2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I would interview in person at a top priority site if possible. I guess it depends on how many interview offers you have. Maybe UCLA can be flexible with interview dates if you explain the situation to them? I would try to see if you can schedule a different time to have an in-person interview at UCLA.

I just got my first interview (YAY!!!) to Center for Aging Resources in Pasadena. I am BEYOND excited!! In case anyone is wondering, it came in the form of an email, personalized at least with my first name, and they are interviewing morning and afternoon on January 20th.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!

That's fantastic! Congratulations!!! 🙂

Still waiting on my first invite, but it's BOUND to come any day now.... :xf:

congrats! I was very impressed by people that are able to go through this process more than once! I would def. have PTSD symptoms. The people that i know of who applied a second time around matched.

EEEEEEEEEEEEK! I'M SO EXCITED!!! Got an interview invite from Oregon Health and Sciences Univ (OHSU) today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of my very favorite sites! Offer came via e-mail and seems like all interviewees were BCC'd in.

Me too!

My phone just rang with "BLOCKED" on the caller ID, and I jumped to answer it, thinking it might be an internship site, and guess what guys??? I just won round-trip airfare for two to anywhere in the continental United States and all they need is my credit card information to "verify my identity"! Must be my lucky day! :bang:

LOL... whenever I get those kinds of calls, I usually string the jerk along for a while. The thought that you juuuussssstttt might give them your credit card information usually keeps them on the line for a few jokes. 😀

It is, I am sure!! I keep trying to remind myself that it is only December 1st... SO early! There are two FULL weeks to go, and because I'm obsessive (organized?) I kept all my rejections from last year... and realized I got like 10 notifications on the 14th and 15th. Hang in there. It's coming!

Thanks for all the support 🙂. And congrats to everyone getting interviews today... it's been busy, it seems!

Just got an interview at UCLA Semel -- one of my top choices! However, I've already committed to other interviews for the two days that UCLA is holding open houses. In their email, UCLA said you will not be penalized for doing a phone interview, but of course, common sense and my grad school application experience has told me that it is a big disadvantage to do a phone interview rather than an in-person interivew. Neither of my other two programs will allow me to switch interview dates, leaving me with two options: Do the phone interview with UCLA Semel, or cancel the interview with one of my other sites that is not as high of a priority as UCLA. What do you guys think? Anyone heard of someone getting a site where they phone interviewed?

For what it's worth:
I've heard of people getting ranked without a in-person interview. My friend is a current intern at UCLA and I asked him about this. He said it's more of an openhouse and it shouldnt hurt you--however, i'd personally want to go

Just got an email rejection from U of Memphis CC.

I don't have any hard numbers to back this up, but I get the feel that accepting multiple students from the same program is fairly uncommon.

However, I don't know if this is based more on the program's choice, or on the behind-the-scenes chaos that occurs during the ranking and matching process.

I have heard that the internships have the option of checking a box on their end to not accept more than 1 student per site during the matching process, but it's up to the site. Just looking at my program, we had 2 students each go to two different sites last year (though at one site it was 2 different tracks).

It really depends on the program and the site. We have sites that have historically been good matches for our program, and it is very common for two of us to match at the same site, same track even. Right now, my program's six current interns are at 3 sites- with each site taking two! However, most these sites take more than 8 applicants each year.

Speaking of school psych, got an interview today at LAS*PIC in Louisiana!

Thanks for the replies everyone! Was just curious since our program has 10+ applicants this year and there aren't that many sites. It seems like a lot of us have obtained interviews at the same sites as well.

hi - does anyone know if sites will accept multiple interns from the same university?

This is only anecdotal, but two or three years ago, the cincinnati VA took 4 or 5 people from my program for internship (university of indianapolis). I don't imagine that is super common, but it does happen.

Thanks for updating the list!

Noticed though that two of my sites are on both lists? what does the "not offered" mean then?

Thats a nicer way of saying people received rejections. But it indicates that they have sent out rejections. The first list indicates those sites have sent interviews, while the second indicates the sites have sent out rejections. If a site isn't on both lists, it has only sent one and not the other. Hope that helps.

I absolutely LOVE this list - thank you madeincanada for updating and posting it for us! 😀

Forgot to mention for the list: Ottawa has sent out rejections (or at least started doing so)

I'm curious: when multiple interview dates are offered by a site, do any of you have a strategy you're using when you indicate preferences? For example, consistently going for the earliest dates you can get, or the latest?

Did anyone else apply to RAMS in SF? I'm waiting for them too...

You're welcome.

I have been using the idea posted earlier in this thread about creating a calendar and writing down all possible dates that all of my applied sites are offering. I have chosen based upon geographic location, as well as days which are least likely to conflict with another site.

Honestly, right now I'm going with the date that causes the least amount of conflict with other interviews/potential interviews OR putting it near another interview that could be done in the same trip. I have 4 interviews so far and since I knew the interview dates ahead of time (they published them on their websites), I picked ones that wouldn't conflict but....it's getting increasingly difficult. Two kind of have to be combined into one big trip but I don't want to book it yet because a few other sites have interviews that would occur during the big trip (it would still be possible to go to them, but the big trip would have to be significantly altered). Plan ahead as much as possible to reduce conflict!

Gotcha! For some reason, I thought it denoted open houses. I'm a bit brain dead after a month of applying to sites! Applying to my last one today.

There's a site that took like, 8 people from my program last year... definitely not the norm for most sites...

at this point I'm just going to camp out in new england for the first week of january lol. Being terrible at scheduling is not helping me.

From Berea Children's Home & Family Services this evening...

Dear Applicants,
We have been offline at work for the past 5 days due to a severe network meltdown. We did not expect the problem to last this long. We are about half way through the applications but have not been able to complete the review process. I apologize. Our IT department is telling us that we may not be up and running again until Monday. We will do our best to have the reviews done by December 7th. I will keep you all posted. I realize this is a stressful time for all of you and am sorry to add to your stress. I have a blackberry so I can at least access my email during the day should you have any questions.

at least they kept me posted!

haha, kinda funny considering they can log in from anywhere. Reviewers can log in and download apps at will. I guess they use the net in a different way to communicate.

The los angeles ambulatory care center just sent out an email inviting me for an interview!

Wow, congratulations!! That's awesome... what a way to end the day 🙂. Was it a personalized email (like with your name) or generic, like dear applicant...?

Am I the only one who hasn't heard from Brown? Anyone else still waiting?

I was wondering if anyone knew of any ethical dilemmas/vignettes that sites ask you about during interviews? I would like to practice some vignettes (esp child oriented ones) but I don't have any resources.

Thanks!

I got my first interview invite today!! It was for the Salem VA. I also got my fourth rejection. It was from the Dallas VA. I need more interviews! Is it bad that I have 4 rejections and only one interview? I am still waiting to hear from 12 sites.

I'm in the same boat, PsychS. From what I know about people applying in the past, its not that uncommon to get a few rejections early on and then see things get better.

Congratulations!! I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry too much that you have more rejections than interviews... there really (truly!!) is no rhyme or reason to when you get interviews vs rejections... you might have a string of interviews coming just around the corner! Chin up. At least you have that one interview, which to me means your application is strong enough to GET interviews... so, there must be more upcoming!😀 Hang in there!!

I've been listening to the comedy station on slacker radio and to audio books to keep myself from worrying when I have down time. That helps a little.
