How are all you out-of-staters looking for housing? I'm coming from Cali and would like to find a place in a decent area near the subway line that goes to the school. Also, I'm planning on doing the prematriculation program, so I was hoping to move in by June 13, but I would be willing to move in anytime no later than early July.

What is the prematriculation program?

I'd suggest just all the housing databases (craigslist, amongst others)...and possibly even getting a broker if you need one to do the majority of the legwork for you.

Cali represent! I'm planning on flying out there mid June to check out apts and hopefully sign a lease by early July (so I can get in-state tuition next yr). Currently looking at park slope. One thing I don't like is how most apts got hardwood floors... and I prefer to have carpet. Anyone know of any apts in gated communities instead of condo styles?

You want most apartments to be hardwood in NY; I'd imagine the carpet would be absolutely murdered.

Unfortunately, there are no "gated" communities that I know of in Brooklyn or Manhattan.

Park slope is a great place to live. Also, if you can live anywhere along the 2/3 line along flatbush (ie Bergen or Grand Army stops), that's definitely optimal.

I can hopefully field any questions anyone may have about the school. I, myself, am transplanted from CA.

@disorder, In your opinion, what is a good/reasonable price for a studio/1br near park slope? How much are you currently paying and can you give us a rough estimate of how much are current DS students paying?

i would check http://www.citi-habitats.com/ (for reference, or you could use them if you're willing to pay a broker fee) or http://streeteasy.com/. and if you really want the best price, i would just go with craigs list; you just have to be careful.

rent in P&S can get pricey. i would say if you're looking for a 1BR, you'll be probably paying close to ~$1500. i am sure you can find cheaper if you hunt for it.

i live in the city, so prices are more expensive.

Anyone looking for roommates? Thinking of getting a place around park slope with one or two roommates. PM me if you're interested.

Got my FA offer. All loans 🙁 . Gonna withdraw. Hope someone here gets the spot. Good luck, guys!

I contacted the financial aid office which told me that grants/scholarships are not awarded yet. The school gets a certain amount of money every year to give grants/scholarships but they haven't received that amount of money yet. So initially, everyone gets loans. If they think you are eligible for grants/scholarships, they will ask you for more information and then tell u info about grants.

Thanks for that info. I guess I should hold out a bit longer. I got an email today asking for my parents'tax returns. I guess this is for the need-based aid.

does anyone else think it's kind of weird for the school to expect all of the people on their alternate list to take the AHA BLS course, even though we aren't guaranteed entry into their school?

yes, please withdraw from the alternate list 😛.

Good luck to every one I just withdrew hope it goes to one of you guys! I loved NYC but being closer to home is cool too 🙂

Hey all,

We (three rising MS3s) are looking for a 4th roommate for our apartment on 50 East Plaza street (at Grand Army Plaza). It's a great location near the park, the Brooklyn public library, museum, and botanical gardens. Additionally, we live within 2 blocks of the 2,3,Q, and B trains. The neighborhood is safe and commuting to school is quick and easy.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=50+pl...rooklyn,+Kings,+New+York+11238&gl=us&t=h&z=16

The room for rent is large, with two walk in closets, and it's own bathroom. The living room, kitchen, and dining room are also big and wonderful. The building itself is great, with laundry machines and a bike-rack in the basement.

The room will be ready starting August 1st.

The rent is $1350.

If interested please e-mail [email protected] and we can talk more/ set up a time to see the place.

Thanks!!

The prematriculation program is a 6 week full time program where they basically prepare you for what med school will be like. I was under the impression that it's offered to everyone, but I think it just be a URM thing. Not entirely sure about that.

I'm looking to get into a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment in Park Slope/Prospect Heights(near the subway that goes to school) where I can share a room with someone, to keep costs down. Ideally, I'd like to pay under $1000.

Also, I'd prefer to move in by June 13th, which is when the summer prematriculation program starts (although I'd be willing to skip the program altogether if it interferes too much with setting up living arrangements). I need to have my name on a lease by late June/early July to get instate status for MSII.

If this sounds like something you're looking for as well, let me know and we can start looking for places online.

Thanks for your info! I wasn't offered any type of pre-matric program, definitely sounds like a cool program!

Good luck and see you in the Fall (or maybe earlier!)

I just withdrew from my acceptance here. I wish you all the best of luck.

I'm happy to hear you guys are getting HAPPY NEWS on Friday the 13th!! 😀

*here's to being classmates in the Fall* woot! 🙂

Congrats on the acceptances! Can't wait to meet everyone in a few months! 😀

SOOOO happy for you man, and thanks too, cuz I really hope to become your classmate. Anyway, take your time to celebrate alright? YOu deserve it

Thanks! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you guys!

I got a phone call on Friday at around noon from Ilana Levine. She said she was calling the whole alternate list to make sure they were still interested. Did anyone else get that? I thought it was kind of weird and am not sure if it was a good sign or bad!

That's what she told me verbatim and i got accepted a week later.

Fireitup-- I just checked my admissions checklist and see a spot for PAY NOT under acceptance deposit (due may 1-15). I have not received the acceptance yet, and it is a Sunday so I cannot call, so do you think I will be binded to this May 15 (today) deadline?

Congrats on the acceptance btw, I hope that I have the same luck as you!!!

Congrats, you got in. I'm sure you'll get the letter in the mail tomorrow. Just pay it asap and send in your acceptance reply form when you get it in the mail.

Just to add on to what others were saying and to give added hope that the wait list indeed does move, I also got the package -- on Friday morning via snail mail. I was completely shocked. Ilana Levine called me as well on Monday to ask if I was still interested in being on the wait list. (Though I didn't understand why, now it makes sense!) 🙂 Best of luck to all! Patience is rewarded, so don't give up hope!

I got the pay now button too! no fed ex package! am i in too?@!?@!😀😱

Congrats to everyone that got in!! I got the call on Thursday, but I haven't received any package yet either. I also have the "pay now" button, but it doesn't actually allow me to pay. Xadorus, are you able to pay or have you not attempted to yet?

yeah i paid already they have to accept me now...unless this is a cruel joke and I just wasted 100 bucks...... used firefox, google chrome seems to not work.

I just paid via firefox. I should've thought of that earlier, haha, thanks! ....so now we just sit by our windows and stalk the mail men...

For those that paid a while ago via credit card, has your card been charged yet? I paid back in early April, but was never charged. The office has received it since there is a green check next to that item on my admissions checklist...strangeness. 😕

Ahh I hope im not wrong and gave u guys false hope.

It's taking me forever to get my parents' tax info to the school. As of today I'm still holding my acceptance to Downstate and one other school. I'd make my decision if only I knew what my Downstate FA situation would be.

Any advice?

Does anyone have any idea what kind of FA I should expect? Do you think the FA office is open to discussing this over the phone?

Probably all loans unless you have a lot of need.

So I didn't pay when it said PAY NOW because I did not receive any acceptance yet...but now it won't let me log in 🙁

If you're seriously considering attending DS, I'd call the Admissions Office just to make sure you know what the situation is..although I'm sure their office is swamped with work today!

Probably all loans. The FA office MAY be able to give you guidance (talk to Christina, one of the FA counselors)...but they also may just tell you that the school will not know until summer how much "aid" they can expect to give out.

Hey trio, any idea how much on campus housing is? I'm most probably gonna move in off campus, though, but if places are too costly i might stick with on campus housing.
