Wow, he's still there? I'm pretty sure you are talking about the same guy I interviewed with when I was applying over five years ago. It was a strange experience which, needless to say, left me with the impression that Wayne wasn't a very friendly school (though maybe that perception isn't an accurate reflection of the other faculty there). In hindsight I laugh about it (because I wound up getting acceptances from several other schools where the atmosphere seemed friendlier in locations I preferred to Detroit). Still, I definitely sympathize with those who were considering this school as their #1 and end up having such a disheartening experience.

Yes! I was wait listed in December and this next decision day feels as big as the last. I know they only move a few people off of the wait list each month, but I really hope I'm one of them.

I was waitlisted in December as well... does anyone know approx. how many people they take of the waitlist each month? and what are the chances of getting accepted off the waitlist? Anxious for tomorrow though!

Someone posted earlier on this post that they have a close connection with someone on the admissions committee and they normally take off 6-10 people from the wait list every month. That, of course, can vary depending on how the months' interviews have gone.

Someone has also posted earlier that the chances of getting an acceptance at any point after an interview is about 78% (for OOS and IS).

I don't know about 78%, that seems ridiculously high.........and very unreasonable........

I don't know...they seem to do some heavy screening pre-interview and they have a large class. the 78% figure (if it's accurate) must certainly include ALL acceptances, not just matriculations. I'd think a lot of people withdraw post-acceptance (especially us OOSers, as the tuition is ridiculous)

Well if you don't believe it, then get the 2009 version of USNWR, because that's what it says in there.

This is a direct paste from usnews.com where I also have a subscription:

Fall 2008 Admissions Statistics
Total admissions data 4259 applied, 754 interviewed, 588 were accepted, 290 enrolled...588/754 = 77.98%
In-state admissions data 1396 applied, 522 interviewed, 406 were accepted, 246 enrolled...406/522 = 77.78%
Out-of-state admissions data 2863 applied, 232 interviewed, 182 were accepted, 44 enrolled...182/232 = 78.45%

Anyone know if the "applied" is before screening or after?
 
Hi, I had a few questions about Wayne State..

In the interview, do interviewers have access to both your primary and secondary (supplementary) application?

Also, after clearing the screening process, are you scored only on your secondary application responses?

What if your secondary application responses are similar to your personal comment essay from the primary application? Will you be penalized for this?

You haven't submitted your secondary yet? I'm not sure when the deadline is but it's got to be getting close. Anyway, the website does state that interviewers have your complete application including secondary essays. When I talked to a lady in admissions before the cycle started she said that your entire application is reviewed throughout the process of deciding whether to admit you, but secondary essays are very important as they provide the committee with a lot more information about you as a person. For your third question, I would try to stay as far away from repeating information already in your personal statement as they are trying to learn more about you. I don't think they're looking for redundancy, although a little overlap is probably acceptable as long as it makes your essay better (would be lacking without it) and you don't just reiterate what is in your PS. After all, they do give you 3 choices per group.

did anyone get a "no change in status" email? Because I haven't received anything yet. Usually I have the email before noon but this cycle its like they forgot about me.

Isn't today also a "call-in" day? Why don't you just try that?

Ok, I was waitlisted on the same date as you. I guess we can assume no email means no change in status.

Same, no change, siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh. Should we send updates before the Feb date?
 
I've actually sent updates already and it doesn't look like it isn't making much of a difference. This alternate list is really frustrating.
 
Interviewed on September 15.
Waitlisted on October 21.
No change in status on November 25 and December 23.

Today, this email:

"There has been no change to your status for this round of offers and you are still on our alternate list. Your application will be considered for our next round of offers and decisions will be made on February 24, 2010. Thank you for your interest in Wayne State University School of Medicine."

I just hope they don't keep me on until the summer . . .
 
I got that same email. Does this mean it's in or out come February?
 
Ahh on the alternate list! not the best outcome but I am still excited about it! Does anyone know how they group alternates? Is it just by the order in which you were placed on the list? Also, does it seem to move pretty quickly?

I do know that they give you a rating (3.0 being the highest) which is based on a vote by the admissions committee. The rating system may only take effect after the regular rounds of offer are complete though which would mean that until the last official offer day is done they probably just review everyone on the alternate list.
 
Alternate list here, too...really frustrating...

they take the top ## on the list each acceptance date.. so basically, if you are on the alt list, you will remain on that list with your score until you are in the top ## for that cycle.. after the last date, acceptances are given as spots open up

Don't feel to bad if you haven't got an acceptance after being placed on the alternate list. I was in the first round of interviews and still am currently on the alternate list. I hear stories from people that I know that were accepted LATE in the cycle. I hope this doesn't happen to me, but I guess it is a common thing and you cannot do anything but wait. Their selection on who they accept really bothers me though. I know people who got into prestigous schools, but were either never interviewed or waitlisted at Wayne (uh?...). The phd I do research for actually recieved her phd at Wayne, and she said that they seem to take older people. I don't know how true this statement is, but it does seem as if they are bias in some aspects (undergrad school you went to etc.). Getting back on topic, for those who have recieved and interview, believe in statistics and hope that the 78% acceptance holds true for you. I know it may be different this year but remain optimistic!

unfortunately they wont let you know your place on the list.. just forced to play the waiting game. although i do look forward to each months acceptance date, i imagine that most "waitlisters" will hear back in the spring

I don't think that is really true for Wayne. For instate, they are the most "traditional" accepting school of the 3. U of M is a top 20 school and takes that caliber applicants where as MSU is the one that tends to take a little older applicant....people who have an interesting story. Wayne often takes the people with good GPAs and MCAT coming right out of undergrad, of course when your class is 300+ of course there will be a wide variety. Not that those descriptions can't be broken, but that is the general belief and trend.

Anyway, alternate list email today. Oh well, probably going to MSU or out of state anyway.
 
Does anyone know if they sent out interview invitations as well or will they be meeting the first of next month to decide on their next set of interviewees?

I would call and check. I called yesterday and found out they sent me an invite on 1/ 25. Don't know the date yet since its in the mail. Does anyone know how much time you get till the interview? I am scared that it will get here saying I only have 7 days to make it to Detroit. I hope they give us advance warning.
 
Accepted! I was placed on the alternate list in December, so don't lose hope! They do remove people from the alternate list!

My letter was dated Dec 3rd for an interview on January 4th--you'll have 3-4 weeks.

Between the two, I'm leaning towards MSU because I got a better vibe there on interview day (I feel like it's a common theme that people leave their interview day at Wayne with some mixed feelings). In my opinion, Wayne has the upper hand in terms of the hospital system they're affiliated with. But I definitely want to end up at a med school where I feel comfortable, hence the MSU preference.

But I'm actually still on the waitlist at my top choice, so hopefully I'll have some luck coming off the waitlist there too!:xf:
 
This may have been covered before, but I am very interested to know how difficult or common it is for an OOS to become IS? Or how tuition generally works for OOS in general.

If you haven't established Michigan residency prior to starting medical school, you won't get it at any time during medical school at either MSU or Wayne State. There might be exceptions if your parents were to move here, however. But I am not sure. Basically, you have to move here for a year and work (these days a good paying job in Michigan is very hard to find) to establish residency and then you can be considered instate for tuition purposes.
 
Does anyone know about the deposit to hold our seat? Do they send that info with the formal letter?
 
Accepted on Wednesday off the Alternate list (put on alternate list in december). oos. first acceptance. unbelievable. :laugh:😍:soexcited:
