I'm not sure I would classify research or shadowing as interests, I really think they mean things that you do on your free time that is unrelated to medicine. For me, I talked about swimming and writing as hobbies. I think they want to see what about you makes you particularly suited for medicine aside from the usual volunteering/clinical experience/research. Could be wrong but that's the impression I got from my interview as well.


As an aside, I just interviewed here and had a tremendously positive experience. I liked their campus and the city of Syracuse itself, the faculty were nice, the students were friendly, and the admissions office was great. I was a little apprehensive to learn about their grading system (something like Honors, High Pass, Pass, Fail if I remember correctly, but not sure) but after talking to the students it doesn't seem to make people cutthroat and rank-happy. I was also very impressed with the clinical skills lab, which was large and seemed to be brand new. Hoping for an acceptance here come October 15!

I was there on Monday as well haha. I was one of the few out of state applicants.

OGMD, they said the first decisions will come out Oct. 15th by email and that they usually take 2-3 weeks to make a decision. So, you wont have to wait all that long!

Hey for anyone who already interviewed here, what hotel did you stay at? Did the free shuttle service take you to and from the airport/interview?

I stayed at the Maplewood Inn and I highly recommend it. The shuttle drove me from the airport to the hotel, and then to and from campus that evening, as well as back to campus in the morning for the interview. I ended up getting a ride from a fellow applicant but the hotel did say they would pick me up from the school and drive me directly to the airport as well.

The hotel was inexpensive but nice, and has a free printer in the lobby which was useful for checking in for my flight. The free breakfast was also better than expected, as they had some 711-type sausage egg and cheese on a bagel.

My essays were.about half a page each in length

Maplewood is really great. Really nice hotel for the money, and best breakfast that I've seen so far. There is also a shuttle from the hotel to the interview (I remember one of the other interviewees took it).

So where exactly do I pay the fee to the secondary? Usually they love asking for your credit card number but I can't find anything. Do I have to mail a check/money order?

I'm not sure exactly what I want to do yet. It seems like everyone with great stats is getting put on hold..I know it's getting late in the cycle and my horrible MCAT of 24 isn't going to help. I had no intention of applying until I received a response saying that my score was low but "[FONT=Calibri, Verdana, Helvetica, Arial]but not so far off that I would discourage you from applying."

Any suggestions?

Hey guys, kind of dumb but I can't seem to find the application status on my page.

- I got the e-mail saying my application is complete.
- When I log into my page, all it says under Processed Applications is: my Fall 2011 link and under Application Preference it just says, "Not entered" . What does that even mean, or does that mean I'm missing something?

During the interview, they were clear that they accept update letter and im sure it applies to on hold. However, I believe they don't review on hold until December

I think the photo upload works with IE but had issues with either Chrome or FF.

The essays should be as long as you want them. Answer the question fully but don't ramble or use filler.

They didn't mention anything about the schedule. I assume they just want to see which classes you're taking this semester, since the AMCAS was tentative.

That's better than having you keep your hopes up with a waitlist that never moves....

Anyways I'm surprised they sent you an email so soon because A) most schools wait till after the 15th to send any post-interview correspondence; B) I believe last year all post-interview rejections came via snail mail.

At the interview they stated that the feedback they had from students was that they preferred email communication, so they were going to be using that instead of snail mail for rejections.

Oh that's interesting. It seems that most post-interview rejections are sent in the mail so it's nice that Upstate is on top of things and sends emails.

Just as an FYI for anything interviewing in the next week or so:
We've been having pretty heavy rain for the past week and it's not supposed to let up. It's COLD, bring coats, umbrella, rain boots etc. Specially for campus tours!

Oh, and if you have a few extra minutes in the city, try to make it to either what-The-Crepe or Funk 'n' Waffle. At Funknwaffle, the brownie waffle is probably the best thing ever!
They're both on in the alleyway behind Marshall st. which is like a block from Upstate.

If anyone needs directions or needs to know anything about the area, let me know!

When I interviewed (first week) they said the adcom would meet this week, but they didn't mention the frequency nor the cutoff date. Also not all members are present at every meeting.

I was done with my final interview by 1:45...I saw some of the other interviewees leaving shortly after. My flight left at 5:20pm that day, and I was able to go back to my host's place and change....I think you should be fine with a 5pm flight!

I stayed at the Gennessee Grande, which has a special rate for students interviewing ($98 a night -- still expensive, but it's a really really nice hotel). the GG also provides free shuttle service to and from your interview, which is *awesome.*

That sounds super and all, but I called in today and the admissions counselor said that a decision has been made on my app and decisions are emailed every Tuesday so I should want for the email. And I said "well Tuesday was two days ago so when should I except an email?" and he said "next Tuesday". Then I asked him if he could just tell me my decision and he said no he cannot due to confidentiality laws.

So I am now assuming that I am rejected because all "pre-interview hold" emails were sent on the 5th. And if anyone has received an interview then it should say so on their status page. Does it also say whether you are rejected on the status page?

no, it will just say "decision made"; if that's the case, it's more than likely that the decision that was made was not a favorable one since you are already on pre-interview hold...sorry.

srry i misread what you wrote. there are only three options for you at this point: rejection, hold, or interview invite. To my knowledge, only rejection will say "decision made" as your status, as far as I know.
