If you don't mind a 15 to 25 minute commute, Manlius, DeWitt or Fayetteville three surrounding suburbs, are nice areas, especially the first two. If you're more into the extremely limited downtown experience you can try Armory, Hanover or Clinton Square, each about 5 to 10 minutes away. There are a couple of nice neighborhoods in North Syracuse, around James St. Most of the university kids in the area live in houses on Lancaster, Ostrom, Livingston, Sumner, Ackerman, Euclid, and Clarendon. The upside is the price and proximity, the downside is the neighborhoods can be a little rowdy and noisy, and many of the apartments are pretty decrepit. When the undergrads go away for holidays there are a lot of break ins. I think
