I'm so upset. Just found out I was placed on the alternate list AGAIN! Was places on the alternate list last year too. I really thought I was going to get accepted this time because my interview went great. Plus I thought they would show me some love since I am an alumni. I applied & interviewed really early. My application didn't change so I thought they wouldn't interview me again if they didn't want me. I guess I was wrong. Howard is my first choice. I'm so crushed right now. The alternate list isn't ranked & I don't know how many people get accepted from the alternate list each year. I pray that they accept me. This is so frustrating.

I know how you feel, being a alternate it for HUCM is not a great feeling, but u didnt get rejected so you still have a chance. Nothing on your app changed? you should send them a loi and send update email to miss walk every couple of weeks.

Please take this as constructive and not criticism but like you said "nothing changed" so I think that sending a LOI would be useful but you should add something to make you stand out from before. How have you grown as an applicant? What can you bring specifically to the institution? Why did you decide to try again at the same school? Just some questions to think about.

My interview went horrible the first time around so I thought that was the reason I was put on the alternate list. So I submitted the same application, interview went really well the second time. Thanks for the advice. I will definitely send a loi and contact ms walk.

OMG OMG OMG!!!! I finally got an interview invite today for 12/15!!! Im interviewing at GWU on 12/17 and I sent Howard a LOI/In the area around October 15th. I never heard back so I was sure I wouldn't get interviewed, then today out of no where I got the email! I almost deleted it on accident lol!!

Im sooo excited, HUCOM is my first choice. I'm absolutely in love with this school. My aunt went here and my best friend went here as well. Howard here I come!!!!😛

Yes I am applying to Howard I haven't actually sent off my application yet, but I plan on sending it off soon. Has anyone sent their application off?

Hey is a LOI important? I have not done that so far. Should I do that before I interview or after I interview?

Its all based on the applicant... If your application has been on hold for a couple of weeks, sending a LOI could help improve your chances of getting an interview....

mhmm, I don't know if I'm on hold or not. Have you written a letter of interest before?

If you haven't got an interview or you've interviewed and have been wait-listed a LOI could help you improve your odds. If you have already interviewed, but haven't received a decision yet, you would want to send an "status update" email or letter....

Hi 🙂 Are you talking about secondary application or primary application?
Good luck LuvGDMD2B!

Should I send the LOI before I interview? And should I send via email? Sorry one more question hence I have never even though about this which by the way is a great idea; Should I send one to other school that I have applied to as well?

yea, last cycle I wrote a LOI to Meharry. Got an interview invite a couple weeks later. Don't really know if the LOI helped, but it made me feel like I was doing something while i waited to hear back.

Its all up to you, but since you already have an interview you might want to wait and send an LOI after your interview.

Thanks Cmaster! 🙂
By the way, did you send the letter by mail or email? I would think sending by mail is more formal?

Serious7, Thank you!
cantgiveup, once I get this paperwork, yes! we will be classmates! :highfive:

DoctorDang, Thanks! Cmaster said some good things about an LOI. I'm pulling for you. :luck:

LuvGDMD2B Get your secondary in before you start worrying about an LOI. Do it now! Then give it time to be marked complete. THEN give it time to be reviewed. I'd say if you haven't heard anything within 2-3 weeks of being marked complete, then refer to Cmaster's post and send an LOI/update. keep in mind that there might be a bit of a slow down in the next few weeks since it's the holiday season. Good Luck!

For those that have sent LOIs to Howard and received a subsequent interview - did you send your LOI by email to Ms. Walk or by snail mail to the admissions office?

Thanks a million 🙂

Miss Dee Dee, should I send it by mail or email?

Email is much quicker and Ms. Walk actually checks her email pretty often. A mailed letter is always nice, but an email is more efficient. I would sent a email to Howard and written letters to other institutions. I emailed Ms. Walk last week and she back to me pretty quickly. She also has a lot of sway in who gets invited to an interview....

Actually, I emailed Ms.Walk last week letting her know how much I love Howard and the people I met on this thread. That email wasn't meant to be a LOI, I just sent it because I felt like I wanted to share it with her. Do you think it'll be too much if I send a LOI to her through email?

Happy Thanksgiving guys! I'm sad because my parents are away and I have no one to spend thanksgiving with. But I hope you guys are spending it with your families! 🙂 <3 Eat lots!

Thank you so much C-master!!! I really like I said last night never even considered an LOI before. Ok I will email Howard but like Morehouse, Meharry, Drexel and other schools etc.... a mailed LOI would probably be better right? Also were there any templates that you used or did you just state how you are interested in the school etc.....

Sorry one more question about the letter of intent should I send it as an attachment if I email it or within the body of the email?

Its up to you. If you are making it in a word document with a letter head then you should do it as an attachment. You could also put everything in the body.

It is all completely up to your preferences. Personally, I put all of my information in the body of the e-mail.

Thanks TexasBelle87 and I did you send an email to all schools or just Howard? It was mentioned to send it via mail to other schools and email to Howard but I am not sure soooo new to this. I really appreciate all of the advice.🙂

I'm not beerog2003 or BlackDr2b, but I can say for a fact that "Yes, they are very selective"... this is can be a really good thing because you don't waste money flying over there if they are not going to offer you an acceptance... so if you get an interview here, you have an almost 80% chance of being accepted... and if you are a woman your chance goes to ~97% (per the numbers below)... so if you are a lady and you got an interview here.... you are pretty much set on an acceptance unless you say something absolutely stupid at the interview (so you should be good).

As you can also see from the numbers, the chance of getting an interview is pretty woeful i.e. about 5.8%

The number also says, if you are not a minority, don't apply as your chances are even more woefuli.e. 2 out of 1553 (and only 1 of those eventually got accepted - therefore, you have about 0.06% chance of getting accepted if you are not a minority).

Fall 2008 Admissions Statistics
Total admissions data..................5635 applied, 328 interviewed, 261 were accepted, 114 enrolled
In-state admissions data.............19 applied, 5 interviewed, 5 were accepted, 5 enrolled
Out-of-state admissions data.......5616 applied, 323 interviewed, 256 were accepted, 109 enrolled
Women's admissions data............3179 applied, 145 interviewed, 140 were accepted, 65 enrolled
Minority admissions data..............4082 applied, 326 interviewed, 259 were accepted, 108 enrolled
International admissions data.......523 applied, 17 interviewed, 15 were accepted, 10 enrolled

Fall 2008 GPA and MCAT Scores
Average undergraduate GPA..................3.40
Oldest MCAT considered.......................2006
Average MCAT score............................25
Average biological MCAT score...............8.9
Average physical sciences MCAT score....8.0
Average verbal reasoning MCAT score......8.2

What do ya'll think about these stats? So I seriously have a 97% chance of acceptance post-interview?

From what I understand those numbers are accurate. But also take into consideration that maybe less than 97% are INITIALLY accepted without being waitlisted. Maybe 7% of that 97% were taken off the waitlist and didn't know they were accepted until late spring. Also, That number (97%) could fluctuate from year to year depending on how deep Howard goes into its waitlist.

Am I making sense?

Hello. My secondary for this school has been complete since august but no interview. Does this mean I am rejected? 🙁

Congrats to those accepted! I'm a 1st 1st year here love the school, and even more my classmates~! If you have any questions feel free to shoot me an email I would be more than willing to answer them as soon as I can. For those still waiting it's not over. Stay positive 🙂 Good luck!

Hey DoctorDang!

My email was titled LOI with name and AMCAS ID# for easy referencing. The email was roughly four paragraphs; contained a brief introduction of myself (credentials) but mostly about why i want to go to Howard.

Hope this helps!

How long did it take Ms. Walk to respond to your email?
