Wow, what a gunner. sheesh, you make us look like slackers. Anyways congrats on that.

If I'm not black, is it even worth applying here? Are they going to give my app a serious look?

I do have major dope boy swag tho..so maybe that will count towards my blackness

It's not even worth it trying to explain the mission of Howard College of Medicine to u. If u are interested, go educate yourself on their website. And one more thing, GROW UP!!!

Hey, guys!

Just checking in to see the progress! Good luck to you all and I hope to see all of you when you come on your interviews! You early birds, good job! I know the admissions staff always stresses the benefits of turning in everything early so you guys are already a step ahead. Wishing you all the best!

PS. Sorry I've been MIA, school is kicking my butt. Word of advice, enjoy your life before Med school because it will be consumed once you get here!

just got a complete email. mailed out the secondary on monday

I thought they said it takes them 4-6 week or something to let you know that you are "complete". I hope they let me know sooner rather than later, I also submitted the secondary on monday.

I submitted it last Monday! and still have not heard from Howard. 😕

I was hoping to get some help from others who are re-applicants. Does anyone know how Howard feels about replicating / reusing personal statements from your previous application? 😕

When I applied last year my personal statement basically answered the question "Why do you want to become a doctor?". I feel like even if i try to change a few things, the content will be the same. Any advice?

I reused mine, with slight adjustments so it's okay.

That's what I did too.

Also, can you use 100 level courses to fulfill the premed requirements? Esp for Bio or is it better to include the 300/400 levels ones? The only thing is not all the 300 ones have a lab.... either way they have it all the in amcas, just wondering how you guys did it....

Intro levels are fine.

Someone asks this in every HBCU thread. The short answer is "yes".

To you and all the others waiting to hear from the admissions office: be patient! There are not as many people in there as you think and they are intensely hard working people, not robots.

I just noticed that I put in "No" to the question: Do you believe you grew up in a medically underserved area? However, my answer is actually a "yes." If I call Howard University, will they be able to correct this mistake on my Amcas application?

Thanks.

Schools can't change your AMCAS. You'd have to contact AMCAS, but I'm not sure if that's on the list of things they will allow you to change. Check the instruction booklet.

you probably won't be able to change your AMCAS, but I don't see why you can't "correct" that piece of information with the admissions office directly, through email or something. Good luck =)

Mailed secondary on the 13th and got the complete email today 08/18 probably because I live 45 minutes away from Howard lol

I dont know about "dope boy swag" lol.... but Howard is really diverse. In my class there are approx. 20-30% non-black students that range from white, various Spanish descents, middle eastern, Asian, so forth and so on.... I don't know about all of the classes but from what I can see each year its a cornucopia of various races and nationalities here at Howard.

The main reason is that you do not have to be black to have a desire to serve the underserved and erase some of the disparities within the health care system. These are some of Howard's core principals.

Beeweew,

I second that lol. Once you guys are accepted to Howard. Enjoy the last of your free time because all of that will be now called "study time" hahahaha... and sometimes "group study time" lol

I cant wait to meet some of you guys during the interview cycle 😀... You're going to love it here!!!!

I agree with you MWB 🙂

Hey everybody! Super excited for Howard here.

I just have a question about filling out the course work table:
I took classes on the quarter system, so the intro classes were in sets of 3, rather than in two. For the course work table, should I just put my first two courses for each of them? I was even thinking of inserting a row beneath each second course and then adding the third to the new row, but that seems a bit unorthodox and might throw the adcoms off who are certainly used to a second format. Did anyone else here have the same situation or know what to do here? Thanks! 🙂

I took qtr system classes too. i just put first 2 courses of the series.

Honestly, I didn't expect so many of "us" to be complete so early in the process. I am still verifying and I thought I was ahead of "CP time", I can't wait to meet you other gunners.

Don't use phrases like "CP time". Just....no. :wtf:

Good luck to everyone in getting an interview! 👍

You are welcome. It's moving along. I didn't apply to that many schools so i don't expect to hear anything anytime soon. But my hope is in the Lord. I hope your interview goes great. Good luck.

Thank you for your kind words, how is your application going so far?

Hey guys,

Just got the complete email today. I sent mine in on Thursday, but I live pretty close to Howard. It's my top choice, praying we all get in!

+1!!! Good luck =) :xf:

Wow. I thought you were trolling, but from your other posts, I think you are just being unintentionally offensive.

Don't use phrases like "us"and "CP time". Just....no. :wtf:

You thought that was offensive? Lol that was the edited version -- possibly too much time has been spent at my family reunion or watching this boondocks DVD. Sorry to offend. BTW I meant having your application verified in June as being a gunner attitude, but I digress...

Good luck everyone!!! Just waiting for my email.

Finally, after a long hassle, I received a complete email.
Since I am not in the country at this moment, I called to check whether there was any other way of submitting the application quicker. Apparently the person did not like this question and could not help much.
After asking my friend to print out the copies of this application, he sent it on Thursday. Finally complete on Monday!
Good luck everyone! Yes we can.

Does anybody know if we can use AP credit to fulfill a math requirement for Howard? I have a semester of Stats, but I fulfilled my math requirement at my institution with my AP calculus score. Thanks!

Sorry if this has already been addressed, but for the questions that require circling (are you retaking MCAT, parents' education levels) do we just circle the correct response after printing out the form?

You could do that or highlight the word while in ms word and add border. It won't be circled but it will be squared 🙂 i guess you can even highlight it in grey or anything to make your choice clear. Good :luck:

Can any c/o 2015-er please describe the curriculum at Howard right now? I'm really fascinated by the way they're doing things, according to what I found on their site (current students > block schedule). However, that information is 3 years old, so I want to confirm if it's accurate.

Thanks! Oh and wish us luck :xf: 😀

is there word on when interviews start rolling in?

Hey MWB,

In the first year at HU Med, my classes are broken up into five blocks over two semesters:

First semester (2.5 blocks) I'm taking Molecular Biology (Biochemistry), Cell Biology, Tissue Histology, Nutrition, Basic Microbiology, Genetics, Immunology, Clinical Skills, Health Care Systems, Gross Anatomy (I get my body In October :-D), and Structure & Function 1 (Bones, Muscles, Skin). <11 classes>

Second semester (2.5 blocks) gets easier because you have fewer classes. We're taking Structure and Function 2 (Head, Neck, nervous system), Structure and Function 3 (Thorax area - Cardiopulmonary systems, Abdomen, Pelvis), Gross Anatomy 2 and 3 (more with the same body :-D), Nutrition 2, and Global and Environmental Health. <5 classes>.

I used AP Credit for Biology I course. I am pretty sure you can. I just put what it was processed through my institution. Hope this helps and I am not wrong. ahha!

Sent in secondary a week ago, and I love that Howard asks for proof of Indian blood.
