2010-2011 Internship Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you for replying. In my case, I got a rejection from Yale today and I was kinda expecting this based on the fact that at least 2 individuals here were contacted more than a week ago with invitations.

Done lurking; my status update: heard from Pittsburgh VA, Syracuse VA, Bay Pines VA, Princeton BH, and James Haley VA. Still have 14 to go... one thing that I am taking away from the 9 pages of posts in this forum is that there is no possibility of prediction in this process. The final "straw" was when I saw two sites with both interviews and rejections sent - but I have not heard anything, besides the "we have received your application." So, they have my apps and are carefully deliberating, lol... right?! Bought some good vibes today... in the form of FroYo Half Baked Ice Cream. Hang in there!

I know it's just a 'guide' date, but T-minus 5 days for notifications 😱

Colleagues at sites who tell me final lists have yet to be made although there are those who claim to have received interviews. There are some sites that stagger, but not these.

Take these factors into account before giving up hope because interviews were "issued" a while back.

1) The number of people reporting getting an interview or rejection from site. One person? Kind of strange.
2) The deadline date - notification date.
3) Number of individuals interviewed per slot. Low ratio: more time spent finalizing a list before notification because site cannot afford to waste spots.

The malingering has likely abated by now because we really are closer to the December 15th deadline. But if you were upset by a single report around Thanksgiving and it was a late application deadline, you're likely to still hear positive news.

Am I the only person who has reported getting an interview at a site that has relatively low interview/slot ratio? In my case, the deadline and notification dates were only 7 days apart.

Too bad I match the profile of someone who is "malingering" on a message board long before I am matched with an actual internship site. J/K 😎

Yes, clearly you are a flaming liar 😉

Let's try to keep the accusations out of this forum, shall we? We all know people hear things at different times, and a LOT of sites have only appeared once or twice (if at ALL) in this entire forum. For its length, there is surprisingly little info, nationally, about who people have heard from. I myself may be the only person to have mentioned hearing from Geo Care in FL (a rejection, if anyone missed it - def not making that one up, even if I AM the ONLY person to have mentioned them).

Congrats btw! Hearing back that quick probably means you were a really good candidate/fit for their program, and bodes well for your interview!:claps:(isn't that a cute smiley?!)

I also bought myself some good vibes today... in the form of sugar-coated waffles... yum!!! 👍

I also agree that this process is very unpredictable. I now have three interviews and am still waiting on 4 sites (out of 14). Last Friday, I had 0 interviews. One site I am interviewing at had already sent out interviews and rejections at least a week before. I had actually given up hope on that one...

I can confirm that the Palo Alto VA has sent out email offers.

Has anyone heard anything from Woodhull Medical and Montefiore Medical in NYC?

I agree, it is quite unpredictable. In my case, one site contacted me within 5 days of my application submission, that included two non-working days. I was surprised myself. Then, it has been relatively quite for me. I have a fear that the reason I haven't been hearing much is that I am going to get a bunch of rejections on the 15th.

Has anyone heard anything from Woodhull Medical and Montefiore Medical in NYC?

I have friends still waiting for Montefiore... I haven't heard anyone else say anything about Montefiore. I think I have seen other people post about Wood hull. Good luck today, I have we get good news:xf:

Last year I didn't think we heard from Montefiore until one of the last days (13th, 14th or 15th).

boston children's sent out invites this morning!!

good luck everyone....4 more business days!!!!

Rejection from Emory (general track). Just waiting on 3 more (Long Beach VA, Durham VA, and Wayne State).

Rejection from Yale. Pretty much knew that one was coming, but it still stung.

Still waiting on Western Psych (although I'm pretty sure they're done sending out invites), West Haven VA, Durham VA, New Orleans VA, and the Atlanta VA.

Has anyone heard from Alexian Brothers yet? Rejection or interview?

I'm still waiting on 14 sites! All are withing driving distance of NYC. I have friends who have heard from BPC, Lincoln and Temple in the last day or so. I applied to some of the same and haven't heard so they either haven't made all their offers or rejections.

Rejection from Emory (general track). Just waiting on 3 more (Long Beach VA, Durham VA, and Wayne State).

I did not get an interview at Emory but received an email saying that my application will be "held" and they will still rank me in the match. Is that what you got? I guess it's better than spending the money to travel if I'm not a top candidate... 😳

Still waiting on Alexian... last year they didn't send out notifications until late.

I just got an interview at Allegheny General Hospital.

I am applying in the NYC area. I applied to 16 sites and have gotten 3 rejections (manhattan va, kings county, jacobi) and 2 interviews (columbia, lincoln). I didn't imagine I'd still be waiting to hear from 11 places on Dec 10th and my spirits are definitely getting down, so like others have said, its comforting how many of us are in the same boat.

to the ppl who asked about nyc sites: I applied to montefiore and also haven't heard. I didn't apply to creedmoor.

Nope, mine was a flat out rejection...I must have regressed, last year I made it into the "held" group...oh well!

Has anyone receive rejection emails from Lincoln or Creedmore? I just keep thinking 4 more days and we should hear from most sites.
Also, I got an email from the listserv regarding new sites that received funding. What do you guys think about applying to these sites? I also wonder if they are APA aprooved....

Sugar coated waffles?! Those are some great vibes, lol!

Just got an interview at Hutchings Psychiatric, never was superstitious before, but I think I have Ben and Jerry's to thank 😀

T minus 3 and a half business days...

Hi All,
First may I say as a first-time poster I truly appreciate not only the opportunity to validate my own angst, but also the WELCOME distraction that checking the thread brings? Thank you all for your candor!

I'm wondering if anyone has heard from sites in the Mid-Atlantic region - St. Elizabeths, Springfield Hospital, etc?

Deep breaths....

Are you looking for interns? Maybe they advertised their site via some other platform.

I am waiting to hear from Springfield Hospital in MD.

Why are they taking so long?! Don't they know they're killing us?! lol Still waiting on 11 sites.

Sunstroke, the e-mail came through one of the listservs you sign up for through the MATCH site.

PSYdMNC, I think it is likely the new sites won't be offering this year, but you can always check the APPIC directory to see if they are up there and accepting this year (and if they're APA approved). An email went out today saying the Chicago School of Professional Psych has been accredited and will be accepting apps through Dec 20th. I'm going to look them up in the directory because this whole no-responses-from-the-sites-I-applied-to thing is making me really nervous!

Well, I just got a flurry of emails and none of them were really good.

Emory sent me an interview letter by mistake and then sent me a hold letter.

Central Arkansas VA just sent a rejection. I am a little shocked as I thought it was a safety...not that anything is a safety at this point. Now I am just scared to check my email.

Still waiting on 6 sites. I wish I could go back to bed 🙁

WOW, that's REALLY rough! I'm sorry 🙁 Hopefully the next flurry will bring good news, for real this time!

Ok, so I have received 10 rejections and 3 acceptances. Still waiting for word from Bellevue, Louis Stokes, and Nashville VA.

Rejections from University of North Carolina, Duke, Bay Pines, University of Florida, Boston Consortium, Hartford consortium, James Haley, Mass Gen, Beth Deaconess, and University of Maryland.

I think most of these sites need to revise their brochures and their directors need to get a clear idea of what they are looking for in their candidates. I had received substantially more interview requests last year.

BenjiA,
I've heard from Spring Grove and Reading. I haven't heard from Springfield or Eastern Virginia Medical School. Good Luck!

Just got a rejection from Rush. I can't say that was a total shocker but like someone else said, it stings! 🙁

I am sorry about the rejections... I wish I understood what exactly the sites are looking for in an applicant. I have several experiences, bmed, neuropsych, speak several languages, but have gotten 3 rejections (and expecting at least 3 more based on what I read here). Have 3 interviews, which I am really happy about, but would be nice to get at least 1-2 more.

When did UNC sent their rejection?

Dah! And now a rejection from Hines VA. :bang:
Now I'm scared of my email!

Thanks, IsItOver, I meant to say "they" instead of "you" 🙂

ugh, I'm still waiting on them so I'm guessing this is on its merry way, probably will hit any second.

I need a Valium.

Harvard seems to have taken over most of the internships in the Boston area, which means that their students probably get priority (since they already "know" how fabulous they are), and Harvard is insanely competitive anyway. I didn't even apply to most sites in Boston b/c of their affiliation w/ Harvard, even though that is where I'm from! 🙁

IsItOver, does this mean that I might not even stand a chance at McLean? 🙁

i have to say, the Hines VA rejection was especially painful because it came as a letter attachment, which i hoped meant good news. instead i just got to see my rejection on their nice letterhead.

ooh this is good to know. I would be thinking good things too.

Just got an invite to Albany Consortium.

Awww, I have no idea! Don't take my lack of self-confidence to mean YOU aren't a competitive applicant. I don't actually know how hard they are to get in to, I just know Harvard's reputation, so when I saw any site was affiliated with them I just assumed they would be equally difficult. I know at least one of the Harvard sites wanted to you have multiple publications already, which I def don't, but if you felt you met their criteria than I am sure you have a chance!

Sending good vibes your way :xf:

Same with the Denver VA. There was no message... just a fancy attachment. I ended up downloading my rejection!

I think my worst rejection email came from UCLA, though.

"In the event that you are interested in knowing where internships are available after awards have been made, contact your training director who will have information about the clearinghouse. "

Perhaps they were sincerely trying to be helpful? I think rejection letters say a lot about a site.

Good luck in these next few days, everyone! The waiting is almost over!

This sucks so bad....rejection from Creedmore today. So far 4 rejections and no interviews. Waiting patiently on 6 more sites all in NYC.

I know how you feel MsPHd2B.... I have 5 rejections and no interviews so far. The waiting is awful. I am trying to plan my afternoon so that I don't stay home and stay my email every 10 minutes. lol. Someone told me some good "advice" today. They said that I should focus on all that I have accomplished in the past 3-4 years and really feel good about that. I know it sounds kinda cheesy, but really, I'm sure that most of us in this process have accomplished a lot. i guess the take home message is that we are all so focused on the future (interviews, matching, internship) that we forget that we have come a long way in order to be where we are....

I really wish I could post some good news on here... but alas, it isn't to be... at least not yet!

Got a rejection from Patton State Hospital this morning. They said they got 168 applicants 😱 (for 6 spots; last year they got 139 applicants). This is just getting to be ridiculous. I am really curious to see how many people applied and the average number of sites to which they applied...

Sorry, Manko7, I asked this question earlier, but I was wondering when you got the email from UNC. I have been waiting to her from them for a while...

We were talking a bit about this in another thread, and unfortunately I think the numbers are going to be even worse than last year. Most of the sites I looked at last year had 150+ applicants (highest was 400+), and it is probably just going to go higher.

I would definitely recommend trying to stay grounded (don't get too high or too low).
