2009-2010 Grad School Interview Invite Thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think 4-5 years is a bit much unless it includes junior and senior year research in undergrad, in which case it does sound about right. I would say anywhere over 2-3 years research experience is good. 4-5 years is great but I don't know that it is necessary. From the professors i've spoken to, they seem to want at least 2 years, and are very happy with anything over that. this is of course best if the research is relevant to their work.

My UG advisor told me that the second I declaired psychology as my major if I planned on getting into grad school I should get involved in research at that moment. I was a freshman when I declaired so I had 4 years including summers, and multiple presentations, and co authorships...I think the best advice I have would be at least 2 years of SOLID research not just data entry.

I wasn't considering undergrad work in this equation - for me, it was irrelevant to the work of my POIs.

Hi everyone!

I've been following this thread for about a week now and I thought it was high time I joined!

So Far I have interviews at

Widener (psyd)
U Washington (Adult Clinical PhD) (Phone)
Yeshiva (Clinical Health phd)
CUNY Gradcenter (Social Personality)
Palo Alto (Clinical Phd)

Does anyone know when Columbia Teacher's College Counseling PhD Program will start sending out invites? (It doesn't seem like they have already) The suspense is killing me!

Thanks Everyone!

I'm including undergrad. If your only research experience is 2 years in undergrad, that's going to be difficult. Most people have that.

Even if your research experience was in something other than your interests, it's still important. It's the process of participating in research that counts. I said 4-5 years INCLUDING undergrad because that accounts for a few years in undergrad and maybe some time after. If you were hardcore doing research from freshman year on, then you might be OK. Some people get away with less. You're just better off if you have more. Not to mention you'll be more prepared for grad school when you get there. I've taken 3 years off since undergrad and it's amazing what I've learned in that time.

Yes sorry I meant 2-3 years post undergrad, full time research. The advice I've gotten is that undergrad research no matter how extensive should be followed up by at least a year or two of full time research So 4-5 including undergrad is definitely the correct amount.

Thanks for the clarification!

I just got a phone call from the secretary at Hofstra...interview day for Clinical Ph.D is March 5th

I could use some advice here. I am waiting to hear back from Wisconsin-Madison about interviews. My fiance was just waitlisted at the law school there, and if still intersted needs to write a letter explaining why he is interested and the likelihood of attendance. It would be much easier for him if he knew whether I got an interview. I have received interviews at similar caliber schools. Has anyone heard from Madison? Would it be advisable to email my POI or the department secretary to check on the status of invitations, or is that typically considered annoying?

Thanks all!

Just wondering what other people's contact with usc faculty has been like. PM me to discuss.

I've emailed my POI at a few schools because my travel schedule is getting a little hectic and I didn't want to book something that would hurt my chances of making the interview day at your program...they've been really helpful.

I could be wrong, but I thought Wisconsin didn't conduct interviews.

I called Madison a little over a week ago to inquire about the status of interviews. They seemed extremely disorganized (or, at least, the person I spoke with did - who I think was just a departmental secretary) and said that they do not have an officially interview weekend and that interview invites would not be made at a set time. So, I would email your POI. Just be honest, explain the situation, and ask when you can expect to hear something. Most people respect the fact that this is a stressful and confusing process!

In other news, I'm glued to my phone because apparently Feinberg invites are going out today. Anyone hear anything yet?

Does anyone know what's going on with GW clinical PhD? I thought I saw on here awhile ago that invites were already sent out, but I was just looking at the list and didn't see anything. Am I missing something??

Could the lucky person/people who received invites to Case Western please PM me their POI (s)? That would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!🙂

Welcome and congratulations! Mind saying or letting futureapppsy2 know when you received your invitations? (I'm especially interested to find out about Widener)

I called Teacher's College's Counseling Program on Friday and they said that the faculty need to make their decisions about who to interview by the 3rd, this Wednesday. So, she said that we should hear either the end of this week or next week. Hope that's helpful. 🙂

For those also waiting on UIC - heard from someone today!! 🙂xf🙂 and apparently there has been a delay with some POIs and applications because there was a glitch in the online application system. (This has actually happened to a few of my schools :scared:) They retrieved everything (don't worry!!), but versus those paper applications there might be a delay in hearing. So chin up!!

Yay! Let's keep holding on to that hope...

Hofstra! I want an invite!

I figure it's not possible to call all the applicants in one day, so I continue to wait. I think this application process has a dual function.

1- get PhD students into the program
2- get patients for current psychologists

I'm simultaneously excited for and dreading Monday. I am convinced I will hear (or not hear, decisively) from my top two schools: Northwestern Feinberg and UCSD/SDSU JDP. I know for a fact about Northwestern due to a previous poster's inquisition (thanks!) and am pretty sure about UCSD/SDSU since I think they met on Friday and at least one person on this board has already been contacted. Anyone else feeling the same way?

Also, for anyone interested in GA State, my friend applied there and called on Friday... They told her that all invites have gone out! She asked when she would know if she was waitlisted or not and they wouldn't answer her question...

Just wondering if there is any concrete reason to expect more phone calls to go out today for UCSD/SDSU JDP since it looks like multiple phone calls went out Friday (from the master interview list)? Thanks and congrats to those who got the calls Friday (I am horribly horribly jealous 🙂)

Also, if those people wouldn't mind PMing me their POIs I would be very grateful...

still waiting for someone, anyone, to contact me! lol. 10 schools, no formal rejections, no interview invites...... wow. anxiety.

Just got a phone call invite to Northwestern Feinberg!! So excited 🙂

Interview dates are 2/26, 3/5, and 3/12. They are finding out preferences for dates and then letting us know what date we should come within the next few days.

P.S. my name starts with A (first and last) so they're probably going in alphabetical order and you have all afternoon if you haven't heard from them yet!

Same here. Actually, I got one rejection via snail-mail this weekend. This entire process bewilders me. I have a masters in general/experimental psychology and have been working as a clinical research coordinator for two years. I def have the requirements that everyone says are essential...yet silence thus far!

I think it is likely there will be more going out this week... It says on the master list that the invites that went out Friday (I assume you meant Friday instead of Monday) were for the neuro track. I spoke with Sandy Scott on Friday and she said invites were going out this week, so I think the neuro track might have been early. This is all assuming you didn't apply to the neuro track! I'm still holding out hope... although their interview dates are the Monday/Tuesday after UF's Friday/Saturday interview so that will be a crazy weekend for me if I do get invited!

Has anyone heard anything from the PsyD program at University of Denver?? Going crazy waiting to hear something!

Just got a phone call invite to Northwestern Feinberg!! So excited 🙂

Congrats!! A lot of people are waiting on that school. Expect to get lambasted with requests for POI info in 3, 2, 1................

YAY! Congrats for you! That is super exciting. Wow!
I hope that in a few hours, I'll have a similar post. That's funny that you included the bit about your last name.... I was just thinking that mine starts with a W so I'll probably be last! Good luck all Feinberg hopefuls, and congrats again Clinicalpsyapp!!

Good point... I don't mind posting it on here since all invites will be going out today anyway... It's Laurie Keefer.

Looking for advice on how to handle a odd situation - or seeing if it's even worth addressing at all!

So last year due to the economy I was wait listed at several programs. One program in particular was my top choice. I kept in close contact with my POI after interviews and after being told I was "the #1 alternate on 3 professor's wait lists". One professor was actually trying to secure additional funding and was contacting me on a regular basis telling me to "not give up hope" (funny thing was this professor didn't even interview me and wasn't listed as a POI - but he said he was "definitely interested in me"). Needless to say, the additional funding could not be secured and I was told to "keep in touch" and "apply again next year". Since that time, I've had numerous conversations with that same original POI because I have been working on some of his research topics with the government and coming into contact with several mutual acquaintances.

So here I am... confused. Interviews for that school have already went out and I didn't receive one. Now, I also want to reiterate that at no time was it even alluded to the fact that I was "destined a spot in 2010"... but on the same note... many hints were dropped saying that I "shouldn't have any issue getting in this year".

Should my dejected self contact this POI or is it just better to cut my losses and move on?

Honestly, what do you have to lose by contacting the POI? Just ask him/her about your status...Why "move on" at this point in the game, if it is a school you are really interested in? I say it won't hurt... that's just my opinion though. Good luck :luck:

Ditto! I feel like the applicant that time forgot... only 7 schools, one emailed rejection and then... nada. Sigh...

I could not agree more! One of my schools had a Dec 1st deadline and has yes to send out invites or rejects...not cool!!!!!

This might seem silly, but does your last name start with an A, B or C? My last name starts with a U, so I'm hoping they're going alphabetically.... 🙄

I'm sorry I have bad news...my last name starts with W...they might be going my first names...that's a C...I'll keep hoping for you :luck::xf::luck:

GOOD NEWS!!! all you UMSL clinical psychology applicants, i just spoke with the main guy, Dr. vandenberg, and he said they are still trying to resolve issues of sending out invites... so simply put NOT ALL INVITES have been sent out... He said he couldnt be more specific on the problem, but that it will be resolved and not all invites are out.

so UMSL and UIC are still in the air 🙂

Is anyone else going to the South Dakota interview?

I received an interview, but unfortunately I have to opt to do it over the phone rather than traveling to Vermillion. I'm incredibly disappointed, but the cost of flights was absolutely staggering on top of another very expensive interview, and there's just no way I could swing it. I've been dying to see the campus and meet my POI, but alas, there's just absolutely no way I can make it happen. 🙁 Hopefully the phone interview will go decently well, though I know it reduces my chances.

If you feel like reporting back afterwards and telling me what the campus is like, that would be awesome!! Good luck to you.

I'm torn. I had accepted that I didn't get an interview to UMSL and just clump then in as a "soft rejection"... and now you have rekindled my hope. I love you and I hate you. (j/k) 😉

Does any one know when interview "season" (as in the actual interviews, not interview invites) typically ends? Judging from last year's thread, it seemed to end after the first full week in March, with only a couple of schools (e.g, NW-Feinberg) holding interviews the next Friday. Is this "typical"?

I think it's pretty typical. All decisions have to be made on both our ends by April 15th, so mid-March and beyond is pushing it.

Do any PsyD applicants (or anyone who knows about these programs) have an opinion on La Salle University vs. University of Indianapolis. I have been offered an interview at both schools on the same day, and have to choose (and I've already talked to them about other options).

Congrats Clinicalpsych!!!! I'm still waiting to hear but I"m assuming I"m prolly going to get rejected as Laurie Keefer was mine as well. Of course my last name starts with an S and my first name starts with an M.

Lucky Connecticut interviewees:

I saw that there were some more interview dates added to the thread this weekend; did anyone actually get more invitations from the program?

Congrats & good luck!

technically they can offer interviews whenever they want up until a given date, remember if they dont find what they want first time around they have to get it somewhere. I know its far less likely, but is always plausible

Hi all, I'm so glad I found this forum! I was wondering if anyone has heard from any of the Univ. of New Orleans applied psychology programs (i.e. applied biopsych., applied developmental)? The deadline was today so I imagine I may be jumping the gun a bit by assuming any invites would be sent out just yet. Curiousity is just getting the best of me! Thanks!

i would spend my time researching the programs further..which one is the best fit for you, orientation-wise? what is their APA match rate? look at the courses offered, and if they fit your interests.. how expensive are they? where do you see yourself living: indianapolis or philadelphia?

i know a little about la salle since i live in philly, but i dont know anything about indianapolis. altho, after consulting my insiders guide (which isn't the latest version), it looks like they offer some financial assistance, so that could be a plus!!! i dont think lasalle has anything to offer $$-wise. 🙁

Is anyone else waiting to hear from the University of Arizona or University of Cincinnati (clinical Ph.D.)?
