Maizy, just because you were wait listed doesn't mean your completely out of the running forthis year. I think your best bet is to retake. Just looking at the numbers, it takes about 30-35 days to get a score back and depending on your level of free time, a month or two to prepare. Even with a 50 hr per week position, you should be able to register for an online Kaplan class or study on your own time. it's now just about February, so even if we high ball the time periods you would be ready to take in April, and get your score back in early May. this would allow you to keep your position at americorps while hopefully bumping up your score. I think this would take up much less time than trying to add extra classes to your already busy schedule.

Thanks to both! good advice. Surprisingly, I actually have taken a lot of upper level bio (I was a microbiology double major, dropped it during my last semester). I've already taken biochem, genetics, micro, immunology, neuro, phys, and a couple anatomy labs. That's where I'm at a little bit of a loss, the only classes I could find at my institution that I haven't taken yet are pathogenic micro, a graduate level human genetics, and histology. All of these are offered as night classes or early enough in the morning that I could make it to work. I think I might stick with your advice augustburnsdan, I can mentally prepare for the MCAT again over the next couple of months, I think I just needed someone to tell me that it was possible 🙂. I was averaging a 30-32 on the practice tests before bombing and getting a 27, I have a lot of test day anxiety. Hopefully I can channel my vengeance for being on the wait list and use it to my favor. I still have a couple other programs I'm waiting to hear from, I even have an interview scheduled next week so I suppose if I got any good news before sitting for the test again, I may as well just not take it. No one in their right mind would retake if they didn't have to 🙂

Thanks! Any additional advice always welcome.

Although I completely agree with the above posts, I would throw in a word of caution about taking the MCAT again so soon. Make sure that you are able to put in the time to study enough to improve your MCAT score, because if you end up with the same score (or God-forbid a worse score) the second time around, things will get really hairy for you. Since you were a double major, I would assume that you have taken a lot of credits, thus it will be hard to significantly improve your GPA (you could show a nice upward trend though), as such improving you MCAT is your best chance at getting into med school without having to do a master's program or something. I am not saying I don't think you can do it, I would just make sure you are completely ready before you sit for the MCAT again. Just my opinion, take it with a grain of salt.

Oh, that is a little weird. I was thinking as a Spanish major you hadn't taken any science classes, but you've basically taken the same classes as me, so the classes you took probably isn't the major problem. I had to take the MCAT 3 times, and the last time, I studied 24/7 for a little less than a month. Since you were doing well on the practice tests, I'm sure you can do well again, and augustburnsdan is right - you have plenty of time between now and April to study and retake the MCAT. But you'll have to judge this for yourself. I know I had a difficult time studying for the MCAT when I also had school, but that's me. You're also scoring higher on practice tests than I was, so you're probably more ready for it than me. Berkeley review saved my life, btw, if you are wondering what to study with. But maybe you'll be lucky, and you won't have to retake 🙂

When is Second Look? I would love to go, but I don't find out my decision until mid-March ish, and who knows if I'll even be accepted then. Sounds fun though!

It would probably work because the one at St. Joe's (AZ) is on March 30 and the one in Omaha is on April 14!

Hopefully you have an answer by then!

Pretty sure I got my letter like 5 days after I was accepted. It was a hard copy, btw, not an email or phone call.

I interviewed here 12/10 and haven't heard anything back yet. I hope that isn't a bad sign. The wait is agonizing! I loved the school's atmosphere, it just felt right being there. I definitely see myself going here.

Oh, I'm sure you will hear really soon. They are good about notifying, either way. I just got my letter of acceptance last saturday, and I interviewed on the 3rd. Hope you hear good things!

I want to join the Facebook group 🙁 3-6 more weeks of waiting....so agonizing!

How did you status change when you were under second review? I haven't been rejected yet, and I haven't heard anything from Creighton since I was complete sometime in August. Not sure what to think

So they only mail? No phone call?

I didn't get a phone call when I was accepted. However a girl from my school who was accepted the same day as me did get a call. That causes extreme stress until I got the snail mail.

So they only mail? No phone call?

Decisions are snail mailed. If you think they've made a decision on your file, you can call to find out before you get it in the mail. I think sometimes they may call you, but I don't know how often that happens, and it probably only happens if they have time to do it. It seems that when the LORs section disappears from your secondary, that's when a decision has been made on your file.

My status did not change on the status page. In fact, it has not changed at all since I started checking it. When I logged in the other day, the last update I had was 12/16, which many people on this forum also received.

I am not sure if "second review" even means anything. Neomed told me something similar about my application being reviewed a second time and their secretary informed me that it was positive to be reviewed twice, only to get a rejection via email 5 days later. Ohio State told me my application is being reviewed for the second time, but they also informed me that they try to give everyone two reviews before a decision is made. I was hoping another SDN member had experience and could help me set my expectations either way because I certainly do not want to carry false hope.

I've never heard of a second review for Creighton, so I'm not really sure what's going on with that. Does it actually say that it's in a second review on your secondary?

interviewed on 1/13
its been 4 weeks and now my file has been updated on 2/9

Interviewed same day as you, also updated 2/9, LORs also missing :scared:

Do you guys know how receptive Creighton is to in the area emails?

I'm so nervous! Definitely calling at 8am tomorrow (or whenever they open)

4 week wait?? Man I'm jealous, mine was double, I was dying...

For those accepted and actually planning on attending. What are the top reason for choosing this school over the others you interviewed at?

Thank you for your time

I just saw your guys posts now and called. 1/13 interview - accepted!

My wife and I live in the Omaha area (as does her entire family), so when applying to medical schools, my top two choices were UNMC and Creighton. When I got accepted to both, I chose Creighton over UNMC (without even considering other schools due to my family situation), so I can talk about why I chose Creighton over UNMC, but I can't talk about other schools because I never considered anything outside of Nebraska once I was accepted to a Nebraska medical school.

The first thing that really caught my attention was the level at which the administration cares about people. I didn't go to CU for undergrad, however, I went up to the admission's office several times over the last couple years to talk to them about my progress and ask advice. I was very impressed by their willingness to help me. I sent several emails and placed a couple calls to UNMC over the same time frame to get a second opinion on my questions, and not one of my voicemails or emails was returned, which left a bad impression.

The second thing (which was the most influential part of my decision) was the match rate between the two schools. During my interview at UNMC, they stated that 85% of their students match into one of the top three residency spots they wanted, while Creighton stated that 95% of their students matched into one of their top three. Beyond that, looking at last year's residency match list from Creighton, 33 students (~25%) of last year's class matched into a ROAD residency.

The third thing that differentiated CU from UNMC was the z-score system. While not that big of a deal, I am just not a fan of the z-score grading system used at UNMC.

This website (http://www.amsa.org/premed/medsurvey/) is a pretty good source to see what graduating medical students think of the school they just graduated from. Hope this helps.

Edit: I'm not trying to make this a UNMC bashing thing. They are both good schools, these were just my main reasons for choosing Creighton.

Well If your own personal goal is to improve than of course retake the MCAT. However, keep in mind that if you retake and bomb again you no longer receive the benefit of the doubt from admissions. Make a mistake the first time, one can consider that you had a lot of test day anxiety but if you take it a second time and get a similar score. It could me misinterpreted as if that is the best you can do..... One of the many reasons why retaking the MCAT is not a choice to be taken lightly

Respectfully

Thank You,

Your insight is appreciated. I am actually a Florida Resident and have been accepted to all of the Florida Schools that i have interviewed at and several outside of Florida, to include Creighton. It seems to be pretty difficult to make a decision only based on how i felt about the school since the students in each of the schools all seemed very happy. Almost as if they were chosen for that reason ................... but thats what makes interviews so exciting.

I appreciate you input of these two schools. If there are any other current students who wouldn't mind commenting on their choice between UNMC and Creighton I would be grateful!

Waitlisted as well. Pretty bummed, I had such a great time at the interview. I'm definitely going to be sending a letter of interest and speak with Dr. Jarmon about my application as a whole. No way I'll give up that easily.

Interviewed on 1/13. Called today and got waitlisted as well. I also thought my interviews went very well and saw myself as a good fit here. I guess it's to be somewhat expected when you interview later in the season eh?

Does anyone know when the last set of interview invites are going out?

I called the admissions office a few weeks ago and a very friendly woman told me that the last batch would go out in mid-to-late February. So there's still hope!
