since then.

How literally did you mean right now? 🙂 I had this image of the graduate coordinator secretly emailing saying THEY ARE ABOUT TO DECIDE!!!! Like before an awards show...

Did he give you a time frame for when they would let people know about the decisions that they are making right now? 🙂

I had been wondering the same thing and was waiting to see more invites posted on the thread. Not to be a pessimist, but I'm thinking we didn't make the cut. I know a few others who were waiting for the final decisions as well but no word from the DCT.

Yeah, I also had the same thing happen that you did. I'll PM you the POI I listed, and it just might be that the same professor is just not seeing anyone.
