2010-2011 Internship Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks--what track was it for?--This process is anxiety provoking, especially when trying to schedule interviews for offers you've already received and not knowing whether or not you should "hold" dates for places that you haven't heard from. I ended up doing that for another one, and now I'm trying to figure out how to attend both interviews.

Has anyone heard from the Palo Alto VA, the Long Beach VA, Houston VA, or Pacific Islands VA?

I'm still waiting on the Palo Alto and the Pacific islands VA... I went back and looked at last year's thread (informative, if a bit obsessive) and one person received a rejection from Palo Alto on the 14th.

I got a rejection from the Denver VA today. Still waiting on UCSD, Western Psych, and UW, although I am not optimistic about the first two (other applicants in my program received interviews from them last week Friday and this past Monday, respectively).

Good luck, everyone, especially to those of you who are applying for a second time around. Amazing applicants from my program don't match every year, so that helps me take this process less personally, although I am still rejection sensitive! 😳

If you are asking about UNC - the interview offer was for the Beh Med track. Those that have not received interviews, but not rejections, applied to the child tracks and eating disorder track. Yes it is very anxiety provoking when one of your top sites hasn't let you know, either way, and you are "holding" dates but don't want programs who have given you an interview to think you are not interested. Dec 15th can't get here any quicker...

Well--at least we're in the same boat. I'm waiting to hear about the ED track at UNC too. Maybe they're behind??

I really hope that they are behind, but since I read that they have already started contacting candidates, part of me feels that UNC is now finalizing their interview schedule and will probably start sending out rejections soon...

that is how i am feeling as well...

Just received rejection emails from Friends hospital and southern Mississippi. So far I have no interviews and 4 rejections. Even if I don't match this year, I would still like to receive at least one interview for the experience. I have a lot of work and practicum experience, and feel that my clinical background I'd pretty strong so this is a confusing process... I have 2 questions:First one is if sites have offered interviews to some why don't they also send out rejections also? Second one is out of all the people receiving interviews, how many have either defended or completed their dissertation? Your feedback will be really appreciated!

Hello PsydMHC, I am pulling for you to get an interview this year. Is this your first year in this process?

I don't know the answer to your first question. The way internship is handled sites are not obligated to tell us squat. If you never receive your doctorate because of a poor thesis, comprehensives, or dissertation you will get feedback. But the internship is the only milestone for the doctorate (that I know of) where you can be denied your Ph.D. and never know why. That's just the system. Wish APPIC would demand more accountability but that's just the system.

Second question- have not defended dissertation now but it will be done before going on internship. For myself, I will not defend it before that time because my funding is contingent upon whether I have this project. If I don't have this research I lose funding. Not sure if others are in the same boat.

Is Charleston sending out rejections? I read about people getting interviews there, but nothing about getting rejections. I wonder if they have a similar system to UNC where they are trying to finalize their schedules and then send out rejections...

Thanks Manko7. This is my first year applying. I have not defended either and thought that maybe it made a difference when sites were picking amongst so many applicants. I guess the only solution right now is to wait (kinda stating the obvious here 😳) Not knowing is what makes this process so difficult. I am trying not to check my email so often but it's pretty hard!

I wonder how many more applicants there are this year than last year? Anyone hear anything?

I wrote this long reply to your post, but I lost it (something about missing a security token). I wanted to wish you well in this process and I hope it will go well for you this year!

Hi Sunstroke2009,

You seem like a cool and gracious person. I hope you match as well. I can't wait to see the statistics for the number of applicants this year.

I just found this forum today and really wish I would have known about it all along. Thanks for sharing so much information, it is really amazing.
So here goes...
I am a first time applicant. I applied to 20 sites and have heard back from 6.

So Far I have heard back from: Spring Grove Hospital, Reading Hospital, Pittsburgh VA, Lexington VA, Cincinnati VA, and Hampton VA.

Has anyone heard from the Memphis VA?

Thanks Manko7. This is my first year applying. I have not defended either and thought that maybe it made a difference

I guess it makes a difference. I wish they would get off their idealistic clouds though. Without a reason to be in my program (like my dissertation) there is no funding. I just can't stick around and "hope" for a better match next year. As long as the dissertation is done before going to internship I just don't see the problem. I can't do anymore "free" externships either.

I hope you are in a better position than I am. If not, well there are always case management jobs.

Has anyone heard from Cambridge, South Shore, or Franciscan Hospital in Boston?

I hear you. I feel fortunate to have a very satisfying (paid) position as a therapist. I really enjoy working with the SMI population and I have learned more in this position than at my practicum sites (in terms of therapy). In terms of getting a job as a case manager, I actually know individuals with Masters' degrees making less than 30 thousand a year because of the lack of available jobs.... It's sad... I decided to pursue liscensure at the masters level as part of my plan B, so that in case I don't match; I have more employment opportunities.

I just received what seems to be a "wait list" email. I don't get it since they don't say that I am "rejected" OR that I have an interview. Instead they say that "at this time they cannot offer me an interview, but that if an interview date opens up, they will consider my application". I wish they would be a little more direct. All they said was to contact them if I am no longer interested in being considered..... Honestly, I rather receive a rejection than a wait-list email.😕

One of my classmates got a wait list e-mail today too. I didn't even know they had a wait list for internship interviews.

Hi all,

I've been lurking for some time now and decided I should join the fun.

I have heard from: UAMS (interview), Lexington VA (interview), LSU adult (rejection), IU School of Med (rejection), and Central AL VA (rejection)

I am waiting on 9 more and the wait is awful! I can't seem to be productive or do anything but check my email. 🙁 I don't even like email that much!

Has anyone heard from the Memphis VA?

I have not heard from Memphis VA and I really really want to interview there. Hope it is good news for both of us.

Anyone heard from the VA in New Orleans?

Been trying to keep up with everyones posts. To be honest, I am not sure if they help or hinder. I, like everyone else, am waiting to hear from most of my sites (10 out of 16) that people have indicated have sent out some communication. But I hold out a lot of hope. And that is where I find this site helpful. It looks like we are all experiencing some level of anxiety so it is nice to know I am not alone.

Thought the plan B questions was interesting. I have not even pondered the possibility. Haven't even thought about clearinghouse. Guess perhaps that is naive of me.

I do want to be as pro-active as I can and prepare for the interview questions. So I was wondering what questions people recommend reviewing before interviews? What are some of the toughest and bizarre?

Thx!!

Oops title of last should have read "of" not "and"!! Perhaps that explains my minimal response. (lol)

lol - I said the same thing when I tripped earlier today. "Maybe site X doesn't like clumsy people and my LOR writers included that. Ah, that explains it!"

I certainly would like more information during this whole process, just like all of you! :scared:

Got an interview at Hines VA today, so that makes two interviews total (Hines and James Haley VA in Tampa). 6 rejections so far - UCLA - Semel Institute, Nationwide Children's, Long Island Jewish Hospital, San Francisco VA, West LA VA, and Emory.

Still waiting on 13 - Jerry Pettis VA (Loma Linda, CA), Patton State Hospital (CA), Palo Alto VA, VA Northern CA (Martinez, CA), Allegheny General Hospital (PA), Jesse Brown VA (Chicago - Neuro Track), Rush University (Chicago - Neuro Track), Alexian Brothers (Chicago - Neuro), University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center, U of Az College of Medicine (Neuro), Phoenix VA, VA Connecticut (Neuro), Louis Stokes VA (Cleveland - Neuro).

For those of you waiting to hear about VA Palo Alto, I just got an email invite. Hopefully you guys got the same response!

congrats sapsych! that's a great site. i just got a rejection from there... sucks 🙁

This is such bull****. I know I have a good application. I have awesome letters of recommendation. I know that I have way more neuro experience/knowledge/training than others out there and I'm getting so many rejections. I'm an extern at a site right now and I have a much better foundation than the neuro intern here and I'm about the same level as the postdoc fellow.

It really isn't about fit, it's about who you know and the reputation of your program. I'm so frustrated.

Swinx, are you using the APAGS book? I was told that it was very helpful with preparing the students from my program. It may help to practice those questions with colleagues or a faculty member.

Yeah I have it. But I thought since there are several members that have been through this before, they might be able to give us insight into the "curve balls" they received.

Also wondering how people tackled or will tackle some of the questions.

Thx.

U of Az has sent out interviews before Thanksgiving.

Damn, I guess that's bad news for me. I would email them to see if I just didn't get an email, but Dr. Keilin says to wait until after Dec. 15.

I'm not sure how Hines is sending out invites this year. I think it's going one by one. They have different faculty reviewing the applications and so it depends on how fast they finish. I think mine was one of the first they sent out... so you still have time I believe. I'm just worried about U of AZ because between Thanksgiving and now has been a couple of weeks so I don't know if I just didn't get an email or what.

Anybody heard from NY sites such as Mt. Sinai, Creedmoor, Gouverneur, Maimonides, UMDNJ, Trinitas?

UCLA counseling center and RAMS in San Francisco?

has anyone heard (positive or neg) from Emory's general track or has it just been the neuro track?

Hey guys. I've just been reading along, but I decided to become a member today to warn you that some people are not entirely honest about their "interview" notifications. Really. It's not because of staggering invites, either. So, don't psych yourself out if you haven't received an invitation or rejection and others have posted about supposed invites.

I have not heard from Emory and I also applied for the general track. If that helps.

I'm not sure I'm following you - can you elaborate a little bit? Thanks!

I have a friend that got an interview at Creedmore in NY over 3 weeks ago. I also applied there, but have not had a response.

Has anyone heard of Geo Care in FL?

Thanks for the good words. It's tough, though...I am coming off of two rejections, one from a site I thought I was pretty well matched to...I can't believe how scary this process is. I knew it would be, but now that I'm in it...I can't even imagine doing all this again next year.

But hang in there...good luck with everything. Hopefully we'll be posting match news in a few months.

I think South Shore sent out interview offers this week. A friend of mine got an interview with them.

I just got an email for an interview invite there a few minutes ago. So some sites are staggering emails...

I had a classmate who got an invite to Hines Dec 2nd, so clearly they are not doing them all on one day- you still have hope!

Also, I received an invite to a site that someone else on here heard from a week earlier... so you never know!

Good luck!

Heard from Didi Hirsch today... rejected. That's a string of 5 in a row. Ouch.

Geo Care rejected me on 12/1. Guess you're still in the running!

FYI for everyone: I have been offered an interview at UMass Med and received rejections from Pilgrim Psychiatric Center in NY, Geo Care, Inc./ South Florida State Hospital, Northeast Florida State Hospital and FCI Tallahassee in FL, and FCC Butner in NC.

No news today. 11 to go. Fingers crossed!! :xf:

Darkenmirror,

Would you mind sharing what kind of notification you heard from the Hampton VA?

Thanks! 🙂

Colleagues at sites who tell me final lists have yet to be made although there are those who claim to have received interviews. There are some sites that stagger, but not these.

Take these factors into account before giving up hope because interviews were "issued" a while back.

1) The number of people reporting getting an interview or rejection from site. One person? Kind of strange.
2) The deadline date - notification date.
3) Number of individuals interviewed per slot. Low ratio: more time spent finalizing a list before notification because site cannot afford to waste spots.

The malingering has likely abated by now because we really are closer to the December 15th deadline. But if you were upset by a single report around Thanksgiving and it was a late application deadline, you're likely to still hear positive news.
