2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is anyone going to the open house next week? I ultimately decided I couldn't justify spending hundreds of dollars to travel for an optional 4-hour seminar.

Also, did anyone request to talk with a current intern there? I did on the 15th, and I still haven't heard anything from an intern. Feeling a little disillusioned about the site now...

I had forgotten to request that when I RSVPed but I emailed them just now and they got back to me right away and forwarded my request to the "head intern" who also got back to me right away and asked what rotations I was interested in so he could set me up with the right people. So worth trying again, maybe they missed that part when they processed your RSVP.

I actually did here back from them. They told me they wanted to telephone interview me. TD has been out of town so it was the department secretary (or something similar) that responded to my request. I do not know if this means that I am ranking (thus far) behind the people who they granted the "in-persons" to? Not sure, but that seems like it would be biased more by a first come first serve kinda thing? Idk. Love the site, but their interview system sure is confusing.

That does indeed sound like it could be a first-come, first-served situation; perhaps all of their available interview spots filled up, and so they're offering telephone interviews to all applicants that they've only recently notified or hadn't heard back from regarding scheduling.

On a completely unrelated note--despite having written down my interview dates/times on multiple calendars and planners, I'm still having sporadic moments of panic during which I fear I've gotten sites' dates mixed up, causing me to go back through and quadruple-check all of my interview confirmations. I keep feeling like I'm going to end up flying into North Carolina when the interview was actually in Houston, or something similar.

And where's the evidence that a "prestigious" internship makes you more successful in your career? Or for that matter, that you'll be any happier? 😕

Ha! Right?? There are some well known sites that I didn't apply to, not because I didn't think I had a good chance but because I didn't want them! lol

Mind telling me when you heard? Their brochure says past interns have been selected based on phone interviews, so it sounds like they try not to weigh your presence (or lack of presence) at the open house heavily.

I don't know whether to play up the fact that I'm not really into forensic psychology per se and focus on my match with their b-med stuff.....or whether to play it like although I don't have that experience, I am very interested gaining that experience. I guess I think that if I did the former (which is probably closer to the actual truth), they might think I wasnt a good enough fit. IDK.

Personally, I would go with the latter. I mean, I'd be honest and focus on the bmed, but def express interest in gaining experience in the forensic stuff. It is a competition after all! 🙂

Good luck!!:luck:

Omg. Bet you are LOVING being able to cross interviews off as they pass! You get no sympathy from me, though. This is like in 8th grade when the girl w/ the big boobs complains to the girl w/ small boobs that her boobs are too big. Cry me a river +pity+ 😉

There is no such thing as boobs that are too big...

the week before Christmas, but cant remember specifically.

Haha halfway through writing that part of my reply, I realized that I was possibly coming across as a pretentious jerk indirectly bragging about invites. Definitely not the case at all, as there are many individuals on this board who've reported getting quite a few more interviews than me; but I went through with the posting to share my own version of freaking out.

However, your analogy is epic, and I shall now attempt to remember it for use at some future point in my life (with proper citations, of course).

has anyone had to interpret assessment profiles on interviews? I really don't feel like re-memorizing the MMPI

I've had three interviews so far and haven't been asked to interpret or comment on test data on any of them. However, they weren't particularly assessment-intensive internships.

I had one interview last year that asked me to interpret MMPI and Rorschach data -- mind you, this was one site out of 11 I interviewed at, so the likelihood is small. But it does happen...

I'm wondering the same. I am interviewing at assessment-heavy sites (all NP tracks at med schools and VAs), and I've heard even under these conditions it is rare.

Another thing bouncing around my mind is this...given that my interviews are exclusively at NP tracks (some with seemingly little tx focus) how likely is it that I will be asked lots of therapy questions or asked to present a therapy case? I'm expecting to present NP case(s) and wouldn't be surprised if I had to present a therapy case as well, but I'm just not sure. Advice from those who have interviewed at such sites would be much appreciated!!

How about specific points of emphasis in case presentations (tx or assessment)?

Thanks in advance everyone!

I remember hearing about at least two places that tossed out a scoring summary from a Rorschach and asked for an interpretation...I think they were both in NYC and at psychodynamic friendly/heavy hospitals. I wouldn't worry too much.

If you are looking primarily at NP sites, expect case vignettes, questions about test selection, and inquiries about what kind of research you are interested in. It shouldn't be an inquisition, but don't be surprised if a site gives you a vague background of a case and ask what you would do to evaluate the person. There most likely isn't a "right" answer, but they want to see how you approach a case. I found those questions pretty fun actually.

Is anyone going to the Portland VA open house next week????

Happy New Year everyone!!!! Best of luck to everyone with interviews in Jan 🙂

Hi there! I've been reading the forum for couple of months, and I've really appreciated the positive atmosphere. I have received a handful of interviews, and, of all the sites, there is one that falls substantially lower on my list than the others. I am in a position where, by sheer number of interviews, it would be wise to rank all of the sites to to maximize my chances of matching. However, I feel really ambivalent about this one site so I am considering not ranking it at all. I am aware of the potential consequences of ranking a limited number of sites, but the debate I am having with myself is this: Is it better to "risk" ending up at a site that may not be the best (limited research opportunities, a required rotation that was not described as such in the site's materials that I would have a hard time with, and ) just so I can get my degree? Generally speaking, does anyone have a sense of how important where one interns is for post-graduate career plans? Thanks and good luck to everyone!

That is always a consideration, though the reality of internship now is that most people seem to be okay with getting an APA-acred site in their general area. It gets a little dicier if you are ranking APA v. APPIC v. etc. but that should probably be a discussion the applicant should have with their mentor(s) and program office.

As for the importance of where you intern....I don't think it is that big of a deal, but I'm just N=1. It'd be helpful to gain more experience in your area of interest, but most post-docs understand the realities of internship. The one caveat I'll make is you'll need some kind of experience during your training to apply to post-doc sites with a more specific focus. For example, I've seen a number of counseling sites take students from non-counseling internship sites, but they all had prior counseling site experience, they just didn't land a counseling site internship.

I have my first interview in a few days and wanted to know if there is way to "play up," if you will, the fact that they are in my hometown and that my wife and I really, really, really want to come back and settle there. I am indeed a good match there and its a great site, but wanted to give them something more if i could, and I feel this may be it. Does that make sense? I know we are not allowed to tell sites that they are our "number 1 pick," but was wondering if there are ways to express or "play up" this element?

Considering that 3 of my 6 interviews are in my home state (2 in my hometown) I wonder if there is indeed a tendency to want to bring back applicants to their home state?

It can speak to fit. I let a couple of sites know that I had ties to the town/city, and that seemed to work well and still be well within the rules of the Match.

Did you actually go on this interview yet? People often find that they like a site a lot more than they initially thought after visiting (or a lot less). So at least wait until you go on the interview before deciding about ranking. I would say that if it's a decent APA accredited site, even if it's not the best fit for you, that it would be better than waiting another year and going through this horrible process again. You just have to decide would it be better to go there or to not match and do it again (or go some other route)?

I would absolutely bring this up. Find some way to say "I'm actually from xyz and my wife and I would love to move back to the area" or something along those lines. From what I've heard, sites tend to eat that type of thing up. I had little luck with southern, rural sites, and I can't help but wonder if that is because I've always lived/studied in major metropolitan areas. I almost want to write to WVU and say "I really, really, really DO want to live in WV!!" lol

I completely agree with JeNeSaisQuoi. Going through this process for the second time, I would take a terrible APA site (even if it meant suffering for a year) rather than go through this process again. A bird in the hand, right?

Good luck on coming interview everyone! I have one in upstate NY this week and in MA the week after. :xf::xf:

WVU is high on my list as well since Charleston is only 4 hours from my hometown and is much like my hometown in many ways (size, location, etc). I assume you're still gonna rank them even though they haven't called you back?

I think its pretty clear that they already recognize that I'm from there since my undergrad (listed on my CV) is there and I mention it in essay 3. I am just trying to find a way to tell them that basically they are my number one without actually saying it. I do want them to understand how important it is to us to move back there because I think that was at least somewhat of a draw (or at least a unique feature) of my application. I have 2 chances (ie., 2 sites) to play up this hometown thing, so Im going to do my best.

Tomorrow, interviewing season begins full-force for me. I'll be in 12 states in the next 16 days. It's a little daunting, but also exciting. I hope I'm ready for this whirlwind.

Good luck to all of you interviewing!

Anyone have advice on how to make the most of an open house?

I know they say that the Open house is primarily for the benefit of the applicant, this is a VA in which they do no formal interviews. I am pretty sure that staff may be influenced if they form a positive or negative reaction to a particular candidate during the interview.

What kind of approach or strategy to the open house do people recommend (Detroit VA)?

Avoid mentioning all the terrible things about Detroit and you should be fine..haha.

I concur that I have always found open houses to be strange because staff do indeed interact with applicants extensively and I dont see how it wouldn't/couldn't influence their view of people one way or the other. Especially when one has the opp to (even if very subtly and very briefly) show their match with the site, strike up a memorable conversation, name drop, etc.

Well yes, but perhaps take that one step further and mention why you would be interesting in working in the city (although hopefully you articulated some of these things in your cover letter). But mostly, I would suggest 1) Avoid making a complete fool of yourself 2) Talk to the current interns 3) Ask a few good questions.

But I do agree, open houses are a bit of an awkward situation.

Separate interview related question: if you have an interview coming up in 3-4 days, but you never heard word about who you might be interviewing with, is it appropriate to send an email and ask?? Or should you just wait to find out the day of the interview and prepare for all possibilities?

Not all sites send out an advanced notice. Some are actually randomly assigned, like my current site. So I wouldn't email them.

OAN, I want wish you all good luck. Have fun, peeps! :luck:

No, I would not. As an applicant, sites rarely told me in advance with whom I'd be interviewing. Now, from the perspective of an interviewer, I think it may come across as pushy. Plus, interviewer assignments change all the time.

Almost 25% of applicants do not match at all. Would you rather potentially not match and have to wait an entire extra year (if you don't find something that is "the best" through the clearinghouse) to apply again? I would rank all sites, with the least preferred at the bottom, unless you would rather not match at all than intern at the site in question.

Good to know! Thanks for the feedback, looks like I will be playing the wait and see game 🙂

In my experience I have had great success making a positive impression by going completely pantsless. You might wonder why I would go pantsless. It may seem like a risk, but if you combine your unclothed nether regions with witty banter and flirtatious gazes there is nothing beyond your reach. Forget the naysayers and stress. Let yourself feel the freeing breeze of success. Enjoy!

As a student from a non-accredited counseling program I find it odd that I have 17 out of 23 interviews and other people who think themselves complete geniuses of APA approved programs have none. GAME ON!:soexcited::highfive:

If anyone is interested in sharing hotels, transportation, etc. to cut down on expenses, I will be these places on the following dates. Send me a private message if interested:

night of 1/3-1/5 San Fran
night of 1/6 Los Angeles

night of 1/9 Minneapolis
night of 1/10-1/13 Madison, WI

night of 1/17 Rochester
night of 1/18 Pittsburgh

Please send head shots!👍

I am a "complete genius of an APA approved program" (although I have a handful of interviews). I am unsure on why would I want to go on 17 interviews? This stikes my as cost prohibitive and needlessly stressful and taxing. This is my "genious" speaking...

I think that Pdiddydinkins, needs to be banned. It appears to me that he/she has decided to be a troll with a brand new account. All of his/her posts are mean-spirited and insulting. People on this list are understandably stressed about the process whether they have a lot of interviews of or a few, and he/she is trying to make it worse.

Noooooooooooooooooo! 48 hours before my first interview and I'm getting a massive cold!!! :scared:

Anyone have any particular medicine they find to be helpful for colds?? (sore throat, stuffy nose, cold feels like it's behind my nose/eyes/forhead) Didn't sleep well at all last night 👎 Pretty sure I'm gonna max out on the amount of cold medicine I can legally get in one day 😛 Anyway...if you have any tips on good medicine (or at least something that would help me feel functional), I'm all ears!!! Probably going to get some AM stuff (to help keep me relatively alert) and some PM stuff (for sleep).
While this advice is a little late for you, it will help others. go see a pharmacist and get their advice on what combination of drugs to take at what times. I did this for my fiance, (now wife) when she had a massive cold come on the day before she was supposed to be a brides maid. no-one could tell that she had a cold during the ceremony and reception.

Stressed or not...i'm afraid PDiddy has a point.

Thanks for the heads up! 🙂 For others in a similar boat, I found the Zicam nasal spray (over-the-counter) to be VERY helpful for a runny nose. Within one hour of taking it, I was 100% sniffle-free! Without it....it wasn't pretty :d

QUESTION - for those who send thank you notes post-interview...to whom do you send thank yous? Every interviewer? Just the TD? At one site, I had 5 interviews (four were one-on-one, including one with the TD, and one was two interviewers together asking me questions). Sending 5 thank yous seems a bit much, but then sending a thank you to just one of 5 interviewers does not seem quite right either. Thoughts??

PS - I thought there would be a break in going into a panic checking my e-mail, but now I'm getting e-mails from places that offered me interviews (giving me the schedule for interview day, directions, etc - some are using only e-mail to keep things "green") and every time I see an e-mail from a site I got an interview from, I panic thinking that they made a mistake and are taking back the interview offer 😛 As someone mentioned above, I too am worried that I overlooked something, wrote down a wrong interview date, etc 🙂 It is a wonderful problem to have...I've just never checked my calendar (and verified the dates with the original interview offer) so many times in my life! 😛

I thought I heard something bad about Zicam a year or 2 ago..like a warning or maybe even a recall or something?

Thank you notes are tricky, as most in my progam have told us not to bother, and if you do, to just send a thank you email. Personally, I feel that THEY should be sending US thank you cards for the enormous out-of-pocket travel cost we were willing to incur in order to potentially serve as $12.00 labor at their training facility...🙄

Ya know...my mom said the exact same thing (long after I took it 🙄). I don't know if they changed it or if it was a different version of Zicam (there are a few different sprays, some pill versions, etc), but I bought it at a national chain grocery/pharmacy store in December 2010 so I would suspect that it passed muster (checked the expiration date too to make sure it wasn't just an old box). I know there are pretty strict limits on how often you can take it (which was clearly spelled out in the directions on the box) - it's not something you can take several times a day or anything, but I found that one dose was more than enough to get me through a regular business day. Didn't experience any apparent side effects/nose bleeds/etc. Worked like a charm 🙂

I did go on the interview because I wanted to get a sense of what the site was like beyond what I read on its website. After going, it still is not the best fit, but I'd certainly be able to get decent training there. Regarding fit, I think the site may not see me as the best fit and, like several sites I've read about in the Match News, they are taking fewer interns next year. However, it can't hurt to rank it.

Yikes!!! There was an increase of 343 match applicants this application season, without nearly as great of an increase in APPIC sites.

Not so great for the anxiety levels.

cool. Please comment on that thread about my post if you have thoughts/insights.

Hey everyone, do you guys know if it acceptable to cancel interviews due to emergency circumstances? Will this in any way affect the match process with the other sites?

If so, what is more appropriate-phone or email?

thanx

I have no factual knowledge on this topic, so this is just MHO. If it's an emergency, it's an emergency. If you're lucky, they might agree to re-schedule or interview you by phone. I don't see why or how your canceling an interview with some sites should affect your chances of being ranked at other sites.

If you're canceling at the last minute, I would both call and email. Otherwise, if you'd really like to remain under consideration at a site, I would probably call, as it's easier to convey sincere regret on the phone than over email, IMHO.

I agree with pretty much everything said above. If the situation is truly an emergency, then it's something you need to deal with, interview or no. Cancellations can and do happen for these sorts of things; I can see how it may affect your chances at that particular site if they aren't able to reschedule or offer a phone interview, but I don't see how or why it should at all impact your chances at any other site.

And yes, definitely call, and then possibly send a follow-up email.
