I was waitlisted last year and just got waitlisted again this year. Considering that I improved my application significantly, I am a bit confused. I don't understand what this school wants. Going down the list of what they want to see from their applicants (http://www.med.wayne.edu/admissions/preparing/index.asp), I can say that I fulfill most of what they are asking for. My gpa is a 4.0, and I have a 30 Q. To top it off, I had a great letter from a distinguished chairman at their medical school (I did research for him for months). I don't believe it was my interview because it went pretty well. On the brighter side, I was already accepted to MSU CHM 🙂. However, it would be nice to be able to choose between Wayne and MSU because I still believe that Wayne has many strengths. I guess I will have to wait.

If you have a 4.0 and a 30 and didn't get in last year, your problem aren't your stats. And if you're getting interviews, it's probably not your LORs or ECs. It's probably your interviewing skills. Have you done mock interviews?

Do you think this is the same case for Canadians?

It's true for Canadians as well. 4.0 and 30 are good enough at Wayne. I have almost identical stats and was waitlisted last year. The problem in my case was a "lack of clinical experience." I was asked what I did to fix that in this year's interview and was accepted (yesterday 🙂).

Congrats! *Sigh* I thought I did well on my interview. I have a 34N with a 4.0, so maybe it's the "N". I have clinical experience also. Just got on the alternate list. Congratulations again :-D

I don't think it is my interview skills to be quite honest. I've interviewed at other schools and have been accepted. Wayne seems to be a hit or miss. Seems to me that they are biased when choosing who they want (certain undergrads, race, etc.). My interview wasn't outstanding, but it wasn't horrible either. Some questions they ask are completely irrelavent: What do my mom, dad, and married sister do? Avg. hours spent for each of my activities (when it clearly states that on my app. which was in front of the interviewers face)? Where were my activites located (exact street names)? My highschool gpa and ACT score (who cares...isn't college gpa and MCAT more important)? What other schools have I been accepted to (are they trying to guage wether or not I am "good enough" for their school)? To me, it felt as if I was being interrogated rather than interviewed. Regardless, we had a great discussion on healthcare and my reasons for wanting to go to Wayne. But yeah, it's not like I got rejected, so I'm not pissed off...just confused...😕. Especially because I showed so much love for their school and received no love back! Lol what eves.

P.S. Lokhtar, I love your link. Lawrence Krauss is great. Also, do you play World of Warcraft haha?

Spankz, if you don't mind me asking, did you get waitlisted the past 2 times you applied as well?

Yes. And I don't think it is my interviewing skills. I'm working and my bosses tell me I interview very well. Further, when I've gone down to Wayne to ask why I was accepted, the admissions adviser looking at my application says my interviewer gave me a great recommendation.

How is THAT for frustrating?

That is frustrating Spankz, but I believe it boils down to what gujuDoc (insider;spelled correctly this time) pointed out: arbitrary subjectiveness. It is unfortunate that they did that to you three years in a row. Keep up the hope though, regardless of how you feel. You never know.

I've thought that for a long time. And it's pretty lame.

I wouldn't say I'm an insider at wayne state but its just something I believe based on other schools and talking with admissions people in other places.

I do believe though that even at every school there is always some degree of arbitrary subjectiveness that goes into everything.

For instance, even the interview is a funny case. Sometimes you can think an interview went well and still they will tell you it didn't go well in their opinion. that is subjectiveness based on one person's assessment of another.

Or in terms of what is considered good ECs or good letters, that is subjectiveness.

And those are just few examples, there is so much more that I could come up with.

I really do believe that if wayne is higher priority on your list of where you'd like to go the best thing you can do is send the update/interest letters.

It doesn't hurt to send letters in. I just don't think it helps very much. Whatever score you're given after your interview doesn't change no matter how many letters you've sent it.

Don't send a letter because you think that will get you in. If you absolutely need to send one, send it when you have new and SUBSTANTIAL things to add (publications, awards, etc.).

I feel funny asking this, but I received my acceptance on Wednesday and have no idea what to do now. I'm assuming the letter they send has all the info, but it takes at least 3 weeks for me to get mail from Wayne up here in Canada. Is there a deadline by which you have to respond to their offer?

I'm sorry for you who were waitlisted on Wednesday. I was on the waitlist last year before receiving my rejection about 5 weeks after their classes started. It's no fun. I hope you either get in quickly or get an offer somewhere else.

I meant that it was an inside joke because on MSU forum I spelled your name wrong and you got annoyed. lol

How many of you who got interviewed or accepted have gone to WSU undergrad or grad school?

Is there a student hosting program at Wayne? I was sure I read something about it. If anyone knows or has the email address please PM me. Thanks in advance.

I hear a lot of wait-listed (or rejected) people throw out stats and point to someone with lower stats and claim that the process is unfair and/or arbitrary. 🙄 But honestly, there are more people with high stats than there are spots. Most schools don't just assign a number and make a decision solely based on that. There is a personal component they look at: reliability, honesty, social awareness, etc, that is shown throughout the entire app (experiences, essays, recs) - not just the interview!

If you don't click with the interviewer, that may = wait-list. And you may feel great after the interview, but the admissions office at Wayne told me specifically that the interviewer isn't supposed react to you in a way that will tell you anything. :ninja: Besides, the interviewer does their best to present you to the committee, but they do not have the only say. So even if the interviewer likes you, someone on the committee might see a red flag in your app. Don't try to figure out the system...just do your best and try again next year if you don't get in somewhere! Good luck and congrats to everyone who was recently accepted!

Sit back relax & enjoy. You need to send in $50 as a deposit & your transcripts from colleges.
Finally join facebook class of 2015 med school group.
Congratulations.

alternate list... dang.
Sounds like I am one of many. My stats are 29O OOS (IN), lots of clinical experience. I feel like my numbers are relatively low compared to the rest of you guys at our interview day. I thought the interview was fun and the interviewer was fairly easy to talk to at Kresge, although sadly I think I could have done a better job with my responses.
We'll see what happens in May...

Hey for people who are from OOS or people who know the area well, how did you guys get from the airport (DTW) to detroit? And where did you guys stay? Thanks guys.

For those of you on the alternate list...don't give up hope!

I was placed on the alternate list after the first decision date and was accepted on the second date 😀 So you may not have to wait until May, just think positively!

So i am a first year at wayne right now, and I got in off the waitlist. Just wanted to let u guys know there is hope. A ton of people get waitlisted at wayne but they have a lot of movement off the waitlist. The people in my class I know who were accepted straight up had a 32 and above MCAT and extremely well rounded apps.
I actually had what I thought was a horrible interview, the guy who I interviewed with asked me questions for 10 minutes even tho the interview was supposed to be 45. Then he said that I would be waitlisted at the school...lol..i was pissed as hell. I didnt know why they would invite me for an interview for some guy to tell me I would be waitlisted.
I have alot of friends at the school who love it and all told me good things, and it is because of them that when i was eventually accepted off the waitlist I decided to go to wayne even tho I had acceptances elsewhere. I love the school, and being in detroit with so many underserved people is a huge advantage for med students because we get alot of hands on experience. So keep your hopes up waitlisters.

Yeah I guess it is common. It just hurts when your waitlisted 2 years in a row 🙁. But yeah it's just a waiting game and you never know. I just find it to be wrong for the interviewer to be so blunt about what is going to happen with the applicant. I've also heard stories where the interviewer said you are definately going to be accepted into their school. How can they be so sure when there is supposed to be a committee that votes? Maybe it's just that applicants twist words around?

But on another note, you are definitely right about the advantages for the med students 👍. That is why I still want to have the option to attend WSU. Thanks for the hope.

heyy,

I'm in state, completed since mid-October and haven't heard anything back. Does anyone know when the AC meets? Or if they're still extending interviews?

thannkss 🙂

Congrats to the all accepted people!

Good luck to all of the people I interviewed with! I interviewed with Dr. Crossland who was great; He asked me a lot of questions about my app, but the whole thing was very relaxed. The tour guides were awesome as well, very honest, very informative. I also got to sit in on two classes(about an hour and a half of vasculature physio with a fantastic lecturer, and 20 min in pulmonary pathophysio). What really got me was the students I met, no less then 3 saw my suit and congratulated me, two of which went out of their way to see if I had any questions. I'm probably at the med school campus more days than not just because of research, but it was awesome getting to really see the school and meet some of the great students. I have to say it was a great day 😀.

I wouldn't start worrying just yet. In a Nov9 post, KelMD said she just got an interview invite, complete beginning of Sept. My boy was complete at end of Sept, so he'll be coming up soon if they went chronologically (which they probably don't do). With the holidays coming up, it'll probably be some time in January or so before you get an interview invite.

I am IS as well, and just recently received my interview for January. I completed in mid-september, so you will hopefully find out in january. Good Luck!

congrats on the invite 🙂

And thanks for the info, hopefully Wayne hasn't forgotten about me.

How many people here have interviewed in late November and December and awaiting decisions on the 22nd? Good luck everyone.

I am waiting to hear back from WSU on December 22nd. They are also my number 1 choice and I will definitely drop all of my other interviews/acceptance offers as soon as I get in. It feels like my interview date was years ago and that it is taking forever for their decision. It could be a very good Christmas this year or a very bad Christmas.

Hello everyone,

I just called the admissions office today and she informed me that they had not extended any interviews SINCE mid-October. She said they were going to start sending out more interview requests after the holidays. If you haven't heard anything yet, don't panic! They are still working on a lot of applications.

Good luck to everyone!

and Happy Holidays!

I'm not trying to burst your bubble, but I received my interview November 18th, after completing late August. I have average stats, and am IS, so I agree not to worry. Good luck to everyone!

Just received an interview invite today!!!! It was a great early Christmas gift! I was complete mid September. So everyone just hang in there! 🙂

Waiting to hear back tomorrow! I'm very nervous and trying not to get my hopes up to high so I'm not crushed if I get waitlisted. Good luck to everyone else waiting on a decision also!!

Accepted. 🙂 Best of luck to everyone else who's waiting for some news!

Just got the accepted email along with the document...It looks really informal but I'm very very excited!!! Good luck everyone!!! FYI, I'm OOS.

Accepted! OOS, interviewed last week.

Ridiculous OOS tuition means I will very likely be giving up my seat, but need to get into a better/cheaper school first!

Waitlisted :/ Congrats to everyone who got in today!!
Any idea how much movement there is with getting off the alternate list? My tour guides made it seem like a lot of people get in from it..

There is a decent amount of movement, but really none of it happens until after May, the last decision day. This is my 2nd time on the waitlist, and I'm just praying I either get in early or get cut early. The waiting is the worst part.

There is definitely waitlist movement before May. I'm a first year and I know at least a few people who didn't get in on their first decision day but got in on the next one.
