2010-2011 Internship Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
While I (as an applicant) understand people's frustration with slow turnaround, don't you think that the sites and the faculty responsible for the internship process do the best that they can?? I have to believe that everyone in this process wants to do what's best for everyone in the situation. I think some of our (the applicants) anxieties and insecurities are playing into these comments, and I'm not sure it's fair to those who are responsible for offering interviews. We don't know what the processes are on their side...so how about let's give them the benefit of the doubt. Technically, they don't have to tell us until the date given, and I'm sure they're doing the best they can....

I was simply asking a question. My response had nothing to do with my insecurities and wasn't phrased to be attacking to the initial poster. I completely understand that they are under no obilgation to let us know until their notification date, however I was just curious...so I asked a question.

As a late-comer to this convo I just want to say that I think it is important that we all be aware of how we word/phrase things. In addition, we have been saying left and right "don't take the process personally" and I think that can also be said of people's responses on this forum. We need to be careful how we word things, since others can't HEAR our intonation, and also not assume the worst of what others say (and just because we are referenced does not mean we are being attacked).

I also want to thank those who are participating in intern selection at their programs for providing us with their insights. I think we all need to be extra concientous as to how we phrase our questions to these people so as not to scare them off - they don't need to even be telling us anything on here after all.

In regard to sending a thank you note, I don't think it really is going to help or hinder your chances, but given that it has the potential to be viewed negative, I won't be sending any. My TD told us that APPIC asked programs to tell their students not to send notes, as it was "overwhelming" to sites last year. I guess I can understand that, if all or most of those who you interviewed sent notes, it could be a bit much.

Rejection from LA Children's. 🙁

Anyone hear from Jackson Memorial in Miami, or Miami Children's?

CBTClinPsycher, I honestly and truly believe the jury is still out on that. I'd like to believe that faculty have tried their best. But then again consider that these faculty are the same ones over the years that have allowed the APPIC levels to escalate to the insane levels that it has.

CBTClinPsycher, about 25% of people do not match? This is the same proportion of people who were unemployed at the height of the Great Depression. The committees that APA put together to solve this crisis are comprised of internship directors. They have impotently issued platitudinous edicts. A policy completely bereft of teeth.

Now, I have talked with many who have observed their sites in action. Some sites have already picked candidates before you even applied and backroom deals are probably more common than admitted. I once noted the brochure of one site. I noticed that in its listings of where applicants wre from they had quite a few from one particular area. When I inquired about this I received a neutral response. This year that page was removed from the site. At another site, I have heard that the faculty pick based on gender and racial composition (e.g. "ok we need one hispanic, three females,..."). On other occasions, many times its about who you know and that's just not an ethical way to award a Ph.D. I understand that occurs for jobs, but a Ph.D. should be conferred based on attainment of skills in the field. I know for a fact a student at my place was matched based on a backroom deal put together by someone notable in our field.

I understand that there is a belief in a just world at issue. I too want to share in this belief. But until the process is stabilized I think it's important to continue to air concerns and criticisms. Only with enough momentum will change ever occur. If we continue to believe the process is just then the blame will be shifted onto the students for not matching and my friend, that is just not right.

I believe the current leadership incapable but I have faith that our generation will have experienced enough hardship to enact real progress.

But Isitover, this is an anonymous board. There is safety in anonymity.

It is in the best interest of the entire field for internship committees to be held accountable. The lives of people are at stake.

Last year I sent out quite a few. Our had DCT told us it was essential so I did it. Frankly I am with you on this issue. I think with so many applicants the faculty at these sites must be numb to these notes. It was a waste of time, money, and it was stressful tracking down addresses and trying to write on airplanes. This year I plan to ask beforehand.

I heard from a reliable source that JMH in Miami has not began sending out responses... I'm really anxious to know anything about Alexian Brothers, Lincoln, Napa, Dutchess, Wasatch in UT, Cherokee, Hudson River, and SUNY Medical... Anyone know about these sites?

I didn't bother....as many of the sites were upfront and said not to send anything, and only contact if we had a question.

I am also waiting on JMH Miama, Lincoln and Hiver. Not a peep so far.

Good luck!! :luck:

I think you are forgetting that it is also a VOLUNTARY board. If we aren't courteous/conscientious, they may simply stop writing to us. Would you keep writing to a forum on which you were being attacked? Not to say we shouldn't express our opinions (like in your previous post aimed at APPIC and the process in general) but we need to be aware of the things we aim directly at an individual. I certainly would not hang around giving insights I was not mandated to if people were being rude and/or aggressive toward me. Most clients don't tell us stuff when we are aggressive or directive with them either. Again, it is just putting into practice here what we already know.

And, since it IS anonymous, we can't exactly hold them accountable on here, can we?

:idea:I want to throw something out there and see what people think. We all know that sites are receiving a lot more application this year than in previous years. This is due to a combination of factors (other sites closing down, spill over from last year) but I believe is due at least in part to the new online system which makes it easier to submit a large number of applications (no copying, mailing, etc). Most people seem to be applying to the recommended 15 sites, or more, and sites are receiving 140+ (?) applicants for like 4-6 positions, in many cases.

Having just been rejected from my top two sites, I got to thinking how they are very likely going to interview someone who only ranks them as their #12 or #15 (etc). Thus, that person seems unlikely to be matched to them, as they will not rank high on that person's Match list. I feel it would have been a much better use of everyone's time if the site was interviewing people who really sincerely wanted to be there.

I would propose that APPIC cap the number of sites to which we are allowed to apply to say...10? Then sites would only get, for example, like 100 applicants instead of 140. This would give them more time to read applications AND would make the process actually less competitive for us because we would be competing with less people. In addition, sites would KNOW that they ranked in the top 10 for their applicants.

I would imagine APPIC would be less than open to this idea because it would also save applicants money - thus making them lose money ($100 if you applied to 10 instead of 15). Currently, we feel we HAVE to apply to tons of sites because everyone else is, so if we don't we are hurting our chances. But if everyone was limited then it would actually be almost more fair. In addition, you would probably have less sites with openings after Match because, again, people would only be applying to places they really wanted.

Thoughts?:help:

If you meant Dutchess County in NY I heard from them earlier in the week. I have not heard yet from Lincoln but have a friend who received an interview offer late last week.

Thank you kedmonkey. I hope you got an interview at Dutchess!

childpsych11, I have friends that applied to Miami Children's and they have not heard anything yet.

Isitover, I hope that the feedback we provide APPIC after this whole process is over makes a difference and offers some solution to the match imbalance. I am trying to remember that there is little I can do right now but wait. I hope we hear from the sites you mentioned soon. I would live an interview at any of those places.... I will now keep working on my dissertation (sigh)

It is an interesting proposal, but economic theory dictates it won't work. Limited resources and all of that.

You are assuming there would be an equal decrease across the board, instead of a variable change for sites. With 15 applications, an applicant may apply to 8 "top" sites, 5 "middle", and 2 "lower" sites. With a 10 application cap, how likely is an applicant to reduce their numbers equally? More likely you'd see 7 "top" sites, 3 "middle" sites, and 0 applications to the "lower" sites. Obviously not everyone will have the same set of sites, but traditionally many of the sites that receive the most applications are also in geographically popular sites, so they will still receive their numbers, and there will just be less applicants for other sites. For example, the NYC sites may a decrease, but there are many people who are only looking there, so their 10 will be allocated there no matter what.

The problem with a reduction for the other sites is that they will not be able to interview enough quality applicants, and thus would be less likely to rank as many applicants, resulting in less "matches". Those sites will go into the Clearing House, along with more unmatched people, and now the CH process will be an even bigger event, with the majority of decisions being made with less information on both sides. Applicants nor sites want this dynamic, because they both will be less sure of the fit, and training may suffer in the long run.

I appreciate that time was taken to ensure the in depth review of each applicant. However, if you knew yesterday who you were going to offer interviews to, why would you wait until Monday to send out notifications? Knowing that applicants are waiting expectantly, why wait so long?

As a faculty, we didn't finish our review for interview invites until after the end of the business day on Thursday. Keep in mind that even after the initial in depth review, we still met for almost 4 hours to decide on the final "yes/no" list for invites. Friday, the administrative staff responsible for actually sending out the email and snail mail (we do both) notifications was committed to other duties in the agency and could not get to them until Monday. Hence, notifications are not going to be sent until then. It truly is no more complicated than that. We are aware that applicants are eagerly awaiting news, but Monday was the best we could do at our program.

I heard from SUNY Medical a while ago, it's posted on this thread somewhere.I think someone else posted about Napa, too.

Any news from UC San Diego/VA? Togus VA? Medical College of Georgia? Long Island Jewish (Zucker)?

And for anybody waiting, Yale DBT track sent out invites on friday! 🙂

I also was wondering about UCSD/VA. I know they have a couple different tracks - anyone heard about B-Med? Did anyone else apply to and hear from the VA in Buffalo?
Out to try to get my mind off of this for a night! :hardy:

Applied to the VA in Buffalo, but nothing so far...

I have a feeling there has been nothing new since I asked last time...but thought I would put it out there just in case.

Any word (invites or rejections) recently from BUMC-multicultural, Cambridge Health Alliance, Franciscan Hospital, or UNC?

Good luck everyone!

BUMC-CMTP had their interview this past Thursday(12/10) and the Thursday (12/3) before that, they sent out their interview offer as early as 11/17. I am not sure if they are sending out more invites.

good to know! i wish programs would send their rejections already....

hi all,
just joined this thread, glad to have folks to commiserate (and hopefully celebrate) with. as of today I have 7 rejections and no interviews. sites I've heard from:
Pennsylvania Hospital
American U CC
UVA CC
Stony Brook CC
Institute of Living
King's County Hospital
Pace CC

Sites I'm waiting to hear from (and feeling increasingly pessimistic about my odds):
RAMS SF
U of Ill. Chicago CC
Howard U. CC
Pacific Islands VA
Karen Horney Clinic
Bronx Psychiatric Center

Any updates from sites that have heard from any of my latter ones would be greatly appreciated. this is my first year in the match system...trying to get my head around the idea I might not even get to interview this year. ouch.
hang in there everyone.

Rejection from LA Children's. 🙁

Anyone hear from Jackson Memorial in Miami, or Miami Children's?

I personally have not heard from Miami Children's.

Up to 13 rejections... waiting on 5.... i agree with the feeling of being dejected at this point. surprisingly not as beat up as i would have thought i'd be but still not in a great place either, especially since 4 of my remaining 5 are probably the most competitive on the list...

congrats to those of you doing well!!!

Remember that sites are struggling this year to adapt to the new technology of online apps too--and they need time if they are going to read all you wrote and cross check decisions to make sure they are sending them out correctly. Also: I think sites can decide who they are not going to see sooner than who they will see. If there is an obvious lack of fit or enough other strong candidates are further along on their dissertation or they need a high number of minimum hours in a certain domain, etc.--then they can quickly rule out a subset of the field. The harder work is deciding who to "rule in" for interviews when there is a huge field of applicants. And if you are a large system with multiple readers than you have to have meetings to winnow down lists. It all takes time and rushing does not lead to better outcomes for anyone.

I heard that Salem VA sent out invitations last Monday and will start interviewing tomorrow. I am not sure if this is their only round of interviews or they will have another one in January.

Hi aenlow, I am also waiting on Cherokee Health Systems.... I haven't heard anything.... I was at a Christmas party last night and there were 4-5 of us applying this year... Most of us had at least 5 rejections and there were applicants that had yet to receive an interview.... I hope we hear from most of our remaining sites Monday and Tuesday... All we need is one great interview to make it happen. Good Luck guys. :xf:
