Hey guys, i need some help i'm planning on sending my aacomas in now (aug 1, 2009) but it wont have my mcat in (im taking that for my first time this month august 21) and i was wondering is it really late if i send aacomas in with mcat by the time i get my mcat back sept 21ish???? Or should i submit aacomas now? Or should i submit aacomas in right after i take my mcat? I know it takes 4-6 weeks to process. But i need a good mcat to be competitive so please if anyone can help me out that'd be great!

Submit now. You don't need your MCAT score to be verified, so you'd be wasting a few weeks by waiting on it. It'd be a better idea, timewise, to submit now and release your score during verification.

Yes but is it late if I send my aacomas in right now for this app cycle?

I recently submitted my AACOMAS and see from the verification thread that it's been taking at least a month to verify. There also seems to be a lag of 1-2 weeks before it is submitted to schools?

I submitted my AMCAS in June and am probably early in the MD cycle. I waited an addition 2 months for AACOMAS primarily because I only recently decided to also apply to DO schools.

How late am I and how are my chances for an interview effected? When do DO schools start interviews? Have they already sent out secondary applications? Why is there there the time lag between verification and release to schools?

If it helps I have a strong application with 3.9GPA for top Ivy school, 34MCAT, disadvantaged background and compelling life story, very unique leadership positions, clinical research, and lots of (MD) shadowing.

As a last question, I hope to also shadow a DO and get a letter of evaluation while I wait for verification. How do I contact a DO? Surely there are many in my area, but it seems odd to just cold call their offices and leave messages for their assistants?

Thank you very much and all my best!

If you go on the AOA website there is a DO search tool that will help you locate a DO, that is if they are a member of the AOA. Applying now with AACOMAS is getting late, and you would not get secondaries from most schools probably until around late September if you submitted today and got all your letters in. It isnt really too late but considering that some schools already started sending out interview invites you should get on it.

COnsidering your stats I think you will be fine with MD schools. Surely you have gotten some interview invites already......?

This is what I was thinking. Your stats are solid, and really, it isn't that late. I think right now is about average.

Hi!

Im a graduate and i applied super late last year ( a week before deadlines because i was waiting on my DO letter and i thought u had to send it w/ the secondary, DOH!) to Nova and Lecom-B but i got waitlisted at lecom and rejected at Nova

My stats are:

3.41 overall gpa, 3.35 science, 3.55 non-science

26P MCAT (8 PS , 8 VR, 10 BS)

Extra Curriculars:

30+ Hours DO shadowing
120 Hours of Volunteering at Moffitt Cancer Center

I am a founding member of a chapter of an Asian Cultural fraternity and am very involved in the Asian Student Clubs.

I sent out my primaries today.

Nova is my top choice, PCOM-GA is my #2 and LECOM-B is my #3, im also applying to PCOM, CCOM, Western-COMP, and AZ-Midwestern.

WAMC's?

What are my chances?

Am i too late to apply? I submitted my AACOMAS 7/15 and am still getting verified =/

lol sorry im confused what do u mean it wont matter?

Haha. I meant that if you don't submit your application at all, it won't matter if it's late or not. Submit now unless you have a valid reason to stall it. 🙂

You're still relatively early right now and would have a very good chance at getting interviews. Interviews usually begin in August, I believe, and secondary applications have already been sent out to those who are complete. There's a lag because AACOMAS is slow.

Am i too late to apply? I submitted my AACOMAS 7/15 and am still getting verified =/

You obviously haven't been keeping up with the verification threads/questions. You will be waiting AT LEAST another two weeks for verification. And no, you're not late, so don't worry.

It looks like you want to stay on the NE primarily...so I would add UNECOM (Maine) and if your not scared of the OOS tuition I would add WVSOM also. But if your not partial to the NE then I would also add: LECOM-B, NSUCOM, CCOM (not sure about their MCAT cutoff), DMU, AZCOM, Western, RVU, and the Touros(Ca and Nv).

lol sorry im confused what do u mean it wont matter?
thnx semicolon for the responses but i was wondering if applying now or in september (like 21st ish) after my mcat score comes back, would be a big deiffernece? I guess what i'm asking is would late sept count as a late applicant? i'm already for now! but it's just that mcat lol

what are my chances? any input on anywhere else i should apply to?

Anyone ever hear of anyone getting interviews/being accepted with a 5 in verbal or an otherwise low score in verbal?

Is it possible my relatively higher GPA (3.74) could offset this?

I just got my MCAT score back: 25M - VR 10 PS 7 BS 8

(very interesting writing score, I suppose my expose on Edgar Allen Poe and Marshall Mathers didn't go over too well).

Anyway, I was hoping for 20 at best. I was elated. Is it wrong of me to celebrate a 25?

I have a 3.25 sci GPA and a 3.18 cum. I also have a masters degree with a 3.4 average.

I applied to 16 schools, and will be complete at most of them when AACOMAS gets off their butts and reads my MCAT score (i'm already verified, and I released my scores via Thx yesterday).

Anyone have any thoughts on my chances? Thanks a lot everyone!

Man i was soo happy when i got my 25 (had a 22 previously), then after reading everyone elses scores i got semi-depressed, then decided to live with the 25. So no, i wouldn't be disappointed. I don't think you'll be a shoe-in, but most likely you'll get accepted to a few schools. congrats 🙂

While a 25 is obviously not ideal, it's just around the averages for most DO schools. You'll be fine. I wouldn't retake it if I were you.

The only concern you should have is your GPA, which you can't do much about anyway.

Usually you should have a higher MCAT to compensate for a lower GPA, or a higher GPA to compensate for a lower MCAT. I think you will still get a couple interviews though.

FWIW I have a 24Q MCAT (5VR, 9PS, 10BS) a 3.74 cum. 3.6 science, 3.8 non-science GPA......and people on these forums are telling me I don't have much of a shot at DO schools.

I was wondering if I would be at a tremendous disadvantage at NYCOM with my scores 9/11/5. I completely messed up on my verbal section (stupid experimental passage!). Anyway I have a 4.0 GPA and did a lot of research, teaching, and volunteer work. I am not a minority and English is my native language =(

Hi everyone!

I was just wondering if it's too late for me to fill out the DO app service or should I wait next year? I don't have a DO letter, so will this hurt my chances?

You never know with DO schools. And you never know until you apply. Take the MCAT and see what happens. Pre-meds are so obsessed with chances, etc. DO schools want well rounded, interesting, articulate individuals who are not going to drop out when things get hard. I had a friend who didn't think her application was strong enough, I urged her to apply - she reluctantly did. Got accepted to 4 schools!! Put your app out there and see.

Here I Go:

3.7cgpa, 3.6sgpa, 3.8non-gpa, 24Q mcat (nothing lower than 7), lots of ec's (president of clubs), volunteering for 400+hrs at hopsital, first author-abstract, presentation/poster, multiple part-time positions throughout college - 20hrs/wk for every year in college, tutoring, mentored underpriveledged city children, musician (for fun), md letter, no do letter. IL resident who is very interested in CCOM (anyone know if I have a chance here?) and applied to 10 DO schools. any success stories to ccom would really give me confidence 🙂

Suggestions will be appreciated

thanks!!

Hehe, you literally have the same exact GPA/MCAT as me...

Guys...I'm having a really tough time deciding if I should retake the MCAT for DO schools.

Scores are:

5VR, 9PS, 10BS, 24Q GPA: 3.74 cum, 3.6 science, 3.8 non-science

I also don't know if I should take the September MCAT or the January MCAT...any advice?

It is definitely not too late, and plenty of applicants have received acceptances without DO letters, but you'll be limited to applying to schools that do not require them. Getting one would probably increase your chances, though, and you still have some time to do so.

Your GPA is certainly high enough. The 24 on the MCAT is probably just below the average, but the fact that you've got at least 7's across the board is a plus. EC's look good (nice mix of research, clubs, and volunteer activities 👍). The lack of a DO letter will eliminate a few schools that are strict in requiring one, but I'm sure you already knew that.

IMHO, I would say that you have as good a shot as anyone at getting into a DO school this cycle. Just make sure to get those apps in EARLY! Good Luck!!! :luck:

I posted here before, but nobody answered my post. Please , can someone gives me an idea about my chances for DO schools
non traditional 33y , RN, 3.1cGPA, 3.5sGPA, 27P (10BS, 9PS, 8VR) MCAT and good LORs. should I retake the MCAT? or do I have any chances for DO schools?

I would say you are a very strong candidate. Write a good PS and submit everything in a timely fashion. You should get one acceptance. Your GPA is a bit low but I think you have other experiences that will make up for that.

This is excellent advice for all applicants, I hope to be an example like this.

I think you're a good candidate. X years as an RN should give you plenty of exposure and experience to justify your desire to switch careers.

Premedmind .. you come and ask the same questions and get the same answers. YOU NEED TO RETAKE THE MCAT. I am sorry if this is coming off strong but a 5 in verbal isnt going to cut it anywhere unless you MAY get luck. But the chances of that are so slim that is wont be worth the money.

Hello Everybody,
I know it's going to be long but I really wanted to ask your opinions. I am foreign student (with permanent resident status), completed my undergraduate degree (Biology). I have been in US about 7 years, and I am speaking English only 7 years (I started learning English after I come here). So my language ability is not that fluent, but I speak pretty good (people can't tell that I am from Asia). But for some reason I suffered so much from MCAT verbal section. So here are my stats:

Overall GPA 3.79 (I worked very hard to get this far and completed my B.S with Honor)
Science GPA 3.75 (Most of my biology courses are all A's, but received B on o-chem)
Non-science GPA 3.85

My first attempt in MCAT (Aug 2008) was 26 O (PS 11, V 6, BS 9). Surprised by PS since it is my weak part, but even depressed with verbal…Also thought I could do better on BS. I prepared very hard for couple of months for this test.
My second attempt in MCAT (July 2009) was 23 N (PS 7, V 5, BS 11). This was absolutely depressing, since I was averaging around 28-30 on practice exams. I really got nervous during the exam (especially on PS part), but thought I did at least 8 on verbal (I was so wrong&#8230😉. I improved my BS which was expected since I studied hard for it. I think the PS can be better; I just could not delver what I knew because of my panic. I prepared for the exam but I was also working full-time at this point, so my concentration weren't the best.

Anyway I am very disappointed with my scores…and little bit lost right now. I would like to apply DO schools only since it interests me very much and I also don't have much shot in MD with these scores.
I have four years of research experience while completing my undergrad and have published 5 papers in journal (as second author).
In addition, my clinical experiences are pretty okay; currently I am working full-time in the hospital as patient care tech doing all the basic medical stuff like EKG, phlebotomy, catheterization, determine vital signs etc. And I work with many physicians, nurses, and therapists.
I have shadowed about 4 physicians including one D.O. which I can get good letter. I might be able to follow another D.O. in my unit where I work.
My volunteer works include:
Children' hospital volunteer (post anesthetics care unit)- more than year and half
Volunteer in orphan center in developing country- for a month while I was vacationing in my home country.
Non-profit health care organization- about 8 months and still continuing.
Reading intervention tutoring (2nd grade students)- about 8 months and continuing.
Buddhist organization volunteer- more than 6 years (and also leader of youth group there).
Campus organizations volunteer- AED, AMSA, phi sigma, phi kappa phi, Asian american organization etc.
Basically I am doing okay with everything except MCAT verbal. And I am hoping that the DO admission will consider my language-barrier and take a look at my GPA and EC's. I am 25 year old, non-traditional student. I worked so hard to get here and willing to study hard.
So do you think I have a chance to get in DO school? Should I go ahead apply now? I really don't want to waste another year. I want to take my chance this year and would like to apply 16 DO schools. I reserved September MCAT, but not sure if I want to take it or not since my preparation is not so great.
Please share your opinion with me. And thank you for your patience with my long writing.

Oka - I'd say you're in good shape. You'll have to explain why your MCAT went down but your GPA/26 is par for the course or slightly above!

Recently I took the MCAT in May and ended up with a 22... So I decided to take it again and just received my scores with a 30. I have a 3.35 GPA with a lot of e.c's ( chem tutor, research intern, lifeguard, ER volunteer, working in clinics in Mexico, Dominican Republic, and Haiti..etc). I was wondering if it was too late in the game to apply now and is it even worth it or should I wait until next year?

Is there another spreadsheet to see the tiers that divide up where to apply based on your statistics similar to the MD thread that LizzyM did?

Btw, of the schools for DOs, which are the most difficult secondaries to fill out, and why?

Please be as specific as possible ;]

I don't know what to do and i feel like giving up. I have a 3.3 GPA overall and I took the mcats twice already, and each time I keep getting 18. I took a kaplan course but it doesn't seem to help. When I take the tests, I feel like I know my stuff but I guess I don't know well enough since I'm not improving. Any advice? Should I take practice exams more?
Also, I have a lot of shadowing experiences, and a lot of volunteering hours. I also have a third author on a chest pain paper that was published last may.
Do I still have a good chance at DO schools? Should I apply to Caribbean schools?
I plan to retake my Mcats on aug 25, 09 but i feel the same as when i took it previous times. Should I put it off until january and take a princeton review class? Or just study for this two weeks and take it? If so, what would be the most effective way?

I know I'm asking a lot but I'm really down and don't know what to do. Please help me, I would really appreciate it. Please and thank you.

I had a rough time with the MCAT as well. I first scored a 21 (07/06/08) and then retook it a year later and scored a 25 (08/09/08). I HOPE I never have to take it again, but will start preparing for the January MCAT soon....just in case.

Anyway, to your questions, I would suggest you do not take it until you have taken several practice exams were you are consistently scoring in the range of 26-29. Thats the average MCAT score for a DO matriculant, I believe.

Kaplan course sucks, I took it for my first test. Examcrackers is the best in my opinion. It really helps with every part of the MCAT. Dont rush the MCAT, with two scores of 18, you cant afford to get anything near that score again. DO NOT take this August MCAT if you feel you are going to score the same as before, wait and prepare for it, knock it out as 3rd time is a charm knowing you did all you could.

I wish you the best of luck, I know how tough and demoralizing that test can be. FYI, and 18 will not cut it for DO school, everything is on the climb.

An 18 will be really tough to gain an acceptance, especially with each applying class getting more competitive.

Change your approach and do not retake until you're getting high twenties on practice exams.

Shoot for a 26+ to be competitive.

It is not too late but you need to get your application to AACOMAS now. Not applying is an automoatic no. You have nothing to loose but a few bucks and some time. Go for it.

It is definitely not too late. You'll be a VERY good candidate, as long as you do as lawyerdoc2b suggests and get your application in ASAP. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

thank you for your advices. no english isn't my first language but i did go to high school and college here. I've always thought that was part of my problem for verbal so I'm trying harder to stay focus for verbal passages.

Now that I've taken the MCAT I figured I'd see what people think my chances are (I'm sending my apps in this week).

GPA: 3.25
sGPA: 2.92
aoGPA:3.55
MCAT: 29R (12VR, 9BS, 8PS)

200+ hours clinical volunteering
10 DO shadowing hours
Chem research (1 year)
Strong upward trend

ok here it goes:

3.53 cGPA
3.68 sGPA

mcat Ps 9 Vr 13 Bs 11 = 33R

will be applying urm, considering more men of my age and race are in prison than college..

what do you think my chances are for western, NSU, pcom, ccom, umdnj, lecom-b, and vcom? will be apllying to nearly all but am most curious on those.

You'd be a good candidate for Allo-schools, so I definitely think Osteopath should be no problem.👍

I think you have a chance. However, if I were in your shoes, I would add more schools than you currently have listed on mdapps. Applying as broadly as possible will make it that much more likely that you'll get in.
