I realize that there is no way for "no interview" not to feel like a major disappointment and a personal rejection. But as someone on the other side of this process (eg: receiving applications and sending No interview emails) I'd like to just throw this in the mix. It is your application, not you the person, they are saying "no" to (sometimes with a sigh of regret) and it is very often a host of factors far beyond your control (or their's) that are in the equation. Elements like dissertation progress, specific experience with a specific population, fit between your expressed goals and what the site can deliver, need for specific gender/language/ethnicity/skill set, prior experience with students from a specific program (positive or negative), and a host of other site-specific variables that lead to the "outcome" of "no" or "yes". We would often like to meet many more of the applicants to our site than we can reasonably manage to interview given staff limitations and the realities of the Match numbers. It is a painfully stressful process for all involved. So hang in there and do your best to not feel de-valued by a process that is way bigger than anyone can quite get under control.
