It is a relative term and yes it is a problem with these cold and apathetic physicians. And I totally get that these adcoms dont want a bunch of dunderheads in their medical schools, BUT I think the fact that schools like Howard give people with promise who aren't gunners a chance is awesome. So when people make sweeping declarations like that (especially on this forum) it should be taken with a grain of salt. Because I guarantee you that a significant number of the people who are going to be in the class of 2016 dont fit into the 3.5 30 MCAT mold, and a majority of them will have so many unique experiences and missions that will show the adcoms and the committee that they are dedicated to HUCM's mission. So again, yeah its a numbers game but what makes this school unique is that it looks beyond the numbers and delves into the person and their potential and what they are really about. Plus I think that on some level information like that makes some people feel like they cant participate in the forum, and that to me is sad.
Damn I have reached my word quota for the day.

I really don't see what in my post that wards off potential sdn'ers. I am not your typical med school applicant because I have a degree in the arts. If anything, I am on the outside looking in.
It may be a sweeping generalization, but it is pretty accurate for the most part. I even qualified my original statement too; so I even admit that you should take my opinion with a grain of salt. But if you think for a second that it isn't a numbers game, then I think you are lying to yourself. Yes, med schools like to say that they are evaluating your application in its entirety and all that rosy stuff, but I have a strong hunch that they are just saying that to look good. And before they look at your application to evaluate it "holistically," I am sure there more than a handful of medical schools that screen first based on statistics and then evaluate students "holistically," which really doesn't fix our system of picking apathetic physicians. Yes, Howard may look at applicants more holistically, but I also believe even Howard has a cut off for the mcat scores and are trying to recruit competitive candidates first. I think that is key to their true priorities. Howard recruits lots of students who do not fit the mold, but lets not forget that they go after the ones that do first.

I apologize if this has been asked before, but does Howard accept update letters? Either way would it be worth emailing, snail-mailing, or both? Thanks everyone.

Yes via email. Mrs Walk said to make it short though. Like 3-5 lines.

My Bad!!! Definately fell asleep....Im working on a term paper...fun times🙁

Good luck with your paper SunDai! On my end, I made it through a formal evaluation (where the principal sits in on your class, looks at all your lesson plans, parent phone calls, etc., and writes up a report on how well you teach) and I am off to teach Saturday School this morning. Not the most ideal way to spend my Saturday morning, but hey, extra money always comes in handy near the holidays.

Yesterday was the end of a very *very* long string of days with extremely little sleep. I got 11 hours last night though, so now I feel fantastic! 😀

How's everybody doing?

Ok, this is one of these TL;DR posts, but I love to talk about teaching...

I teach Biology (a relative cake-walk, since this is my 3rd year teaching it) and Anatomy (a challenge, as it is a relatively new course at my school, has few resources (I create the majority of the powerpoints, worksheets, and labs we do from scratch) and most of my students have very low background knowledge about Biology (can't recognize a heart or brain when shown a picture of the organ and several have failed their Biology class, but are still placed in my Anatomy class...)

It's really rewarding because I get to teach a subject that is SO FREAKING AWESOME, but it's also really really really tiring to try to build a class from the ground up. Think about how long it take to make a presentation for college...piecing together a powerpoint and thinking about the right thing to say...then add video clips to reinforce key concepts, create a note sheet for kids (as many require this as a learning accommodation), plan hands-on activities so they're not bored, and be sure to fill up a 90 minute class period every day...Then, just do that on a daily basis for the next 6 months. I'm really tired, lol. 😴

I try out my new lessons on my 3rd block class and they usually flop. It is a particularly trying class, about half of which is made of students that failed Biology the first go-around. They are very vocal about the fact that they don't want to be in my class and I'm the worst teacher to ever grace the halls of my school. :eyebrow: That's a good sign though...if they like you, you're clearly not pushing them hard enough. 😉

Thank heavens the principal came to my 4th block, which is filled with awesome students (including the homecoming king and queen at my school) who were darling little angels, raising their hands, going "oh! oh! oh!" and showboating in front of the admins...

How about you all? Any easy/difficult/fun classes you're taking? Boss getting you down? Slowly losing your mind as you check your e-mail box 80 times a day? (*cough cough*)

My job is strange, its serious work and all (im an epi) but the people I work with are just a bag of laughs. Whether its the administrative assistant gang, who will purposely cause a paperwork bottleneck because they didnt get coffee and muffins for admin day, or the grade 13 (meaning highly paid) folks who come to the grade 11s for tutorials on how to do their jobs. Or the skulduggery braintrust who has meetings to plan how NOT to do work, or the union mamas who file grievances if someone doesnt tell them good morning. Its the Holiday Season too so maybe someone will give their secret santa a roll of toilet paper again this year . The good thing about working with this level of disfunction is that if your like me and you assert yourself and dont condone foolishness, people leave you alone (so i get to work on my secondaries at work...lol).
Re: Interviews, cmon' schools show us some love and need to leave this place so I dont become one of THEM.:meanie::meanie::meanie:

Everytime my phone's email ring tone goes off I get nervous.

Not to be a debbie downer here, but I think so OBEAHDOCTOR. If you go back to page 10 of this thread, i think one of the medical students explained it perfectly. They interview those with higher MCAT scores first, then interview those with less competitive scores after the New Year. Also, that is exactly what one of the ladies in the office told me. But don't lose hope. It's not over until they stop interviewing in the spring!!!!!

I, too, don't know how true this (MCAT>everything else) might be. Without sounding like a jerk (just want to provide a counter-example) my score is >90th %-ile but I haven't heard ANYTHING. They definitely look at the application overall rather than any specific factors.

I am unsure too of how the interviews are working out. But it seems that the last person on this thread mentioned that she was able to get an interview towards the end of November. I pray too that all our prayers get answered, and we go to the school we want. *It would be nice if we all got accepted to Howard and were future classmates! 🙂

When the weather is nice, it sure is nice, but it is the Windy city!!! (it earns that nickname!)

Hoping we can get that interview soon. 🙁 ...

i love you people too! hope we all get in here... that would be one great class. 😀

thanks, sweetness!

Dude doing well on the MCAT is something to rejoice in. You dont sound like a jerk...lol. Now if you had said, I am better than all of you because I was in the 90th percentile....I might have tried to cook up a spell or something lol. When were you complete MWB?
P.S. You are a dude right? Cuz we had a misunderstanding with sweetness lol.

A belated congratulation to all those who recently (within last few weeks!) received their secondaries to HUCM. I've been staying away from SDN to minimize my anxiety  and to not remind myself of all the interviews/acceptances I'm NOT GETTING YET! (cough cough, HUCM!!!)

All jokes aside, I do think SDN makes me more anxious than I should be, considering it's only November. Here's to hoping we all get at least an ii from HUCM! :luck::luck::luck:

Def they look at the whole application.

OK Im going to test myself. I wont come on here for four days. I find being on here comforting in a way, cuz I know that I am not the only one freaking out silently in my head. But yeah, four days.

See yall Thursday night!!

Yea, I'm a dude lol. I was complete August 19th 🙁 but took a September MCAT (score released mid-October)

Ok - I have been a long time lurker on this thread. I have tried to stay as quiet as possible through this application process. My file has been complete at Howard since 10/25, but I have heard nothing. My file has been complete at a few other places, and still not a word. I am still getting a small trickle of secondary invites from Osteopathic Schools. Most of my friends have been interviewed (some accepted), and I just keep telling myself that it's not entirely too late. It's only November right? Birthday is in 7 days and all I want is an interview invite! :luck:

:welcome: Someone on the thread received an invite on the 1st...Most schools seem to give interviews out every 3-5 weeks, so perhaps we'll hear something before Thanksgiving? Maybe? Possibly? :xf::luck::xf::luck::xf:

Good morning my friends! 🙂 I had an opportunity to speak with Admissions and spoke with Ms. Walk... (She is nice and funny lady! By the way guys, don't give them too many emails!!! 🙂 ) She mentioned that they interview towards April. So if you haven't heard back, we have plenty of time to get an interview. We gotta be patient and strong. Good things will come with the grace of our Lord!
