Interview invite via snail mail on 9/7. Secondary/application complete on 8/17. 30R/3.3 BS/ 3.8 MS. In-state.

I appreciate your optimism. In the days where I receive only bad news or no news I lose my own optimism.
 
Juuuust wondering about this. I tried to skim the thread to see if this was there but I did not find anything. I apologize if I skipped over the answer.

So I noticed the please return secondary 4 weeks from the email thing now. It's been about six weeks. Does anyone know off hand if this matters? I haven't been really concerned (because I'm doing my best over here) but after getting shut out of the Arizona-Phoenix secondary I'm wondering if I should save 50 bucks?

I guess at this point what's another 50 bucks.

I emailed them about this and they told me that they are not strict with deadline. Good luck!

do they send interview offers or rejections via regular mail, email or both?

True. I would have applied to OU next year if I wasn't successful this time. Almost an hour drive each way for me though... that would have sucked.

What do you think of the whole capstone project they have? From the information online, which is all I have to go by, it seems like it should be optional instead of mandatory. I don't think I would like a project like that being spread over all 4 years that you have to spend time on, taking time away from studying/other courses. Only have the information from the website to go by though of course.
 
Hey everyone,

It seems the application cycle is in full swing (medical school can be like a drug sometimes . . . your perception of time is definitely altered when you're studying CONSTANTLY).

I've definitely seen some interviewees pass by in the cafeteria in Scott Hall recently.

Some advice: this is the sit-and-wait part of the cycle. For some of you who have already interviewed, now you wait for a decision, and, if you've been waitlisted, wait until you get a decision (which, for MOST, although not all, of you won't be until after ~May 15).

For others who are still waiting for an interview, again, patience is a virtue. They hand out interviews through February for April interview dates. I'm not going to say call the admissions office every two seconds or send update letters every week. I don't think it does any good to be completely honest with you.

Don't freak out if you don't hear something a week after you submit your materials. I was in this boat with all of you. It can be frustrating, I know, but freaking out does no good not hearing something immediately does NOT mean you've been rejected.

I repeat: not hearing something immediately does NOT mean you've been rejected. This process takes time.

If anyone has any questions, don't hesitate to ask me.
 
To everyone getting discouraged by the rejections before interviews,
Trust me, I say this from experience. Don't let the rejections get you down. I'm a third time applicant, and the first two times had one and 2 interviews, respectively. I was waitlisted each time throughout the whole cycle until classes started. From my experience, even if you do have to re-apply the most important thing is don't waste time feeling sorry and dejected, get out there, figure out what you can do to be a better applicant and candidate, and get some more experience, re-take the MCAT, maybe do a post-bac if that's what you need to do. Medical school won't be easy when you do get in, so the schools will be impressed by your perseverance and positive attitude toward making yourself a better candidate and future physician. Keep your head up, your time will come.
 
Just send in my secondary few days ago.

Just had my interview here today. Thought it went well enough. Just a word of advice, make sure you know your primary app very well and you can defend everything on it. Other than that, it's a pretty simple interview!

They basically go through your application and ask you to elaborate more on the activities you listed. They asked me why I chose my undergraduate institution. Then after about 40 min of that, they asked whether I had any questions. We talked about some programs at the med school and that was pretty much it. Mine lasted about an hour and ten minutes.
 
That was an interesting interview... topics of discussion included:

+ Bomb threats at high schools
+ What I will do with my career if I have kids
+ My chances at other Michigan med schools
+ Different ways to sub-specialize in peds

I really enjoyed the interview, but it definitely was not what I expected, haha. Very laid back and conversational. My interviewer was really great - the kind of person I would want to have as a mentor in med school.
 
LOVED Wayne. For all those bent on OUWB, I encourage you to check out Wayne first. They are both equally impressive schools.

I got mine in the mail on Sept 9.

It's still early, hopefully yours is on the way! Also... it comes in a small envelope so don't be discouraged if you see that chilling in your mailbox 🙂

Oh and the email notification was sent to me much later--Sept 23. I'm not sure why...

Email today saying that they'd be mailing the official information tomorrow and that it should be at my house in 7-10 days.
 
Hey guys, I'm an M1 at Wayne; I went through all the crap you're going through now, so if anyone has any questions, feel free to post them and I'll try to answer in a somewhat prompt manner (I'm not on here nearly as much as I was when I was an obsessed applicant).

Personally, I think the school is great in very many regards - but that shouldn't be surprising since it was my first choice since high school, when I decided to go to Wayne for undergrad over MSU to be closer to the med school in hopes of getting in. Good luck to you guys, and don't freak out if you aren't hearing from your schools right away, one of the guys in my class was invited in the week before classes started, and missed most of the orientation week, and another friend in my class was literally the last person interviewed, in May, where they organized the whole interview day/tour just for him (he was oos with great stats).

I agree, definitely check out both and pick the one that fits you best.
 
Two complete schools as well. Wayne is established and has a known way that works and great hospitals that deal with under-served communities and well build you to be culturally competent; Oakland is up and coming, innovative, and has a great hospital system with it as well and has smaller class sizes and mandatory lectures.

I am officially at the point where I would not know what to do if accepted to both.

Heh, hope that they don't do to you what the did to me, having one acceptance, settling that that's where you're going, and then getting the other right before decision day, after you had thought you could put all of the application stress behind you.

Yeesh, that sounds rough, I'm sure it happened often last year and will probably happen again as both of these schools seem like the realistic shot for the "typical" Michigan applicant. I myself have a preference 😉, but I don't want to add or take away from anyone's biased opinion.

Wayne has a high number of spots, but it seems like every other medical school outside U of M is comparable in their entering class (MSUCOM might have lower number stats, but I imagine they are more critical in regards to extracurricular being a DO school). With the two new schools opening up soon at CMU and WMU, I wonder if that will change. I have a feeling that that such an influx of schools, in such a short period of time, will have, beyond the lowered selection standards, a lowering in educational standards due to a sudden large faculty vacuum. OU has the advantage of riding at the front of this tidal wave, so it'll at least be able to have some sort of established reputation to draw students in, but I'm very curious to know what the quality of the WMU's medical school will be, with it being the last of the three to be opened.

I really hope this trend, with current medical schools raising their capacities, and so many new schools opening, doesn't end up doing to the medical field what the rise of crap law schools did for the legal field...

Honestly, WMU concerns me as well and CMU is out there; I just wonder what types of clinical experiences the students will be doing with the healthcare systems out in practically the middle of nowhere Michigan. I'm sure the schools will put together something reputable and I trust the LCME will help regulate the schools to produce adequate if not excellent physicians to help lessen the severity of the physician shortage.
 
Not to totally side-track this thread, but I also agree. The reason OU will work/is working is because Beaumont was a great health system that has tons of experience in GME - even before having anything to do with a medical school.

You can't really say the same for CMU and WMU. CMU has Central Michigan Community Hospital, but that is small and I doubt the variety of things that they see there. Everyone from that area goes at least to Lansing when they have medical issues, though most go to GR, AA or Detroit...

I just think OU has a staff of consummate professionals from the dean, Dr. folberg, all the way to every single staff member and they are going to make OU into a stellar school. I mean for someone in your position with your stats I don't know if OU is even likely, but let me tell you, Oakland is going as far as a brand new Chevy volt on a fully charged battery woth no gas in the tank.
 
Wayne will for sure give you a more diverse clinical experience, can't really say one is better than the other in all aspects, ou does a great job of selling itself making people think its on the way up while wayne is on the way down, bit I think wayne will be higher than ou for at least a decade and harper is still ranked higher than beaumont by us news and world report. Just a couple things to think about

One of Wayne's big strengths is it's clinical selection. Beaumont RO is probably the second "best" hospital in the state, and in itself better in many ways to any one hospital Wayne works with, however there isn't a chance that you'll get the same clinical diversity that you'd have with Wayne simply because you don't get Detroit. Where else in the state, let alone the US, will you see many cases of trench foot (TRENCH FOOT!)? I wish the system wasn't so political, and that Wayne and OU could collaborate, so we could get some access to Beaumont, and OU get access to the DMC. Everyone would win.
