I asked a friend from Philly just the other day about the area; she said it was a little sketchy (then compared it to the area surrounding Penn, which she thinks is way nicer). But I've never been, so this is just second-hand info. Good luck!

I have lived in and around Philly my entire life (not counting 1 semester of college in NYC). The area around Temple undergrad is one of the worst in the city as far as crime goes. The area around Temple Med is a little better but it's still a pretty shady area. That said, the school has a massive security department and the campuses (campi?) are very safe and well lit. That said, it still scares me a little.

Your friend is right, the area around Penn is nicer. Like one of the previous posters said, it does start to get shady as you go further west, but the area around the university itself is pretty good. Drexel med (not in University City, near Penn, where most of Drexel's schools are located) is in an okay neighborhood, too.

That said, out of all the medical schools in Philadelphia, Jeff is in the best area, by far.

Drexel Med is in East Falls - its not even in the city

Last 2 yrs for Drexel are in city, or at the NJ shore - but the first 2 yrs are in East Falls.

It's cool. I got all confused for a second. It's actually closer to CC than Roxborough and Manayunk which are still part of Philly, too. 🙂

Does anyone interviewing at St. Luke's on October 19th want to split a hotel room? I haven't heard anything about student hosting and I want to save some money.

I'm a real good roommate, promise 🙂

Well, i'm flying in on October 18th and just staying that night. I was looking at the cheap places near the hospital that provide a free shuttle to the hospital. Go ahead and let me know how you feel about it.

I don't know if you can message me, i'm really new to SDN and still don't know how everything works 🙂

All interview spots up till December are taken up? Wow. Is this correct?

Anyone see or hear anything from the office about the student host list? The document that pops up still says that the names should have been up by Sept. 1st....

Hey Stevo111,

I actually called today asking about this. The lady told me that the list would be up by the end of today, but since it hasn't gotten up yet I'd say it's safe to assume it will be up on Monday or Tuesday. This is the only school I haven't heard back about student hosting yet, and it's my earliest interview, so I'm hoping they will put it up soon!

Yea I'm a med student here and they didn't send the email about being a student host until 4 days ago. There are only about 14 people on the sheet right now so maybe they wanted that to go up a little first.

Ah okay, thanks for letting us know! 🙂

Haven't interviewed yet, but I'm pretty sure as soon as your last interview is complete, your day there is over. If you haven't rec'd their invite email yet, pretty much everything (tour, lunch etc) happens before you meet with your interviewers in the afternoon.

Can we call admissions and ask the name of our interviewer? Is this a good idea?

I wouldn't call unless there was something wrong. They have thousands of applicants and over 1000 interview invites. If every interview invite called to ask that, it would be a lot to deal with. And they probably won't want to give that information anyway.

Interview on 11/3. OOS 35, 3.65

Never got an email. Submitted 2ndary on 8/21 and checked status on 8/25. Invited! Good luck everyone :luck::luck::luck:

Pazz, just to clarify...you got an interview invite four days after you sent in your secondary???

:bow::bow::bow::bow:

I got my first Interview offer with Temple!

My stats:
MCAT 30
Science GPA 3.4
Overall GPA 3.55

I hope this provides some hope for those of you applying with lower than average stats (at least lower than I've seen anyone else post on this thread) like me. 🙂

My stats are similar to yours. Thanks for keeping the moral up.

I think I read earlier in this thread a mention of the earliest available interview date being in December 😱 Is this true? Does anyone who's signed up for an interview date recently have an update on this?

They're still filling up their seats fast if that's the case. I guess I'll go crochet or something for another 1.5 weeks while I wait for my status to change from "under review." 🙄

When I registered about a week ago, the first interview date available was in december.

Geek - have you heard back from them yet? I think we were complete around the same time and I havent heard a peep and thought I would have heard something by now

I think at my interview on Tuesday they said they were booked until December already.

If your second interview is at 2:30p, you'll be done around 3p. I felt like they tried to make each interview is approximately 30min +/-5.

I can confirm that the admission staff said they were booked until December. Just a thought, but considering the interview season runs from September through March, I wonder if that means they've handed out approximately half of the interviews?

Congrats on the interview!!

Just wondering if Temple has any student-run outreach clinics. On their website they definitely talked about preceptorships in the community, but I couldn't find anything about university-affiliated free clinics.

Maybe they shared something with you during your interview 🙂 ?

Thanks!

Hey Gatsby, I like your SDN handle 😉

I know of one, it is called Temple CARES (Community Advocacy, Referral & Education Services) Student Run Clinic

Before I waste my money on the secondary....... can anyone tell me if they have received an interview with an MCAT below 30? (That isn't URM) I heard from someone (former employee at TUSM) that they have an mcat cutoff of 30, just trying to gauge how true that is.

Yup. Temp cares. The school is in a not very affluent area so you are definitely helping some people who need it too.

Hey,

I'm a student at Temple, so if you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

There are several student run/involved clinics: mobile clinics, a new homeless clinic, Temple CARES, needle exchange. Temple is extremely active in North Philly and because we have quite possibly the best schedule ever, students can be extremely active (especially during 1st year).

Second, the area around Temple is mentioned negatively way too much on SDN. Most students live either in CC or the suburbs (I live near Drexel and drive 7 minutes every morning to school). I even know students who live near the school. If you're smart about your surroundings you'll be fine. I have never felt unsafe.

Finally, the neighborhood/area Temple is located in is a POSITIVE for medical students. You get to experience/see all sorts of amazing things while working in student run clinics/TU Hospital that you may not get to see as often in other areas. That's the draw of Temple - you get to serve and help this amazing population. They have limited access to resources and they need YOU!

Good luck during your interviews/this application season 🙂 Try not to stress! Again, if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

@bug88

thanks for the info! Yeah, the area is a great draw. Even though it might not be the safest area, the kind of EXPERIENCE i hope to gain there (please interview/accept me!!!!!!) will be hard to find if I were to go to a school in the suburbs or elsewhere. As a hopeful future trauma surgeon, I choose Temple!

Sorry if you thought I was being negative that was not my intent. The area is rough, but the school was very very beautiful. I was more hinting at the student run clinic will actually serve the people who will need it the most when mentioning that the school is in a rough neighborhood. Everyone at the interview assured me that it really is not dangerous at all going to school there, and like bug says, just be aware.

Yeah I though my interview experience was amazing here. The students all seemed very chill and real. Not to mention the stadium lighting on the buildings and plenty of campus security probably make being on campus, even late at night seem plenty safe enough.

Sorry if you thought I was being negative that was not my intent.

🙂 I didn't actually notice anyone in particular doing it on this thread. I just noticed it popping up time and again in different threads. No worries (and no need to apologize). I just don't want any potential applicants/interviewees swayed away from Temple because of the "area it's in."

Glad you liked the school! Hope you have a great application season!

i believe i was complete at around the same time as you guys. lol still "under review"

I've been under review for sooo loooong. 🙁

I went to a nice university in a "rough area" so that doesn't scare me away at all. I just want to hear something from them!

Negatory, my friend. 🙁

I saw your previous post, which you feared that your high stats may be preventing you from receiving interviews from "lesser" schools.

I can promise you that is not the case at least in Temple. One of my friends had a 3.9 and 40 from Yale (IS) and received an interview from Temple. Just wanted to let you know and address one of your concerns.

I checked out the school website and SDN threads, but I am still not clear on the differences between the four clinical sites. Any information? Any advice? Thanks!!

Thank you. 🙂 Truthfully, I would be honored to attend any of the schools I applied to. My concern is much more about Drexel, which I understand tends to be used as a safety school by a lot of people. I just hate the not-knowing, ya know?

Thanks bug88 and everyone else for your input! These all sound like great ways to help!
I will definitely PM you if I have any more questions!

Temple sounds like a great school, and even though it would be hard for me to leave Cali, this is one place I would love to be 🙂

Me too Daisy!! Over two months!

Crossing my fingers for both of us! :xf:

Has anyone looked at the student host list yet? I'm assuming we're just supposed to randomly email people and see if they're available the day of our interviews...

I've been under review forever as well...I hope they show me some love this school seems awesome.

He is also interviewing at Drexel in early October. To be honest, I think you have an amazing application. There is not much you can do to improve it. Moreover, since you are already a mother, you should have had more practice in patience than the rest of us. Not sure how much this means to you, but I have complete faith that you will be admitted this cycle. I am rooting for you.

Good luck this cycle

has anyone gotten interviews from Temple recently? :]
can you post when you were complete, too? Thanksss!
