2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I really hope they notify earlier! My friend applied there last year and it was one of the last sites to notify. They also offered her only one date, which overlapped with another interview she had in a different city and she wasn't able to make it.

Here's a quote from their brochure (which you can download from their website) "Prospective candidates will be notified by via e-mail on December 15, 2010, whether or not they were granted an interview." Not sure about the whole "by via e-mail on" part...but it looks like they'll be a last minute offer/rejection. On their APPIC website, they say the interview includes "an assessment and a clinical interview". ....an assessment? 😕 Sounds odd, unless they mean some sort of assessment of "fit" with the site or just a general assessment of applicants...but it still just sounds strange to point it out in that way.... thoughts??

Just got 2 email rejections within minutes of one anohter....Westchester Jewish Family Services & Devereux Institute (Philadelphia) 🙁

Does the Devereux Institute still have a crazy amount of supplemental materials required? I remember they had 6-7 additional things in addition to the APPI, transcripts, TD sign off letter, etc. I didn't apply there.

Anyone else just get an email from Phoenix Children's Hosp that started with "Applicant Interview Notification" in huge bold letters at the start of the e-mail but was actually a rejection? I kind of expected a rejection from them as they started sending out invites quite a while ago, but the first three words made me think I got an interview... It seems like it's one step short of saying "INTERVIEW!!! You don't have one! :meanie:"

Ah well... I'm at 4 interviews, 3 rejections, and 1 site withdrew from the match (late loss of funding)

If you can keep a 50% rate going you should be in good shape. I'm not sure how things have changed since everything went online, but I was told that you want at least 50% because that would be ~7 sites sites back when the average was 15, and 7 seemed to be the magic number they cite every year.

I suppose I should be over being surprised when people who are supposedly so in tune with others (clinical psychologists!) do totally thoughtless things like send rejections that sound like invites, but alas, I am not.

I was shocked at some of the rejection e-mails I received from sites. I exchanged a few of the harsher/blunter ones with friends.

Putting out an APB for the following sites...anyone know if any of these places have started sending out invites (or know when invites might be sent out)?

Marcus Autism Center
Family Service & Guidance Center (Topeka,KS)
UNC - Chapel Hill (TEACCH and CIDD tracks)
Northeast Oklahoma Psych. (Tulsa Center for Child Psych track - I know the forensic track has already sent out invites)
Univ of Tennessee (in Memphis - St Jude's track)
The May Institute
The Watson Institute

Not yet - and now I'm curious what track Gangreen applied too. 🙂

Sorry...it was a mass email as my peer received the same invite. I applied for the Peds/Health Track. Hopefully this helps. I am hopeful that we'll all end up where we are meant to be.

ThisIsCrazy, no pressure to reveal your identity. I respect your need for anonymity... I'm down for the weird staring ppl down if that makes you more comfortable!

I hadn't noticed this before, thanks for pointing it out! I have no idea what they mean... Could it be that part of the interview will be on our assessment skills? Or maybe they give us some kind of test...? Sounds bizarre.

Anyone have any idea what this means?? This is at Children's Hospital LA.

I only checked the HTVMH line, so I assume my app only goes to them, as their would be no reason to send mine over to the UM-DHP folks/training cordinators.

The brochure states that you are placed (funded) at one site, but can do one rotation outside the funding site. My understanding from the supplemetary sheet is that you are indicating you want to be considered by both, but ultimately, you will only be chosen by one. I do not think you can rank both, because you're only gonna be interviewed by one.

you can rank both. Also, the VA peeps get a rotation at UM if those interns at the University want VA rotations; they kind of exchange.

They probably give you a bunch of test data (e.g, WISC-IV, WIAT) and ask you to put it together and come up with a formulation/diagnosis

So, I had high hopes for this week, and it's been a dud thus far. Anyone else?

I know people have heard from Minneapolis VA's general track and Yale's consultation center, but has anyone heard from the neuropsych tracks at either?

No, in Long Beach CA.

I really hope they notify earlier! My friend applied there last year and it was one of the last sites to notify. They also offered her only one date, which overlapped with another interview she had in a different city and she wasn't able to make it.

Do you happen to remember which date the interview ended up being on, when your friend had to turn it down? There are so many that haven't listed their interview dates!!

Is anyone else waiting to hear from Wisconsin Dep't of Correction? They will be sending notifications tomorrow, according to what they said. I find myself anxiously waiting, even though I still have plenty of other sites to hear from...

Also, I have three sites on my list from the NY psychiatric group which was annouced yesterday to cut # of slots due to lack of funding. Don't want to be pessimistic, just trying to accept the reality that these sites instantly became 2x or 3x more competitive as a result, specifically Hudson River and Pilgrim Psych Center. Not trying to raise anxiety for people, just wanted to share.

I'm waiting to hear from WI DOC...good luck tomorrow!

I'm with ya!... one rejection on tues, a "we arent done looking at apps" on wed and nothing else... Oh well. No one seems to have heard from any of my sites either way, so that is good at least. An interview invite is exactly what I need right now... C'mooooon FRIDAY!!! 🙄

I am also waiting for the watson institute and have heard nothing from anyone, either on this site or personallly 🙁

Got an invite from Nassau University Medical Center.

Rejections from University of Pittsburgh CC and Suffolk University CC

University of Pittsburgh Counseling Center has sent out invitations (seems to be a mass e-mail). They give a number of both on-site and telephone options.

I'm 2 for 2, yay! 15 more sites, hopefully I can squeeze another 3-5 interviews out of those.

Has anyone heard anything from Mt. Washington Ped. Hospital?

Is it just me, or is it really slow this morning?

This WEEK has been slow. I'm sad it's Friday haha. 2 days of zero possibilities on the weekend. But maybe I'll actually be more productive.

So, I just talked to a postdoc at one of the prac sites I work at about how horrible this emotional experience is. He told me that this experience gets progressively worse until Match day and that everyone will be driven to utter insanity. I already feel crazy and I know others in my cohort all do too, so I'm looking forward to the next 2.5 months AAAAH. Not good since the psych hospital in town is booked during the holidays!!
🙄

It's dead this morning, and this week... I'm incapable of getting anything done and I love how this is all I can think about. The only thing that helps is going for a run. This ends up meaning that I take one every single day. I'm waiting on *so* many sites!

I just got an interview with FCI Fort Worth! 🙂 I now have 2 interviews, 4 rejections, and I am waiting to hear from 11 sites. I want to hear from more today. I hope I do!

Is it just me, or is it really slow this morning?

It is slow, and I am trying hard to get out of this OCD habit of refreshing my email every 5 min.
M Wise Mind (or whatever is left of it) is telling me I need to get my full attention to non-Intennshp stuff, and the compulsive page refresh doesn't make sense anyway because a) I have no control of the situation at this point, and b) most of notifications will come by or on Dec 15, and only then I have the whole picture (hopefully) of the outcome. But my other mind (s) are winning at times in getting me emotionally disregulated:scared:I am somewhat comforted by the thought that I am not the only one in that sticky situation. I am so glad this forum exists. Good luck to all today and after 🙂

Hmm... well, I can offer you the opposite perspective. I applied last year and am currently on internship at my top site (yippeee) and I can honestly say that the worst part for me was submitting the applications. The waiting afterwards is tedious and I know this is a bad place to suggest this, but trying to guestimate about sites you haven't heard from by keeping tabs on what others have heard will only make things worse. There is no rhyme or reason to it. Thankfully, I only discovered SDN after I'd secured a spot, cause I really think this sort of shared freakout setting would have been irresistable to me as well. 😉

But to offer a bit of sunshine, INTERVIEWS ARE ACTUALLY FUN! Just avoid the "let's compare qualifications" applicants. You do not have to impress them. Save that talk for the people who matter. Good luck, guys! :luck:

Ever since they changed over to an online app the invite process has been pretty hectic, and many more sites extended their deadlines to accommodate glitches. I know the first year through we had problems accessing the submitted apps. I didn't get consistant access to mine until about 2 wks before notification. Many sites have a multi-step process of review, so that takes time. Hang in there everyone, the sites are probably super busy reviewing everything and trying to get their own work done.

I feel like most of us feel like we should be hearing back from sites right now, because we want to (and I absolutely include myself in this category). It has been a really slow week for me, I think mostly because I have applied to all college counseling centers. I have been told that most of them won't have the time to review and select until things slow down with finals and the end of semesters. Regardless, I am still checking my email like an obsessed person, which is only slightly more so than my normal amount. I just can't wait until I start hearing back from all my sites. I've got 3 that I've heard from, and still 22 left to go.

Has anyone heard anything from Mt. Washington Ped. Hospital?

Since they had a late submission deadline I'm going to guess they'll notify later. Also this is their first year being APA accredited so I'm sure they had a lot more applicants than before!

just got rejection from NYU rusk institute. add that to rejections from boston consortium and rush. no interviews yet, still waiting to hear from 12 programs. i'm beginning to fear that i won't get an interview anywhere...

don't go losing hope just yet. if you haven't heard from 12 sites, then you know you you're still in it for those. Gotta stay positive!

While the interviews seem anxiety provoking, it is pretty interesting to see the kind of options out there. There will be some gunners, but most of you will be in the same boat. I saw the same 2 people 3 of my sites, so we compared notes at each stop. It was interesting to see how my ranks changed throughout my travels. Don't get your hearts set on one site because a lot can and will probably change.

I felt the same way. I got four rejections in a row, but then I got two interviews in a row. Don't worry. After I got the four rejections I told myself that I still had a lot to hear from and that I wasn't out until they all rejected me. You still have 12 left! You never know, they could all offer you interviews!

If it's any consolation, last year's interns had less than great things to say about training at Hudson.

I just got an interview with FCI Fort Worth! 🙂 I now have 2 interviews, 4 rejections, and I am waiting to hear from 11 sites. I want to hear from more today. I hope I do!

Congrats! I am waiting to hear from two East Coast Prisons. Fingers crossed! :xf:

I'm glad someone else applied to an arguably excessive number of sites! 😉

I got this this morning RE Albany Consortium:

"A notice was sent out on the APPIC list that suggested we will have only two (2) positions next year. This is NOT true. "We will only be reduced by one slot. We will match five (5) interns for next year.

Rejection from Pilgrim Psychiatric in NY. At least I know!

Wow...I think this is the year of epic fail rejections!
Same exact thing happened to me...

Anyway, just got a rejection from Pilgrim Psychiatric Center. Last year they had around 95 applicants, interviewed ~30, and had 6 spaces. This year due to cut funding they only had 3 spaces. So I'm guessing that they may be interviewing even less people this time around...or at least that's what I'm telling myself.

3 offers/5 rejections, 12 more to go...

Has anyone else heard from Western Psych? It's one of my top sites - I know one person got an interview, but I'm hoping against hope that not all of their offers have gone out!

WPIC sent out interview offers yesterdays. I got an interview 😀

I'm in the same boat. Applied, but haven't heard anything. I'm assuming it's a rejection.

Email invite to Pilgrim Psychiatric Institute. I'm super excited because it's my first interview offer. 🙂

Email invite to Cherokee Health Systems around 3:30 or so Eastern Time.

Hi everybody! I'm new to the site. Here is what I have so far - rejections from FMC, Rochester and Atascadero SH. Invitations from Syracuse VA and Arkansas Behavioral Health. I received the same email from Albany Consortium. I just got back from a 4 hour hike - getting out and about is how I am taking care of myself through this crazy, stressful process. One more hanging in there with everyone else. Good luck, everybody! 🙂

I just received an invitation from Mt. Washington in the form of a personalized email. Interview dates are Jan. 4, 11, and 18th. Good luck to those still waiting to hear!

Don't give up hope if others have interviews and you haven't heard back! That does not mean a rejection is coming. People started hearing back from Children's Memorial earlier this week and I thought it was a lost cause, but I got an interview just now. So I am back to believing that no news IS good news!
