2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Received an email interview invitation from the South Texas (San Antonio) VA this morning. Now I just need some sites to respond back with dates so I know when to schedule this interview!

Congrats Irish! That looks like a great site. What track did you apply to?

Yay, after almost a 2 week drought. I got an interview at KKI (CFT and peds consult tracks) 🙂

I'm with clients all day today, otherwise I'd wear a helmet and a cup to get ready for what will hopefully be a full day of invites (and possibly rejections, hence the protective gear). Best of luck to all!

Just got an email offer to interview at McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School.

Rejection from brown. WTF. ARRRGGH hate this process.

The only thing I'm hearing thus far today is crickets 😛 at least I'm getting an Internet signal though. Won't have cell phone reception for several more hours.

I did as well, very discouraging. I mean, I really wanted to be on campus with Hermione Granger... whaaat?!

It's still early in the game though and if you applied to more than 15 sites, rejections are more likely than invites. With that said- my anxiety is like 7/10 right now.

Hang in there!

Just got an email invite from the Brown Child Track 🙂

Oops! just jinxed myself in a good way! Got an interview from Appalachian regional healthcare! Offer came via email.

Ditto on the rejection from Brown (Adult Clinical track) and interview invite to Harvard/McLean.

Talk about ups and downs! Congrats to those of you getting good news today!!

Invite from Brown NP track. no word on west coast sites I wanted. There is already a conflict in schedules that I made: so I have to think of a way to ask a TD to reschedule me since I double booked a site 🙁

NOTHING on my end since my 2 rejections a couple weeks ago. Yest was my bday, so I appreciated no bad news, but I'm ready to hear something now! You would think, having applied to a million sites, I'd be hearing more news... :eyebrow:

In addition to the lint roller and Febreeze, I'd recommend shoe polish* and a nicely pressed shirt before each interview. I was able to travel with a suit bag and my shirts wrapped in individual hanging bags from the cleaners, which allowed me to skip the $5+/shirt pressing charge at the hotel. A former biz mentor of mine gave me the tip that individually bagging each shirt cuts down on the amount of friction exerted on the shirts, which reduces the likelihood of wrinkles. Go figure.

I carried around a hand steamer with me, but I had mixed results. Hanging a shirt/pants/whatever in the bathroom while you shower can help, as can some touch up ironing. I prefer to travel with multiple suit options (another hold over from my biz travels), but you can get by with one suit as long as you take care of it. Sites understand the financial limitations of the interview process, so don't worry about bringing a ton of options. I interviewed at a place where the girl's bag was sent with the wrong flight, and she interviewed in jeans and a knock-around shirt. Life happens. It can be helpful to travel in business attire (if you can do it comfortably). I've found I rarely get flagged for searches and in the event my bags disappears, I can still look good even if I have a valid excuse.

*A sharply dressed person with unpolished shoes sticks out. You don't need $500 shoes, just treat your $30 shoes with some care.

Thanks for the pointers!

I think I am going to go take a beta-blocker right now...I am supposed to hear from Dallas VAMC, Boston Consortium, and [it looks like] Brown today...Oh and for all y'all that were obsessive enough to check the time that Boston sent out invites/rejections last year it was like 6pm or something! Guess that's better than midnight haha. I also have the lyrics to that 8 mile song in my head right now

palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy...:barf:

Just got an email from Michigan State University CC for an interview. Apparently the only onsite interview day they offered was 1/21, but they also do phone and skype interviews.

Good luck to everyone!

Acceptance calls + follow up emails started this week for the White River Junction VA.

Hooray Dragonstyle! That's so exciting.

Has anyone gotten a rejection from Kennedy Krieger??? I applied there, and thought that I was a really good fit, but I haven't heard anything and it sounds like interview invites went out last night/this morning. Not sure if I should be freaking out or not:xf:

Hey question--

Is anyone else waiting to respond to interview invites? I feel like I want to hold off a little bit (1 week) with responding since so many of my sites share the same dates and I am expecting to hear back in the next week.

I know I risk losing a more popular date if others respond before me, BUT I don't want to risk having to change dates when I already committed.

Does it look bad if you don't respond right away?
Does it look bad if you commit to a date and have to reschedule?

Ugh today is SO stressful! So I'm trying to employ some of my own coping strategies. See below. Any other recommendations are welcome.

*Drink special hot drinks (drinking pumpkin latte right now)
*Wear comfy clothes
*Deep breathing, square breathing (inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 6, hold 2)
*Reframe how I'm thinking: It won't be important which sites rejected me in a month, much less a year. In 10 years I probably won't even remember most sites I applied to.
*Eat something healthy but really good
*Watch a comedy (Disaster Date is working okay right now)
*Remind myself of something I'm looking forward to other than this process ending (seeing my family over the holidays)
*Text friends about my misery
*Read entertaining books written by smart people with more perspective than I have

This is something I've been wondering about too. But I'm going with responding right away. I responded to Harvard within 25 mins of their email and already the day I wanted was gone.

I figure you can't lose the interview offer once they make it, but still, I'm a bit too anxious/nervous about delaying responses. Not sure of the impression it gives...

I was just talking about this with some friends. I would imagine that it depends on each site. I asked the person I spoke with when they wanted me to get back to them. I do think though, that with a system as up and down as this, in that you are never sure how many interviews you may get, I wouldn't run the risk of offending or losing an interview spot because you waited too long. There are going to be conflicts, but I guess I would go with working them out as they come up. That may not be everyone's strategy, but it's what I will go with. Good luck!

WELL, if I got an interview at Harvard I'd respond right away too!

I guess that's the issue...I am waiting to hear from my top sites so I want to "save myself" for a possible invite

That song always reminds me of Obama because some commentator declared that as his theme song the night HCR passed.

I'm a Spartan! Go Green! 👍 We play Duke tonight so this day is doubly nerve-wracking... Any time now, Boston Consortium (or any of the other 17 sites I'm waiting on).

I responded to harvard within minutes. When I didnt reply to Dartmouth, they called me the next morning.

I've asked multiple colleagues currently on internship about date conflicts and rescheduling, and thus far, everyone has said that it's fairly common, and that sites don't seem to look down on it.

I attempted to reschedule one of my own interviews based on this feedback, and while the site wasn't able to change my date (because they'd already set individualized meetings with supervisors of interest), they were very nice about it.

I'd recommend contacting the secretary/admin assistant/etc. first, though, rather than the TD...unless the TD is directly handling interview scheduling.

As for waiting to respond--I haven't done so yet, but that may largely be because fortunately/coincidentally, the sites I've heard from thus far have predominantly been in my pre-ranked upper-tier.

... MGH Adult invites also went out...

I just got a rejection email from UCLA.

I need more acceptances, this is getting too stressful!!

Rejection email from UCLA came out. The first one burns a bit but will help me ease into the next few that are surely coming too. The email suggested they were still finalizing the list so invites may not arrive immediately.

I finally got my first notification - interview with Utah State University CAPS. Finally!

*edit* They only offer phone interviews from December 13-21.

3 interviews 2 official rejections so far...yuck! Want more interviews :scared:

Got rejection emails from Dartmouth (child) and Applewood Center. Boo!

Did anyone hear from duPont yet? It looks like they sent out interview invites in late November last year.
Also, the Institute of Living at Hartford Hospital lists their notification deadline on APPIC as December 15, but their website says December 1. Anyone have any ideas about this?
Obviously my anxiety has taken over

No worries, 3/5 is definitely a good turnout thus far, and--if the trend continues--would lead to an above-average number of interviews.

But yes, I know the feeling. I won't be noticing a significant reduction in my own anxiety levels until I'm at the 8-10 interview mark, at which point I figure base rates alone would dictate I'll match somewhere 🙂

I have 3 interviews, 3 rejections. It's just confusing, I have no idea if I'll end up with more rejections or interviews!

Has this site become slow for anyone else? There's probably hundreds of us clicking refresh every few seconds...

Just got an email invite from Yale's Division of Substance Abuse (offering January 7 which is already a conflict... ugh, how bad is it to ask YALE for another date?)

This is so crazy anxiety provoking...

So happy for you Markro311. Beautiful area. It seems like some counseling centers are starting to notify.🙂
