2010-2011 Internship Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do you mind me asking when/how you heard from Boston Children's? I thought they may have had something in the materials about contacting them on the 7th to hear about your interview status so I was wondering if you did that or if they have contacted you?

I will be sending lots of good thoughts your way for your next one to be an invite- good luck to you!

Hey all,
Thought I'd chime in and quit lurking. Applied to 11 sites and have heard back from 4- Yes Yale and NJVA; No West Haven VA and CT Valley.
Lets all try to keep the faith. There was something special about all of us that made our incredibly competitive doctoral programs want to work with us!

Congrats on the Yale interview! When did you hear from them and what track did you apply to? I am anxiously waiting to hear from them as they have a Hispanic clinic and I would love to be able to work with Latinos during the internship/career.

Is there anyone out there that has not received any interview offers or am I the only one...

I am really discouraged that my school did not do more to prepare students for internship applications. I feel that I have literally paid dearly to learn this process (at least $600 in applications) and to what end? This has been a complete sham and 10 rejection letters later I'm wondering what's next. I still have applications out there, however, a lot were VA apps, and now I realize I was never a contender to begin with. Any one else feeling as blindsited as I do?

I'm really to read about your situation. Our DCT was not very involved this year and we were generally advised by the people who applied last year and matched. Are you still waiting to hear from other sites? I definitely feel blindsided by the responses. Was rejected from 2 sites that I thought were "sure" and got interviews at 3 top-tier sites..
I hope it will get better for you!

I received an email this morning. I did not contact them.

Thanks for the well wishes!

Thanks! I did not contact them--they just emailed me spontaneously this afternoon. My friend who has a lot more peds experience has not heard from them either, which makes me think that invitations to interview will be sent out later on and that they were getting the rejections out of the way first. So if you didn't hear anything today, you could be getting an interview! Hope it works out. 🙂

Congratuations to all who have received interviews! Reading everyone's posts is starting to make me a bit nervous. I've only heard from 2 sites (one interview and one rejection) and I'm still waiting on many sites. Logically I know that I still have until the 15th to hear but it seems like everyone is hearing from most of their sites. Just wanted to put this out there in case there were others in the same boat.

You are definitely not the only one in this boat. I've had two rejections and am still waiting on 11 other sites.

<insert long exhausted sigh here>

Hey bluefish25, I totally hear you. I've heard from 5 of 10 sites, and I've seen posts on this site about the sites that I haven't heard from, so I'm intermittently very pessimistic about my chances of getting more interviews. Hang in there and good luck :luck: I bet you will have more good news to come.

I feel the same way. I've heard from 6 out of 14 sites (4 rejections and 2 interviews). Here are the sites that I have NOT heard from that I know have notified other applicants: Western Psych, UIC, UCSD, McLean, and the Denver VA. I am not very optimistic about these sites, although I've been told that all sites are required by APPIC to notify us of our status (so perhaps there is still hope?). I know that last year, everyone who applied from my program heard back from all of their sites by Dec. 15th with the exception of Western Psych. My friend called them on the 16th and she was told, "Your (rejection) letter is in the mail." Personally, I'd prefer to be rejected over email. 🙂

institute of living is sending out interview offers this morning (via email)

I'm not sure there is much to be said that can help with the difficulty of this process for students. The circumstances of insufficient training sites is terrible. BUT I think it is very important in the process to remember that it is your application that is being "rejected"--not YOU as a person and novice psychologist. In fact, the folks making these decisions struggle to choose among many good applicants. Many, many factors go into the choices they make and when we send out "sorry, no interview" letters it is often with regret. AND it is also often true that factors that lead to someone being selected instead of you is related to a practical fact that is not personal but simply a matter of record: dissertation progress, languages skills the site needs, dissertation topic or clinical experience that is relevant to the site population. Yes, the tone of your essays and letter or the program's knowledge of your school and program can be important--but just as often it is not about you, but is about your combination of factors in relation to the larger data field of the whole group of applicants. So at this stage it is important to give your self a few hours for mending from the understandable effects of "rejection dejection" and letting go of the ideas you had about that site--and then it is way more important to move on to the possibilities you do have (and to getting the dissertation done!) Focusing on the strengths you know you do have (and are recognized by sites that do want to see you) is what helps you go into interviews feeling like you are finding your "fit" (even through learning where you don't get to go)

has anyone received an interview from Boston Children's. If so, would you share the possible interview dates?

5 Rejections (McLean, Cornell, Duke, Minneapolis VA, and UIC); 1 interview (UCSD) No more bad news please...I have 6 to go...

I just wanted to echo this sentiment. I've been reviewing applicants for my site, and there hasn't been a "bad" one in the bunch. A short year ago I was in your position, and I remember how personal it felt to be rejected from a site, particularly if I really felt like it was a perfect match. Now that I'm on the other side, I have a slightly better appreciation that it isn't a rejection of the applicant because they stink, it is because the combination of factors don't match up as well. Other times there are all great applicants, and something has to give. For some sites (particularly counseling sites) it seems that prior experience in the setting seems to be important, and many great applicants missed out because they didn't have this. For other sites it is dissertation project, as DCT's want to see their people finish internship and move into post-doc, and NOT get stuck in that limbo between finishing internship, but not receiving a degree.

The process is long, so be careful not to let yourself get too high or too low. One of the best things I did for myself when I went through the process was to step away from "Outlook". I'd go play a round of golf, go jump in the ocean, I'd hang out with outside friends who don't know anything about "match", or I'd take the afternoon off and relax in my hammock. Yes....I miss nice weather, as I'm staring at a few inches of snow, and there is no beach in sight. 🙁

Rejections from Duke, St. Luke's, and U of NM Health Sciences.

Well today marked a turning point for me. Got my 8th rejection. So officially half my sites have rejected me. 3 interview offers.

I actually had a better interview result last year. Biggest change this year was that I received a grant. I am now regretting putting that in my letter. Afterall, what site would want someone who already has a sustainable line of research? I clearly did not market myself as post-doc material and therefore I do not "fit." 🙁

Try to keep your chin up! I know a lot of us are feeling somewhat defeated, but it's not over yet. Who knows, maybe your remaining sites will all be interviews and you'll end up with half interviews and half rejections.
No responses for me for the past two days. Hopefully good news is around the corner for all of us! :xf:

I've been checking this site everyday and decided to come out of lurking. I have not had interviews or rejections from any sites. I am starting to get a little discouraged. I know my applications went through because I got a "We have received you application" message from one site.

We still have a week to hear back. A lot of sites are taking longer than usual because of the new electronic process, they held on to applications longer before reviewing.

I know my practicum site is going to start notifying applicants tomorrow. (They are giving me good news I heard). So I think we'll start hearing a lot of responses by the end of this week.

Manko7 - This is rough for both of us, and those of us that didn't match this year have a much higher stress level. I know you are pessimistic now, but come interview time try to stay positive, because it'll show. Good luck. I certainly feel for you. FYI - you have more interviews than I do right now.

I also have 8 rejections as of today. However, I have a whopping zero interviews. I'm fairly certain at this point that I will not be going on internship this year 🙁

There's still time. Last year I had 12 rejections before I got any interviews. I ended up with 4 interviews. Now I'm not the best example because I still didn't match, but if you make the best of the interviews that you do get, it can still happen.

Rejections from Duke, St. Luke's, and U of NM Health Sciences.

Is this St. Luke's Roosevelt in NYC? Now I'm anxious because I applied there and I haven't heard a peep. The way things have been going for me, my rejection is probably on the way! Do sites typically notify all their rejected applicants all at once?

Update for anyone applying to these sites

Interviews: UAB, Casa Pacifica, IU School of Medicine, Children's Hospital of Michigan, and Youth Opportunity Center

Rejections: Childrens Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota, Children's Mercy, and University of Illinois at Chicago

Hopefully we'll here more tomorrow!

has anyone received a rejection from UNC? do you think sites who have sent out interview offers but not rejections, have "waitlist" type applications - where they are waiting to see if people turn down interviews before inviting them?

I am also waiting to hear from UNC and I was thinking, too, that they probably have a "waitlist" with people they will contacting after they heard from their top applicants

has anyone heard anything from the child clinical track of cincinnati children's? my colleague heard from the behavioral medicine track quite a while ago, but i haven't gotten a rejection yet. fun times.

Yup, that's the one. Hopefully your news is better than mine!

Hmmm, the "waitlist." I guess many sites do not mention these but I am sure they happen. Frankly it would certainly help if sites were candid about the "waitlist" if it exists. I remember when I heard feedback from sites in graduate school interviews that some would tell me if I was top tier or second tier hopefuls. This was immensely helpful to me in order to prioritize offers from all the sites.

In the same way I there needs to be a system in place in internship as well. The way I see it if I know I have an equal chance at matching I would be able to make an informed decision on travel plans. Last year
I traveled to sites only to find that they had already picked their candidates and were really just going through the motions. At $500 average per site traveling expenses you can imagine how annoying that was to say the least.

Johnson42- Thank you again for your patience and words of encouragement. I'm pretty frustrated with this process. I feel that many of the top quality candidates are not getting a fair shake because a site may be interested in narrowly defined qualities of "fit." Hence, so many exceptional people do not match, while less capable folks are allowed to progress. I know the decisions are often tough, but too often the decision is about "who you know" and where one externed.

Frankly that's fine with me for employment. Getting a job is about connections and I can accept this. It's the way of the world. But not for getting the Ph.D. The attainment of recognition for doctoral education should NOT be dependent on who one knows. That cheapens the degree. I just want my degree and I want to get out of this field.

I am sorry, manko7. have you spoken to your dct about your lack of interviews? I know they can sometimes pull strings to get you into a site, even if it is unfunded.

It really seems like the whole system is imploding this year: WAY too few sites and WAY too many applicants. People who have not matched from past years are coming back this year and putting additional strain on the system. I know tons of top quality people who are getting rejected from tons of sites and getting very few interviews. I think the glut of applications is causing sites to just do a cursory look at applications and make split second decisions. My internship site has seen a 400 percent increase in applications this year and the dct is spending 2 minutes or so on each and moving on.

There is going to have to be an uprising among applicants to get things changed and lawsuits will have to be filed against the professional schools, APA, and especially APPIC. If most of us had seen an impending catastrophe like this happen, we would be fired. However, it seems like APPIC likes to hold fancy conferences to discuss the matter over fine dining and wine.

I wrote this long reply to your post, but I lost it (something about missing a security token). I wanted to wish you well in this process and I hope it will go well for you this year!

Yesterday I heard from the VA Los Angeles Amb Care Center... no interview. It was a tough one. They were my top site. No news today... so here's hoping tomorrow is better!👍

Has anyone heard from Bellevue Hospital adult track?

Another day of waiting for news! I hope we all receive good news today. This is the first time I write on here. I check the blog everyday, it helps. So far I have received 2 'rejections' and NO interviews. I received my 2nd rejection from Princeton Behavioral yesterday. They said that they received 122 apps and were conducting 20 interviews. I'm starting to believe that this may not be my internship year and I am working on my plan B.

About Belleview, I heard from a friend that she knows 2 forensic students that have interviews. I wanted to ask if anyone knows about Pine Grove in Mississippi. I hope everyone has a good day as we approach Dec 15!

I was one of the other 102 rejections from there. Hang in there!

Boston Children's just sent interviews by e-mail.

Thanks to those of you that have actually been through the interview process and those that are participating in the selection of candidates, for speaking to us in this forum. Regardless, I feel I am an excellent candidate and just fell victim to a lack of knowledge of how this process really works. I'm glad that I over did it with the amount of sites I applied to. However, I am more the wiser and I am definately constructing my plan B. I am over the pity party (the one I held for myself) and will definately do things differently if I have to go through this again.

Still waiting to hear from other sites. I will definately be addressing this with the school I attend. Lots of Luck with your interviews. 🙂

That happened to me on my first go-around. Applying was an after thought, as I had just finished up my research and I was trying to pick out sites, get my LORs, transcripts, etc....in about a month, and it just wasn't enough time. Good sites, bad fits, didn't match. Ultimately I re-applied, interviewed at great sites that WERE a good fit for me, and matched to a great site. Just hang in there.

By Pine Grove, do you mean the Southern Mississippi Internship Consortium in Hattiesburg? If so, I have heard from them. Hang in there!

Hopefully, you will not have to go through this process again. However, from someone on round two, I feel much more prepared and confident this time. To be honest, I am also more anxious this time since I know the reality of the stakes, but properly managed anxiety can mean productivity.

If this was baseball I'd have a full count, 2 and 3; 2 rejections, 3 interviews. Two open houses. Waiting on 10 more sites.

This is so unbelieveably stressful. What's everyone's plan B? I'm not sure if I can handle doing this again next year.

Has anyone heard of any rejections from UNC or Western Psych? I've seen that people have gotten interviews...just would like to know whether or not to have any more hope.

i didn't apply to western psych...but several of us in my program applied to UNC...one of us received an interview on monday and rest of us have heard nothing. as the days go by our hope is fading....

Has anyone heard from the Palo Alto VA, the Long Beach VA, Houston VA, or Pacific Islands VA?
