Thank you for your feedback, DitchDoc73 and MLT2MT2DO. Yes my MCAT is still good for this year, if I don't get in I'll be retaking it (hopefully my TPR teaching will help if it comes to that 🙂 ). I am definitely applying to more than just CCOM and MSU-COM, those are just my 2 top choices because ideally I'd like to stay in the Midwest and absolutely love Chicago, and MSU is in my state.

Any other opinions welcome 🙂

MCAT: 23S ( 10B, 7V, 6P) i am scheduled to re-take it but I just hate physical sciences....!!

I am also a MSc student with 9 peer-reviewed first author articles and multiple conference proceedings. I have multiple extra-currics, and 250 shadowing hours ( Demratologist, Neurologist, Orthopedic surgeon).

Side question: In the application where do you list publications? In the awards or work experience?

Anyways, any help would be appreciated. This is the first time I apply and its a crazy process. So what are my chances?
 
I currently have a pretty low sGPA, but I am focusing on retaking classes this summer(GenChem1,Genetics, Bio II) which I got C's in my freshman year. IF I am able to get all A's, my sGPA would be around 2.8ish and my cGPA 3.2.. But these grades wouldn't be calculated in untill August sometime. I'm planning on taking the MCAT July 8th. My application would be in pretty late and even with a good MCAT score and my strong EC's, I'm not very competitive. Is it even worth it to apply this year or should I focus on getting my GPA as high as possible, then applying early next cycle?
 
Hey there! I have a somewhat unique situation...I just finished my junior year of college and just have 7 credits left to graduate. I had been in a BS/DO program in NYCOM but the MCAT cut-off was 26 and I missed it (even though my GPA was better than what they wanted!) and now I'm left not knowing what to do or where to go. I wasn't exactly expecting not to get that score but taking 21 credits a semester with a part-time job didn't mix well with studying for the MCAT.

I didn't exactly have time to do much volunteer work. I shadowed a physician for two summers and volunteered in his office but that was the extent of it. Honestly, I didn't do anything more because of the intense amount of classes I took all at once and the job I had to do on the side. I have been doing research with a NYCOM professor and will be doing more research over the summer with another.

Basically - I just need 7 credits left to graduate. I can take them over the summer and be done with school now (one is a research course and the other is just a basic online class). I'll be studying to retake the MCAT too this summer along with the research.

Should I take the classes and graduate now or should I just take 13 credits in the Fall and graduate in December?

Right now my cGPA is 3.66 and my sGPA is a 3.40. I can probably graduate with a 3.69 cGPA in the summer but if I go on in the Fall, the extra few credits would bump my cGPA to a 3.7+

What would other Medical Schools think of graduating a year early and taking that year off? I'll be doing some volunteer work, do more research, and continue to work... and then in January (or September - depending on when I graduate), I was planning to go to my dad's clinic in Bangladesh to help out with disadvantaged people in need of medical care. I know that by then...it'll probably be too late in the application cycle to list that as one of the things I'll be doing...but I will anyway.

What would you recommend? Graduate early or continue school another semester?
 
I don't really understand the point of your question. What would you get out of graduating this summer vs this fall? Are you planning on applying this year? Your GPA seems fine if you can pull a 3.69, but what was your MCAT score? If it's much lower than 26, I'd take time off this summer to exclusively study for the MCAT.

Ok Thanks for reading....here is my story...I am 26 year old male....when I started college I was immature and stupid so I failed many courses and got bad grades. There is something here in Texas its called fresh start or option II which erases your old grades and allows you to start new, so I did that. I love the health-care field and decided to pursue nursing. I took all my pre-reqs for nursing school at my local community college. My science GPA is a 4.0 there. I am about to graduate nursing school with a 3.75 gpa. I also work as a tech in a Level 1 trauma center/emergency room in West Texas bordering Mexico. I have been working here for a year. I was thinking about completing Biology II, Ochem II, Physics II and Genetics at my university to finish up my med school pre-reqs. Like I said the others were completed at a community college. What are my chances of getting into a med school this is my dream and I would do anything to achieve this lifetime goal of mine . I have not taken the MCAT but I plan to start practicing after nurwsing school while I work in the ICU. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.
 
My school only offers biochem in the fall but the problem is that im also taking ochem2 in the fall. I talked to the biochem teacher and he said it would definitely help to take ochem 2 first but other people have done both at same time and did "good" he said. I already signed up for both but would like to know how much not taking ochem 2 is going to hinder my biochem? Any tips or suggestions? I don't want to wait a year to take biochem because although i will still be around and probably taking classes at the time, I will be applying for DO schools next summer so want to show that i've already taken it and from what i've heard, biochem can help out for the MCAT which im taking a year from now so want to have biochem taken by then. I guess its set in stone that im taking it this fall but will it be EXTREMELY difficult without ochem 2 under belt?

My university requires O chem I and II before enrolling into biochem.

No, it won't be "EXTREMELY" hard to take biochem along with ochem 2. I found that when taking biochem I was remembering mostly concepts from ochem 1. Somehow I got through calc based physics 2 AND pchem 2 without calc 2, so taking prereqs concurrently is definitely do-able. The biggest thing though is that classes differ school to school, but since your prof said people have done well taking both I'm sure you don't have anything to worry about.
 
Definitely not impossible to take them together (though, this will depend a little on the school). Honestly, organic chem is a pre-req for biochem, but you can do ok with a solid understanding of basic concepts learned in the first semester. I don't think much of second semester o-chem would have been useful for biochem (though I took o-chem II after biochem).
 
i do have a great understanding of o'chem 1 so hopefully that will help out alot. If the previous poster got through it without even taking part concurrently with biochem, then i think it should be doable. Thanks for the posts.
 
I personally think you should be ok as orgo 1 seems to be the universal prereq for biochem, but orgo 2 is not. While it is still in the majority, many offer biochem without orgo 2, so it has to be possible.
 
I have no idea what the specifics are to the fresh start program, but I do know that if texas really does "erase" previous grades, the rest of the nation does not. So unless you want to only go to school in texas, it will be rough. If texas is your dream, you sound pretty qualified if you finish your prereqs and do well on the mcat.

You look to be right on par for the average accepted student. Your numbers look good and I think you have a solid chance of getting in if you apply to all of those schools.

I'm not quite sure how the master's GPA will factor into things but it's definitely worth applying broadly across DO schools and at least WSU (I'm assuming this is where your master's is from). Good luck!
 
Well, I might as well ask now, just got my low MCAT score back.

MCAT: 27Q (9,9,9)

Good EC's: research/publication, EMT/saved a stabbed girl, father passed away during college, hospital volunteer [assistant dept. coordinator] >300hrs, etc.

Pretty much feeling like I can't get in anywhere :/

So I'm going to be submitting to get the cycle rolling again on June 1st. I'm still waitlisted so my plan is to apply in 2 waves. First wave of ~6-7 schools and a second wave of the rest. I'm applying very broadly because I didn't have much luck last year but my app has improved so hopefully it'll work in my favor this go-round.

When I apply

MCAT 29 12 p 9 v 8 bio.
I'm gonna retake the MCAT regardless just so i can be a bit more competitive?

I made a 23 last year in MCAT and then took it again last week after KAPLAN class. I am fearing that I did not do very well this time.

Everyone feels like they got beaten up right after the MCAT. What were your practice tests? how balanced were your scores looking? Your GPA is average for DO schools, if you get your MCAT back with ~26/7 and your ECs are good you've got a shot. IF you feel that you can definitely do better a third time book it again, however, if you mess it up again you are shooting yourself in the foot. Look at how you are studying and what you are doing poorly in (Kaplan gives you a breakdown) so you know where to study.
 
don't be so glum, chum. You don't know your score until you actually get it...so just sit tight for now.

Given your info, I would still apply if your score is even slightly better than the first time around (shows improvement). Purely anecdotal, but I've read of other peeps posting similar stats to yours and still getting in.

Of course, if you get <23, I would re-write it and try to apply for this cycle anyway. Applying early is obviously best, but applying within the deadlines is not entirely the kiss of death.

Hi - I'm graduating this year from an Ivy League school with the following:

cGPA: 3.22
sGPA: 3.00 [w/ upward trend]
I'm planning to take at least 2 more science classes before applying.

Just got my MCAT back: 9V 10B 10P (29M)
It was the most difficult test I'd ever seen... even after taking several through Kaplan. Many of my practice exams were better, but they fluctuated a ton.

ECs:
4 year div. 1 athlete, senior captain (I got straight A's after I stopped playing varsity sports)
4 year club athlete
spent 2 summers volunteering at a children's hospital doing neuro research/shadowing (led to 2 publications)
neuro tutor (paid)
teaching assistant (paid)
several years of volunteering with elementary/middle school students
adopted Asian female

I have a 2-year clinical research job lined up at a prestigious med school.

1. Should I retake the MCAT?
2. What are my chances?

I'm cautious in suggesting you limit the amount because there's a lot of unknowns and unquantifiable factors in applying so... applying to more wouldn't hurt.

1) No MCAT retake unless you have your heart set on an mid-upper tier MD school(s) and you're absolutely sure you can do better. 29 is an iffy retake score because you could easily do worse.

2) I think your upward trend, mcat and ECs give you a fair shot at DO if you apply broadly.

Question: Is your two year research gig a back-up or is this something you're doing for sure? Just curious how all that fits into applying now...

~ 600 hours volunteering as an EMT-B

- I am an NJ resident and attend a top 10 school

Also, are there any other places I should consider?

I'm doing it for sure, so I'm not applying for some time... I just figured that if I need to retake the MCAT I should do it sooner rather than later...

I posted this in WAMC form and didn't get much response on DO schools.


I am an IL resident and reapp this year. Because I applied really late (and was illinformed) I did not apply to any DO schools. This year I am. I have a 29 MCAT unbalance- 12B 9 8. GPA is 3.80, SGPA is 3.58. 1.5 semesters hospital volunteer, 30-40 hrs shadowing, 2 years in exercise neuro research and various leadership/comm service stuff (a little light on community service).

What DO schools should I apply to. Are there any DO schools that I should avoid applying to that are sort of "lower tier?" I am fine going anywhere in the country, although Chi, NY or Cal would be awesome.
 
as for me...I'm a non-trad student, 3 years as an RN in the state prison system, 8 years prior EMS experience (between the 2 approx 8,000 patient care hours) a bunch of other random activities

the only bad part are the grades: I took a withdrawal in Organic I and am currently retaking (will be done on 6/25) having that done, I took the MCAT on 5/21 and thought it went pretty well (don't want to jinx myself) I'm currently shadowing a DO Vascular Surgeon that went to Nova
here are my grades:

sGPA of 3.4/cGPA of 3.25 (my freshman year cGPA was a whopping 2.4)
PB GPA of 3.7 after 30 credits

with these stats, what would my chances be at NSU, Bradenton, GA-PCOM (my top 3 picks)?

This will probably get merged into that huge "what are my chances" thread ... but if you're looking NY, CA, and Chi town ... I'd highly consider Midwestern University - Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Western University of Health Sciences - College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific, and New York College of Osteopathic Medicine.

It's hard to rank in "tiers." Some people usually associate newer schools with a lower tier, but after interviewing last season, I really don't agree. I think you should just stick around, do some searching, google, etc, and you'll figure out which osteo schools you want to apply to. If you want to research and PM me with specific school questions, feel free.

Overall GPA = 2.65
Lower-Division GPA = 2.0
Upper-Division GPA = 3.22-3.66 (upward trend in last 84 units)


Chem A w/ Lab = 1) D/D, 2) B-/B+ (repeated)
Chem B w/ Lab = 1) C/B
Chem C w/ Lab = 1) F/ C, 2) C (repeated)
Calc A = 1) C+
Calc B = 1) D-, 2) B- (repeated)
Stat = 1) F, 2) B (repeated)
Bio A = 1) F
OChem A = 1) F, 2) F (repeated)

Although personal issues are not excuse for low grades, these following life experiences have given me the drive to pursue a DO in Psychiatry.

During my fourth year at UC Irvine I experienced significant personal issues:

-3 close deaths -> two were due to suicide & one to ovarian cancer
-I had a live-in boyfriend who was an abusive-drug addict
- I spent a year in Rehab & have been sober since ( 3 years 🙂 )
- first generation / first in my family to graduate college
- educationally advantaged

*I have 400+ hours voluteering for an in-hospital internship.
*I have a public health internship

WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?

??? HOW DO I RAISE MY cGPA, sGPA, overall GPA IF I ATTEND DIFFERENT UNIVERSITIES ???

1. Should I stay at UC Irvine and pursue a second-bach through UC Extension in order to increase my cGPA?

2. Should I go for a post-bac program like SF State?

3. Should I pursue Nursing to gain more in-hospital experience then apply to a SMP later?

I am 25 years old & it has taken me seven years (due to my two year leave of absence) to finish a BA & minor. I do not mind spending the additional time to pursue a second-4 year-bach through UC Extension, but the money required is the issue. I would like to min. the amount of student loans. 😀

I know my MCAT is low, so i'm wondering if I should just apply to a few schools at first to get the primary verification process rolling and then wait to send to more once i get my scores from my retake (but that won't be til mid august), or if i should just send my primary now to all the schools i want to apply. I guess i'm just wondering if i'll get screened out with a 24N right now. I'm hoping to bring it up to at least a 26-27. Thanks for any advice!
 
You need to repeat those classes that you have C's or worse in. Make sure you get an A this go-round. A repeated class like your OChem A that results in another failing grade will ruin your application. You have significant life story and reasons for doing poorly in undergrad. It is something that you could discuss and will give you some leniency. You need to make sure to show that you have significantly improved your study habits and grades as well as rock the MCAT.

Taking classes through UCI extension is going to get pricey, you are looking at about 1000 a course. Same with SF State if I'm not mistaken. One option to consider is UCLA Extension if you'd like to stay relatively close to home (I'm assuming you are from Irvine). They have a pre-health certificate program and they are also cheaper, plus its night courses. The courses are anywhere from 500-650 dollars and are generally twice a week (M/W or T/Th) they also have chemistry courses that just meet Saturdays from 9-1. If you are dedicated you could take 2 courses per quarter and work full time, just make sure you do not shoot yourself in the foot by doing poorly in the classes again.

If I were you I would find a job doing research or working in LA at a normal 8-5 job where you can support yourself and still take courses. Take classes at UCLA extension and work hard.

I know my MCAT is low, so i'm wondering if I should just apply to a few schools at first to get the primary verification process rolling and then wait to send to more once i get my scores from my retake (but that won't be til mid august), or if i should just send my primary now to all the schools i want to apply. I guess i'm just wondering if i'll get screened out with a 24N right now. I'm hoping to bring it up to at least a 26-27. Thanks for any advice!

Submit your primary, be sure to indicate you have an MCAT retake coming. You won't get screened (most schools don't screen anyway) with an 8-7-9. Be sure to work on your weaknesses for your retake.

The above post had some good advice so I'll leave it at that. Despite money issues, I have to stress at the minimum you must retake any pre-req with a grade lower than C or they will not count.

You can raise your GPA with retakes if they're the same class and same credits or greater. Your most recent grade is the one that goes into your AACOMAS gpa.
 
I am taking the MCAT June 17. My scores on practice tests are as follows (In order I took them):

AAMC 6: 27 (PS: 9, V: 9, BS: 9)
AAMC 7: 24 (PS: 8, V: 8, BS: 8)
AAMC 5: 27 (PS: 8, V: 11, BS: 8)
AAMC 8: 26 (PS: 8, V: 10, BS: 8)

sGPA: 3.65
cGPA: 3.71

Pretty standard EC's: work part-time, psych research (3 presentations and 1 pub), hospital volunteer, shadowing DO, teaching assistant, hockey player and coach (i'm female by the way)

I'm just wondering if I have a chance if I get a 24-27 on the actual MCAT. I am a NY resident and plan on applying to 10-12 schools, NYCOM, LECOM (all), and PCOM are my top choices as of now.

I just want to know if I have a chance or if I should work on my MCAT/application more and apply next cycle instead. Thanks!
 
Yes you have a chance. I would apply. I got a 25 with a 2.89 cGPA, and a 2.98 sGPA and got interviews at 6 schools with 1 acceptance, 2 waitlists and 2 declined interviews.

Wow, congrats! Did you have really good EC's or anything like that going for you?
 
I work in a CHC as a Lab Tech, so ive had approx 4000 clinical hours. plus shadowing various specialties, Podiatry, Peds, IM, FM, Ortho and Anes. Played College Baseball, coached youth baseball. My GPA trend was pretty significant, and I am a URM. So I think all those were big positives in my app.
 
Hello, I'm graduating from UC Irvine in Dec 2010, and would like to know how I can improve my chances of getting into a DO school?

Overall GPA = 2.65
Lower-Division GPA = 2.0
Upper-Division GPA = 3.22-3.66 (upward trend in last 84 units)


Chem A w/ Lab = 1) D/D, 2) B-/B+ (repeated)
Chem B w/ Lab = 1) C/B
Chem C w/ Lab = 1) F/ C, 2) C (repeated)
Calc A = 1) C+
Calc B = 1) D-, 2) B- (repeated)
Stat = 1) F, 2) B (repeated)
Bio A = 1) F
OChem A = 1) F, 2) F (repeated)

*I have not taken the rest of the pre-med requirements


Although personal issues are not excuse for low grades, these following life experiences have given me the drive to pursue a DO in Psychiatry.

During my fourth year at UC Irvine I experienced significant personal issues:

-3 close deaths -> two were due to suicide & one to ovarian cancer
-I had a live-in boyfriend who was an abusive-drug addict
- I spent a year in Rehab & have been sober since ( 3 years 🙂 )
- first generation / first in my family to graduate college
- educationally advantaged

*I have 400+ hours voluteering for an in-hospital internship.
*I have a public health internship

WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?

??? HOW DO I RAISE MY cGPA, sGPA, overall GPA IF I ATTEND DIFFERENT UNIVERSITIES ???

1. Should I stay at UC Irvine and pursue a second-bach through UC Extension in order to increase my cGPA?

2. Should I go for a post-bac program like SF State?

3. Should I pursue Nursing to gain more in-hospital experience then apply to a SMP later?

4. Will a post-bac program improve my overall GPA, sGPA, and non-sciGPA?

I am 25 years old. I do not mind spending the time to pursue a second-4 year-bach through UC Extension, but the money required is the issue. I would like to min. the amount of student loans. 😀
