2010-2011 Internship Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am sorry about the rejections... I wish I understood what exactly the sites are looking for in an applicant. I have several experiences, bmed, neuropsych, speak several languages, but have gotten 3 rejections (and expecting at least 3 more based on what I read here). Have 3 interviews, which I am really happy about, but would be nice to get at least 1-2 more.

When did UNC sent their rejection?

I received it yesterday Sunstroke. Not too surprised really.

Harvard seems to have taken over most of the internships in the Boston area, which means that their students probably get priority (since they already "know" how fabulous they are), and Harvard is insanely competitive anyway. I didn't even apply to most sites in Boston b/c of their affiliation w/ Harvard, even though that is where I'm from! 🙁

IsItOver, thank you for this insider tip. This is the kind of invaluable info I do not get from the brochures or from emails to the DCTs of internship sites. I'm assuming that the remainder of chances to interview is taken up by "Who do you know or who is your adviser" factors. When there are so many applications to sift through that seems like the best heuristic to be sure to get a decent candidate.

Yeah, I would not be too surprised about getting a rejection either. I just wish it were official already, so that I wouldn't hold out any (minimal) hope about it anymore ...

Someone told me some good "advice" today. They said that I should focus on all that I have accomplished in the past 3-4 years and really feel good about that.

Was that advice given by someone who has already matched in the past?😀

I'm sorry to hear that today hasn't been the best day of many of us. On a brighter note, I got 2 interviews today (North Florida/South Goergia VA & Baltimore VA).

I had read on this thread that the Baltimore VA had accepted people 12/02 and 12/03. They were supposed to notify people by 12/07. It's 12/10 and I got a yes today, so don't lose hope. I think many of the sites are overwhelmed by the large numbers and new electronic format.

Best of luck to all!

Congrats on the interviews! I am sure you were especially excited about the last interview.. so maybe staying positive does help!

So I've been avoiding SDN because I didn't want to feel disheartened by people who already received interviews at sites that I wanted. Apparently, I'm not the only one waiting to hear back from 10 + sites!!!

Here is my update:

Interviews @ New Jersey VA, Philhaven Hospital (PA), & Coler-Goldwater Hospital (NY)

Rejections from: Pace CC, James Madison CC, Johns Hopkins CC, Institute of Living, & Baltimore VA

Seems like total number of interview invites are down this year. I wonder what's going on.

Don't loose hope yet!!!! I only have 1 interview, but am waiting to hear from 11 placements, all on the East Coast. Of my peers at school, most people are still waiting to hear from 10 or 11 sites AND a girl last year, who placed, applied to 23 sites and got 8 rejections before ever getting any interview. she ended up with five interviews, so the remaining responses were 50/50. There are 5 days left and many places left to respond to people. THERE IS HOPE!:luck:

From my experience last year, anybody waiting for an interview at Wayne State will need to actually contact the site. Last year I got an interview there but didn't know it because they forgot to send out notifications to everybody. Anyway, just e-mail the training director (Dr Bell) and he will tell you. He is a very nice, but absent-minded, guy and won't hold it against you for contacting him.

Good luck

A lot of sites lost funding and had to cancel their internships. I actually just got a Match listserv e-mail today which included another site canceling its internship program. I def feel bad for the people who completed and paid for apps to sites that later removed themselves from Match.

Less internships means less positions, BUT, at least in the past, I have been told that nationally the number of people applying/year is usually fairly similar to the number of positions available. So, in theory, more people than not should place in any given year.

I don't know how true that is, but I am choosing to believe it 🙂

I've noticed a similar trend with the students in my program. Last year, they were getting between 9-13 interviews each (8 candidates), but this year 1-3. I wonder if it is a combination of sites taking longer to respond and a larger volume of applicationts. Would the interview invites go down?

Exactly!! Had 5 rejections until today where 2 interviews (and a subsequent rejection) came in... but I will take it!!

Interviews with Hutchings Psychiatric and Hudson Valley VAMC
Rejection from N.Florida/S.Georgia VAMC

Still waiting on 10 - mostly lower east coast VA's

Hold onto the hope :xf:

Does anybody know what a good number of invites to have is? I know it all varies, but I hear all kinds of things, like getting 11 is good, but I don't see myself getting more than six or seven at the most.

Any thoughts?

I think last year the average number of interviews for those who matched was 7; whereas the average number for those who didn't match was 4.

That's good to know. I am at 4 now and hoping to get a few more yes responses...so stressful...

I remember hearing just anecdotally that in past years most people applied to about 15 sites and averaged about 7 interviews, and if they were really lucky they got 9-10 interviews. However it sounds like many of us are much below that which is disheartening! Maybe there will be good news within the next few days?
I'm trying not to catastrophize but now I'm already worrying about not matching this year and about how next year could be even worse! 😱
Whew, need to remember to not panic and that good things can still happen.

Wow, 9-10 interviews. I think I can be assured that isn't going to happen! Unless I get some very surprising news from the rest of my sites. I am also worrying about not matching...thinking about my options... so difficult! Hang in there. I do know someone who interviewed at 3 sites and matched, so we might all get good news in the long run.

Interview at Allegheny General - rejections from Patton State Hospital (that was a shocker), and U of AZ

I also know someone who interviewed at 2 sites and matched. Another person interviewed at 4 and also matched...

I agree to holding onto hope as disheartening as the situation seems right now for a lot of us with low interview numbers. I know people who got the 9 interviews and didn't match last year so quantity isn't everything!
Just think, all you need is one site!!!

Wooo you guys are actually making me feel semi- pumped up about my 3 interviews! High fives all around! :highfive:
At least all this waiting will be over in a few days!

This sucks so bad....rejection from Creedmore today. So far 4 rejections and no interviews. Waiting patiently on 6 more sites all in NYC.

Same here! Rejection from Creedomore, but I sort of expected it since someone posted they sent out their interview offer 3 weeks ago...

I really hope that I'm one of the people that gets rejections before the interviews.... I have 10 more sites that I'm waiting to hear back from. Anyone know how many sites they didn't hear any reply at all from last year? I got 2 rejections today, that's six in total. I have yet to receive an interview so it's pretty difficult to keep a positive mindset.....🙁

I forgot to add that I actually know a person that only got one interview last year and she matched!!!! That's pretty uplifting😳

Last year I had 10 rejections before I got any interviews and ended up with 4 interviews - now I'm not the best story because I didn't match, but there's still hope to at least get interviews.

I had one site last year that I didn't hear from at all and I contacted them on Dec 17 and was offered an interview.

Interview from Children's Hospital Los Angeles...anyone heard from Oregon Health and Sciences?

Rejections from Wichita Collaborative Psychology Internship Program and Community Reach Center. Plus, Eastern Virginia Medical School lost funding for its rotation at Eastern State Hospital which I was applying for. Urgh!

I wanted to thank everyone for their feedback and encouragement... Hopefully a lot of sites will send out responses tomorrow.

Has anyone heard of Napa Valley, Hudson River or Cornerstone? Thanks :xf:

I know I'm late jumping on this band wagon, but FYI, from my school (as I understand it) people felt getting 5 interviews last year was GOOD. My school probably had about 50 people apply last year, and I believe most placed even though that number is WAY below the 10+ other people were saying they had heard.

Take home message: I went into this only expecting 3-5 interviews and still expecting to place. You only need ONE site to like you 🙂

My understanding is that you can expect to hear something from all sites but, as has been mentioned a couple times, some sites seem to over-look their notifications. Those seem to be the exception though, not the norm.

Also waiting for Hudson River. NYC sites seem to be slow for some reason...

Good luck! Let us know when you hear something!:luck:

Rejection from Virginia Commonwealth University came yesterday.

I got this from last years internship thread:

I think there should be a new DSM-IV diagnosis: Pre-Interview Notification Stress Disorder (PINSD).
Criteria:
A) Is is in the process or just before the process of receiving interview invitations for a desired position. May include internship, graduate school, faculty or post-doctoral positions.
B) Experiences three (3) or more of the following:
1) rapid heart palpitations, hyperventilation, or other anxiety-related symptoms experienced when email inbox includes one or more new messages.
2) Devastation and anger upon realization that new emails from research assistants, advisor, family, friends, businesses, or other non-interview related sources.
3) Daze-like psychological state and/or psychosomatic symptoms such as nausea or headaches.
4) Hatred of weekends or holidays, due to belief that interviews will not be dispensed at these times.
5) Excessive procrastination (e.g., internet, TV, even cleaning) in order to distract from email for only a moment.
6) Neglect of health, relationships, schoolwork, and social life as a result of excessive email checking.
7) Carpel tunnel syndrome or other repetitive motion disorder from excessive inbox checking.
8) Doing stupid things like writing criteria for a fake disorder for an anonymous internet forum rather than working on dissertation.
Symptoms must be present for at least one week and must cause marked impairment or distress.[/I]

Thought it would make some of us laugh....... I am sending everyone positive vibes and hoping we get some good news :xf:

Has anyone heard from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia? I am waiting on them to make plane reservations!

Wishing everyone good luck today and monday...I am so glad this part is almost over - I think my compulsive email checking is starting to annoy my friends and it is killing my phone battery!

I love it, these are all so true. I can't focus for 2 seconds on anything, my mind just jumps from place to place.

Sending out good wishes to everyone today, hope we all get some good news.

Rejection from University of South Florida Counseling Center.

I'm going to go ahead and dub this day "Bloody Friday".

Rejection from UVA CC & Columbia

I think more to come...

Interview at MUSC this morning via email

Congrats!!!

I didn't personally apply to MUSC--but that gives me hope in general about the sites I haven't heard from yet, because someone from my program is going on their interview at MUSC this coming week. So, clearly some sites are not giving all their good news at once!!! (Trying to stay hopeful....:luck:)

Just wanted to let everyone know that Southeast Louisiana VA is sending out interviews!😀

Maybe today will be better than yesterday...

Rejections from Univ of VA CC, University of South FL CC and Hampton VA.

Rejections = 5. Interviews = 0

<insert giant expletive here>

I've had 9 rejections and no interviews, so i am definitely not feeling optimistic...

Thanks for this! It's hilarious and scary how true it is. I can't even procrastinate well - I can't follow a 30 min TV show w/o rewinding 20 times b/c I'm in my e-mail (or on this forum)!

Rejection from Miami VA this morning (expected 😎). Keep 'em coming!

It also depends on the types of programs you are considering. Some programs interview 70+ people, while other interview <15. The "type" of program also can impact the number of invites. For instance, there are a handful of very research heavy sites that get a ton of applications, so walking away with anything more than 2-3 from that group is impressive.

I can't remember exactly how many sites I applied to, but it was around 19. I ended up with 9 interviews for 10 or 11 placements. I was at the higher-end for the total number, but I also had a more diversafied list than some people who only considered the very top sites.

I believe the average number of interviews for matching last year was 7. Keep in mind that with the systemic changes may impact the overall numbers, so be cautious when trying to infer competitiveness and likelihood of matching.

Ugh 2 more rejections - Phoenix VA and Jesse Brown VA.

Thought I'd come out of lurking as well. I've received 3 rejections, and am waiting on 16 sites. I really don't know what to make of it. I had always had the thought "What if I don't match?" But never really had the thought "What if I don't even interview??" That thought is creeping in my mind right now and I'm terrified🙁
