2010-2011 Internship Thread

Got an interview at Trinitas! Finally some word. Word. Just two more sites to hear from. But what seemed like a few days ago was the worst day the 14th with 6 rejections back to back.... This board has been so good to me. Thank you.

I GOT AN INTERVIEW!!!!!!!!!!!!

The TD for Hudson called (sooooo nice) and said the chief psychologist from Rockland is actually doing the formal notifications and will call me sometime before next Wednesday (but I can also call them, and she gave me the number). She wasn't sure if they were doing the same interview dates as Poughkeepsie (sp?). Just a heads up: her number came up "Unknown" which means it is blocked.

Good luck to those waiting!!!

ME TOO!!!!! YAY! She just called, which is amazing because it is 7:30 there! She was SO nice and I am SO happy! Good luck to all those still waiting to hear from them or anywhere else for that matter!

So I just got the weirdest (and rudest in my opinion) response from a DCT. I emailed a site this afternoon because their notification date was 12/15 and I still had not heard from them one way or the other. So, like many of us, I sent a very brief email politely inquiring about my application status.

In the response I got back, the DCT stated that she had emailed me on Friday letting me know that I wouldn't be offered an interview and that she used the same email address that I emailed her from so she didn't know how I couldn't have received the email. Then she basically accused me of sending the email to fish for an interview invitation and if I didn't get enough interviews, this was not the way to get them.

I'm kind of shocked. I have 8 interviews and I was in no way fishing for an interview. I simply wanted to hear back from all my sites so I could begin to finalize travel plans.

In hindsight I'm glad a didn't get the interview at this site, I wouldn't want to spend the year working with this person.

I'm so sorry to hear about that, it's never fun to get a vindictive email like that. A simple "sorry you were not invited and sorry you didn't receive our email earlier" would have sufficed.

Earlier in the process I received a rejection email that for the longest time I couldn't figure out who it was from. The person that emailed did not even bother to put a SUBJECT LINE in. The email itself was from an obscure thing (like aol.com or something) and there was NO CONTENT. It was simply an attachment that said "Internship.doc"

Of course the attachment indicated where it was from and that it was a rejection, but c'mon. No subject line? I can only imagine the process being 5 seconds: click *compose email* click *attachments* *attach* click *send*
Glad I got rejected from them, couldn't even show the courtesy to be just a little more thoughtful after we put all our efforts into it. Oh well.

Congrats!

Did you hear via email or phone?

I am also sorry that you had such an unpleasant experience with that site. I think that being rejected seems like a good thing because those are not the kinds of people you want to work with. I also had a weird rejection experience or two. A few weeks back I also got an email from an aol address with no subject line that just had one line of text telling me to buzz off. Apparently there are some sites out there that we should be overjoyed to be rejected from. I guess it happens...

Best of luck with the interviews you have!

Email. I was so excited that I couldn't even make a complete sentence. oops.

Congratulations!!! Hrm, I guess that's a no for me, haven't heard back yet.
Good luck 🙂

I agree with what everyone else has shared about these wonderful "rejection" emails. One thing I have learned is that I will NEVER be so rude in my future career. Here is my favorite, that I received today. Mind you it was 2 days late but had 12/15 as the date in the attachment:

"I want to let you know that we will not be inviting you for an interview and we will not be ranking you on the list we will be sending to the APPIC match. The competition for our program is significant and we will not be able to invite or rank all of the applicants."

Sweet, I think I get the drift! And I will not be using your run-on sentence structure as a template for writing good essays or making an impression on people in the future.

Here's the best rejection email story ever: Last year a certain very prestigious site (which shall remain nameless) sent a rejection email to about 100 applicants politely letting them know they'd not be interviewed. Unfortunately, the administrative assistant forgot to hide the names of the recipients, so we could all scan the list and find all of our friends and colleagues who'd been rejected. How embarrassing!

I'm sorry to hear that other people have had undesirable rejection experiences as well. Although it does make me feel better to know that I'm not the only one.

I understand that DCTs are very busy especially during application time, but it takes the same amount of time to be kind as it does to be nasty and I don't quite understand why you wouldn't choose to be kind to someone who liked your site enough to put so much time and effort into applying. (hows that for a run-on sentence)

I know that happened to my friend who applied to Mt. Sinai. I have no qualms about naming institutions. If I were to receive an impolite email I would immediately list it in this public forum to inform other members of this board. Perhaps it's just me, but the reputation of rude DCTs who inflict insensitivity on vulnerable students should not be protected by anonymity. In this thread I have disseminated my experiences from specific sites that exhibited bad behavior.

Totally there with you! I just got a call from Hudson/Rockland (I left a message earlier) and they invited me for an interview!!!! YAYAY! So great following 8 straight rejections (and still 2 sites unknown)! I swear, this site keeps me grounded (and gave me the courage to call for a status update from Hudson)!

2 left to hear from - Biloxi VA and WVU/Charleston :luck:

Congrats to all of you receiving interviews, I guess no news does mean good news. So many of us applied to Hudson and really wanted an interview and it sounds like most of us are getting interviews there! What I like most about the site is having Fridays to consult, be part of seminars and get together with all of the staff... It would be cool if some of us ended up matching there! I'm starting to get nervous about interviewing and plan to start reviewing material this weekend.... Anyone else a little nervous?

I couldn't agree more! This forum is here so we can all learn from and help each other - and that should include words of caution when we know a site or DCT may be unfavorable. For people who have already posted their storeis, I would be very grateful to know what sites you were talking about. We don't know who YOU are anyway, and you already got rejected, so where's the harm in telling us? 🙂

I can only say that from my perspective, the DCT at Manhattan Psychiatric was not nice. I am hesitant to say anymore (paranoia 😉) but I am now totally turned off to the site after speaking to him on the phone. Additionally, I have spoken to 4 other DCT's that were personable, accommodating and easy to talk to so it makes my experience with MP stand out more. That's my opinion.... (Now I am having irrational thoughts that someone is going to put all of this together and know who I am

I just got an e-mail from Howard U. I was not selected for an interview. Huh. That's a much better way of saying it than rejected or denied or even passed up. I'm disappointed, but I'm happy to know.

So, final count = 4 interviews.

Wichita State U
Grand Valley State U
Hudson River Regional (Poughkeepsie)
Hutchings Psych Center

Congrats on being added to the roster 2B Mind Doc and Starpsych!:highfive: I am so happy for you both (and the rest of us!). Did you guys set up your interview dates yet??

PSYdMHC, I am wicked excited that a bunch of us have interviews. :soexcited:I feel like I already have a relationship with you guys, and even if we have separate sites we would still have Fridays together (and I agree, that is probably my favorite thing about Hudson). I am a little nervous about interviewing too, but I am trying to stay calm and remember that there is something about me that got me this far, and got me that interview, and hopefully that will also help me ace the interview itself (btw, it is not a run on sentence as long as it has correct punctuation! hehe). I don't think a cram session is going to decide if I am accepted, but I will def be reviewing the brochure and my CL on the plane trip there!

PhDee, I am sorry about Harvard U. Their loss, right? That's what my supervisor keeps telling me. It doesn't really make me feel better, but thought it might help you! 😉

Bluefish, I just want to say that is a horrendous way for a DCT to respond to an applicant. I think it is appalling and just want to apologize FOR her for making you go through that. Of all the stories, I think yours was the most extreme and shocking. I would be included to tell your TD, so they can warn future applicants that she may be unfriendly to inquiry.

Oooo, really? That's not good, they are the last site I am waiting to hear from! Well I def appreciate you sharing that. If they reject me, I won't feel as bad! lol But I will also take it with a grain of salt - we all have bad days. I am planning to contact them after I set up my Hudson interview, just to find out WHEN they will be interviewing. That way I can at least tentatively include them in my travel plans. It'll be interesting to see how he reacts to that/me... 😱

Absolutely!! I am starting to lose the "HOORAY, I have interviews" thrill and getting increasingly anxious as the interview dates approach... guess we can put that nervous energy to good use (like doing the prep work involved with interviews - after this last busy semester)!:banana:

I am INCREDIBLY nervous! I don't even know what else to say about that. I, too, plan to begin reviewing material and lists of general interview questions this weekend.

Thanks for the condolences. Actually, it was Howard, and I started thinking that maybe they were a little too unorganized for me to be comfortable doing my internship there (based on the way their information is presented, discrepancies I noticed, and the lateness of the response). Not to mention that my theoretical orientation wouldn't exactly be the greatest fit. I'm sure it's better this way. That may be rationalization on my part, but whatever gets me through this, yes? 😛

Yes...I have been completely turned off by their lack of organization as well...talking about discrepancies...on the appic site it says the pay is 25,000 but their website says 18,000...and how about the fact that this is the 3rd different person listed as their training director at that site since the directory went online

:hello:The way I cope with my anxiety is by trying to control as much of the process as possible - like figuring out when I am traveling. But I can't do anymore planning tonight if you guys don't tell me what you heard about Rockland's interview dates! I need you 2B Mind Doc and Starpsych!! lol

Thank you PsydMHC. Likewise, I want to say that the folks at Bay Pines were quite friendly.

I know that probably stings. Just hang in there, eventually we will ALL get in the internship club. Right?

I could not fathom what it is like to be in a situation as yours... it must be very, very tough and frustrating. I do not know the specifics of what you did with the LOR so I cannot share my perspective on it.

Am I correct in thinking that what you are saying is that the ends justify the means, even if the means may go against the very principles which we all have agreed to abide by? That no obvious harm is done so it is justifiable to use "unethical" means to achieve our goals?

In the situation that was brought up with the other poster, the harm could be about breaking one's trust with the referee. If the envelope is sealed and we are not privy to the information, then it may be confidential.

I wish you all the best in this process and hope that you are matched with a wonderful site that helps you to achieve your goals.:luck:

Hi flow2pattern,

Thank you for your kind and supportive words. I could not inspect my letters this year but I did inspect them last year. I'm not sure its a question of whether the means justify the ends. It's the process that justifies the end. I believe APA's psychology process of attaining a doctorate is a fraud. To do everything asked of you by your APA accredited institution and then to be put through an internship process so patently unfair is a matter of fraud to me. If I had the money and the will I would certainly seek counsel on whether legal action is possible (I have neither the resources nor the will).

To me, I cannot fathom going through 7 years of schooling only to be told at the end that I am not allowed to obtain my doctorate and having no explanation whatsoever (internship sites that reject have no obligation to provide feedback). If I failed my thesis, comprehensives, or dissertation my committee would give my a reason for these failures.

The process is so burdensome in this regard that I would accept any advantage offered to me that does not clearly encroach on the rights or well-being of my fellow applicants. That is to say, I would never directly hurt another applicant in this process. But I would not hesitate to disavow strictures that threaten to hurt myself in this process.

Hmm, IsItOver, sounds like Rockland's candidates share some similarities...like coping style, lol. Well, I missed the call from Dr.Neunzig and she left me a message inviting me for an interview and telling me that Dr.Tosado would be calling me in the next few days to schedule. So... still no control...and it was 8:05 p.m. so calling back was not an option either. The message was pretty clear that I should wait for the call from Dr.T - but sweet too (Dr.Neunzig offers some great PR for that site, she's sooo nice).

Ya she told me Dr. T would call me by next Wednesday, but that is too far away!! Lets hope someone else has more details 😛

Hahahahahhahaha! Sorry, sorry. I cope with my anxiety by going to my friend's house for poker night and therefore have not been by the computer. I heard the exact same thing that you told us earlier today. She said that I would get a call next week from the director to set stuff up. I don't know anything about the actual interview days because I was too nervous to pick up the phone when I saw she was calling! Yay anxiety! It would be really awesome if we could all get the same interview day once we find out when they are.

Hehe Well I am glad you have friends to help distract you! If they are doing the same dates as Poughkeepsie than I plan to try to go on the 12th or 14th because I will already be in the area for my other interview, fyi 🙂 Finger crossed those dates aren't already filled up...

PhDee, you said you are going on the 28th, right? Was that your choice, or was that all that was left?

No, I'm going on the 19th, which was my first choice so I won't have to buy more plane tickets than absolutely necessary. I'm coming from the deep South and have to be in Michigan on the 15th. I was sad I couldn't coordinate my two New York interviews....

I'll be in New York on January 25th until the 28th. My interview at Hudson River is on January 28th... I have 2 days off while in New between interviews. Is anyone interviewing at Lincoln?

here's a question.

I got an email invite for an interview at 9pm tuesday from Human Services Inc. The email asked me to call in to schedule a time during business hours, so I called the next day (Wednesday) and I had to leave a message. I still haven't heard back from them!? Should I call back or just wait? Don't want to bother them, obviously...

wow, that's rude!!!

still haven't heard from trinitas, has anyone heard (either way) besides for jaca?

Haven't heard from Trinitas, UMDNJ-Piscataway, Lenox Hill, and Mt. Sinai Adolescent (last three have later notification dates).

good luck!!

Got a invitation to the McGuire VA this morning. One more to hear from.

Is anyone interviewing at the Bay Pines VA on 1/13 or Salt Lake City VA on 1/15? I have a rental car and hotel reserved if anyone would like to share. (Non smoking females for the room, please).

I would say I depends how badly you need to arrange your interview. For example, if you are planning cross-country travel and are trying to coordinate dates, that to me seems a reasonable excuse to call (or "bother") them again (since it has been two days). However, if you are not under travel-planning pressure, I would wait to call until Monday.

Congrats on getting an interview!

I'm interviewing there as well. I called yesterday close to closing time and spoke to the Office Manager and I have a date set, but she said she would call me back by Tuesday to confirm and set up a time. She seemed nice so I don't think it would hurt for you to call again.

Hi everyone,
I still haven't heard from the Hudson Rive (Rockland) site and don't think I can survive through the weekend without hearing. (Dramatic, I know!). I have already emailed and called yesterday, but no response. Is it appropriate to call again? If so, should I acknowledge the fact I called yesterday or just not mention that? Any advice would be much appreciated!

Quick question - last I knew Maguire wasn't APA accredited. Do you by chance know if that is still the case and are they about to be? Congratulations on your interview!!

Spoke to a current intern at Trinitas, and it sounds like they're still working through applications. Has anyone heard from Lenox Hill?

Good luck to you too!!

Thanks. They aren't APA accredited yet, but a site visit is expected in 2010. The two states I'd seek licensure in don't require APA internships. VAs (for the most part) require either APA or VA internships. So, as long as I get a VA internship, I'm OK in my states.

I can't say whether you should call or not, but Dr. N is very nice and was very apologetic for making us wait, so she porbably wouldn't hold it against you. If you do call, I def would acknowledge the other call though, so it doesn't sound like you are being insincere. Something like "I left a voice mail yesterday, but since it is getting towards the end of the business day today I wanted to call again, in case you did not get it for some reason."

Keep in mind, people heard back from the Hudson TD at like 7 and 8pm Eastern Time yesterday, so she if def putting in long hours trying to notify us all!

What do people think about rescheduling interview dates with sites?

I already agreed to some dates but it would be easier if I could swap one or two of them. Can I email a place to change the interview date after I already set it?

I would agree with IsItOver. I called her twice and in the second message I just said something like "I apologize for calling twice in a short period of time but I remain extremely interested in your site. I am hoping you can respond with my interview status" etc. etc. Go ahead and call again. I was one of the people who heard from her at 7:30 pm so it is definitely possible that she will call you late today. I'm crossing my fingers for you!!!
