2009-2010 Grad School Interview Invite Thread!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You're lucky! In my experience, our advising office was a joke. The most help I received from them was that I should take a few extra classes to be more competitive (which I did take), but they had no advice to give on the process or anything.

It wasn't an official advising thing. Within the psych department, they would just have meetings for people interested in grad school in psych, and I just personally sought out additional advice from people I worked with in undergrad.

Yes, that's excellent advice! This is my second time applying, and both times I've had a letter-writer go missing or flake out at the last minute. Not fun. If you can possibly get an extra person to write you a letter, do so. Having an extra letter is never a problem, and it'll save you a lot of grief if another letter-writer drops out on you.

It's not exactly a problem, but some schools limit the number of letters you can have. Just something to keep in mind.

Interview for Wayne State today! (along with an odd rejection from UFL).

Has anyone had the following problem? I went through this application process last year. I was first on the waitlist at two of the schools I interviewed at, and I wasnt even interviewed again this year! Everything in my application has gotten stronger, except my GRE scores. Just curious how often this happens.

Hi all,
New here, so it's my first post. I had an interview yesterday for Duquesne's School Psych PhD program. I received an email today saying that they have accepted me! I never thought the turn around would have been that quick!! 😀

Has anyone else heard from Virginia Tech? There's a post that an invite went out way early, but I wasnt sure if this was an individual case, or if several other applicants received that invite. Thanks! 😳

Some schools just have a policy that they rarely interview someone more than once, so if you interviewed a previous year, you don't get an interview if you apply again.

My application has gotten universally stronger than 3 years ago, and I didn't get an interview at the 1 school I applied to that I interviewed at before (and was told that I was one of the person's top choices at the time). And I've gotten way more interviews overall this year than 3 years ago.

Just received email invite for 2/24

one day interview - decisions being made 3/3 (oh the pressure to shine!)

Good luck to anyone else that applied!

Was it a mass e-mail? That's one of the schools I applied to...and so far silence 🙁.

I was wondering the same thing. I have a connection at Virginia Tech so I asked them to find out what the deal was. She said that the first-tier clinical invite date is 2/5, so it has already passed. But she said it was possible they will have a second-tier interview date, but she wasn't sure yet. So not the best news, but dont give up hope yet.

I got an invite today for USF clinical! Email form the DCT- interviews the 12th or 19th.

Congrats! I'm super jealous! Do we think all the invites have gone out, or do we think I still have some hope? Those with invites if you could PM me your POI it would be greatly appreciated! 🙁

Strangely enough, This exact thing has happened to me. In fact, from the way faculty were talking last year, i figured i was a shoe in for a spot this year. But I didn't even get an interview. hmmm...

I definitely feel ya on this.

For anyone who received invitations to USF:

Do you know if all invites have gone out?

Was it for the neuro-track?

Congrats to you all!

Same here.

Got an invite today from "Coordinator of Admissions" for University of South Florida inviting for an "open house" (i.e., interview) on Feb. 12th or the 19th. (They call it an open house though and say it's not required for admissions...heh).

E-mail seems to have been sent just to me with my POI cc'd (at 3:20pm EST). And if it goes by last name, *shrugs*, mine's near the end of the alphabet.

Would the lucky ducks of Wayne State interview invites say or pm me how they got their invite (mass vs. POI) and what kind of concentration if any PLEASE!!!??

Just got an email invite from Washington State University for an interview (in Counseling)!

Just a quick question though; the "interview" trip is like 4 days long, from March 3-6. Is that how it was for you guys?? I didn't realize it was that long of a trip.

It was an email invite and a phone call from my POI. Hope that helps..

I was told that only several POIs had interviews today, but not all of them. We shouldn't rule them out if we haven't been rejected yet.

Could the University of Houston and Western Michigan University people please PM me their POIs? I will tell you mine first, if you would like. Gracias.

Wait, POIs emailed the invites for UND? That is different from last year!

What was "odd" about it?

Just to clarify..did Nova send out their invites?

I applied to ten schools. With USF's invites going out, my list has just about reached its end. I'm still waiting for word from the last two. I scored two invites and one rejection for sure. I suppose the other seven are still up in the air, but who knows these things? I thought at this point I would be happy, but I actually feel lukewarm and disgruntled. I think my interviews will be like that scene on officespace where the people skills guy has to interview for his own job. I'll just be shouting, "I have research skills! I am good at dealing with research! Can't you understand that? What the heck is wrong with you people?!"

That's funny. 🙂

But, you have two interviews, right? That's two more than a lot of people on this forum. This process can be tiring for sure. But, don't let it get you down.

After receiving an interview, why do so many people assume they will not succeed in it? I don't know how many applicants were in the mix at your schools, but you are among the chosen few interviewees. That's awesome!!!

The University of Houston person (i.e. me) has already responded several pages earlier in this thread, and I don't really feel like sending PMs to each of the 8 or so people that have asked. The phone call I received was from Dr. Vincent, who is both the DCT and my POI, so I don't know if calls were being made by POIs or by the DCT, since in my case they are one and the same.

I understand completely. It isn't about thinking you're going to fail at the interviews (or that it's a guaranteed success). It's more about the feeling of rejection being strong and clear, and acceptance still being only a possibility. I very much want to march over to the offices of those who rejected me and ask "Why?"

The truth is, they probably don't even really know why. I very much don't think that the decision-making process is anywhere near as systematic as we think it is. Yes, they consider our qualifications, but with a stack of 15 very similar (yet completely different) applications, how do they distinguish? They don't, really. They follow their instincts. The surveys done of admitting faculty all list what they think are the criteria they follow, but unless someone does a study of the stats of those who applied compared to those who got in, we won't know.

Sorry. Got distracted there for a moment.

Hey everyone,

This is my first time around applying to programs. I applied to 5 Clinical Psychology Psy.D programs- GW, Yeshiva, University of Denver, CW Post (LIU), and PGSS-Stanford Consortium. I was invited to interview at GW and Yeshiva (awesome!) but am still waiting to hear from the others. I saw the list of dates interviews were extended and when they are and some of the schools I haven't heard from are on that list 😱. How do the schools deal with applications that come in right around their deadline but don't get processed until way after? For example, I had my U of D stuff in on time but by the time they got recommendations, transcripts etc processed it was about 2 weeks after their deadline. Do they still extend interviews to these people even if they have offered a bunch of interviews already?

-Concerned

I feel the same way. I have two interviews (one down, one to go) and have official and unofficial rejections from the other 6. I know I should be happy with my interviews (and I am) even though it is odd to celebrate when you are rejected by 3/4 of the schools you applied to! It is also frustrating because I think I know why I prob. didn't get past the first round at some schools (undergrad gpa/transcript) and there is not much I can do to change it. The schools I interviewed at were interested in the classes I took after graduation, the others were not (I am going by the application forms so this is an educated guess).

I loved the school I interviewed with and would gladly go there but I thought they would invite about 3 applicants for every spot and it ended up being about double that. and this should surprise nobody but the quality of the applicants at my interview was very high. I had a wakeup call that even at the interview stage, the odds are still against you (of course there is much more you can do about it but a rejection after interview would be easier to take personally too). Anyway, I don't want to complain about having interviews but I just wanted to warn others that there may be some mixed feelings.

I think I also feel sad anytime something is almost over, even if it was a stressful time there are things I will miss about applying (the hopefulness for one thing) but it is time to move on!

Good luck to us all!

I know exactly what you mean, I had only one interview this year and there were 5-6 applicants per position, all of whom were well qualified. The worst part is, after the interview I have absolutely no idea how I did and they will be letting people know as early as this week whether we are accepted.

I am glad that you actually enjoyed this process of applying, even though it has some stress involved. I get what you're saying. I, however, cannot wait until it is all over and I'm either in a PhD program or I'm not.

Enjoy may be too strong a word, perhaps I have Stockholm Syndrome 😉

I agree... I think it's more they pick people to accept rather than pick those they reject. They pick out the ones they feel fit best, and then the rest are those that don't get a spot. I don't feel that, in most cases, they go through and say "no."

I was in more or less the same situation last year with DU(University of Denver.) Do not worry about it at all; they have multiple rounds of interviews, and they call people for interviews on different dates. If some have received invites, it does not mean they are done inviting or interviewing yet.
As for me, even though my application was processed very late (missing transcripts), I got an interview, and I was accepted into the program. I did not go because of financial reasons. I just realized I would not be able to sleep at night if I were to accrue that much debt (over $150k).

hope this helps.

it was a mass email..perhaps another one is going out monday am?? I know very little about the process there..
good luck!

Yes, it's instincts! Basically, if you go to the interview, they want you - they just want to make sure they can stand working with you for 5 years.

I got one interview, and I thought I nailed it. I realized that some of the other people who were interviewing with me had more experience, but I didn't let that psych me out. Everyone the whole weekend was saying great things to me, going as far as a random grad student who I wasn't staying with/didn't interview with say that she "has heard great things about me". The professor than emailed me after the interview and said "you would be a great fit for our lab"

All in all, I got rejected! Ha ha. My point is there really is no way to know. That seems like it was my only interview, so I guess I'll be active on this forum this time next year! Best of luck to everyone else!

What's up with University of Cincinnati? It is the ONLY school that stays completely off this forum (I even checked last year's thread and it wasn't there either!!!!!!!!!) Invites? I have actually been told that someone has receieved a rejection from them....but that's hearsay

Does this school even really exist?! lol

I just don't get it. I have heard this a lot here in the forum. It seems like head games are being played. I know they're not. The contenders within the field are all just really (equally) strong.

Good luck! I hope another interview turns up for you.

Oh sheesh. 6 people for one spot? :scared: This is getting me really worried. And I have to agree, a rejection after an interview can seem really personal.

I do hate the whole 'oh we like you/ you'll be such a great fit for our lab' and then be 'punched' with a rejection. I don't get this. After an interview, where you know who you'll accept (or have an idea) why would you say to another applicant that you like them, when you clearly don't like them enough? 🙁

Last year, during an interview weekend, I also got "raving reviews" from the people interviewing me. I even got a "special" extra interview (that no other candidate got) during which one of the faculty member actually remarked "we must really want you here if the DCT has set up this extra interview" Nevertheless, I was rejected.

At a second school, I felt the I had connected with the POI and the interview went great. We even stayed in contact after the interview. I also met her again and had a semi second interview. Nevertheless, I was rejected.

..And my family and friend wonder why I am not excite when I recieved invites this year. I felt toyed with last year. But its the nature of the beast. It just so competitive. I hope I have better luck this time around. :xf:

I have heard of this happening but I don't think it's head games. They probably did hear great things about you and you would be a good fit for the lab. and they probably say these things to make us feel good because they know we are in a stressful situation. But then there is someone else who they have also heard great things about and she would be a good fit too, oh and the professor she worked with is a close personal friend. and they can only choose 1. ........ and you get rejected. still sucks.

Because nobody would be mean enough to flat out say we really didn't like you.

Have you heard anything from USC? I went to their 2/1 interview with about 20 other students... I'm still confused as to why you were invited to interview early??

I haven't heard anything yet and I'm getting anxious because I heard back from another program 3 days after my interview saying I was accepted.

Well yeah, I get that, but I don't think they should do something like this:

When you're not a fit, that's ok, most of the applicants understand, but giving false hope to me is more than mean. It just makes you bitter with this whole thing. How about not saying anything until they make a final decision?
I know, I know ... I am just stressed out that's all. Getting an interview is great, and you say 'oh I got ahead of so many people to get here' but the odds at the interview aren't all that great; because all the people at the interview are amazing too. I apologize, I still have a couple interviews left (including my top choice) and I think the stress is getting to me, along with your 'horror' stories. :bang::help:

Well, there are plenty of people on this forum (including myself) who haven't received any invites at all, so it sounds to me like you're doing something right... I hope you get in this time around! :luck:

For those of you who are re-applying this year, are you finding that you are getting more interviews? And did you apply to all of the same schools you applied to the first time, or did you apply to more/different schools?
