2010-2011 PhD/PsyD Interview Invite thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Me too. This week I've been rejected from 5 (some I only found out by calling to find out status) and waitlisted/alternate at 2 programs. This has not been a good week 🙁 I have 8 programs that I haven't heard anything from yet, but at this point I'm not feeling optimistic that I will be offered anymore invites.

Congrats to all those who got invites this week!

Do schools let you know if you have been waitlisted, or should I call and ask? lol

Congrats everybody on today's interview invites! Would the person who was invited to Wichita State please PM me your POI?

I hope that the interview process is going well for everyone! 🙂 If you have gotten an invite from the University of Southern Mississippi, can you please pm me your POI info? I am waiting "patiently" to hear from them. 😀

Hey all,

I got an email earlier today from my POI at the University of Kansas asking me a good time for us to have a phone interview this weekend; most likely going to be tomorrow 🙂

I can't believe I have at least another week until I hear from umkc and u of cincinnati and a few other schools. This process is absolutely grueling.

Psychedelic who is ur poi at ucinn?

Also I received a rejection from Drexel today and I never completed my application. I wonder how many out of the 550 actually completed it.

Also,

Hi! First time poster, long time reader here! I noticed on Gradcafe the other day that someone received an invite for Texas Woman's. Does anyone know if TWU is done extending invites???

Hi all,

Would the people who received invites to the Wash U in St. Louis and UC Boulder Clinical Psych programs mind sending me a PM with their POIs? Thank you!!

i thought i had a really strong app.... but haven't gotten invites yet. if the rest of my schools continue as the past have, does an MS in psych help? that's really the only thing i can see to do... I have solid GREs and GPA from an Ivy school, 1 year clinical experience, 2 years research, 2 published papers....

what else can i do?? feeling a little desperate....

Per one of my mentors, a MS/MA in EXPERIMENTAL Psych might help get into a Clinical PhD program- yes, a MS/MA in ClinPsych would be fine, but given that Experimental tends to focus more on research than clinical stuff (hence the name), it might dispel any misconception on the part of admittance committees that you are one of those warm fuzzy people/sheep who go into Clinical Psych because you "just want to help people". I'm looking at MS programs now, myself.

Thanks Lisa44201. Yea, that's what I'll be looking into now.... I'm just not too fond of the idea of spending the money not knowing what the ultimate outcome will be.... but I think it might be worth it, and I know I'm ready for more school (I'd be a student forever if I could 🙂).

In the meantime, still waiting, and formulating back-ups....

Anyone hear anything from Texas A&M University (school psychology)?

hi there,

i saw that some rejections went out up for UVA "psychology" on gradcafe. does anyone know if this was for the clinical (not curry) program? i think it might have been for cognitive, social, or developmental, but just wondering...

thanks!

I tried to resist the urge to ask for POI info, but I'm giving in. Could the lucky people with Univ of Denver (PhD), Univ of Delaware (PhD), or Univ of Rochester (PhD) invites message me their POI please?

On a side note, I live in San Diego, so if anyone with UCSD/SDSU invites has any questions about the area or the schools they can feel free to message me.

Wow...based on those stats, I'm really surprised you have not heard anything yet, that sounds like a really strong application! How many schools did you apply to, and how competitive are the programs?

Here's my two cents regarding getting an MS: I can only speak for myself, but having an MS has made a huge difference the second time around.

My first time, I applied to eleven schools, all clinical programs, and got two invites to interview (one was later canceled by my POI as it turned out she was not going to be teaching the next year due to personal reasons). So I only really got one interview, from which I was high wait-listed, then offered admission into the MS program when a spot did not open up. I enrolled into this program.

This time, I applied to sixteen programs, twelve clinical, four counseling. I got my fourth invite to interview last night (two are clinical, two are counseling)zas. I got my first official rejection this morning (from a counseling program); I have been unofficially rejected at four others based on reading this site and gradcafe. This leaves seven that I have not heard from. Obviously, I have no idea if I will fare better in terms of actually getting accepted, but thus far, things are looking a lot better.

So what was actually different this time around? Beside the MS itself, not much, and of those things that were different, they were primarily a function of being in the MS program anyway, not things I did in addition to it. I had received an graduate assistant position and had more research experience (not that much more, as I had had a pretty goodly amount as an undergrad). I suppose my letters of recommendation may be better than last time (2 out of the 3 are from my current program, one recommendation came from my undergrad institution). I'm doing a practicum now as part of the program, and previously I did not have any clinical experience. Of course, my SOP was different as well, and I applied to five more schools and gave counseling programs a shot this time. A lot didn't change: I did not take the GRE again; my pub status has not changed much [I'm in the process of getting ready to submit an article in a few months, but no actual publications. The caliber and competitiveness of the programs to which I applied is similar. My research interests are a little more refined, perhaps, but essentially identical. So in conclusion, it seems like the MS (and everything that goes along with it) made all the difference.

Now, I can not speak to what kind of Masters degree will serve this purpose the best. Mine is a general clinical, but other posters have recommended experimental, which I think is sound advice, especially if you're more interested in Clinical Science or really really research heavy programs. Regardless, if things don't work out this time, an MS is something I would definitely consider. I have to reiterate, though, I would be very surprised if you don't get a couple invites given what you've shared about your app. I would not give up just yet. Hang in there!

I applied to University of Denver and I am curious to see what the GRE scores of the students who were given invites were. Thanks 😀

hi-Im not sure if this is the right place to post this but I was wondering are counseling programs easier than clinical to get acceptance to? I mean this in trms of research experience and GRE scores. Aso, with a phd in counseling could you counseling in a hospital setting?

Thank You!

Anyone hear from U of Nevada Reno???
According to the website info, invitations are issued between Jan 27-29 via phone, but it seems that no one has received a phone call yet.. 🙁

I'll second what another poster said--that sounds like a solid application. If you opt to forego the MA/MS route in favor of working in a lab and re-applying next year, perhaps you could look into diversifying your chosen programs? I can say, without a doubt, that your stats are stronger than were mine.

I'm waiting on UNR as well. I saw that time table thing on their website too- if you look at the bottom of the page it says "last updated Dec. 30 2009." So I think that may be valid for last year. And it looks like from last years stats that someone got an invite 2/2 even given that info. So I think we're still good for now:xf:
Good luck to you :luck:

Thank you so much.
Hope we will hear good news from UNR soon! Good luck to you as well!

Hi Guys -

I tried for a couple hours to edit list to make it smaller by editing out unnecessary details (ex. U vs. University) and then paste it into thread. However, when I try to update the post I get a message that it is too many characters even after editing out everything possible! I give up for tonight, but here is the info on the 4 new ones that I wasn't able to fit in the 1st post (with their new details):

U of Akron: received 1/28 via email from admissions chair. Interview 2/25
Syracuse U (school): received 1/28 via email from POI. Interviews 2/17 & 2/18.
UNC Greensboro: received (1/5 via call from POI for phone interview on 1/7) 1/28 via email from POI. Interviews 2/25 or 2/28.
Case Western Reserve U: received via phone call/email from POI. Interviews 2/18 or 2/25.
SUNY Albany: received 1/21, 1/23, 1/29 via call/email from POI. Interview on 2/12.

Hey everyone,

been lurking on the site for a little bit, and actually went through most of the earlier pages on the thread today....

This website is truly amazing, and this thread is something that I am sure has helped countless applicants, students, and more in their quest for grad school.

I myself have applied to 7 schools, and gotten two interviews (Emory and Maryland 😀), and am waiting to hear from one school (South Florida)

Of the schools I applied to that I have not heard from, but have inquired as to whether any more invites have been extended and been told that there are no more invites (Upenn, Penn st, Florida St, Umiami), I am most saddened at Penn state, but am very excited about my opportunities that await me.

Very excited to join the large pool of applicants, and wish you all the best of luck in your quests.

P.S: i wanted to tell/ask other applicants to USF about an email i reserved today from the school. It was not in terms of invites, but the mail did say that they should be done with reviewing and begin extending invites "in a week or so." The email itself was about some fellowship, but did want to see if I could provide some bit of information to anyone out there waiting from USF

Good luck everyone!

I would suggest splitting the list into two posts, with the second post holding all of the non-Ph.D. clinical programs. You can just edit the 5th post in this thread (which you authored), and paste the schools in there. I would probably include a note at the top of the first post indicating that is what you have done and what post to find the rest of the schools in. Hope that helps and thanks for all of your hard work!

Going on numbers, I'm sure made it past the first cut(s). I'm guessing the answer, if there is one, lays in your personal statement and interests. Are you applying to the right schools/mentors and sufficiently explaining your match with each program? This is crucial.

In short, it depends on the programs you're applying to. As a generalization, however, the admissions statistics at Counseling Psych PhD programs are less daunting. That said, several Counseling Psych programs require a master's in counseling or related field. And...if the school is in a desirable metropolitan area, it will be just as difficult to get in.

The main difference between Clinical and Counseling PhD programs is the emphasis. Clinical programs tend to focus on psychopathology while counseling programs focus more on "healthy" populations and personal adjustment, vocations, health, etc. Both programs will enable you to become a licensed psychologist, and will allow you to work in in the same places, especially if your program and internship are APA approved. More clinical PhDs do internships in hospital settings, while more counseling PhDs do internships in college counseling centers.

Deciding between the two, consider the research and emphasis you're drawn to. I applied mostly to counseling PhD programs because I liked their holistic approach and emphasis on healthy functioning, rather than pathology. I also thought they offered a better balance of research and practice than clinical PhD and PsyD programs (which tend to be one or the other).

Has anyone heard from Northwestern in the Weinberg College (on the Evanston campus)?

I've seen a lot of posts about Northwestern on the Chicago campus but nothing on here or Gradcafe about the Weinberg College program.

I think it's likely that they have already invited people since their applications were due Dec. 1, but I'm still holding out hope.

Please let me know if you have heard anything. Thanks and good luck!!

An RA who worked in my lab had a similar experience. She was Ivy-League educated, working at another Ivy as an RA for 2 years, had several publications, and a good GPA and GRE score. She only got 1 interview and was not offered a spot at that university.

Later on she wrote to the POI who had interviewed her to inquire why she wasn't chosen, and he told her that a) her interests did not seem focused enough and b) her interests did not seem to fit perfectly with his.

I did not look at your application but I think it's possible that your application might not have made a strong case for why you were perfect for the programs and the labs to which you were applying. Especially in the programs with strong mentorship models, the potential PIs want somebody who will be contributing a lot to their labs specifically, so relevant interests and experience are extremely important.

That said, it is still early and I know several people who got into their top choice schools last-minute or off the wait-list. Perhaps some of your schools haven't invited people yet and others may invite a second round of interviews. If you're invited anywhere you can elaborate on your interests in person and make your good fit clear if that is something that was lacking in your personal statement.

That's just my opinion. I hope it's helpful.

Good luck!!

Hi everyone- I've been poking around this site for awhile, but the 2011 waiting game finally made me cave and get an account so I can post. I'm mostly wondering if people have heard from WUSTL and UT Southwestern. I've figured out that BU has rejected me from previous posts on here, and it seems like UF will be sending out invites next week (correct me if i'm wrong here!)

I saw that people had posted in the past looking for POI information about some of the schools that I'm interviewing at. Feel free send me a PM if other SDNers haven't gotten back to your questions yet. [Kent, Penn State, Northwestern, SDSU/UCSD, Drexel]

Congrats to everyone for getting this far in the process, whether you have interviews or not. It takes a special/crazy/committed type of person to even get through the application at some of these programs!

ps. my programs are all clinical psych with an emphasis on neuropsych

I just wanted to thank all you guys for your thoughts/insights. Unfortunately I'm not sure it was the personal statement either - I have a pretty clear research focus that I thought I defined clearly in my SOP, and thought I "matched" well with the POIs to which I applied....

I think I was a bit too narrow with the schools to which I applied, and the next go-round (if there is one), I will certainly widen my reach. I didn't really have a "back-up" school so to speak, not that there really is one. I'm still waiting on a few... but hope is fleeting... trying to make other plans for next year, and not sure if they have funding for me to stay at my current RA job (which is also at an (different) Ivy... :scared:). (not that Ivy is the only way - just happens to be where I live)

and I do think when all is said and done, I will contact several of my POIs, who I have been in contact with previously, to ask what was missing.....

Could the person who got the interview invite for UNC greensboro PM me their POI? Also, was the e-mail a mass e-mail for a direct e-mail from your POI?

Thank you so much

phdhopeful2011, Yes, on average it's easier to get accepted to counseling programs than clinical programs at least in terms of GRE scores though I'm not sure about research experience. There is a thread somewhere on SDN with information about average GRE scores for counseling vs. clinical programs, and the average is lower for counseling programs. As far as whether you could work in a hospital setting with a counseling PhD, I'm not sure. I think it would depend on the hospital. I read somewhere, though, that Counseling psychologists work in the same general settings as Clinical psychologists, though I'm not sure how reliable that source was. Hope this helps!

How do we get research experience? I went to a Christian college with no graduate programs, so the only research I've done is my senior thesis. My application is strong in GPA and GRE, so I'm assuming my research experience is what's taking so long.

So: How important is research experience?
and
How do I get it?

Woops, I didn't see this post when I responded to the same question. I agree with what Psychman84 said. I think we basically both said the same thing, but he provided more info! Oh well.

Hi SpiderSilk,

Certainly something like a M.S. in Experimental Psychology will grant you research experience. You can also seek out opportunities post-graduation at places that do have a graduate department, such as universities in your local area, that you can volunteer at if you're going to be working at the same time. You can start by looking up faculty that have research you may be interested in and simply emailing them and offering them your time, emphasizing that you want to volunteer to gain research experience.

There are also research assistant positions that become available and publicized, usually in the spring, at institutions throughout the country-- including universities, hospitals, treatment programs, etc. These are often 1-2 year commitments and are paid, and many of them welcome applicants with a bachelors degree.

Hope this is helpful!

I feel you on this. I have my MS and supervise a randomized clinical trial R01 project for the last 4 years. In addition to publications and grants, I have a solid GPA and GRE scores. So, I have been surprised not to hear anything yet. So far only one rejection though, and my top four schools haven't sent out any invites yet. I still think there is hope!!!

I haven't heard a thing. I've also been checking the "view decision" link on their website regularly, and nothing. I figured it was a long shot anyway given how many apps they get and how competitive the program is, but getting that official rejection notification (I think) is nice (one less website to check everyday).

Driving me even crazier: could they have come up with better names to distinguish the two programs than "Weinberg" and "Feinberg?!"

How do you search for such RA positions?

I noticed that on gradcafe Virginia Consortium was listed as sending out rejections via mail. I was wondering if anyone has gotten an acceptance from them?

Interview invites will be anytime now, and there's 2 interview dates in February. I don't believe they do straight acceptance without interviews.

BTW-- I can answer questions about the area if you have any 🙂

Does anyone know if interview questions for PysD clinical psychology schools are the same as/similar to questions asked for PhD schools (minus, I am assuming, researched focus heavy questions)? If anyone has experience interviewing for PsyD programs, sample questions would be great to hear!

Each school may have a different approach. My interview questions 2 weeks ago were clinician based questions. Some testing questions came up but nothing in depth. I was asked about what I knew about the program, career goals and a lot of restating of what was on my SOP.I was asked what I know about Clinical Psych, What populations do I hope to work with, why I wanna work with these people. I have a Masters so they wanted to know why I wanted a Psy.D. Just prepare yourself adequately. If you already have an idea of the types of questions that you may be asked, you will be confident when interviewed.

Hi alittleone,

thanks for the info on virginia consortium... i havent received a rejection letter from them (yet)! I hope when I here from them its for an interview! 🙂

Hi guys -

I'm still trying to figure out how to make everything fit into the first post. I PMed the list manager from last year since it looks like he/she was able to make them all fit, so hopefully I can get some clarification and we can go back to only have one place to update/look 🙂 I will include the couple new additions in tomorrow's update...

Can the lucky person who got the UNCG invite please pm poi info? I would really appreciate it. I'm pretty disappointed that I didnt get an invite there. I thought I had a really good match. Does anyone know if they are done giving out invites?

Try and recruit Student2Life's 2nd post on this thread. Perhaps he will allow you to send him the updates and he can start posting them in that 2nd post's space.

what we can do too, is delete the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th post... i'll see if I can get rid of mine.

Or, just jump to your second post ClinChildPsy13 and post a note in caps at the top of the first post stating that some of the list(s) are continued in your second post. Then there is no need to delete anything.

Perhaps move the Clinical School/PsyD list there.
