My status is rejected... although I just received an e-mail saying I was complete for their MSTP program (which I did not apply for...) 3.87cGPA, 3.92sGPA, 35S

Never received an e-mail for the MD portion, but I received the complete e-mail for MSTP on 08/19/09. When I submitted my application the MD/PhD box was checked. I called them and had them change it (this was back in early July). My online application showed the change around mid-july and I just checked the status randomly today and saw it was rejected.

Dang, don't worry though, I'm sure you will do fine at many other schools. Those are great numbers.

Thanks for the kind words... already rejected at three schools, having a bad week (no interviews).

Might you consider calling to double check that your application is in for MD, not the MSTP? If you didn't get a complete e-mail for the right program, they may have been rejecting you for a program you didn't intend to apply for.

NYUSOM has a complicated help program. I have called them, but when you call you speak with a general help desk. The help desk then tries to annotate your problem and opens a ticket to be sent to another group of individuals. I just called tonight, and attempted to reopen the ticket, so I will see how it goes. This is interesting as according to my timeline, I was complete on 08/19/09 (for the wrong program, I was never complete for just MD) and rejected sometime after that (20th or 21st). Has anyone else been rejected (I did not receive an e-mail, I checked the status online)? I would reject me for the MSTP program too, seeing as I did not answer any of the essays or provide additional details for their prereqs...

Is it safe to list "Academic Medicine" for the question "Where do you see your career" if I have no TA/teaching experience?

I want to list A.M. because I want to see patients and do some research. I would also like teaching, but I know nothing about teaching/tutoring others.

sure why not. if it's something your interested in go for it. try and think why you want to, it will help write the essay and you will be able to explain yourself in an interview if necessary

hey guys,

i was wondering would ER be considered private practice?

hey guys,

i was wondering would ER be considered private practice?

um... I see that this is your first ever post in SDN so I'm gonna give you the shifty eyes 😏, because I have a hard time believing this is a real question. But no, generally speaking the ER is not private practice. Depending on what you're doing in the ER it would usually be Academic Medical or Public Health.

haha thanks.

so public health isn't just doing statistics on a population, but doctors working in hospitals can also be considered in the public health field?

Well it depends on what you do exactly. Being an emergency specialist can open doors into the public health sector. My buddy is an ER doc and he does a lot of overseas work helping governments and local communities set up emergency protocol and public health policies. But I think almost any medical specialty can work in any of the fields that NYU lists, it just depends on your interests. I'm guessing that NYU just wants to know that you've thought about why you're entering medicine; not just "I want to be a doctor to help people."

hmm I would consider ER as "private practice" in a sense. Private practice doesn't have to be outpatient. It's definitely not public health, as public health involves social interventions in the community, NOT direct medical care. I know ER docs aren't like the traditional private practice docs, but private practice is what describes them best on the NYU app at least

I never thought of ER as private practice, but then again I don't have a degree in medicine and haven't exactly learned all the ins and outs of the field. Perhaps NYU asks this question to get us to research these topics, very sneaky.

Okay, sorry for the rant, but it's REALLY HARD to write why I want to go to NYU School of Medicine if they don't even have their curriculum up on the website, or even have specific things listed for Student Activities. A paragraph on the fact that NYU students are involved in many activities, without detailing any of them does NOT help me write 1,500 characters.

check out the link that was posted....

So no interview invites yet? I was complete 8/12

Nothing yet... I was complete Aug 3. Status still "Application Complete - Under Review". Hopefully good news soon :xf:.

BTW, ar2388, that link was really helpful! Thanks 👍

where can I check the stats of my application online?

so i'm a little confused. i'm applying MD/PhD here, and i can't seem to find a separate application for it. there was a link that NYU sent to me via email for MD/PhD, but it led me to a non-existent webpage... 😕

Email/Call them. You wouldn't want to delay your application due to their negligence.

turns out they don't have a separate application for MD/PhD. :smack:

Interview invite by email this morning. They gave me a week of dates to pick from. Same week as my Downstate interview so that was convenient! Yaay for combining flights.

Since some are probably wondering, I was complete back the first week of July.

4.0 GPA (sci and non-sci) and 33R MCAT (see my MDApps)

Good luck to you all!

when were you complete?

Just got an invite as well, I was complete late July sometime. I was also able to put it the day after Mt. Sinai, can't wait for NYC!!

Congrats to all who are receiving invites! Man, your numbers are scary 😛

I wonder if anyone with a GPA as crappy as mine has been able to get an invite...

For anyone that just got an interview, what kind of time frame do they ask you to respond within?

I think they'll know that the rigor of the School of Rock equates to 4.0 if you went to a different school 😉

With your mcat? Seriously? I know people from my undergrad with lower mcat and very similar gpa that have interviewed there. It all depends on whether they like you, once you're past their cutoff. (you are)

I love SDN

Haha thanks so much. I love SDN when people put a positive spin on things 🙂

So I just received an email from them saying my letter from a science professor doesn't satisfy the requirement. For my science professor, I was trying to use a Bioengineering faculty member teaching a Bioengineering course. On the NYU website I didn't see anything defining what they meant by science and then when I called, I was told that science means basic sciences, bio, chem, etc.

So my problem is I don't have a letter from a basic science prof (this hasn't come up as an issue for any other schools) and I am now 2 years removed from college so it would be difficult for me to go back and get a decent letter from a professor who has no memory of me.

I guess I'm trying to see if anyone else has come up with this issue, and if there's anything I can do. Suggestions?

Thanks!

Some bioengineering courses qualify as a science course (for the purposes of AMCAS). what course did this prof teach? can this prof send a letter explaining that his/her course should be counted as a science course?

I have a friend who was in the same position last cycle. Just go ahead and email out random science professors, tell them you took their class, and that you require a LOR for professional school. Most of them are use to this, and have pre-made templates etc. Dont expect anything personal though, but at least it meets their requirement instead of delaying your application. If it was for a personal reference or practicing physician, thats a different case. Just passing on what my friend did which worked out well for him overall.

I had that same e-mail status and was really surprised given my letters from a physics prof and a chem prof. I e-mailed them asking what was wrong with my letters as I feel that I filled that requirement and soon got an e-mail saying that I was complete.

Interview invite this morning 🙂 Complete July 22.

Alright - guess I'm not going to be interviewed. I was complete 8/11 or 8/12 and still "under review"

I don't think that means anything.. I've seen plenty of people that were complete after me that received an interview before me. I was pretty discouraged and assumed I was passed over as well. Seeing as how I was complete over 2 weeks before you and just now got an invite, I'd think you have plenty of time to receive an invite as well.
