A couple of days (2-4).... But, I was waitlisted last year, and I sent her update emails for the better part of 6-months so she kinda knew who I was....

Haha 🙂 ok, thanks!

I think Ms.Walk gets a lot of emails, we should all wait patiently, I'm sure she'll reply back! 🙂

Hey DoctorDang!

My email was titled LOI with name and AMCAS ID# for easy referencing. The email was roughly four paragraphs; contained a brief introduction of myself (credentials) but mostly about why i want to go to Howard.

Hope this helps!

Hey were your paragraphs long or short? I feel like mine are kind of long should I heavily condense?

It is completely up to you. Personally, I think the ultimate goal is to be clear and succinct so that your reader understands they key point(s) in each paragraph without having to dig for it.. makes sense? Mine were 3-4 sentences cause I am a pretty straightforward person. Your personality should come through in some way in your letter. Good luck! 🙂

Hey, guys

I had a quick question regarding updates. Do you just send an e-mail to Ms. Walk letting her know what to add to your application or is there a formal way to update. To be more specific, I got a job as a research associate and I wanted to let the adcom know about it because they encourage including the latest info on your apps. Let me know! Thanks!

Thanks!!!!🙂

So, where are the best places to live in DC?

i've heard good things about columbia heights and the area right behind howard. most people i've talked to mentioned silver springs, which is in maryland but more affordable than living inside DC and you can take the train to school. i'm probably going to do this.

Hey, I currently live in DC and I just wanted to give you guys just a word of advice re: housing...Columbia Heights is nice but waaaay over priced (meaning you will end up paying around 1500 a month for a studio or a one bedroom apartment)...your best bet is to check out the HU Student Housing webpage for independent landlords who are willing to cut students (especially med students) a break on rent. Silver Spring is nice BUT seeing that you all might be on campus all hours of the night and the metro stops running at 12ish on weeknights that might also not be a good idea (unless you have a car then its all good). Check out craigslist for listings for apartments or shared housing in NW or NE DC.
I used to live in a Fairmont/Girard House that is literally across the street from Howard. Its a nice complex, fairly quiet and all utilities are included. PM me if you all need any more info on housing...

I live around DC as well and Columbia Heights, although very close to HU, is gonna be pricey. I'm sure there are other alternatives in DC because Silver Spring is going to be too far for you since you have to change trains to get to HU and it's not even that close. Try student housing options or other neighborhoods that are up and coming like around the Eastern Market metro stop or even Anacostia... Someone just mentioned Mount Pleasant to me but I'm not sure where that is so correct me if I'm wrong😕. Good luck finding something!

Hey Beeweew,
You and I seem to be on the same page. CoHi is outrageous when it comes to housing costs ( I live there now but I am in a rent control unit 😀 so I am paying a pittance for a pretty decent apartment..yay me). Mount Pleasant is adjoining the Adams Morgan area and again can get pricey but there are a numberof options available. Another alternative that some students may want to consider is a realtor. A friend of my mine just used a realtor and got a NICE one bedroom in the Petworth area (i.e. off Georgia Avenue) for $775 and her utilities are around $120 a month. I will ask her the name of the realtor and post on here when I get it (if thats allowed). I hate to see out of towners get robbed by these greedy property management companies so I try to warn people not to fall for their BS.
If at all possible tho, stay on the green line...the redline is a beast and when it shuts down it SHUTS DOWN. So you could end up *****ed out if you have to get on campus in a rush. Another alternative if you live in Silver Spring, you can take the 70 bus but be warned that bus is like a living episode of Tales from the Hood...so have your pepper spray and your headset ready lol...

All this to say there are some cheap options in DC you just have to start looking now...Oh yeah dont be scurred of Anacostia its getting pretty safe to live there...

Interview invite for Dec. 15; completed Dec. 6th.... gluck to everyone. I submitted my sec. really late so there is still hope out the for people that have yet to hear anything back.... email and call as often as you can

Congrats Cmaster! Good luck on both those DC interviews.
Thanks a million Beeweew (have you heard anything yet?) and OBEAHDOCTOR (how you gonna tell us that the 70 bus is like tales from hood then tell us not to be scurred of Anacostia? hahaha).

LOL...Let me just say every ride on the 70 bus is an adventure...just keep your guard up and dont look like you just got to DC and you'll be aight...Most people new to DC are afraid of Anacostia but with all the gentrification and 'redevlopment' its actually quite nice (some parts at least)...housing is affordable and its on the green line...dont be scurred of the area!! Im thinking of buying a house in Anacostia before I apply to med school (yeah I am speaking it into existenct HU Class of 2016). But for real tho if you are looking for something close to campus Miss Dee Dee hit me in the pm ill give you the number to a decent apartment complex...

Thank you Goober11 and Beeweew! 😀

Beeweew, I don't know if I have any tips, but one thing I did often was that I checked in with the Howard Office from time to time, and also with Ms. Walk. They are all very nice! Hope that helps!
By the way Beeweew, if you get an interview invite! I hope we interview the same day!!!! 🙂

Congrats DoctorDang!!

When I flew out, Virgin America had the cheapest direct flight. $240 round trip. Let me know if you have any questions about the interview.

I just looked up and Southwest offers $119 (not round trip) so for round trip that'll be about $238! Very close to your price so I think i'll take that 🙂
by the way cantgiveup, what can I do to prepare? I heard that you have to fill something out at the interview, how do I prepare for that?

I brought a copy of my amcas application and secondary to reference. The questions are not difficult. A little more in depth than the secondary. The whole experience is very exciting and not stressful at all. They do a great job of making you feel welcome.

Can someone please expand more on the questionaire/essay that we fill out on the morning of interviews? I just want to understand more about what we are required to do

Gracias!

Congratulations to everyone who got interviews/was accepted.

My question is thus: I was complete WAY back in 10/5, and I still haven't heard anything. Are LOIs an avenue I should explore (I REALLY like Howard. Like, A LOT), or should I just be patient and try to wait it out?

Did you call or send any updates before you got an interview?

I also got an email stating that there was a processing error and I had since been complete but no interview for me :-( yet.

The "supplementary application" is basically a different version of a secondary app. It's nothing you have to study for, just questions about your background and your intentions at Howard and beyond. They give you ~30 minutes to do it, but I felt like writing a thesis so I held on to mine and worked on it for a while. I had one of the last interviews so I had more time. They do ask your SAT, but I had to guesstimate because I literally took that thing almost 10 years ago.

Congratulations to everyone who got interviews/was accepted.

I would. It's been a while and you want to stay on their radar.

If you truly really like HUCM... you should let them know it; If I was you, I would send either LOI or update email or call them once a week just to let them know that I am seriously interested in attending their institution.

So, what exactly IS an LOI, or update e-mail? I keep hearing about them, but no one in my pre-health advising/pre-med group ever mentioned anything about them. Do they work? What's the protocol? How does one go about writing one?

Is it bad form just to write "Pleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease accept me?" over and over and over again?

(That was a joke, FYI...unless you really think that could work)

Crazed, there are some good answers to that question on page 8.

Hello guys! So it is confirmed that I'll be there on January 12th~
I'm thinking of flying out on January 10th ! ( yes I'm super excited 😀 )

Here are some of the key things that Ms. Walk mentioned:
They look at your entire application to see if everything fits. Your MCAT score, strong recent science grades, a great secondary (not messy), turning in early is better, and your interest in working with the underserved communities. Moreover, writing a paragraph via email to Ms. Walk does not give one an invitation invite.

Hope Ms. Walk doesn't mind that I share this! 🙂

Good luck guys! Especially Beeweew!
