Add me to the list of ppl who had a long time between LOR request and received. At least I know I'm still in the running.

7/8: LOR request
8/29: LOR received

I got the LoR request and LoR received emails within 24 hours of each other. Guess it's random, like everything else in this process.

Mine were within 3 days of each other. I guess they like to keep you on your toes just to screw with you 🙄

Does anyone know how easy it is to reschedule interviews here/be put on a waitlist for a different date? I just scheduled some interviews in the Midwest and want to see if Mayo can squeeze me in while I am up there for those. Is it worth it to email Gina about it?

Just to let you guys know, Mayo is NOT free. It was free last year because of an endowment, but it is definitely NOT free this year.

However, if you get in, you pretty much get free lunch every day 🙂

I'd pay regular tuition to go to Mayo. The free-ness is an extra bonus. Mayo = 👍

The 75% free-ness was what I was referring to. That makes Mayo the cheapest for me by far. I think it's interesting that Mayo makes this a priority, because it frees students from monstrous debt, though it's hardly the main reason I am interested in the school.

And what's this about free lunch? Also, what about a car - is it necessary or too much a hassle?

So good to see you again!

What exactly is Mayo's financial aid policy? I've heard conflicting things about the scholarships/financial aid they give to students. Could someone please explain it? Thanks 🙂

What do you mean by financial aid "policy"? If you could tell us what you heard that was conflicting, we may be able to clarify 😉

Well I heard what was said above, that tuition was free last year, however I've also heard that all students get at least half-tuition scholarships or above. I just wanted to know what type of financial aid (other than loans) and how much Mayo typically gives to its students.

Tuition was free last year due to a last-minute donation from a benefactor. It still holds true that all students get about half-tuition (that's what it was this year) plus need-based grants. It worked about to be about $11,000 for tuition this year for most students after scholarships/grants.

As is the case with any medical school, everyone's financial aid status is different. Some schools may have a benefactor that is willing to fund the education of "Members of the Ayn Rand Fountainhead Essay Writing Society" or the "Todd Rundgren Bang on The Drum All Day appreciation society" but in general those are the things you can't predict. Sometimes the benfactor is willing to fund your entire medical education experience. Sometimes you just win the lottery. Either way, there is no way to tell--just enjoy the application experience while you can and treat it like a night out in Las Vegas rolling the dice.

On the whole--use the MSAR to interpret the debt at graduation numbers. It is the only statistically relevant piece of information that is widely available. As far as I can tell, you'll notice that MMS grad debt is far lower than most every school in the country, if not all. With a very high faculty/student ratio (~10/1), you'll notice that the typical medical school economics (and most everything) are shifted in favor of the students. If you come here to interview, we can talk more about the economics of funding a medical school education and how Mayo is a very willing participant in that situation.

Best of luck applying to medical school!

Mayo totally led me on :L
Got the rejection right before midnight. I was past the LOR stage with great letters (according to my premed advisor).. but no cigar

Just got the LOR request this morning! Does anyone know how necessary it is to "Please ask your letter writers to include your AMCAS identification number on all letters of reference" as I don't think mine did. Didn't think this would be necessary given that they were sent in with the AMCAS letter form.

As far as I know, my letter writers did not include my AMCAS number and it was apparently not a big problem.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Sorry to hear that, Freak.

I really wanted to visit too since I heard great things about it. *shrugs* It's okay. There are other schools out there. Let me know how your interview goes! :luck:

Good luck to the rest of you.

And cold.

When does it start snowing there? Is Rochester close enough for the lake-effect snow?

Rochester isn't close enough for lake-effect snow. Uhmm, the snow varies in Southern Minnesota. Earliest snow can come by late-October and we usually have a decent amount by mid-November. Although, we have had some brown Christmases in the past few years. Most of the snow is in Feb/March with January being the most brutally cold. But Spring weather is crazy. In 2007, we had an 80 degree Monday and a Snow Day on Friday.

Definitely not close enough for lake effect, however Rochester does get its share of winter storms...no surprise there. Snow is funnn you just have to acquire a liking for it (coming from a northern Wisconsin native)

Cleveland is worse in the winter.

hi guys, I'm looking for some advice for my situation b/c I don't really know what I should do right now.

So back at the end of July, I received a LOR request (yay!) from Mayo, and my school's prehealth committee uploaded my letter packet on 8/4. Today I received a rejection from them, but I also found out from my prehealth committee that they've accidentally forgotten to upload some my faculty letters so they had to reupload my packet to AMCAS 2 days ago. I'm afraid that Mayo only saw the old packet when they made the decision. Do you think it's worth it to contact them to let them know, or is it a lost cause? Thanks!

I would attempt to contact Mayo.

What do you have to lose?

What the what? "Accidentally forgotten?" That's awful. Maybe you could ask them to contact Mayo and let them know *they* screwed up--it's certainly worth a shot.

I agree. The worst they can tell you is no, the best is that you might be considered again.

That's awful; I do feel for you. I wish you the best of luck, and I hope Mayo will give you another look. It was not your fault that your letter packet was messed up.

Hi all,

I'm still dragging my heels on my AMCAS app, haven't submitted it. :smack:

Because it's now September, is it absurd to still apply to Mayo?

When is late better than never and when is it just too late?

Thanks for any advice! Good luck, all!

It's not too late yet, but it will be more competitive since you are later. If you have the $100, I'd go for it - you never know what will happen. A student mentioned that one of his classmates submitted on the last possible day, so it definitely happens.

Wait...you still haven't submitted AMCAS, as in you'll be verified in October? That's pretty late. If your stats are terrific, then go for it.

Yes, I think I might be ... in a less than ideal position.

And after I had all my recs lined up in early April too. I was prepping for MCAT instead of finishing my application.

Looks like this will be a two year process.

Any thoughts as to if Mayo regards reapplicants in any particular way? (i.e. some schools look favorably upon reapps, others strongly discourage it.) I ask this because I wonder if I should wait until next year.

Another poster claims that he received LOR ---> rejection last year but LOR ---> interview this year (if memory serves. this thread is waaaay to long to search). I say go for it!

As usual, you are correct.

PP - if you can get it in before the October 15th deadline, I say go for it. It's $100, which in the grand scheme of things, is not the end of the world.

Rejected today. LOR request 7/1. Good luck to the rest of you. One less thread to follow.

Dang it! Sorry Illinois. I was hoping to see you on interview day.

Thanks for the sympathy Leo. Good luck there. I know how bad you want it. Maybe we'll meet somewhere else along the interview trail.

I'm a re-applicant this year--though only in general, not to Mayo--and got a fairly early interview invite. Doesn't exactly prove that re-applicant=Mayo success, (especially given the interview-->acceptance conversion rates) but I don't think Mayo's biased in that regard.

Do you know, is it the deadline for AMCAS verification or the deadline for submission to AMCAS? I'm hoping to have everything in by the end of the week.

Pretty sure it's verification. You have to have submitted to Mayo by the 15th.

You should see last year's thread. At least we haven't yet devolved into serenading any passing Mayo adcoms with Shakespearean-esque dialogue.

Though I swear that if I get an interview, I'm totally writing a sonnet. In iambic pentameter and including a rhyming couplet at the end.

In the effort to avoid bad karma at my interview in a few days, I am fulfilling my erstwhile promise made long ago. Please try not to flame me too hard.

Not ketchup, mustard, nor tasty topping,
The healing school of Mayo, shielded thrice.
He offers wisdom, knowledge, compassion
For all the applicants he might entice.

Before the sun arises, there are moans,
Because at half past one, he sends a fright,
Depending on recipients' time zone,
Request for letters, fees, perhaps invite.

Go forth young pre-med to the icy north
Where Mayo sits, the frozen wellness prince.
Inside the Gonda building, prove your worth,
And touch patients after you wash and rinse.

Here Charles and Will do leave their legacy,
And may their spirit live through you and me.

Awaiting your impressions. 👍

You (and everyone) shall definitely have them. I doubt I'd be able to keep them to myself, even if I wanted to, which I certainly do not.
