true. if you picked temple univ hospital as your first choice and you were accepted, then you'll get your first choice.
 
Does anyone know if they're still interviewing for acceptances or if it's just for waitlist spots at this point?
 
Hello

I am new to this medical school process. I have been accepted to Temple
and have paid my deposit as well as did that background check thing.

What is the next step? I havent received any big package from them. If I decide to go to Temple what should I do now? Tell them that I decided to go. I know there is that May deadline on deciding on one school thing.

But if any medical school students would tell me the next step of this process that would be nice.

Same here...all they told me was I would hear soon. Submitted my FAFSA back in January. I feel like temple is so very quiet, whereas I get an email from Downstate once a week...

I am still under review too. I wish they would just tell us if we are rejected or not so we don't have to keep checking our status.
 
Yay, congrats everyone who will be joining the Temple family in the Fall! I can't wait to get started.
I am already beginning to look at housing in Philly, mainly because I (a Cali resident) am clueless about the area.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to which areas I should focus on? Do we need a car for the first two years? I'm looking to commute to campus via septa or other public transportation if possible.

At Second Look, they said most students live in Manayunk (which is NOT the suburbs like they kept saying) and Center City (and some a little farther south like maybe Bella Vista?). As far as taking Septa to campus, it will be a lot easier from Center City, because you can just hop on the broad street line up to Broad and Erie and walk down a few blocks. If you lived in Manayunk, it would probably be a lot easier to have a car, hop on the Boulevard to Broad Street, then drive south a mile to campus. I think you'd have to take the regional rail into CC then hop on the broad street line from Manayunk. It would be a lot quicker to drive it.
 
Hey thanks! Yeah I stayed in Center City when I interviewed there it October. It seems like a decent place to live. I recall there were a lot of stores, coffee shops, and restaurants within walking distance. And commuting was convenient via septra. Getting off of the Eerie station was scary however. I realized I wasn't walking through the friendliest of neighborhoods.
I hope the crime rate is relatively low, and rent relatively affordable. =]

any predictions on waitlist movement this year? i know they got record number of apps and from this forum it sounds like a lot of people are definitely accepting their offer... i'm so bummed 🙁 🙁 🙁

i'm a little surprised that they don't reject post-interview! there must be so many people on that waitlist; it almost seems pointless...
 
All I remember from interviewing is that the WL is supposedly ranked but they don't tell students where they rank, and that most of the movement happens in May and June.

I think with Temple's tuition being so high, especially for OOS students, having such a large WL isn't a horrible idea. At least in the past, it looks like more than half of the people that interviewed were eventually accepted. Check out the Fall 2008 admission statistics

Frank, you're right, Temple's smack dab in the middle of one of Philly's worst 'hoods, but Temple's police force does a really good job keeping the actual campuses very safe. Erie is pretty close to campus, and if you're commuting when the majority of the students are coming in, you could probably travel in a group. If you wind up staying late, you can request a security escort to the train station. You won't get any argument from me about preferring not to have to do that, though. I'm going to be commuting in from the burbs and driving.

IMO, CC's generally safe, and I'm sure if you have a roommate your rent will be okay. It would probably be cheaper in manayunk, but then, yeah, you'd probably want a car.

So I got the correspondence sent status last week and today my letter arrived. It says I am on the "continuing candidates list" - I just wanted to confirm that this is just the normal waitlist right? it's kind of weird cause it never actually says "waitlist" anywhere in the letter.

Seems like every school has their own term for it... alternate list, waitlist, and now continuing candidate list LOL.
 
did you first get a change in your status online to "correspondence sent"? i'm still waiting to hear pre-interview, too, but haven't gotten any e-mails...

Yeah, as far as we've heard in this thread that's their term for waitlist.

Rejected pre-interview, too. Sent to my email couple hrs ago, and my status says "correspondence sent."

did anyone else receive an interview invite yesterday as opposed to the less than exciting news many others received? sorry homies who did not...
 
When I saw the subject of the e-mail, I thought it was from Tufts -- "wait, you already rejected me!" Guess the TUSMs were not meant to be.
 
Any more emails get sent out today? No word since August, and I just want to officially put Temple in the reject pile at this point...

Haha, and an hour later, lo and behold, the reject email!

oh yeah I was rejected pre-interview yesterday. just fyi. I don't think they have anymore interview invites left to give out.
 
Hi Everyone! Accepted into Temple almost a month ago, but I am new to this forum. I'm from South Philly actually, but haven't lived there since moving away for college. Wondering if anyone heard from there about scholarships? Was this before or after you submitted your FAFSA?

If you any of you have questions about Philly, feel free to ask me!
 
It seems like all that's come out so far are merit scholarships. I got the TUSM academic merit award and one or two other people posted the got some other merit scholarships as well. This was before the FAFSA. I don't think anyone's posted about their financial aide package coming in yet.

Has anyone received any other acceptance packet other than the initial acceptance letter (i.e. additional forms/things we need to complete before matriculating)?

There was a paper with a list of things TUSM needs that came with the actual acceptance letter in the mail. I also think that list is on the TMO website underneath the acceptance video.

Ok! Didn't notice the paper with the mailed acceptance letter so I'll have to check that out when I get home. As for the link under the acceptance video it only says we need to do the background screen which I've already signed up for and completed.

It just seems strange to me that the Temple airways are soooooo quiet. SUNY Downstate is sending me so much crap and I've hardly heard a peep from Temple since October 15th :laugh:.

On a side note, how was second look? Anything especially interesting come up that you didnt know before?

Ah, you're right! I know there was another paper with the letter, though, that had other things, like final official transcripts from your schools and I think some other stuff.

It was good! Most of it was a review of stuff they told us at interview day, or going into greater depth about things they touched on at interview day. The best part of the day was when they took us through the Sim center. Some people got to interview standardized patients (the rest of us got to observe), listen to different heart sounds on Harvey (Harvey's a little creepy, too), sit in on/suggest stuff for a session with the SimMan (who is even creepier than Harvey), and they let us play around in the surgical skills lab with the laparoscopic surgery practice stations. I was really good at it! My countless hours of gaming have a benefit! :laugh:
 
I know there has been talk about how some of the current medical students live in center city. Any med students or knowledgeable others willing to share specific apartments or how you found your place. I've been trying to do a little apartment searching and the places in center city just seem a little unreasonably priced.

I'm from the West Coast, and I know almost nothing about Philly. Any suggestions on a good place to live or anyone affliated with Temple that would be able to help me find a place to live around the med school?

You don't want to live around the med school, the neighborhood is pretty bad. They said most students live in Manayunk (you'll need a car to get to school conveniently) or Center City (you can take Septa but you'll have to walk a few blocks to campus). There are other areas around CC but not really in it that you could look into as well, like Northern Liberties (NE of CC, but NOT Northeast Philly... again, you'll probably need a car) and South Philly like around Bella Vista (south of CC, you could potentially take the subway from here, too).

hmm, I probably won't be able to get a car. I heard that some people live around Chinatown. Is that a better area than the area around the school? It seems decently close to the med school on the map too...

there are places to live in the chinatown area, but many are expensive, loft style apartments. its closer on the map to the med school than say south philly, but still nowhere near close enough to walk (i should rephrase, its a long walk, but through neighborhoods you shouldnt have to take a long walk through)

at that point distance is a non issue and youll be taking the BSL subway anyway. My suggestion is look for housing in south philly, check out craigslist, dont rent anywhere in point breeze-ish (south of washington, west of broad) and you'll be good. there's also plenty of affordable housing in the art museum/fairmount/brewerytown area, however, fairmount and brewerytown can seem a bit sketch at times and might not be the best for a medical school first time philly expatriate
 
If possible, I'd like to share an apartment with another med student or two. I think economically it would make sense and furthermore, I probably can predict my roommate would less likely to be disruptive than someone I randomly pick from the streets.
I was wondering if Temple had any sort of way to mediate this process of finding suitable room/house mates.
 
I'm pretty sure a roommate and apartment listing is going to go up eventually, but I don't think it's been organized yet. I haven't really been following because my husband and I are buying a house.

From what I've heard, there will be something organized to help students connect to find roommates. If not I am sure when the time is closer, you can probably organize something yourself and have the admissions office help you contact all the incoming medical students.

In my opinion, if you're coming in from far away, it will be difficult to get a feel of the neighborhoods of any big city until you get there, so i suggest in first year, err on the side of comfort, live in safer and popular areas, and then you can make a decision of whether or not to move some place further and cheaper.

I don't have any specific apt recs, but I've lived in CC for a couple of years. When my partner and I were looking we had two days to find a place and managed to score a perfect 1.5BR in a brownstone at the lower end of our price range. Prices were higher on Craigslist and through the agencies I found there, and the places were REALLY hit or miss (the carved up brownstones tend to be either awesome or awkward). Look in the city papers (the free ones on the corner), or do what we ended up doing - find an area you like and walk around calling the numbers on the signs on buildings. :luck:

Thanks for the advice! I guess the first step is my fiancée getting accepted to her grad program before I worry too much more. Then we will make the long trip from Cali to do as you suggested.
 
Has anybody that interviewed at Temple/St. Luke's heard back lately? It hasn't quite been 6 wks since my interview, which is how long they said it would take, but I'm just curious if anyone has heard. I'm getting antsy.
 
CLS75, I was same date as you were. You might want to check your status page where you submitted your temple app. Mine changed today, I hope yours is good news!
