It's actually not my choice of words, it was the interviewers words. I paraphrased what he said there in quotes, but he did specifically use the words "coin toss" referring to one's odds of getting in after sitting in the interview chair. But yes, the process does seem rather arbitraty to an observer who never sits in on the admissions committee's meetings.

Yeah, got the waitlist here today.

Between here and Buffalo I just gotta say...what?

I withdrew as I think I'm going to Mayo rather than wait and find out what they decide...

:luck: all!

yea, waitlisted today too...

But hey, it could be worse! We weren't rejected! I don't hear any fat ladies.

But my optimism aside, does anyone know what the percentages of people accepted off the waitlist are? I know it varies from year to year, yada yada yada, and depends on whether those lucky accepted candidates matriculate somewhere else. Yet I imagine last year's numbers will be similar to this year's numbers, and here's why:

SB's tuition is hands down great value for the education. This year's economic outlook is rather similar to last year's economic outlook. In good years, students accepted to Einstein, NYU, Sinai, etc., and SB, probably wouldn't think twice about obtaining the financing to attend the above mentioned private schools. However, in an economy such as this one, those applicants who usually end up attending other schools and make SB's waitlist move...might just pick SB for it's great value.

That's just my 2 cents, for what it's worth. Please feel free to prove me wrong. In fact, I really hope I'm wrong.

I really doubt the economy will really be affecting as many students as most think, unless the student loan market dries up.

People like big names too much and honestly little has changed from two or three years ago unless you have a mortgage or have been on your own for a while (or you were really depending on your parents to pay for your MD and THEY make a decision for you...).

Now if lenders stop giving MD program student loans...

That would be a different story.

:luck:

i'm anticipating a wl since someone else on my interview day already got accepted. we're in it for the long haul i guess.

I wish they would disclose what 1/3 of the WL we were on so we know whether we realistically still have a shot.

I don't know if anyone else has discussed this, but isn't it a bit odd they ask about your debt? It's a bit like asking, "are you rich so your parents paid for all your school?" I'm obviously doing a ton of speculation here, but that's the only reason I can imagine I haven't gotten an interview here yet. Well, that or my awful writing style.

So I'd like to note that I received an interview invite from Stony Brook this afternoon. Apparently they don't factor debt into their interview invite/acceptance equation.

My hypothesis has successfully been falsified.

Sorry, Zona. I really wanted to see you get a straight out acceptance. You seem so cool. And I love your avatar. I hope that it works out in the end.

They do give out a lot of waitlists it seems.... so I take it that this is a school that is continuously waitlisting people, rather than say giving out lots of acceptances at the beginning, then waitlisting everyone else afterwords?

I'm interviewing jan 5, so in a way this makes me feel good, because it seems as though I will have a chance at an outright acceptance. Though I do sympathize with you guys that got waitlisted straight away... that does suck...

👍 Thanks premad -- We'll see, I hope so to! Hopefully you get an outright acceptance here and won't have to deal with this waiting game.

Hurry up Stony Brook, you know how I love my rejections in pairs.

When did u interview? I have an interview early next month. I have heard horror stories about their interviewing techniques... any truth?

My interviewers were both really welcoming and easy to talk to. Couldn't have asked for a better interview experience.

Not that I know of. I interviewed a few weeks ago and no one in my group had any bad interviews.

I had an MD interviewer that grilled me pretty bad. guess i got unlucky.

I was told the numbers for last year are 620 interviewed and 300 accepted (including outright and off waitlist). I'm not sure how that stacks up among the other SUNYs and other state schools.

Also, keep in mind a few factors 1) There are 4 SUNYs and many people get accepted to all 4. Also, each one has a slightly different tuition, with about an 8K difference from cheapest to priciest for in state. So even if people opt for a state school they may not pick SB and the waitlist will move. 2) SB isn't in a big city so people may still choose Downstate over SB.

Has anyone had a good faculty interview but an ehh student interview and still gotten in?

mine was great student ehh faculty. guess we'll see.

yup, I got waitlisted too. I'm kinda bummed because I really liked Stony Brook.

Here's to getting off the waitlist. :luck::xf::luck:

Welcome to the club 8mile. Here's to hoping we get off the damn list! 👍

Complete 9/15. Wonder what the likelihood of getting an interview here is.

Accepted. Interviewed two weeks ago. Goodluck to everyone still waiting to hear.

For those who already got an acceptance: did you get a phone call or email before the overnight package arrived?

Can someone send me the link to check application status...I can't seem to find it... I did all my applications on old computer and lost all my bookmarked websites when I moved to new one. Thank you.

Pretty sure there isn't one. Unless I've just been missing out this whole time....

Oh ok. I wasn't sure myself. I have been really busy this semester and haven't checked my status in a while, just been relying on notifications through mail and email.

There is none 🙄

At least you're not like me. I've had 3 crappy interviews and 2 awesome interviews and been waitlisted at all the schools. You'd think I would have been accepted by now just because of probability. Nope.

So i have an interview on 1/5....

does that mean that i am interviewing for the waitlist? i ask because at some schools, a january interview does mean that you are interviewing for the waitlist. just figured i'd ask to see if I can know ahead of time lol.

i interviewed at SB in March, and was interviewing for open spots in the class. in fact, four people from my interview day are now in my class...so it seems unlikely that you would be interviewing for the WL in january...

awesome, good to know. i just ask because some schools take the strategy of: accept as many people as soon as possible, then start WLing people.

though it seems that public schools tend not to take that approach. the schools with that approach seem to be the privates that think everyone thinks they are a safety.

i wish i heard back from SB, it's been 5 weeks and i really want to go here!

Is it normal to wait that long? I was considering calling to find out how much longer they anticipate.
