No one knows. It's horrible. Too much competition?

Just go there. Be yourself. Don't be nervous (everyone is very friendly)... and hope for the best. Send some thank you notes/updates/etc.

Nothing else you can really do.

Good luck to you tomorrow 👍

Too much competition?

Yea I think it really comes down to that. Each school gets so many good applicants that they aren't necessarilly differentiating between them on a consistent criterion. It just ends up being.... whatever.

More people should apply DO. I think we have a situation here where one register line at the supermarket is extremely overcrowded, and the register line right next door has like 3 people in it. And neither are 15 items or less... in fact they are both much more similar than one would think. It's just that second line has some awkward 16 year old ringing people up so people are a little unsure.....

This might be my favorite post on SDN. Good luck at your interview!

Have any interviewees from November 12 or later heard anything yet?

you didn't hear anything yet? i think you should hear from them soon because ppl interviewed the week before you started getting responses during christmas... i interviewed on 12/3 and seems like i have a long wait

i hope its hot a bad sign that we're waiting.

Yea me too. I figured it's not a waitlist though...alot of people that interviewed after us got a waitlist email already. I really hope its a nice big envelope in the mail...

Might be an obvious question, but, how is your ranking on the waitlist determined? Is it first one in, first one out? ie. someone who was added to the waitlist in September would be lower than someone who joined in February.

They told me it was Low - Middle - High but that they will not release where you are on the list.

This kind of makes me upset because if I was 'High' on the list I would make sure to continuously send updates and LOIs because I knew I still had a decent shot one the list moved. If I was 'Low' it would basically be a waste of time.

I don't see the harm in releasing this information. I already sent them an update regardless as I really loved this school when I visited.

Yeah.. I just recently sent an update to all the schools. The update including my fall grades and the new research i am participating in. This is one of the few schools I haven't heard back from yet. I guess that's not a good sign... oh well I'm still hopeful.🙄

What is the general way med schools handle waitlists?

should LOI be snail mailed or emailed?

I sent everything in by old school snail mail. I felt it was better to provide them with a hard copy instead of a electronic one.

Anyone have an idea when the next round of post interview decisions are going out?

You know what's funny? I thought this was one of my worst interviews, and I ended up getting in.

Does anyone know if SB sends out pre-interview rejections?

On the day of the interview, I felt that the student who interviewed me did not like me from the moment he met me. My MS2 interviewer and I are very different people, as he is highly involved with his family and the URM community both at SB and in general. I am more involved with research and not super close to my family. During the interview, I felt that they way he asked me questions and responded to my answers was almost guaranteed to make me fail. For example, he asked me what my top priorities would be when I was a med student. I responded 1) my schoolwork 2) helping the community and 3) relaxing and enjoying my hobbies. His response was "Your family isn't one of your priorities?" which he said in a judgmental way. After the interview, he ran into one of his friends in the elevator and said to her "This is the person I'm interviewing today...Think she'll get in". I felt that this comment was somewhat inappropriate. And it did slightly turn me off to the school, although I am sure that most students at SB are nicer than this guy was to me.

While I was at another interview I met another applicant who had this same interviewer. He agreed that this interviewer, name abbreviated "MS", was also unnecessarily rude and he was also waitlisted.

If anyone else had this interviewer and was also treated unfairly, please report it to the med school. You can do it anonymously at https://cbase.som.sunysb.edu/cbase2/public/comments/index.cfm. I really feel that this person should not be interviewing applicants. In fact, I don't think he should be allowed in med school at all with his attitude. I already reported this anonymously but I fully intend on writing a letter to the admissions committee alerting them to this problem.

I apologize if this was already discussed- I've been avoiding this forum since I submitted my secondary (I'm trying to sit tight and not stress out!).

So, for those of you who have interviewed/called the admissions office/spent much time on the campus: is the staff friendly?

I was just on the phone with the admissions committee to ask a simple question- not even an annoying one. I basically got yelled at and hung up on! WTF??? I've called 10 schools so far today with the same question and they all were incredibly helpful. Is this typical for SB? OR should I just assume it was a horrible day and let it go?
If I have an anatomy question or help with financial aid, will I get yelled at and a door slammed in my face?
Not the kind of place I want to spent four stressful years.....😡

Let me know if this is atypical?
Thanks

I've been dealing with them since my secondary and they've been extremely helpful--never rude. To me that sounds atypical. The only college I've found rude, and others have concurred, is New York Medical College.

What was the question?

has anyone who interviewed on or around 12/11 heard back? still nothing here....

i have found stony brook to be extremely helpful and nice. i would def like to go there 🙂

accepted today! received by my parents at my home address, ups? i: approx. 11/26

Damnit. I guess that means I'm out 🙁 I interviewed 11/10.... Congrats though.

Wow you interviewed 11/10 and haven't heard back yet? Maybe, they just got to the other dude's file first, I wouldn't def say you're out....

It's definitely not unusual for a school go out of order. If they'd have sent out a rejection letter you would have gotten it by now. I wouldn't lose hope.

then again, have they even rejected post interview yet? i'm still waiting from 11/3, so I am anticipating bad news.

It's probably meaningless. You're getting a biased sample here: people who are accepted are more likely to post it and people who are rejected (post or pre interview) are likely to not even look at the topic anymore. It really seems like a lot of schools review apps post interview in completely random order.

You have to remember it's probably easiest for them to reject someone. I was basically rejected from Upstate and they gave me a status change before some of the people who were accepted (but interviewed earlier) got their status change. A late response is pretty much meaningless.

accepted!!!
Interviewed - 12/10...
Overnight UPS package.. packaged received 01/13/10. So almost a month turn around time. let me know if u have any questions

Yes, that answers my question..... it sounds like the yelling & hang-up thing is not typical of their admissions staff. I guess I shouldn't hold a grudge then. Maybe the lady was having a really bad day and took it out on me. Still weird, but it's good to know that's not the case with every caller. Thanks🙂

Does anyone know if SB sends out pre-interview rejections?

yea i'm pretty sure they do!

I have been complete for a while now and my roomate called to let me know i have a small envelope from them!

I just got in 🙂

And this is the school I decided to go to, it'll be a long drive up from Alabama!

Interview was... December 14th I think.. They got back to me in just over a month. I interviewed at other schools back in October 1st, and have yet to hear from them!

Does anyone know approximately how long after completion it takes for them to send an interview invitation? Also, (sorry if this was asked previously) how long into the season do they interview? I was complete in November and am still awaiting any word...
