I have an outline for my essay, but I have a couple of questions about the school so I don't write something that is wrong:

The Independent Study Program (5 year MD program w/ research):

I assume you need to be accepted into this program with your application, and it isn't something you apply to after you are accepted into the MD program.

Also, for these school specific essays, is it wrong to mention characteristics of the school that are common to most schools. For instance, does it detract from my essay if I mention that I want to be a part of the orthopedic student interest group so I can share my passion and interests with other students and possibly parlay this into extra clinical or research experience....

submitted 7/24. they said to give it ten business days for receiving a complete email...it's been 9 business days and still nothing. how long did others have to wait before receiving their complete email? wondering whether to call them tomorrow

I was complete in about 4 business days. I turned it in within 3 days that you turned it in. But I have everything ready for them (not sure of your situation) i.e. my MCAT scores received, LORs all in,etc.

goodluck bro (or if a girl, sis haha 🙂) 👍

I never got an email from them...I'd check your status on their website. It'll say "complete date" or something like that.

ALso, has anyone else gotten an interview invite since that wave one week ago?

that was on a thursday afternoon, so i'm hoping a similar wave happens this afternoon!

Where does one find reliable information on student satisfaction rates with their med school? I think this is probably a much more important factor to consider when selecting a medical school than is often recognized.

Some schools's prehealth office will compile feedback from current students. I know mine does. A Harvard friend says they also have it. I think it's the best resource possible, because you would be coming from the same UG university and would probably have a similar experience.

You should check to see if your school has something like that.

FYI (taken from the GU SoM Guide to Application Page 11)

Due to the volume of applications, we are unable to notify applicants of missing credentials. If you believe that more than three weeks have passed since credentials were 2011
submitted to complete your application, and you have not received notification from us, you are encouraged to email or call to inquire about the status of your application.

Only completed applications are forwarded to the Committee on Admissions for review and interview consideration.

Applications will be reviewed ONLY once.

ok, i emailed admissions today because it had been 10 business days and i still hadn't received a "complete" email. they said:

"Your application is complete and has been forwarded to the Committee on Admissions. We have experienced some difficulties in publishing application status updates to the website and we thank you for your patience."

so if anyone else hasn't received a complete email and it's been a while, you might want to email them to check on your status.

I never received the "complete" e-mail but did log in to see that it was marked as complete a few days after I submitted it. (i.e. "Application Status: Completed on 7/22/2010 1:54:00 PM")

Should I be concern?

I was pretty crazy about Georgetown at first when I learned about their international program, but my excitement piped down a little when I read evaluations from current students.

Not majorly disappointed by a lack of invite yet, but my numbers are pretty similar to some of the people that have gotten invites... so now I'm worried about my overall candidacy.

So I guess all this negativity I have been hearing from various sources my have a reason to it. After contacting a student who had posted negative comments about Georgetown on here, he sent me an official AAMC link which indicates Georgetown may indeed have the highest drop-out rate in the country 😱

Seriously, what do you guys think about this? Can any other current students comment on this?

]i think the discontent stems mainly from the uber competitive atmosphere associated with its grading system. Everything is graded on a curve, so students are cutthroat!

I've never been on campus, so does anyone know if this would be a bad place to attend as an LGBT person?

What I've heard about the undergraduate atmosphere isn't promising. And I haven't found an LGBT student organization listed on the medical school website yet...

Hey guys, quick question: when I preview my app in pdf, there is a line at the bottom of the first page for my signature and date. I filled in my name in that little box when prompted in the actual application, but the line is blank in the pdf. Anyone else have that problem? Does the "signature" maybe appear after I hit "confirm?" Thanks!

DC is a very LGBT friendly area. Probably one of the most friendly in the country. As far as the campus and Georgetown specifically I can't comment on but I know the surrounding area is not a bad place to be for LGBT people.

Yes, once you are 100% submitted if you go back and preview/print your application you signature will appear. I ran into the same puzzle and it all worked out in the end.

Interview 🙂 Sept 9th

3.82/29R (I'm a double major, currently non-degree grad. I feel this is getting me the push to interview)

I also got an interview at GW on the 10th... Gonna be hectic in DC!

shamefame, when were you complete?

Interview invite!

I was complete on 8/6, but I sent an "in the area update" email on Monday because I have an interview at GWU on Sept. 23rd. Not sure if that had any effect or was just coincidence. So, if you are thinking of doing it, at least you won't be rejected right away!

Interview on September 24th.

Umm.... on my status page, by application status, it says "Application Completed on 8/10/2010 10:10:00 AM"

My application was submitted and completed on July 22nd. Does this mean I'm rejected if my application is complete and no interview invite? 🙁
Or do they send you an email?

Was it submitted and "marked complete" on 22 of July, or only "submitted" on the 22nd?

If you submitted on the 22nd, it's possibly that you weren't marked complete until two days ago. If that's the case, don't sweat it...PS: Don't sweat about anything until you get a final rejection letter. 🙂

I'm pretty anal with checking almost every day and it was marked as complete since July 22nd. Now it's complete again on 8/10? Hmmm, well at least I know they've looked at my application. Now I guess I sit here and wait for something in my inbox.

this is torture. I'm hitting the gym. I've put on some secondary belly anxiety that I need to lose before I see my parents. My mom likes to tickle my muffin top

I was invited to interview this morning. But (and this may pertain to no one else) I submitted the secondary on 7/9 and was never marked complete. On 8/6 I shot them an e-mail just asking if there was anything else I needed to do to be considered for admission. They responded the same day saying they were sorry, things are slow, but that my application was complete. Interview invite 6 days after that.

Interview Invite! 32S, 3.88 GPA interviewing the 15th of September! 😀

I was complete on 7/23--so far nobody seems to have gotten an invite past 7/22 completion. Am I wrong?

congrats goldngrl!

I logged in to check right after I read your post... just because I was also marked complete on 07/22.

I was expecting it to say complete 08/10, but it stills says "Completed on 7/22/2010 1:54:00 PM". I'm reminded that I've been slapped in the face and told "Yeah... you won't be getting an interview anytime soon, buddy."

Is GU one of those schools that do silent rejections? Or do they wait until their class are filled and then send massive rejects to everyone else? Just want to anticipate whether I will ever hear from GU again. LOL.

I think you are right. I was also complete on the 23rd and have been looking for someone with an invite and complete on or past that date but haven't noticed one. I guess we are next in line.

Me too! I'm thinking of Sept. 24th for my interview. It'll be interesting to compare our assessments to those of past visitors. Good luck to everyone else!

Yep, I was complete on 7/23 and still waiting for an invite. Hopefully next Thursday?!

actually the last wave of interview invites was two thursdays ago. do you think they only review every two weeks? that's not possible, considering how many apps they get.

Nice! I got an invite too, interviewing the 16th of September.

ps: goldngrl, I'm glad that Georgetown is showing us USC girls some love 🙂

I'm going to be le sad if I don't get an interview invite...I was complete on the 22nd... i put work into my GU essay! 🙁

I actually was complete on 8/6 and got an interview invite on Thursday too (on 8/12).

I sent an "in the area update" email to the school on Monday because I am interviewing at GWU on Sept. 23rd. I did not know if that would have any effect at all but my premed advisor told me it could not hurt if I sent one. It looks like it actually did have an effect.

I'm interviewing now on Sept. 24th at Gtown.

Can you post what kind of wording you used for the "in the area update"? I'm thinking of sending one but I don't know what tone it should have. Thanks.

"I am from Colorado, and I have already received and accepted an interview invitation from another school in the area on September 23rd. I have been told that it is alright to contact other schools in the area to let them know in case interviews can be accommodated during the same trip as a way to alleviate costs and reduce the amount of time taken off from employment.

I understand that it is still early in the application cycle and that I have only been complete a few days. I also understand that it sounds a bit presumptuous to not only assume an interview but to also request one on a certain date. I assure you that it is not my intention to come off demanding. If I am even granted an interview at your school, I would gladly make another trip out to Washington D.C. because Georgetown is one of my top choices. My only intention is to let you know I will be in the area in case it is possible for me to be accommodated when I am already in the city.

Thank you for any consideration. I know this is a very busy time of the application season, and I completely understand if you cannot provide me any additional information on this matter."

Overall, I was just very polite, almost ridiculously so. When I posted a question about submitting this type of letter on SDN, I got a variety of responses about how I would sound demanding and bossy, so I tried to word it to avoid that. However, when I asked my premed advisor whether I should send a letter at all, she was pretty quick to reply that it wouldn't bother the school much, and the worst thing that could happen is that they would say I could not be accommodated. She seemed confident that it wouldn't be portrayed negatively. And it would only result in an immediate rejection if I wasn't going to get an interview anyway. So, I think it is worth doing. As long as you word it carefully and politely, I think that it can be done. In my case, it seemed to have actually been successful.

Though, I hereby claim that my advice is for entertainment purposes only. I cannot be held responsible for any subsequent rejections resulting from said advice. 🙂

hey does anyone know what the University ID numbers mean? There is a section on it in the secondary. Is that only for Georgetown students/undergrads?

I'm going to be le sad if I don't get an interview invite...I was complete on the 22nd... i put work into my GU essay! 🙁

Same boat here. There has yet to be any confirmation that I don't have a red flag on my app. I know many will tell me it's still too early to worry but hey, isn't that what pre-meds are best at? (Not entirely seriously about my previous statement... please don't send any PM's about what a chill pre-med you are).

🙁. Still waiting for a reason to be hopeful.
