I fell in love with this school when I interviewed, didn't get in though 🙁

HPA! *sigh*

I got into Stonybrook though, which makes me happy. 😳

Absolutely loved my interviewers though. Kids were really nice too.

Just checked my voice mail on a whim because of you guys and also had a message!! I'm so excited! Instate, interviewed on December 14th.

I'm excited to go to Upstate and all, but I can't understand why people leave gorgeous, warm places for arctic NY! I've been in Ithaca for 4 years though so what's another 4...

I had a super crazy semester (family, work & school issues) when I completed my secondaries, therefore all my initial plans went out da window. I didn't even complete at 5/6 of my state schools (including my 1st choice).. it was just crazy, so I targeted schools with minimal secondary stuff (no/short essays type deal etc...) so I really didn't think too much about geography/weather/city etc... Well isn't it good to change environment, have 4 seasons etc etc?? It's time for me to freeze a little...:scared::scared::scared:

word on the street is that upstate will be re-evaluating the applicants that were put on hold in the following weeks. here's hoping they look favorably on us!:xf:

Got the call this morning! First acceptance. Really fired up. Good luck to everyone, I feel for everyone waiting but I wanted to celebrate with the rest of my 2014 class!! What a great school 😀

I know it may not mean much from another SDNer but hang in there, it can happen. 👍

congrats guys! 👍

Anyone thinking about the summer anatomy thing? I've been off 2 years and another summer of working full time just doesn't appeal to me.

Sounds like a great program, but for me moving to NY early would mean alot of mula. SOOO im just taking anatomy at a community college next to my house in CA starting next week! ;p

Got the call yesterday afternoon from a "restricted" number, about 2 weeks post-interview. Hang in there, guys.

Damn, 2 week turnaround???? That is quite quick. I interviewed on 1/11.... so damn lol.

also today... i noticed that they took down my 'sign up for an interview!' thing on my status page - should I take that to mean anything??

Oh really...is that just to get yourself ready or what?

Yeah, I was very surprised....and this was obvious to whoever it was calling me

gyyyah! im at decision made.

no email. so hopefully im not waitlisted.... but accepted! lol.

does the waitlist email normally go out quickly after a 'decision is made'?

kinda hoping i avoided it. i kinda dont want to deal with another waitlist... would practically just want an acceptance/rejection at this point lol.

i know the phone call sometimes doesn't come till like a few days later.

and the comittee always meets on tuesdays, i believe.... it is a wednesday....

so we'll see what the hell happens.

My waitlist email came on the monday of the following week.

So is everyone waitlisted post-interview on the HPA list or are there two different post-interview waitlists???

Yea, I never took anatomy in undergrad, all my friends in med school and chiro school tell me it helps alot. Plus im starting to get bored out of my mind.

true, true. Does the call usually come the day your status changes, or the day after? or even later?

just wondering if my 'window' is running out, lol.

He notification system is random, different people had different notifications. My call came about a week after "decision-made" I was going nuts check da mail n email. There's really nothing to do but wait, this whole process is a huge waiting game.

Best of luck on ur decision

I interviewed on the 11th too. Were you the guy wearing the vest? Or someone else?

nah, that wasn't me. remember the guy with the suspenders? how hot did he look? jk. no homo.

yea i was there on the 11th.

my interview with the professor went phenomenally. she ended it with 'please seriously consider us! hope to see you back in central new york!'
and i thought.... was i just accepted??? all i could say to it was 'i will seriously consider you'

then came the student interview. this person was complete unenthusiastic, seemed weirded out by me, and there was like 5 awkward moments. if i had to guess the awk moments were the 'fault' of the interviewer, but hey this person could have put it on me and given me a bad rating. and i managed to fumble my why medicine answer in that interview. eugh lol. needless to say this interview was a bomb.

i have said this before, but i feel like the interview is like the deal breaker. no matter no bad your stats are, i feel like if you interview well enough, you can make them think you are a fit and get accepted outright. where as no matter how good your stats are, if the interview is anything less than good, you will be waitlisted or rejected. thus, i am very worried, lol.

I was put or pre-interview hold 12/2. Is everyone placed on pre-interview hold if they are not invited for an interview, or are some people rejected at the beginning?

i know cuz i read 17 pages of SUNY Upstate + last year's thread.

You will know too.
Take my word for it. I only speak the facts.

Of course, its still "more or less". you have that 0.00001% CHANCE AND YOU SHOULD STILL HOPE AND SEND UPDATES of course.

You were the suspenders guy??? Or were you simply admiring his nice style? Funny, I thought you'd look like your avatar when I was reading your previous post. Anyhow, my student interview was a negative too. I actually forgot the name of my first interview when asked by the student.😱 Hopefully they don't weigh the student portion too highly.

Anyhow, well see
Good Luck

haha, no i'm just admiring his style. he went to men's warehouse asking for a med school interview suit and they gave him something that made him look like a slick 1980's investment banker. oh dear, i sound like the fashion police.... i mean either way he looked good and i doubt the adcom rates on fashion.

and no, that's not me in the avatar. that's a picture of d'angelo... he's an r&b singer that was bigger in the 90's... i'm white.

Hey all,
I'm a current first year @ Upstate. I'm new to this SDN thing but joined for residency info when I came across this thread.
I see a lot of worry and nail-biting! Please, ask anything you might want clarified about the admissions process here, I can try to help best I can. Also, if you have any questions about the school or living in sunny, tropical Syracuse, don't hesitate to PM/ask me. I'm new to Syracuse but have learned a lot and found a lot to love about the school in the 8 short months I've been here (I took summer anatomy, a major PLUS)
So, don't let this crap process get you guys down, there's light at the end of the tunnel... sometimes it's just a long tunnel.

I'm considering Summer Anatomy but then again, I want to enjoy Summer, travel back home, unwind b4 signing over my life to Med School. How much more of an advantage is it doing SA as opposed to taking regular anatomy. Knowing what you know now, is the benefit worth giving much needed R&R, travel, family time??

thanks

I had a status page change on a friday and got the phone call on a tuesday!! (monday was MLK day so it could have been earlier). Still on the lookout for the manilla envelope, might give a call on monday since it's been two weeks.

Anyways, I'm super happy that I got into this school and I am def signing up for summer anatomy. I too am tired of working (took time off) and am not looking forward to another summer of the same. Plus, make life that much easier when the fall semester starts and make some friends early on.

Actually it's white 😀

Congrats! And I guess see ya in summer anatomy. I'm in the same boat as you.....worked for the past two years, and I'm getting kind of sick of it. I'm not really making much net income either, it goes to living expenses, so what's the point?

I too have been working and am strongly considering taking the summer anatomy course. Maybe we could find some REALLY cheap housing together! Just a thought cause I am still only considering it.

Cant wait for the white envelope! Havent gotten mine yet, did get a phone call. Exciting. 👍

Yea, what's the deal with housing....if we decide to live in Clark for the school year, do we live there for the summer too? I still don't know where I'm gonna live, probably Clark.

errrmmmm damn. got rejected.

i am possibly the worst interviewer everrr. im at 3.9/36s and have good ec's, and have now been rejected from 3 of the suny's.

i'll live though. for real though, i think i need to go see an interview coach, and learn how to speak. i am far too nervous and awkward in these interview situations.

this is getting ugly. but for what its worth im ok about it, because i understand that i got rejected for a reason. i dont see this as an injustice, i got what i deserved. dayum.

i did not know i was this bad at this. but o well, i suppose i only have room to improve...

Hey, I am really sorry aboutt that. Persevere my friend, you got 3 interviews which means your problem CAN be fixed and you can make it through. Do you have any other interviews this round? Some advice I could give you (not that its worth much), but I did mock interviews with friends and tapped them so I could see how stupid I looked before I actually had my interviews. This helped me out A LOT. Keep at it. Good luck! :xf::luck:

Hey,
The Pros are: 1. Only one class to worry about, so there was plenty of socializing/ night life type things (other than the few days immediately prior to an exam). 2. I felt the small anatomy lab was helpful for me to get the professors attention and made it possible for the whole group of us (between 30-40 usually) to socialize. By the end, we all knew each other very well because there were only 40 and we spent all day in lecture and lab together. 3. The free time during the first 4 units (from August-November) while the rest of the class takes anatomy was awesome. Personally, I shadowed every week in three different specialties. Some set up research in the spare time and others just took it easy. 4. The best part for me was the fact that I got to focus my studying time on the Biochem/genetics course. I hadn't taken these in 2 years, so I appreciated the extra time to spend on re-learning the wonderful world of biochem.

The Cons: 1. When the rest of the class comes, you tend to continue to hang out with the summer anatomy group simply because you know them well and know what you have in common. That said, we are all grown adults, no one was 'outcast' because they were in summer anatomy. When we made the effort to meet everyone from our class, there was no problem at all. 2. You do lose a large chunk of your summer. There are three weeks between anatomy ending and the orientation, during which I went on vacation and many others did as well. If you are coming straight from undergrad, you might feel differently about losing your summer.

I took time off between undergrad and med school, so I felt summer anatomy was a great way to get back into the swing of things. Given the chance, I would undoubtedly do it again, just for the extra time when the rest of the classes start and the smaller anatomy lab group.

Also, remember- medical school is not a death sentence. You will continue to have a life and have time to yourself. If you don't have outside interests and choose to spend 100% of your time on medicine, you aren't benefiting yourself or your future patients. Taking care of yourself is just as important as taking care of your patients.

Hope this helps a little. Let me know if you're curious about anything else re Upstate.

Hey,

Thank you very much. I am curious about housing, how was this arranged? Cost? etc. Thanks again!

Hey,

Thank you very much. I am curious about housing, how was this arranged? Cost? etc. Thanks again!

To your above question: Yes, if you choose to live in Clark you can move-in in June for summer anatomy. I chose to live in an off-campus apartment because I hadn't been in a dorm in 4 years and wasn't crazy about the idea of going back. Home-owners/landlords in the area look for and/or specify that they would like graduate/medical students, so finding housing in June was rather easy. Most 2,3,4th year students are in off-campus housing or Madison apts/townhouses.

Cost wise- I'm not too certain about Clark or Madison, but we pay 675 total for a very nice 2 bedroom apartment (with garage parking for those wonderful lake-effect snow days!).

Need a car where you live? And thank you for your help! 👍

I rode my bike until mid-december when the snow really started. Then I got lazy/lost my motivation to bike in the snow and now drive and park in the student lot. Once the snow starts to taper off I will start riding my bike again. It's about a 7 min bike ride from my house and a 3 min drive.

So the short answer is- No. You don't need a car and plently of people don't have one, you'll just be walking a bit more.

Note: You will need a car for 3rd and 4th year for clerkships like family med or others that are community based clerkships.
