How long should the 2 essays be?
I feel like I could go on and on for my 4 interests but I don't want to go overboard.

What's the ballpark length?

My first essay (Interests) was about 3 pages. My second essay (Mistakes) was a little over one page.

I wouldn't freak out over the essays. I got the feeling that they were nothing more than conversation starters.

Ms. Welch said at my interview that people who are accepted get a phone call, high priority alternate and hold lists get an email, and rejections get a letter if that helps

there's a discussion of this a month or so back, a bunch of people that were hp list received an e-mail. then again, there were also a bunch of people that didn't get a phone call but still got the acceptance packet so i guess it's really not a definite rule to go by.

I was accepted but never got a phone call. I saw "Decision Made" on the status site and started to worry when I didn't get a call. I got the acceptance in the mail about a week later.

Hey guys, congrats to all that got accepted! I got in early assurance and just sent in my application to live in Jefferson Tower. I was wondering where you who are going to Upstate plan on living. Do most first years live in Jefferson/Madison?

What's this about two essays? On intvw day?

Once you've scheduled your interview, you are given two essay prompts to answer. You must upload them to the system a minimum of one week before your interview. This is all the interviewer will have on you at the interview, since the interview is closed file.

jefferson is nice, i think madison is better though (but costs more)

clarke is too expensive for what you get

beyond that you could try finding a house to rent or get a townhouse

What areas near the school are nice? I wouldn't mind having a short commute if the neighborhood is a significant improvement.

If you don't mind a 15 to 25 minute commute, Manlius, DeWitt or Fayetteville three surrounding suburbs, are nice areas, especially the first two. If you're more into the extremely limited downtown experience you can try Armory, Hanover or Clinton Square, each about 5 to 10 minutes away. There are a couple of nice neighborhoods in North Syracuse, around James St. Most of the university kids in the area live in houses on Lancaster, Ostrom, Livingston, Sumner, Ackerman, Euclid, and Clarendon. The upside is the price and proximity, the downside is the neighborhoods can be a little rowdy and noisy, and many of the apartments are pretty decrepit. When the undergrads go away for holidays there are a lot of break ins. I think www.syracuse.com has some classifieds, and if you want to know what's going on around the university campuses check out SU's student newspaper, The Daily Orange. You can get the latest info on whatever burglaries are going on in the area. Feel free to PM any questions. I grew up in Syracuse and did my undergrad there.

Thanks for the great info! I actually looked up some apartments in the suburbs you talked about and they are cheaper than clark. So it may be worth a look. But I wonder if as a first year it would be the smarter choice to be housed with a bunch of classmates to make the transition smoother?

No prob! I can definitely see the appeal of living with classmates, especially for those coming straight out of college, new to the area or just want to be close so they can save time commuting (especially in the winter when the roads are bad) and avoid potential hassles with landlords. Not to mention the social and academic benefits of being surrounded by people who are in the same situation. I think for non-traditional students with families or significant others, though, sometimes it's nice to have a bit more living space.

Just got my decision email at 8:30 this morning

high priority alternate (*intense crying)

guess its better than rejection though

well, i'll be signing out for the next five months till the waitlist starts getting some action

best of luck to you all

Sorry to keep the questions rolling out, but I was wondering have you had a chance to see inside Clark and the other tower? How do they look?

That I can't tell you, but it looks like some other people in this forum can. I don't interview until the 27th. Congrats on the acceptance!

Let's get srs for a second here. Is there a class of 2014 facebook group yet?

Anyone get off the HPA recently? other than superstars like bannie?

I've also got my interview (2) on the 27th but I wasn't asked to write essays. Maybe b/c I'm an MD/PhD applicant?

I didn't even choose the date, it was just given to me.

MD/PhD??

I'm out. I have no idea about that one. Good luck, though!!!!!!

Got the call yesterday afternoon from a "restricted" number, about 2 weeks post-interview. Hang in there, guys.

CONFIRMED: from the office, MD/PhD's don't have to write the essays.

Hopefully I'll see some of you up there in a few days.

Anyone who interviewed 1/6 get an acceptance? shoot me a pm. it was a fun group, we had a couple characters there.

Is high priority alternate the same thing as waitlist. I heard that they choose students off the waitlist by which clinical campus they chose. The admissions staff that talked to my interview group said that there are more Binghamton spots open so those who choose "Syracuse prefered but will accept Binghamton" have a better chance of getting off the waitlist. It was a bit confusing tho...😕 I am awaiting a decision (prob in 3-4 weeks).:xf:

Chooka, did you have a backround check email before this? Thanks!!! 😎

I received my acceptance in the mail on November 12th. I received the background check e-mail on January 6th.

🙁

*feels 😡*

I was never on the HPA. It just took mail 1.5mths to crawl to the cold north where I reside.

but yayyy! I'm a superstar!!! 😀

mmmm there should be some movement from me. I considered Upstate seriously but I'm too sure about the cold north anymore... haha
but I'll be holding it till March... sorry to the people who are on HPA.

GOod to see other people are 50/50 too. I'm waiting for waitlist movement at Georgetown, but right now I'm pretty much thinking Ill end up at Upstate. But who knows!! It's weird to have your future up in the air, but its kinda fun for me. EITHERWAY I'm leaving CA for somewhere faaar away. New places ahead!👍

We are definitely fortunate to have the LUXURY of choice... I'm pretty much gonna move from sunny Miami to either NY or Midwest. I've never lived in a cold place so I'm dreading the winters. Personally finances and "livability" will be a big deciding factors. What's gonna influence your decision making?

heh guys. i love this thread because all the people are so friendly 😀

for me, i dont know yet. im just gonna wait till march when i hear from the rest of the schools before i make a choice.

i have no real preferences now because i went to a school and it blew me away, and it became my dream school, making me feel (with all humbleness) that it makes no diff going anywhere else. (something like you dont feel complete even if u have your pick of the girls in the world, if that ONE girl that you like isnt yours.. not sure if this is possible in reality anyway, but hahaha i guess thats why its so unreal right now for me in this process)

so im just going to wait, and then make a more informed decision when i knw all my choices. and definitely. a luxury to have options 🙂

bernoull. u sure u up for the cold winters up north? 😉

Hey, i have a friend going through all of this, I was just wondering about this medical school status page. Where is it, and how do you log into it to check your status with these medical schools?

If you guys are cool, you must join me at Upstate. 😎

For me it's a no-brainer. I like the people, the vibe I got at the school, the cost of living, and of course the in-state tuition. A friend of mine I graduated HS with is an MS1 here too, which will be nice. My MS4 interviewer explained the place to me like this, "A lot of people will say about their school, 'oh, the people here are so nice,' but at Upstate it really is the case." And judging by everything I experienced on interview day he was right.

Well yeeea, I really did like the Upstate atmosphere, and my student interview was sooooooooo down to earth and relaxed. But my only reservation is that, IM MOVING FROM California, and its gonna be a huge transition no matter where I go I think. But right now SUNY is my only acceptance so Im focused on it for now.

Lol don't forget to breathe.

And I typed all that only using my thumb! 👍

Well I did not get an email about a status page unfortunately, and after just viewing this page awhile I got nervous because it seemed like everyone else had a status page. My friend signed me up for this and asked you all because she follows this more than I have but I'm glad she did. It has helped me see more into this whole process I have been going through. Just got my first acceptance today though!! I am class of 2014 at SUNY Upstate! Have not gotten a letter yet, but got a call. THey left a message actually on my phone. THey said they are going to send a letter this week! 👍 Good luck to everyone 🙂

I'm excited to go to Upstate and all, but I can't understand why people leave gorgeous, warm places for arctic NY! I've been in Ithaca for 4 years though so what's another 4...

Got the call this morning! First acceptance. Really fired up. Good luck to everyone, I feel for everyone waiting but I wanted to celebrate with the rest of my 2014 class!! What a great school 😀

I know it may not mean much from another SDNer but hang in there, it can happen. 👍
