I'm really not trolling, I'm just completely new to the DO thing. So I took my MCAT and got a 30S (low Verbal = 7). My GPA is 3.55, sGPA 3.28. I have a crap load of leadership and ECs. I have also have awesome LORs. The reason why I'm applying to the DO schools (I just submitted ~3 days ago) is that I also applied late to MD schools and I feel that I don't have a great chance of getting in. I just want to be a doctor in the end and I know DO can afford me those opportunities. Once again, I'm new, so do I have a good chance at DO?

You're going to need to learn more about the osteopathic profession. Right now, your "why DO" answer is garbage. Once you learn about what a DO is, then you will have a much better survival rate at interviews. DO is not a back up option for all of us.

However, your numbers are good, and it sounds like you're not worried about the rest of your application, so go shadow a DO, ask some questions, and best of luck.

Agreed. OP, there are only about 28 DO schools in the country, and you basically negated most of them. Apply broadly and be picky when you have a list of acceptances.

You also have another option. I applied to 11 DO schools and didn't bother sending in secondaries for a few of them because I received a bunch of interview invites relatively quickly after submitting my secondaries. I figured that I have a pretty good chance at getting into at least one of those schools. Some people may disagree with my approach, but everybody's situation is different.

I have a 3.84 and a 25Q and Im only applying to 8 DO schools. I hope thatll cut it cause I dont have money to apply for more haha. 😀

You have a shot at getting an interview. But its not going to be a great one, just in all honesty. That 5 in VR kinda hurts you, but you already know that. The rest of your application is good enough to get you into medical school somewhere. Im not sure I would say you need to consider other career options, but if you dont get in this time you NEED to hammer home your verbal reasoning, cause that is the lone thing holding you back from an acceptance in my opinion. I'm a senior biology major.

According to AACOMAS, I have a 3.41 sGPA and 3.48 cGPA.

MCAT is BS 12, PS 11, VR 08, WS S. I sent in for a rescore of the multiple choice, in case there was a mistake on my VR, since I did really well on most VR practice sections.

I have very few ECs at the moment. I'm licensed EMT-B with the 10 clinical hours that requires. This semester, I'm starting running with a local rescue squad 36 hrs/mo, trying to get in shadowing at MCV's ED 8-12 hrs/mo including with a DO who knows I'll be trying to get a LoR, and will be doing volunteer work with a local park for a service learning class, 20hrs+ by the end of the semester. I've also held a steady job of 15-20hrs/wk for going on two years now.

I know it's already late in the cycle, and I won't be submitting my primary application until later, late November at the earliest, so I have a chance to get better amounts of clinical exposure. The clinical exposure I do have, for my EMT-B and as a patient (and I have way too much experience as a patient recently), has convinced me that medicine is the route for me, to head that question off, but I know that most schools want to see a much larger history of it than I have. As far as why I hadn't been getting it already, I hadn't made that decision until fairly recently.

I know my stats are slightly above average for most COMs, but I'm worried about the state of my ECs. So, should I bother applying this cycle? Do I have even a ghost of a chance? Or need I wait at least a year?

Just my opinion but adding a few more volunteer hours doesn't justify the trade-off in delaying your application. It is a general truth that 1/3 of the applicants have their application in by now and are complete or nearly so. Two-thirds of the seats will be filled by December. Then, AACOMAS gets a flood of applications from later applicants who may have applied only to M.D. schools. A large number won't get accepted, they then turn to D.O. schools. That means late applicants comprise 2/3 of the applicants competing for 1/3 of the D.O. seats. You have competitive stats. Don't wait - get your applications in now.

Alright for one perk up. You have a very good GPA. You seem to have good EC's too. If you don't get in this cycle, mainly would be due to your MCAT or timing of application, just re-do the MCAT. You should in NO WAY be getting so down on yourself. It takes many many many people more than one shot to get into medical school. So just relax. Have a beer. And enjoy the ride.

I personally feel you still have a good shot of being accepted somewhere, as long as you applied to a lot of places and your apps are in or almost in. Remember, the average MCAT at a school is literally an average. There are people admitted every year with 23 MCATs and since your GPA and EC's are so good I wouldn't give up hope just yet! How many schools did you apply to and are your primaries all done? I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

It feels a bit good. I applied only to 4 MD schools.
I submitted my AAMOS my application on July 31st 2009 and my transcripts were received in June 2009. My application status stil shows there as Processing. I plan to apply to Atlanta and see what other places takes low MCAT.
I have very very good recommendations and the DO I shawoded with have written a great LOR. He was very much impressed with me and will discuss the treatment of patients with me. He is a family physician.

Well your gpa and mcat are both a little below the averages of the 2008 class at DMU. Which I think were a 27 and 3.6, but you should still have a decent shot at the school. Maybe think about retaking the mcat, but you can still get in with your stats.

Well as long as you improve your mcat a few points- you should have a great shot at getting into one of those schools. Even if you didn't get a higher score you still have a solid shot. I'd be more worried about if you are applying this cycle as Feb. is late. However, if you are doing it for next year's cycle then you should be golden.

I posted in the allo WAMC thread but didn't think to post here. As it is, I'm applying to 10 DO schools as well as 17 allo schools. There is a definite cut&paste + edit post job going on here.

AACOMAS puts my uGPA at 3.37 (sGPA right at 3.20ish) however my graduate GPA in a MS of Phsyiology program is a 3.6 (one effin' B because of a grant proposal 😡 but my last three semesters of undergrad were around 3.6 and my grad GPA is 3.6 as well. My MCAT is 34R (11-10-13).

Additionally, I have 6 years of clinical/hospital experience, as a security officer, an emergency department nurse tech and as phlebotomist. I've shadowed a developmental peds doc (2hr/week, 16 weeks) and a pathologist (worked with him for 2.5 years in the lab and shadowed for an 8hour day).
My undergrad GPA is a bit misleading. I had a 1.85 after my first semester freshman year, and just under a 3.0 after that year in engineering. I learned how to study and do well and started doing well from there. I'm gunning for University of Missouri Columbia on the allo side and KCUMB on the osteo side, but I'm applying all over the place. Currently I am doing research on atherosclerosis, working on an MS in physiology. So, what are my chances?

I just submitted AMCAS/AACOMAS this past week. Thankfully, I don't have to wait for a committee to interview me, as they will just be uploading my letters (they don't offer interviews to repeat applicants or grad students, of which, I am both.) I know 3/6 LoR are outstanding (drafted one and read the other two) and in 2007 application cycle my interviewers said the other 3 were awesome. Unfortunately, I did not ask any of the DO's I know for a letter. I lost touch with the one I thought would provide me with the strongest support after she finished her residency and the other offer for a letter I had I didn't feel would be as strong in my support.

If you take the MCAT at the end of Jan., then you are looking at getting your scores back at the beginning of Mar. I believe most deadlines for secondaries are in Mar or Apr. I would say that it would be late in the cycle and you would be better off applying the following cycle.

Im applying to MSU as we speak so I can keep you up to date as of how it goes. For you though you need to get that sGPA and cGPA up. More volunteer work would be very nice if you could get it. MSU loves lots of volunteer hours, something that I wish I had even more of. As long as you do both of those things I would say you have a pretty good chance.

That would put you easily into November before the primary is even verified. I think that's getting pretty late, but you may be alright if your stats are good. AACOMAS is getting a little frustrating.

100% you get into DO schools. 10 is enough. You have a very good chance and you applied broadly. If you apply more you might just waste your money since you going to get a bunch of secondaries. But if you have time to fill them all out go ahead, but as I said you good.

GPA-good, MCAT-great, your apps looks good to me.

MD? I am not sure, I am not applying to any of them, but if you want to know your chances get the MSAR book from AAMC. It tells you all the schools profile ~Aver. Mcat, Gpa, etc. Check where do you have a chance, nobody can give you more/better answer than that book.

I am thinking about applying next year to the DO program, but before I do, I want to know if I have a shot or if there is no way on ***. I graduated from a top UC school in CA with a bio major with a horrid gpa 2.8 in 2006. (I know its horrid, I partied waaay too much LOL). Since then, I have retaken all of my science pre-reqs and more, about 16 classes and received all A's. I used the AACOMAS GPA calculator that a fellow SDN put up and my cGPA is 3.45 and sGPA is 3.49.

Taking the MCAT is like having a second job, it totally consumes your time and effort not to mention your sanity. So, I don't really want to get myself into a hairy situation if it is pointless. Generally, I am a very good test taker, my SAT scores were way higher than normal for my college but my gpa wasn't on par with everyone else in hs.

I just took an anatomy class and loved every minute of it. I enjoyed studying bones, tissues and organs and thought maybe I should try to apply to DO schools. I'm a bit apprehensive because I feel very discouraged by my undergrad gpa, and think the admins will be like, "why on earth is she applying?" I've been lurking around here for the past month and everyone has a great gpa so it's a bit daunting.

I haven't done any EC's yet or studied for the MCAT because I don't want to invest time in something if I have no shot at it.

Your predicted AACOMAS GPAs are fine. Obviously you'll need to not bomb the MCAT. However, there is a lot more that goes into getting accepted beyond the numbers. You'll need EC's, shadowing, letters of rec, clinical time, volunteering, and a reason you want to go to med school. I'm sure you have some of this down already, but seeing as you don't have any EC's, you might want to start thinking about that. Good luck!

My ugpa is a 3.24 and same goes for my sgpa, but ive had a huge upward trend the past 2 years (past 3 semester gpa's: 3.6, 3.8, 3.8). I started with a 2.3 freshman year so I've been fighting to raise my gpa.

My EC's are pretty broad. Shadowed an MD for more than 100 hours, shadowed a DO for about 35 hours, active member of american red cross, founder and president of the Arab Student Organization at my university (Im Syrian, dunno if that is a URM), volunteering all over the place (nursing home, feed homeless downtown, for a doctors office), head of a middle eastern dancing team.

I have applied to: tourocom NY (my #1 choice), Nova, touro-CA, touro-NV, Western, CCOM, PCOM, MSUCOM, Lecom-Bradenton, NYCOM, and UMDNJ.

From what most people say, KCUMB invites most people they want to accept, but I'm not sure about the other two. With three interviews, I'd say you're likely to get accepted to one of those schools, so it really just depends on how much time and money you want to spend investing in other schools.

It's getting late and your chances are getting slim if you start the application process now, but you still have a chance of getting accepted. Here's a list of schools that don't require a DO LOR.

Your stats are pretty good, but it depends on how conservatively you want to play the game. I decided not to send some secondaries after getting a few interview invites. As long as you interview well, I think you will be OK.

I submitted my app to aacomas along with my MCAT and letters of rec around August 15. Haven't heard anything yet and it says "processing" on the aacomas website, haven't got any secondaries yet. What are my chances of matriculating at either CCOM or PCOM? My stats:

~3.81 sci and cumulative GPA
MCAT: 9, 9, 10, O
EC's: leadership in 2 students org's, choreographer for high school productions, hospital volunteering, campus group exercise classes instructor, CNA, and research for 3 years.
I have a letter of rec from a physician (also my research mentor) but he's an MD.

I think you still have a good chance. Most schools just started interviewing in September/late August. If you bumped up your MCAT by a couple of points, then you will definitely be competitive. Just get your secondaries out ASAP. People post the questions on the specific school's thread, so start answering them now and just send them out when you receive the secondary applications from the schools.

It is certainly not "very late"....you should be fine.
