Ive been to DS many times, worked there 1 summer and also kings county 1 summer. The conditions of KS is not very good but thats y there are stuff to see =\

I'm kind of disappointed in the type of loans i got. ~85% in unsubsidized and grad plus loans...

I assume you mean KCH? I'll give you that one...it's not the most flashy state-of-the-art hospital around, but you learn rather quickly at this school that it doesn't matter what the hospital looks like, but what goes on inside it. When it's crunch time and someone comes in with a rifle shot to the chest, or a 5 story fall, or a stab in the neck, the docs there snap into action so fast it's incredible. They do amazing work.

In your second semester, there will probably be an elective offered in the ER. I suggest you take it, even if youre not interested in emergency medicine, just so you can see some hardcore medicine being practiced.🙂

DEFINITELY doing this.

I just checked my checklist and I have a whole slew of fresh red X's. I'm still on the Hold list and am trying not to read too much into this; the mantra is "It doesn't mean anything."

*Did anyone else on the Hold list find the same stuff on their checklist?
*Can someone who's been here before confirm that I should essentially pretend it isn't there, thereby not getting my hopes up and maintaining my sanity?

I haven't checked my checklist in weeks (maybe even months), but mine too has all the X's for "accepted/alternate list applicants". I guess it could mean we're getting upgraded from "Hold" to "Alternate." Who knows.....

Hi all!

I just got accepted to SUNY Downstate and I'm about 99% sure I will be attending.
I was wondering if anyone is looking for a female roommate. I am an OOS from California and I am planning on living off campus so that I can get residency status for the upcoming year.
PM me if you're interested

I am also on the hold list, and I too have all the red X's. I haven't checked my checklist in a while but I did check it a few times AFTER I was put on hold and I never saw this before! *Fingers crossed*

I just received a UPS Next Day Air envelope. I was on hold, so I assumed this was an acceptance. Luckily I wasn't planning on attending DS, but the "URGENT" letter was just to let me know I'm on the alternate list. I just figured I'd post this in case anyone is really hoping for an acceptance and gets this big envelope - don't get your hopes up, it may not be anything. I'm kind of disappointed they felt the need to waste tax money on next day air just to tell me I'm on the alternate list too.

I just got that mail today too. What's our chance of actually getting accepted at this point?

Thanks for that info- what does your checklist look like?

No idea, I really haven't been following this thread but maybe someone else knows.

My "initial review" section is all green, and then the "accepted/alternate list MD" and "student health accepted/alternate list" checklists are all red. Considering I haven't done any of those things, that makes sense.

got the UPS package w the alternate list info yesterday... only to get called 3 hours later and be accepted. probably gonna go

Which facebook group is this? I'm in a group but it only has 38 people in it.

finally got accepted into the facebook group, 107 already!!! that's a lot

Which facebook group are we talking about? I'm in one but there's only 38 people in it? There are multiple groups?

Downstate, being the Obi-Wan to my Leia, is my only hope. Just got the alternate forms in the mail and am trying REALLY hard not to get my hopes up because I'm pretty sure my chances are still slim.

We shall see!

Is the alternate list at this point a decent chance of acceptance, or is it a waste of time to remain on?

Also received the UPS air delivery about being placed on the alternate list. Was previously put on hold. :xf:

Was everyone on the hold list just moved to the alternate list? What's the point of a hold list then lol?

Prolly needs to be approved by whoever made the group

Yeah probably, they totally redid the facebook group thing so I'm totally lost. 🙁

All I know is I can "add people" to the group if they're on my facebook friends list. I look forward to "meeting" you! 😛

I've been seeing lots of "Downstate vs. [Less Regarded School in Boring Area that Costs Twice as Much]" threads floating around this website. Usually citing "bad vibes" as a reason. What gives? When we get here we need to step up the interview courtship game and lay those questions to rest. Or should we just let people who care about "vibes" make their own poor choices.

Lol, the admissions office just has to pick a few of us to do tours and smash those "negative vibes". I know I can do it! 🙂

Dude def do the tours. I must have done upwards of 20 tours for them and lemme tell you...when you are a good tourguide, it's an art 😎

I'm interested! I know I want to get an off campus apt just need a roommate that goes to Downstate too.

Oooo...how do we get involved in doing that? I'd love to rep the Out of state kids...give them some "hope" that an OOS kid will enjoy himself at Downstate! 🙂

I interviewed twice at DS, and both times the tourguides sucked. I can see why people get a bad vibe.

Admissions will send out an email at the start of second semester to see who's interested. You'll get a couple of tours and will also do the accepted student shadowing program. You get a free lunch with each tour/shadow you do so it's a good deal.

::is all about the free food::

I'm def gonna do that. Tourguides needed more enthusiasm!!!!

I just looked at the computer requirements. Why can't we use wireless keyboards and mice?

"Wireless keyboards and mice are not acceptable for use with tablet or standard PCs."

Thanks for the info Vulcan! I'm excited for 2nd semester now, haha! I was at Shadow a Student, which was pretty fun!

did anyone get their housing assignments yet? they said they would start emailing them on june 7th but i've gotten nothing.

Can someone post the figures for cost of attendence that was given to us at the Interview? I'm trying to decide between this school and another, and I've misplaced the sheet that compares COA for Instate and OOS figures.

Thanks so much =D

So... i am trying to make a decision soon between this school and University of Toledo. I thought there was gonna be a huge difference in cost of attendence... but there's actually only a 35 k difference between the two..mostly attributed to living expenses.

Did anyone else get the same "we're miserable here" vibe from the medical students?
I want to match back to Cali.... but I'm not sure which of these two give me a better shot at doing so.

the req. seem pretty arbitrary, I wouldn't worry too much about it. @ LostinOhio: I found the med students to be super chill and less "high and mighty" compared to other schools. That's one of the reasons why I really loved it.

We are not miserable we are awesome!!! Where is everyone getting this vibe from???

I think the fact that they were scared for their lives after getting off the subway and going onto Lennox Rd has affected their perception.

I have no idea. I visited once pre-application cycle, was there for my interview, and came for the research/revist and have never gotten the vibe that anyone is miserable. In fact, quite the opposite. Maybe it's b/c I'm from NYC already? 😕

And the "old" facilities is a cop out excuse if you ask me, the anatomy lab is the nicest I've seen on the interview trail, and the classrooms are plain but just fine. Come on people, NY is an old city, not everything will be bright and shiny. Think of it as nostalgia. 😛

Anyway, I've been stalking this thread like mad, excited to meet everyone soon!

Like the below posters will say, I too never got a "we are miserable" vibe here. From the M1s to the M2s, everyone seemed really "peachy" and happy to talk to me on both interview day and shadow a student day!

I'm too just as lost as you are--no idea why everyone is saying "bad vibes" from Downstate.---maybe from the area, but that's not the medical school student body. The admission office and current students all seemed pretty happy and relaxed to me--they were all so welcoming! 🙂

hi

Since you guys are asking about it, the "bad vibe" definitely comes from the run down environment. The buildings/hospital are obviously older, which gave me a bit of a dreary feeling. Even worse, the neighborhood is terrible, and although that has nothing to do with med school, it's a factor. I'm from NY and lived in Queens for a bit (and loved it) so It's not just that I'm not used to Brooklyn/NYC. Like it or not, newer facilities, green grass, and a sunny day (I saw DS when it was raining) will give people a better vibe, justified or not. My bad vibe had nothing to do with the students, however.
