2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
woo hoo! Just heard from Phoenix VA via email for interview. They have 5 dates in the first 2 wks in Jan. Here I come warmer cities!!!

they have an APA accredited adult program???? I wish I knew. I love New Mexico, and rent is really decent there!!! I applied to the Southwest Consortium, which I thought was the only accredited adult program in NM. Bummer that I missed out!

That is the only one; sorry if my comment was confusing. i applied to the consortium as well. Good luck!

Has anyone heard from The Watson Institute, either positively or negativelY/

I applied there and haven't heard anything :xf: Good luck! :luck: Let me know if you hear from them (either way) and I will do the same!

Hey ClinPsyD:

good luck in terms of sharp! Btw, I have a friend who interviewed at the Denver VA and said really positive things about the program last year so congrats on getting an interview there. Denver is beautiful as well.

I also heard from VA in Atlanta via a very nice email from TD w/ dates on 1/7, 1/10, and 1/19. They got 134 applications and are interviewing 18 people for 3 slots. Geez that's tough. Good luck everyone!

I found that my interviews at sites with those kind of numbers (<20 invites) were much more productive because the interviewers really knew my application. It isn't "rocket surgery" 😉 to come to that conclusion, but it is worth noting.

As for the ratio of applicants:invites:ranking....each site knows about what they need. It isn't a perfect science, but generally each site has a number going into the application review process. Some sites have the luxury of being able to interview 10-15 people for 2 spots, but most sites need a more generous ratio.

The ratios can vary quite a bit, particularly for high-# sites and/or regions. A place like the Boston Consortium (or whatever it is called now) can get 500+ applications, though because they have 8-10 slots to fill, they may interview 75-100+ people. Many of the sites in NYC will interview more people than most because they are often fighting over more common applicants. They also will encounter more people who apply because of the location and not necessarily the fit. Conversely, there are sites that get people to self-select out (federal prisons, armed services, rural mental health, etc).

There is also the issue of ranking. While I cannot speak to how deep a site's list goes, I've been told some places rarely get post their 3rd or 4th person, while others go well into their list. Just like the applicants, a site strongly prefers to not go into the clearing house because they know far less about those applicants, so most sites rank most people they interview.

Sharp just sent a personalized email invite with 4 dates in January (1/6, 1/7, 1/10, 1/11)! Wooohoooo! I am going to travel to san diego and go to sea world!

If you have time, you really should check out the SD Zoo...it is awesome!

Got back to back interviews set up kinda how you described, although my sites are in Long Island NY and Boston (about 4 hours apart). I am going to take a train or bus in the evening between cities. I like it because it cuts down on costs of flying and what not, personally.

What do you guys think about scheduling two interviews that are on consecutive days in two different cities that are exactly 100 miles apart (2-2.5 hours of driving distance). Both are from 8am-2pm or so. Do you think this is overkill? Should I request another date, although i can't really do the other dates offered.

Received a rejection today for Children's Hospital Boston (so I guess they are running rolling rejections, or perhaps just forgot to send my rejection email over the weekend), but got interview invites to Franciscan Children's in Boston & Univ. New Mexico Health Science Center!!!

It was a mass rejection email...so it looks like you are still in the running! 🙂

In brighter news, I received an interview offer (via email) for Franciscan Hospital. Dates offered are 1/14 and 1/20.

I've heard absolutely nothing today, which I guess isn't necessarily a bad thing. Though, I was looking forward to hearing some good news today! Congratulations to everyone who did!

Interview at Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services in NY - mass email

I recommend megabus. They have the lowest prices for trips b/w NYC and Boston (as low as 9). Chinatown Boston buses can be scary....

Ack! This process is driving me crazy. I know that checking my e-mail every 3 seconds is not good for my anxiety or my productivity, but on the other hand, those interview dates go fast, so I feel like I need to keep checking to avoid scheduling conflicts.

This is going to be a loooooooooong 10 days.

I remember the Chinatown buses quite well 🙂 Couldn't beat the $10 price or the thrill one experienced that went along with making it safely from city to city. Fung Wah was the company to go with for cheapest price when I lived in the city - Is Fung Wah still the way to go for best prices? How much are tickets going for nowadays??? Thanks!

I know what you mean 🙁 I got an interview from a "reach" site on Friday but I already have an interview on the day they scheduled me for, so I e-mailed back asking if I could move to a different specific interview day (they said in the e-mail that if the date didn't work for me, they may be able to move me to interview dates X, Y, and Z - X and Y work). However, it was towards the end of the business day on Friday so I thought I'd hear from them today. Nothing 🙁 Here's to hoping they respond tomorrow saying X is fine! :xf: The conflicting interview is also a "reach" and can't be rescheduled as the alternative date conflicts with yet another interview. It's a nice but frustrating problem to have!

Ugh Fung Wah is so sketchy. I checked yesterday and they were $15. Megabus was $13 and some of them are double deckers!

Congrats! 🙂

Did you, or anyone who received an interview from the Phoenix VA, apply to the neuropsych track?

Congrats Cervello! I applied to Yale's BMED track, am curious if you (or anyone) has heard if interviews/rejections have been sent out for BMED? It would be such a luxury if all tracks sent out notifications at the same time!! Thanks for any info anyone has. Good luck to all!!

Thanks! And, I don't think so. The invites from Yale definitely seem track-specific; the person who e-mailed me my invite was the director of the neuropsych track. Good luck! 🙂

I applied to the beh med track. Maybe they'll send out neuropsych ones tomorrow??

Putting out an APB for the following sites...anyone know if any of these places have started sending out invites (or know when invites might be sent out)?

Marcus Autism Center
Family Service & Guidance Center (Topeka,KS)
UNC - Chapel Hill (TEACCH and CIDD tracks)
Northeast Oklahoma Psych. (Tulsa Center for Child Psych track - I know the forensic track has already sent out invites)
Univ of Tennessee (in Memphis - St Jude's track)
The May Institute
The Watson Institute

Marcus has sent some acceptances and some rejections, but lots of people have not heard one way of the other. The May sent out acceptances and rejections today (which you have probably already heard). Univ of TN (St Jude's) is still pending as far as I have heard. Good luck!

Being from Long Island and having gone to school in Boston, be prepared for the commute to take MUCH longer then you expect. Just a word of unsolicited advice. Good luck on your interviews.

Thanks for the heads up!!! I guess I'm in the middle of the pack for Marcus. Got an interview at UNC, rejection from May, and no word from anyone else on the list. :xf::xf::xf:

does anyone know if a site is allowed to ask the following question: "Where else have you applied and what attracted you to these places?" I know when we applied to grad school, that's not an uncommon question, but how does it work with internship? I was looking through some sample interview q's and this one came up. thanks!

As per my training director that question is off limits. HTH.

I hate feeling like trying to become a clinical psychologist may be compromising my sanity.

Anyone else still waiting to hear from May?

Good luck. I'm still waiting on Marcus myself. They apparently send out rejections via snail mail.

Ugh...I wish I lived in ATL so I would know right away 😛 Are interview offers still going out via phone and e-mail? (I think that's what they said on their APPIC website)

I know one person who got an interview. It was the last week of November by telephone. Training director said she still had several people left to call. I wish they would reject me already.

If she had just several people to call as of roughly two weeks ago, I'm guessing I'm in the reject pile too 🙁 Good luck to you TjMc! Let me know if/when you hear from them (either positive or negative news) and I'll do the same. Snail mail takes about 3 days to get here from ATL so I'm guessing I'll know relatively soon *if* decisions had been made around Thanksgiving and letters are already starting to go out.

4 rejections, 1 "our computer system melted down so we dont know yet", and 12 more to go (including site with melted down system)... C'mooonnn TUESDAY! I could really use some good news! :corny: Practicum is gonna be BRUTAL as I wait today...

Good luck to all this week!

Good morning everyone!! Crossing my fingers for good news for everyone today!

Just got a generic email rejection to James Haley VA in Tampa. Best of luck to the rest of you who applied!

Got an email invite from U of Rochester's counseling center. So far, two interviews, one rejection...and waiting to hear from 10 more places!

Congrats! 2-1 is not a bad ratio. I'm currently working on a 3-2 and waiting to hear back from 20. Good luck with the last 10!!

I haven't heard from anywhere since last Wednesday, so I'm dying to get some news (hopefully good, of course!) Good luck to all!

Hey everyone...been lurking for awhile, figured i'd finally post.

So far I've gotten invites from Institute for Child and Family Health, Florida International University, Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, and Community Services Institute...rejections from Suffolk and Beth Israel. waiting to hear back from 16 more!

Has anyone received an interview invite from Children's Hospital Boston?? I'm debating whether or not its appropriate to email to ask. On one hand, the brochure for the site says the following:
@font-face { font-family: "Arial"; }p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; } "Applicants should e-mail Ms. Berne during the week of December 6 to see if they are invited for an interview, and if so, to make arrangements for an appointment."

On the other hand, they sent an email saying this:
"I am writing to let you know that your application is in our cue. I also wanted to let you know that ideally we will be notifying applicants the week of December 6 if they have been invited for an interview."

What are peoples thoughts? Is it appropriate to email? Or should I wait, since i still haven't heard anything, but am getting the sense that they are doing "rolling rejections" UGH!

this feels like either a really slow morning for notifications, or else most of our board is at practicum/work and unable to check or update us. its a double edged sword that I'm at work but sitting in front of a computer all day with more than enough time to be obsessively checking email and the board every few minutes.

I'd always give precedence to emailed material vs. material on the website or in the brochure; thus, I wouldn't contact them just yet. Personally, as difficult as it would be, I'd wait until probably Thursday to send an inquiry.
