2010-2011 PhD/PsyD Interview Invite thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've been offered an interview at a school that does multiple interview dates and we're able to choose which one (out of three possible) we would prefer to go to. Do you think it would matter at all which one I chose to attend?

No, it doesn't matter. Go with whatever date works bet for you. Good luck!

Anxiously waiting. I called them and they said "decisions have not been made yet, interviews will be going out this week"

😎

So I already bought bus tickets and confirmed my interview @ Penn, but CUNY's interview is the same day (AND I live in NYC). CUNY is conducting "interviews and brief group sessions", while Penn is having like a 3 day extravaganza of parties, interviews, tours, and informal meetings.

How do I tell CUNY that I am unable to attend their interview? Keep it simple like "Sorry I am unable to make it, is there a possibility I can have a phone interview?"... obviously I don't mention that I have an interview at another school, right? Or would that impress upon them the fact that I am "wanted" by another school and actually work in my favor? I don't feel like there's really any excuse, since I live in the city...😕

I had this situation come up recently with another pair of schools, and the advice I got from several people (including post-docs who have recently been on both sides of these things) has been to mention in a brief but polite e-mail that I am VERY excited to have been invited, but that I am unable to attend the interview day because I have already accepted an invitation to interview at another institution. She recommended that I mention that I was going to another interview so that it doesn't just look like I'm flaking out, going on vacation, etc. etc. That there is a legitimate good reason I can't come. I did this, asked if there were other arrangements that could be made, there were, no one was upset, and I have an in-person interview scheduled for a different day.
Good luck! And congratulations!!

Are you talking about Rutgers PhD or PsyD? PhD is up on Grad Cafe as of about 20 minutes ago. Email from POI, according to the site. Interview on Feb 11.

Does anyone know if CUNY Clinical PhD is done sending out invites?!

Hey, just wanted to let everyone out there know who applied to Suffolk that did not get the mass interview invite email.....I called the department today and they said it was a mass email but the emails are going out in several different waves and applicants can still get an interview up until February 1st.

Is the person from gradcafe who got the interview invite from Wyoming on here by any chance? If so, I'd appreciate it if you could PM me your POI. Thanks and congrats!

Rutgers psyd or phd?

That's up on Grad Cafe? PhD.
From site:

Rutgers University - New Brunswick Clinical Psychology, PhD (F11) Interview via E-mail on 25 Jan

Email from POI. Interviews February 11.

Has anyone heard anything from Univ of Virginia - Curry School of Education, clinical PhD program? According to their website, their interview dates are Feb 11 and 18. Just wondering if anyone has heard from the department about when they might extend invitations to interview. If anyone has info about their program and wouldn't mind replying either on the board or in a DM to me, I would really appreciate it!

Thanks! Also, congrats to all who have been receiving interview invitations, and good luck to those who are still waiting - there's still plenty of time and plenty more schools who haven't contacted yet!

Plus, it shows that other schools are interested in you, which often makes you a more attractive candidate.

I called and specified Rutgers Clinical Psych Phd program. However grad school admissions people LOVE to lie to me. Since when I called LIU last week they said that invites have not gone out yet, when in fact I knew they did.

It baffles me as to why they feel the need to lie to people. 😕

I'm wondering which program said that they will be reviewing and sending out next week? Since the PhD program already sent some out, is it the PsyD program that's sending out next week?

Remember to keep in mind that not all POIs invite people around the same time. For instance, my adviser has already invited all of our applicants for our interview weekend. However the other 3 professors taking students haven't even looked at their files yet.

Thanks so much for posting this! So there might still be some hope....

Ahhh slowly going crazy. Haven't said anything yet here on this thread - just watching the madness as it sucks me in!

Seriously, I want to ask you all to PM me with info on my schools or beg to know what is going on with the other 7 I am dying to hear back from.

But I'll keep waiting. . . :luck: (and clicking)

*click click click* email -> last page of this thread-> first page of this thread -> grad cafe -> rinse & repeat.

I received a call for an invite this morning (1/25) from the admissions coordinator at University of Denver for their PsyD. Interviews are being held Feb 18, 19, 25, and 26. The interview day requires both group and individual interviews.

Here's my accumulated knowledge on posted questions:

American: The interview is this Friday, so my inclination is that people who have not yet received an invite are out of luck, unfortunately.

Rutgers PhD: If the invites are coming from the POIs then it could take several days/weeks for all to go out, judging by how POIs extend invitations on their own timetables. So there's definitely still hope for you (and me)!

CUNY Clinical: not sure if they're done extending invites, but since you have to set up your own, the dates are extremely variable.

Fordham: I had the same response from the DCT about all interviews being sent out already. Oh well.

Suffolk: Glad to know that all invites are not yet out.

Drexel: The graduate assistant said that they hope to have all invites extended by the end of the week. So there's a chance... (one of my top choices :xf:)

Has anyone heard if BU or UPenn are done sending out invites?

Thanks so much to everyone who has been sharing what they've learned and congratulations to everyone who has received invites so far!

I'm not totally sure about this. I got a call from grad admissions the day after their first invites went out about something missing in my application, and he said if I could get it in within a couple of days (which I did), he would forward it on, and I could be invited for the second round of interviews later in February.

So although that was about a week ago now, and I'm starting to lose hope, I haven't crossed them off. Historically they've given additional invites as late as 2/4.

so... does anyone know if denver has sent out all invites for the child clinical phd program?

what about University of Washington child clinical?

also, if you received an invite from UCLA, Denver, or UW, can you PM me with your POI?

Thanks so much. Trying desperately to stay sane...

wow i only applied to 2 schools...only because i felt too scared to do one lol. i got an invite for one and am sure i wont be hearing from the other since i found out one of my recommenders died 🙁 so i'm sure the application is incomplete. good luck to everyone.

has anyone ever not been invited to an interview and somehow managed to get an invite from a POI? and if so, how? my top choice school has already sent out invites and I know I would be a great fit for my POI. i have excellent GRE scores and a very high GPA, plus 3 years of post-college research experience. is there anything I can do? i have my heart set on this school.

also, if I were to not be accepted, has anyone ever been successful getting feedback from POIs on why they were not interviewed/ accepted?

So I contacted Loyola-Chicago about when they would be inviting people, because it seems some status-update letters have already gone out. Here was the reply:

I can tell you that the interview dates are Feb. 11th and 25th, 2011. Invites have not yet been extended. We expect to notify applicants by early next week.

Ugh. That seems so long to wait. :meanie:

Early next week is February 1st, and they expect people to be able to plan to travel to Chicago by the 11th? And they throw in the 25th like they're being generous.

I know I'm bitter... so???:meanie:

So they sent out rejections before invites? Ouch.

I may have missed this, but are you talking about the Clinical or Counseling program?

Thanks!

I don't know if it would qualify as psychopathology; it likely isn't causing you significant distress.

You're right, definitely not meeting the "significant distress" criterion...but if it goes on much longer I think I'll fullfill the "impairment" part, as I'm having difficulty focusing on anything else. School, work, interpersonal relationships...I think it's safe to say this compulsive refreshing and voice-mail checking behavior is well on its ways to causing noted impairment in functioning across multiple domains. 😉

This thread has received over 150,000 views, 80% of which are probably from about 30 people haha (myself included).

Good job guys.

This was one of my big fears, as one of my recommenders had brain surgery the month prior to my letter due dates!! I am so happy to hear you got an invite to your other school. Don't worry, there are others of us who have applied to only a few schools. You only need one! :xf:

I recently called and was told that University of Denver's Child Clinical program has finished extending invites. I am disappointed to hear that as well.

I just got a rejection email from UNL. 🙁 First rejection, no interviews yet.

Question: What will you do/have you done in the past if you don't get in anywhere? I'm considering some options and I wondered whether more existed.

not all hope is lost if you're still waiting for American...i just got a call this afternoon for an interview on 2/7.

So they sent out rejections before invites? Ouch.

APA guidelines state that a school needs to have ways to determine if an applicant will not be accepted into the program, and when they are determined that they are to be told as soon as possible. It's for ethical purposes.

What I would do (this is my first year applying, so I don't know what is going to happen): find a job - pair or unpaid - as a research assistant and reapply next year when I have more experience and even better credentials because I continued doing research.
I am already applying to other jobs just in case.

Think about it this way: it's already been a month since Christmas... how time has flown!

thanks for the kind words. i definitely feel a sense of relief of having just applied. also my professor's death really put things in perspective for me in a sense. i am grateful that i have the one interview and if things don't work out, i still have a job and a career i can excel in if need be 🙂

I think things like this also come down to what you want to really do at the end of the day. If Penn is the basket you want to put all your eggs in, then do so. However, I only turned down two interviews last year because I was only fine with losing out on those schools. But the truth is, if CUNY was your preferred choice - you'd turn down Penn (or backwards... and some schools are more aware of this then others.... which is why not attending sometimes ruins your chances with certain schools).

Think carefully what you want to do, you might be able to attend both interviews with enough effort (assuming their actual main interview day is not the same). For example, you don't have to be at Penn's full 3 day interview. I interviewed at three universities all on the same weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Monday), attending only the main interview day and I don't regret it (one of those schools is the one I ended up attending). Bus tickets can be changed and sometimes different plans can be arranged at times (see if CUNY's POI will interview you another day that week/weekend as you live in the area etc).

Regardless, if you choose not to attend - I would agree with what another poster said and be polite and turn them down sooner than later (and I think it's fine letting them know you have another interview - it won't change your chances of acceptance without attending dramatically at that point).

its kinda sucky but i think it makes sense as well. if not, they would not be able to consider who they'd like to interview.

I do understand, its just the first instance of this I've heard, actually. From what I've seen on the forum, you just assume you didn't get accepted when the interview invites are done being sent out. I actually wish more schools would do it, kill the suspense!

I know! My stomach is tied in knots. I can't concentrate on anything and I just feel bleh. Sigh. I just want to know!

tired of the chronic stress involved in this waiting game. I felt that I am not getting much more than the one interview. So...does anyone know..whether the following schools are done sending invites? Is it ok to email POI about my status? Or I should ask the secretary instead?+pity+

A&M
Ohio U
Wisconsin Madison

Just to name a few...

The night before my first interview...at a hotel in a strange far away city! And of course I'm on the forum 🙂

I'm assuming you are talking about Texas A&M? If you are, I am waiting on them as well. I contacted the graduate admissions coordinator there last Thursday through email. She stated that the clinical program would be contacting applicants in the next 2 weeks regarding interviews. Hope this eases your stress somewhat!
