* * 2010 - 2011 Application Season * * Post AACOMAS Questions Here !!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Okay, I had the same problem with released application showing up with several extracurricular activities missing and a month in the field for hours per week under jobs.

Sent an email and just got this reply:

The issue has been reported and should be corrected shortly. An updated application will be sent to the schools once the issue is resolved. Thank you

I guess we should all relax. 😀 Though I have to admit that so far, I am not very impressed with AACOMAS.

hey all!

I have a question about the awards sections. Would you list honor societies under awards or ECs? Also, what about deans list. I know under amcas you can list all of the years in one. With aacomas, you would need to list them all individually i think, which seems a little redundant to me, and not impressive enough to warrant 6-8 separate spaces.

What did everyone else do?

When asked how many hours do you work a week? I often respond with September lol... so good to see that this is a common issue.

Add another one to the list. My application is missing all my ECs but one.

I must admit that I sent them two emails tonight and they responded within minutes. They must have people working around the clock tonight. Still, they messed up my transcripts quite a bit. And they did not replace my Physics 2 grade from undergrad even though I repeated it and got a higher grade as a post-bac. 🙁 It is a long story but I checked with them and they said they won't replace it.

Well, hopefully, everything will be fixed soon and it will be smooth sailing for us all from now on.

I hope they can get this stuff fixed before it causes any delays. I am getting so worked up over this crap, it can't be good for me.

Bump this...I was gonna ask the same thing.

Also, for the EC section, is it necessary/suggested to list total hours completed? For some experiences, such as clubs/sports, I only have an estimate about total hours. And for other experiences, such as medical missions, is it necessary to even put either weekly or total hours? thanks!

Put Honor Societies under awards...once you are inducted, chances are you don't do much (unless you became an officer, then you can list it as an EC and award, I guess).

As for hours/week, just estimate if you don't have exact numbers. My records were thrown out from one of my hospitals when they moved to a computer based system, but I knew I did roughly 40-50 hours each summer for 4 summers. I split the difference and put 190. For medical missions, you can probably put 8-12 hours/day for however long you were there (just don't put 24/day). Again, estimate. As long as you can talk about the projects intelligently, they aren't going to question your hours.

My application was not even submitted yet, and my AACOMAS status is current:verified. Does that mean it's verified? Thanks.

i sent an email to them asking about it. i had 4 work exp and 1 ec too.

I had 7 work experiences, 1 leadership under EC and 1 honor and award... In reality I had over 20 of these things listed. Eeekkk! I hope they work this out!

I received a response to my email.
"This will be corrected before release to the colleges."

My application currently says released to all of the colleges. I wonder if they have been released or not.

Thanks!!! Any input on dean's list...would you include it at all?

THEY FIXED MINE! Sorry, I’m just so excited... But the date it was sent hasn’t changed, so I bet they fixed all of yours too! Yay!!! AACOMAS is on my good list again for doing that so quickly...

wooooo hooooo! they fixed mine too! so happy now!

Damnit, they still haven't listed my MCAT as received even though they received it a week ago and when I called on Friday they said they had it in hand!

Also what's up with them closing earlier than they should? They're supposed to be there til 4pm EST but whenever I call at like 12:10pm PST they're always closed. Argghhh.

i had the same problem and e-mailed support. they responded in a few minutes and said they would make the corrections and resend to the schools

If you did research, where do you put that? Under extracurricular? Or wait until the secondaries?

Just got verified, but now I do not see my GPA's listed anywhere. Am I just missing it?

I put it under EC's. I'm not sure if that's the "correct" thing to do, but I figured it couldn't hurt.

A few days after you're verified and after "submitted to AACOMAS" is listed on your front page, they will list your release dates to the schools. You can then click links next to the appropriate schools to see exactly what they are sent on your app with like 40 GPA calculations (Sci, Non-Sci, every year, bio, phy, chem, ochem, etc). You won't be able to see your GPA until then.

Mine is fixed too. They even added the new shadowing I just entered on Friday (I submitted on Tuesday) and removed the strange comma that mysteriously appeared in my PS in an inappropriate place.

Now I just wish we'd start hearing from the schools for secondaries.

I e-mailed them this morning and all of my things are already fixed.. very pleased with how quickly they do things there.

Does this mean they will resend the apps to schools?

Anyone know when secondaries are supposed to start coming??

New Question:

Where do I enter shadowing experiences? In the "Extracurricular, Volunteer, Community Service" section? Or do I not enter it at all (is it assumed through my rec. letters)?

Thanks all! 👍

Most schools likely won't start sending secondaries until Late June/Early July I'd assume. They would probably not want to have too much overlap between this year's incoming class and next years class. Many will still be accepting off of the waitlists into June. Supposedly some won't even start reviewing secondaries until beginning of August when classes start and last year's class is settled.

Enter one activity of Shadowing in the EC section. List all shadowing experiences with hours and dr's names and specialties if you have variety. List the total hours in the appropriate box.

I have a question:

Do schools need the required LOR's (1 DO + 2 professor LOR's) before sending us secondaries?

No, the letters will be requested when you get your secondary and I'd actually advise against sending them sooner. Some people have reported problems with schools losing their letters when they sent them before their secondary.

Finally submitted the damn thing! 15 schools total. Now I get a little breathing room until secondaries, which I'm expecting to be crazy.

I forgot to add spaces to indent my paragraphs with the extra characters I had on the personal statement but oh well.

I didn't indent. I just spaced the essay by pressing enter twice. I don't think they really care. Then again I only had like 3 extra characters so it wouldn't have helped much to try to indent for me.

I'd suggest starting on your secondaries now though personally. I know I've already started mine. I'd rather have the wait after I submit the secondary waiting for an interview than have to freak out trying to get secondaries in quickly once they do start coming.

In another thread (I think in pre-allo) with tips for writing the PS, it said not to indent your paragraphs - just hit enter again so there is a blank line, so I think you are good. 🙂

It also had other tips to save characters, such as only hit space 1X after periods because no one would notice. I'm glad I read it before I wrote my PS.

Haha cool, I was afraid I'd be one of the few that didn't indent.

Did you just find the prompts on the school websites?

[EDIT]^^Cool, I feel a bit better now.

People space more than once after periods? I did not know this lol

PM me your school list. I'll send you the ones I've already compiled into a word doc since I'm sure there are some overlapping schools between us lol

Other than that, look in last year's threads or in ChocolateBear's signature. I think he has a link that lists past year's prompts. Its helpful as most of the time they don't change much. Just be careful after you write them and make sure the prompt is the same, you don't want to send a response to an old prompt by accident and I know at least one changed slightly last year

To anyone curious, I just emailed AACOMAS and they said they were currently looking at 2-3 weeks to verify an application after it has been submitted.

That might be true now that more people are submitting. Many of us that filled out our app & sent in all our transcripts/mcat were verified in May even before we could submit & pay.

They also might just be saying that so people won't keep emailing them if they don't get it done quicker.

Oh true. Thanks.

My last transcript arrived (according to their system) on 6/4 and I was verified today, 6/7. I am quite impressed, especially since the two days in between were a weekend.

Hello

I have a question regarding the AACOMAS Grade. I did read the detailed instructions about entering coursework; however, I am still a bit confused. From the AACOMAS instructions, it says

"If your institution uses this grading scale, choose the appropriate grade from the Letter Grade Format. If the "+" grade has a value of "0.5" at your institution, you need to reflect the "0.5" numeric value for "+" grades only in the AACOMAS Grade column. Enter the numeric grade for plus grades (e.g. 3.5, 2.5, or 1.5). Enter letter grades for all other grades."

My question is, how do I know if the + grade has a value of 0.5 at my school?
Also, if I received an A+ in a class, should I just list the AACOMAS grade as an A, or do I need to just type in 0.5?

Please, if anyone could answer this, I would greatly appreciate it.

Look at your unofficial transcript. Are A- and B+ each worth 3.5 or are they listed as 3.7 and 3.3? No one is going to be able to tell you if your school has a policy of 0.5 for +/- without knowing your school. You're going to have to figure that out yourself.

As for entering them. A+ will be converted to an A, don't worry about adding anything. What its saying for the rest is to enter A, B, Cs as letter grades. When you are entering +/- instead of entering a letter grade enter 3.5 for A-/B+, 2.5 for B-/C+, etc. Just how I'm taking it at least, best would be to contact them and make sure that is correct. Then again, if your school uses the standard .3/.7 +/- system just enter them as A-, B+, etc.

Gah, I'm kicking myself for not including my IM championships in my awards.

Can anyone convince me its not a big deal? Or does anyone know if I can ask them to add it in after submitting?
