Possibly, I've only heard back from Downstate and Stony Brook so far and I'm waiting on a few other schools. Between those two SUNYs though, I'm not sure which one is my favorite...
does anyone know the scoop on the waitlist here?
i heard on the low that not many people at all get off.
and yet stony is giving out 300 acceptances for 150 spots.
so that means they somehow accept the perfect number of people and barely touch the waitlist.
what i wonder is how many people are on teh waitlist?
are they waitlisting like 200 with intention of only taking a handful?
Stony Brook is pretty hush hush about releasing any info about waitlists/where you are on it/etc.
All I know is when I went to my interview one of the employees in the office stated that there has been less and less waitlist movement from year to year during the past few years. Not good news for me.
yea man. i would take a waitlist to be a rejection here. straight up. i got the number for how many ppl got off the waitlist in like 08? i think the year was, and the number was just north of ZERO.
so it basicaly means that everyone who is accepted into stony brook during the interview season signs with them.
this is remarkable. they basically have their market on lock down.
oh there's definitely waitlist movement ...but i think it occurs pretty late so i wouldn't be holding my breath until the may deadline rolls around. it seems that sb accepts people very strategically and snags people they are sure will matriculate very quickly.
it doesnt seem like they send post-interview rejections right away though...seems like it's basically an acceptance or a waitlist post-interview
well do they do it like buffalo and ONLY accept as many people as there are spots (~150) during the interview season, and then start bringing people off in May?
or is the waitlist more of a longshot?
I'll give them a call and see if maybe we can find out what third we are on in say March. Or you know what, I'll just ask if I can know now, it can't hurt, so long as I'm polite 😉.
Also, Buffalo said that basically last year they accepted like over 2/3 of the waitlist. they actually got into the lower third. i doubt anyone has info on how 'deep' stonybrook got, but if they do, it would be great to know.
We are probably not seeing the post-interview rejections because people don't usually post when they're rejected.
(note in last year's thread there were probably three total pre AND post interview rejections--yeah right)
Also, the SB thread died around summer when the waitlist movement started. There was at least one SB waitlist thread that went on a little longer, and I saw 3 or 4 people who were accepted there as well.
I was going to count the number of acceptances in both threads and just see how many acceptances there were in comparison to acceptances through the year to get an idea of the proportion, but then I realized it was a waste of time. I would estimate like 6 or 7 off the waitlist though.
But even considering that, probably less than 50% of applicants use SDN. And among that 50%, even fewer actually post, and of those that actually post even fewer think "I gotta' post this on SDN!" as soon as they're accepted late in the summer. They have bigger things to worry about (like where they're going to be living for the following year). All those things considered, I think the waitlist movement is probably substantial. But keep in mind that I'm basing this on conjecture based upon conjecture which is also based on conjecture.
well i heard this through the grapevine but i heard that in 2008 stonybrook only accepted 10 people off of the waitlist. total.
so yea.
damn.
What month does SB interview up to?

I doubt it could be that low. I think they accept something like 300 applicants and a good proportion of that number has to come from the waitlist. (that 300 figure comes from eduers, and I have no clue if they're even slightly accurate: http://www.eduers.com/Medical/New_Y...ealth_Sciences_Center_School_of_Medicine.html)
If it's accurate they probably accept a ton of people off the waitlist. The stats for Buffalo are almost the same, so it's safe to assume that if Eduers is correct then they have similar acceptance rates off the waitlist.
I think someone was saying that Buffalo has such a high number of people accepted off their waitlist because no one wants to go there. I doubt it. If weather is really that much of an issue LI is only slightly different. The difference is like comparing dying by drowning vs being burned alive. And it's making the assumption that most people have multiple acceptances (I find that unlikely). Rent and living expenses are also much cheaper in Buffalo. Other than that the schools have their own strengths and weakness, and I'd personally say they're pretty equal.

Great explanation.
🙂
I think the differences are overstated. It's not like we're comparing Buffalo and Florida. The mean temperature in winter differs by 7 degrees (Fahrenheit). The biggest differences I think are the summers. The Buffalo high is 80 degrees, and NYC gets up to 108 degrees. It always surprises me that there are jerks with air conditioners in Buffalo.
Note: This is all extremely biased cherrypicking of data.
I should stop speculating about waitlists. I just think it's frustrating that they give us no information on this stuff. I think it would be different if I had at least one acceptance (I'm keeping my fingers cross for some of these DO schools).
i disagree, though. you can't compare upstate new york to long island, both culture-wise (proximity to NYC, mostly) or weather. Upstate is markedly worse in the fall through winter.
Re: waitlist--it's possible that Stony overaccepts so it doesn't get too deep into the waitlist. But, as we all know, most of this is heresay.
Upstate/Buff/Roch is definitely worse weather wise. Temperature is probably not much different. I live up here and we constantly get slammed with Regional snow storms (which LI also experiences) but we also get hit with Lake Effect snow all the time thanks to the great lakes. (I just thought the way softmed put it was funny)
Plus, LI does not typically get hit with heavy snow. The snow storm this past week is a pretty odd occurrence. It snows in LI.....but nothing like Buffalo....especially the southtowns in Buffalo.
It's weird. We usually get slammed all January and February pretty hard up here but the rest of the north east (except for us) seems to be getting it lately. I think December was far worse thus far...
You have night skiing in Buffalo, one good reason to attend UB.That is true. Thankfully, December set us up for an excellent snowboarding season. Despite my crazy crash last night haha.
Good times.

Call me crazy but I prefer the cold. Keeps me sharp and focused, almost fresh. The heat makes me sweaty, and lazy esp in the library. Just my 2 cents.
I much prefer warm weather but I am used to it after living here for 21 years. If anything, the cold helps me focus as well because "I'm not missing anything outside" haha.
Accepted today! WOOHOO! OOS. Interview 12/11. They toyed with my heart for a while, but finally got the UPS package!!
I'm also an MSTP'er and int'd on 2/17, They told us they offer ~100 int's and about 10 accepts.Invited for an MSTP interview today! interviewing 3/17!! So excited! Does anybody know how many MSTP interviews were offered this year?
They get LOTS of apps.
Does StyBrk have a status check page?
Does anyone know how receptive StonyBrook is to "in the area" emails pre interview?
Accepted yesterday! OOS...interviewed: 3rd week of January...can someone tell me how to go about gaining NY residency for next year's tuition?
Does anyone know whats the best way to find housing in Stony brook?
The Dean noted that most students find people to live with during the second look. Stony will also provide us with a list of faculty/people that rent homes to the students.
Almost all of the students live with other people....LI gets pretty expensive.
You can also look on craigslist.com.....that is the go to site for any relocation.
Good luck.....see you at second look 🙂
PM me if you wanna talk more about finding roomies.....I prob will be looking
Thanks LIDO... I visited the housing website and spoke to someone in the housing department. It seems some medical and graduate students live in Chapin - an on campus housing. In the end I will decide based on convenience and affordability. Thanks for the info and I will take your advice and try to find a roomate at second look. See you there!
there is a very extensive list of houses and apartments for rent and classmates who are looking for roommates that'll be made available to you during pre-orientation in June.
absolutely do not live on campus, especially Chapin. When you get the materials for on-campus housing promptly place them in the recycle bin.
what's wrong with the on-campus apartments?

Yes, please share. I was planning to live on campus my first year to put off buying a car. Any advice on where an older (non trad) student should look for housing?
