2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats to everyone with interviews!!

I'm starting to feel really anxious. I have NO interviews yet. I applied to 24 sites and have heard back 3 no's (Casa pacifica, Johns Hopkins (knew that was a way long shot), and Spring Grove Hospital in MD) and 1 what sounds like a waiting list or the "maybe pile depending on how other applicants work out" (Arkansas Division of Behavioral Health Services).

I know I still have 20 sites to hear back from, but not hearing anything makes me fear that they are no's since it seems like many sites notify the interviews first. ugh 🙁 It just seems like everyone already has at least 1 interview if not several scheduled (or completed!).

Got an interview at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center!! My first "real" interview (have one w/ the Navy, but as I understand it that is kind of a given)!!! I'm so EXCITED!!!! :soexcited::soexcited::soexcited:

Only dated offered was Dec 20th, but they expressed some willingness to reschedule if absolutely necessary.

IsItOver - Are you interviewing in Bethesda or San Diego for the Navy?

I just received the official rejection from Mississippi...bummer. It is a great site, congrats to those who have gotten interviews there!

So sorry! Rejections such! Which Mississippi site was it? I applied to the Consortium there (Really now just Pine Grove) but haven't heard anything yet (except for an email making sure I knew they are now a single entity internship program). I know they said they were notifying interviews between 12/3-12/6 and rejections around 12/10. So I'm thinking no news from them so far probably isn't a good thing.

It was University of Mississippi Medical Center/V.A. Medical Center Consortium

As difficult as it is, try not to let it get you too down just yet. Based on what I've heard from peers, as well as what was posted on here last year, many invites continue to go out right up until the site deadlines. Each site's review process is slightly different, and many may not have even been able to begin reviewing applications until recently.

I'd just like to echo this... hang in there! You still have SO MANY sites to hear from! Several of my peers have yet to get interviews, as well, so you are not alone. It just depends on the sites you applied to! What helps me a little in waiting for my still-to-come 18 sites is looking to see if anyone has heard from the sites on this forum... especially the popular ones (VAs, for example). If no one on here has mentioned it, then there really isn't any cause at all for worry! Of course the list here isn't exhaustive and even if someone hears, it doesn't mean you will get negative news, and yada yada, but still, it kind of helps when no one has heard from the sites I'm waiting on. No news IS still good news. It means you haven't been cut! Hang in there Erely 🙂. I'll look forward to your post when you get your first interview 👍.

Thanx for the 411, AcronymAllergy! Here's hoping we hear back from our remaining sites this week -- I, too, have 8 more sites that have me checking and rechecking email. LOL

I'm waiting to hear back as well, fingers crossed for both of us!

On another note, has anyone received rejections from Kennedy Krieger or Harvard/Mass General? I know people have been invited to interview, but I'm still waiting to hear anything 🙄

Congrats to everyone getting interviews today! Looking forward to a busy next 9 days 😱

Congratulations! 🙂 I applied to their adult program, but have not heard anything yet. Both experiences look amazing, plus New Mexico is absolutely beautiful!

they have an APA accredited adult program???? I wish I knew. I love New Mexico, and rent is really decent there!!! I applied to the Southwest Consortium, which I thought was the only accredited adult program in NM. Bummer that I missed out!

UNM Health Sciences Center doesn't seem to have an adult track (just clinical child, pediatric neuro, and early childhood). Here's a link to their website:

Srei, maybe you applied to a different program in NM?

Got an interview from Cornell (a MAJOR reach for me! Some friends heard rejections as well) via email- only 2 potential dates on 1/13 and 1/14.

I also heard from VA in Atlanta via a very nice email from TD w/ dates on 1/7, 1/10, and 1/19. They got 134 applications and are interviewing 18 people for 3 slots. Geez that's tough. Good luck everyone!

I have two classmates who haven't heard a thing from anyone yet. Don't lose hope - there is still plenty of time left and a lot of sites wait til the very last minute! :luck::luck::luck:

Wow, that is a pretty stringent whittling-down; congrats on making the cut 🙂 I'd wanted to apply to the Atlanta VA myself, but unfortunately, they didn't over a neuro focus. I know a current intern who seems to be enjoying the site, though.

thanks!! I have never been to the South (except New Orleans) so I thought I'd give it a shot. Is your friend a more research-oriented or clinically-oriented person? I think they have a neuropsych rotation, but it's def not a track/specialization (I only did generalist programs). I also can't believe they're only interviewing 18 applicants (most NY sites interview 40 or so ppl!).

Just got a call from the Denver VA! Voicemail said interview would be January 3rd from 8-4.

hey guys, i've been following the thread for a while, but wanted to post today b/c no one has yet mentioned hearing from the LA Ambulatory VA recently. I just got an invitation to interview there today, and i had ruled them out b/c I didn't hear a few weeks ago when someone else on the thread said they had.

I also was invited to the Atlanta VA today. I'm up to 6 interviews, 1 rejection. Fingers crossed for the rest. Good luck everyone!

I'm actually not sure exactly how the classmate leans...I believe it'd be a fairly even split, perhaps 60/40 in favor of research. That's a bit of a guess on my part, though.

And yep, I did see mention of potential neuropsych-y experiences, but like you said, there wasn't a specific track. Definitely seems like a great site, though, which is why I was bummed I didn't apply.

Ditto!!! Woohoo! They had interviews on January 24th too, but when I called back they said 1/24 was almost totally booked. Luckily, I got it. They told me, too, that the interview is all day, 8-4:30. Good luck!

Also jut got a rejection from Northport VA in NY. Generic, non-personalized. They are very competitive, so I wasn't really expecting an interview anyway...

Thanks so much for the encouragement!! I really appreciate it! Good point about noting the sites that have been mentioned on here. I have not seen many of the ones I applied to (I applied to mostly sites that that focus on work with adolescents). My fingers are still crossed!

Just got a big fat rejection from UVA CC. It was in my spam folder, so if you applied look there. 🙁 Congratulations to those who scored an interview.

May Institute (clinical track) sent out interview requests today. dates are 10, 12, and 18 January.

does anyone know if a site is allowed to ask the following question: "Where else have you applied and what attracted you to these places?" I know when we applied to grad school, that's not an uncommon question, but how does it work with internship? I was looking through some sample interview q's and this one came up. thanks!

I got an interview email today (personalized with my name) from Connecticut Valley Psychology Internship at River Valley Services... :soexcited: wooohooo!! Interview dates are 1/10, 1/12 and 1/14. They said they are interviewing 22 people.

Also got a rejection email from Southlake MHC. oh well...I think I'm at 4 interviews 7 rejections so far.

just got an email from Kansas State counseling center. They only do phone interviews, and then have an open house on Jan 7th. (only 2.5 hours worth of open house).

yay for finally getting word from somewhere. the last place I heard from was early last week.

Got an invite to UVA CC! That's 3 interviews in the state of Virginia. Not some place I ever thought I'd be living...

No. They are absolutely NOT supposed to ask you this. Doesn't mean they won't though.

I only had one interviewer ask me and I decided to evade the question by just saying that I mainly applied to university-affiliated medical centers (he was at an affiliated-VA). I then digressed to how exciting it is that psychology is moving into primary medical settings. He didn't push for more info after he saw I wasn't going to take the bait.

Congrats!! I'll be doing a phone interview there as well. I can't make the open house, as I have an on-site interview that day. Ah well.

3 for 3 so far with 14 sites to go. If I can get 7-8 interviews total, I will be ecstatic!

Robert J Murney Clinic at Forest Institute in Missouri is a no. Generic email sent out this am.

I've already been asked this over the phone when scheduling an interview!

Good morning, everyone! I was wondering if anyone has been invited for an interview at the University of Chicago? I think someone posted a while back that they'd been invited, but I don't see U of C listed on the big list. Thanks!

A friend got an interview invite to University of Chicago today!

What other sites in Virginia have you heard from? I applied to a few sites there too. Thanks!

Email rejection from Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services in NY
3/9, 11 to go

I'm still waiting to hear from UChicago, do you know what tracks got invites?

Just received a rejection from Springfield Hospital in Maryland. I think it could have been a mass email. That's 2 rejections and no interviews. 14 more to go and a few of those have offered some interviews to others. This is killing me.

W8ing - did the rejection seem like a mass email?

Has anyone gotten an invite for boston children's?

It was a mass rejection email...so it looks like you are still in the running! 🙂

In brighter news, I received an interview offer (via email) for Franciscan Hospital. Dates offered are 1/14 and 1/20.

Sharp just sent a personalized email invite with 4 dates in January (1/6, 1/7, 1/10, 1/11)! Wooohoooo! I am going to travel to san diego and go to sea world!

Got an interview for Northport VA. 1/4, 1/11/ and 1/18. w00t!

Congratulations Janey!! Ahhh, I want to hear from them...

I got an interview with Yale School of Med! I applied to the neuropsych track, and the email seemed personalized.

Wonderful, wonderful news bright & early on a Sunday morning 🙂 This is my first interview after 2 rejections (and a few assumed rejections), and I think I may have given my partner a heart attack when I shot out of bed after seeing the email.

Congrats Cervello! I applied to Yale's BMED track, am curious if you (or anyone) has heard if interviews/rejections have been sent out for BMED? It would be such a luxury if all tracks sent out notifications at the same time!! Thanks for any info anyone has. Good luck to all!!

What do you guys think about scheduling two interviews that are on consecutive days in two different cities that are exactly 100 miles apart (2-2.5 hours of driving distance). Both are from 8am-2pm or so. Do you think this is overkill? Should I request another date, although i can't really do the other dates offered.

I applied and haven't heard anything yet either.

University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center sent out invitations to one of my friends ths morning. Go ahead and add that one to the list. I think it was Clinical Child Track

I think it depends on the kind of driving it is. If the traffic isn't too bad and it's not in the mountains and you can actually make it there in 2-2.5 hours, then you should be fine. I drive 3-4 hours all the time to visit my family. Personally, if it's easier to take the date that's close to the one interview, but you have to drive a few hours, I would do it.
