2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just to put some feelers out there, has anyone heard from any of these sites (offer or rejection)?

Clifford Beers
U Washington
Inst. for Child and Fam Health (Miami)
Miami-Dade DHS
Community Services Institute
Rogers Memorial Hospital
Rappahannock
Harvard
St James Hospital
Wasatch Mental Health
Allendale
Duke
Manatee Glens

OR any rejections from the following? (I know at least some interview offers have gone out for both of these)
Ohio Psych
IWK (Canada)

Offers from Rogers and Wasatch. I asked to be taken out of the running for Rogers though, because they insisted on an in-person interview (and I live on the other side of the country).

Sorry about the lack of clarity in my response.......I personally will NOT be contacting any sites. With that said, you gotta do what is best for you 🙂

Just to clarify, are you saying you would or would not want to contact sites? Not quite sure what you meant when you said "risk any last minute offers"...

I have not heard from U Wash or Harvard, and no rejections from Ohio Psych (though remember they don't have to give rejections).

Anyone hear from Bowling Green or SUNY-Buffalo?

If you don't mind my asking, when/how did you hear from Rogers and Wasatch? Congrats on the interviews! (though that stinks that Rogers requires an in-person interview this round 👎)

Hey everyone:

Sort of went AWOL after not matching in phase I. Anyways, I'm over it and ready to move on

Got interviews upcoming (so far, hopefully more coming) from: Children's Hospital Oakland, Andrus Children's Center (Andrus said they were sending out emails later this week), Burea Children's and Wisconsin Consortium site.

Rejections from: Devereux Institute

Apparently, sites were innundated with applications for phase 2. 2 of the sites I will be interviewing at as well as a friend on internship at one site stated in the email or told me over the phone they many more applicants than they had from phase 1. Those are all from medium sized/solid, but not prestigious, APA sites. I can only imagine what sites like U Washington or Harvard got!

Good luck to everyone in phase 2 🙂

Berea being on the list made me realize that a lot of internship sites especially new ones like Berea were lulled into a false confidence. My wife interviewed at Berea last year, which was their first year as an APA-accredited internship site. The interns were not happy and were telling the applicants so. This year, I think they got a growth in the number of good applicants putting them as a safety internship lower on their lists And Berea may have not ranked or even interviewed some good applicants leading to them having all four slots in phase II. I think the shortage of internships is causing applicants to apply for more sites. This might mean that less competitive sites need to up the number of applicants they interview and rank, if they want to avoid phase II.

That said my wife said it could be a good internship, but you need to be prepared to work long hours and do a lot of driving to do home visits. She also indicated that you need to be willing to advocate for yourself to make sure you get good supervision, as the center has a high workload on the supervisors as well.

Good luck!

I heard from both of them on Tuesday via phone. I also got a rejection from Marcus today, which I completely expected.

I've been checking in to see how y'all are faring in phase II. I'm glad that interviews have been coming in, and I hope more good news is on its way.

Does anyone else think (hope?) that today will be a big contact day? I can't imagine many sites waiting until next week to notify people regarding interviews, but I know that many places were slammed w/applications. Good luck today everyone! Getting ready for my first two phone interviews this afternoon!

I only had 1-3 days notice for the two interviews I got; hearing back today or monday is reasonable I think.

Just got an interview...sort of...from Manatee Glens via mass email. They are looking at 55 people out of 90. Very very brief phone calls to come plus a Facebook discussion page. Interesting.... 😕

What this about a Facebook discussion page? For the site? Huh?

Yeah, the site is going to set up a facebook discussion page for the 55 of us left so we can 'talk' with interns, get our questions answered, etc. Then all 55 people (or whomever is left if anyone removes themselves from consideration) will get a 5-10 minute phone call next week.

Hey! I got the same email... definitely a first. I'm curious to see what that will be like. Hmm... Hoping more interview offers come in today for us all :xf:

in fact, nothing. almost think I did something wrong when applying for phase 2. that barista job at starbucks is looking better and better.

Did it sound to you like the phone calls will be quite impromptu (ie: they won't say when they will be calling each of us)? Guess I'll be glued to my phone even moreso now!

Makes me a little worried b/c one of my practicum sites is out of cell phone range... We aren't supposed to reply to the e-mail, but if they call on a certain day, I can't answer unless I cancel practicum or if they just happen to call on a different day or time. 😕

Hello everyone, I have been watching the forum over the last couple weeks and finally decided to join. First and foremost, my condolences to everyone going through this terrible situation. I am in the same boat and it has been one of the most stressful periods of my graduate career. It has been extremely validating to read the reactions and thoughts of those of you experiencing the same feelings of anxiety, doubt, worry, and anger. Just to give you guys an update on my personal application status in case it helps:

Interview invites:
Baylor
Berea
Marcus

Rejections:
Andrus
Devereaux
Wasatch
UC, Davis
U Rochester

Yes, it did sound like it could be a bit more impromptu b/c they didn't mention setting up a time to talk. I am guessing that if they call and we are unable to answer, they will leave a message or try again. No site can expect that we will be able to answer when they call without having setting up a time to talk. I am sure they understand that we all have other obligations and are not always able to answer the phone. Maybe this will be addressed on the FB group page 😉

Ha! Well I'm sure the interns will be very forthcoming on a Facebook discussion board their supervisors can read.

Yes I agree - Lawrence, KS is totally awesome. I am a Kansan and did undergrad at KU, loved the psych dept, and loved people in general. I'd LOVE to have matched there, but didn't apply because I didn't want college counseling. But if there was a VA there I'd be all over it (and I know I'll be applying to the KC VA for post-doc)!!!

You should have applied to the Topeka VA (part of the Eastern Kansas Healthcare System)! They have a great training program, which was heavily influenced by their affiliation with Menninger. They have great assessment training, though they require more projective assessment training than most other VAs.

I'm not sure of your background/interests, but if you are considering the KC VA for a post-doc, then I'd also recommend checking out the KU Medical Center. I'm not sure what post-docs they offer now, but they have a strong reputation.

Yes, I agree and am feeling the same way about the timing of the interview offers. Good luck with your interviews today!

Has anyone out there heard from any of the following (either interview offers or rejections):

Humboldt Unified School District
Synchrony of Visalia
Clifford Beers
Park Place Behavioral Health
Institute for Child & Family Health
Pennsylvania Counseling Services
SUNY Buffalo
IMCES
Miami Dade DHS
U of CA, Riverside
U of the Pacific
Metro State
Georgia Southern
Bowling Green

Thanks!

They just have a post-doc in general clinical and they are not taking apps for this coming year.

I am also waiting to hear from synchrony of visalia, institute for child and family health, and miami-dade. I'm joining the phase II convos kind of late, has anyone mentioned the Ohio Psychology Internship or (long shots...) Baylor and Harvard? I see that someone mentioned Primary Children's Medical Center in SLC today, has anyone else heard from them? Also, someone above mentioned Community Services Institute and Allendale. CSI told me they are only interviewing 12 for 6 remaining positions so you would have heard from them already if you are one of them. I have an interview scheduled with Allendale, they called me on Wednesday to set it up. Oh and two of my classmates have interviews with Georgia Southern. They heard from them early in the week.

Someone mentioned several days ago (maybe even a week?) that they got an interview with Ohio Psych. I haven't heard from them but they don't have to send rejections so I'm guessing I'm out, but who knows 😳 Baylor has sent out interview offers. I do not know if they are done sending out offers or not. I also applied to Harvard (though it's a long shot for me too) and haven't heard anything, though I don't think anyone else on here has heard from them either. Also haven't heard from Miami Dade, Institutue for Child and Family Health. Interviewed with Primary Childrens.

Thanks for the info! Yes, I had an interview with Ohio Psychology Internship.

Yeah, got that one too......seems, different --- If we "like" links, updates, etc. throughout the soon to be created FB page, do we get extra consideration for the site???

Hi everyone,

I've only posted once before but I'm another person going through the turmoil of Phase II. As I'm sure it has been for all of us, this has been one of the most stressful and upsetting experiences I've been through. I thought that Phase I went really well -- I received 8 interview offers from top sites, felt I was a great fit for most, and thought the interviews went really well. Match day was demoralizing, to say the least. Not to mention that it has been years since someone from my program hasn't matched. The two silver linings to this situation have been the fantastic support I've received from faculty in my program, and the few outstanding child-related internship spots that are still miraculously available. I just wanted to to weight in to say that I've appreciated hearing the thoughts of everyone on the site who is going through the same thing. It's not over yet -- let's all try to have a tiny bit of faith in the system to work for us in this second round. I know it's risky to have any hope, but we will need it to put our best foot forward with the Round 2 sites!

I've received interviews from Baylor, Duke, and Marcus. Rejections from Andrus and Devereux. I'm still waiting on Harvard, UCSF, and ICFH. Hang in there everyone!

It's nice to hear from those of you who silently watch from a far and are coming out of the woodwork 🙂 I too, did that during phase I, especially close to match day. Once I started posting, it was incredible the support and validation I received. Congrats on the interviews you've received and good luck, hopefully there is more good news to come! 👍

Hi Rindy! Congrats on all the great interviews! 👍 If you don't mind my asking, when/how did you hear from Duke? I believe there are quite a few of us that applied there but I think most of us (myself included) haven't heard from them, granted I know they are a long shot for me. I can still hope they haven't finished contacting people yet 😛

Hi there!

I heard from Duke yesterday afternoon -- personalized email. Hope for more good news for everyone soon!

Oooooh...maybe there is still hope! There are a few sites that have contacted people on different days... :xf:

Random note - has anyone heard from Allendale? They have six spots open and are APA, I thought they would have started contacting people by now. Maybe they were really slammed with applications given how many spots they have? (though that understandably may have scared people off too)

Just dropping in to see how things are progressing. Good to see that interviews are rolling in for folks in Phase II. 👍 (The Facebook thing is bizarre though...)

G'luck, everyone! :luck:

Day is coming to an end... at least the work day. Surprised with the lack of news! There are still so many sites whose interview status hasn't been mentioned on here.

Hope everyone has a good weekend & I look forward to continued updates 🙂

Hey everyone! Haven't been on here in a while, but thought I would add what I know so far. I've gotten interview offers from SAPIC, Baylor, W.J.B. Dorn VA, and the Boise VA. I also got rejections from UC, Davis and Wasatch. And then I got an invite to "move on to the next round" from UC, San Fran but decided they were not a good match for me.

Still waiting to hear on a ton of sites! Good luck to you all and congrats to everyone who got interviews so far! 😀

I've been reading all the posts on this forum from Feb 25th and am in the same boat, unmatched. I have a few questions/comments (sorry, it's long!)

(1) Heard from U Wash yesterday. Somebody had asked about that, but I didn't recall seeing a response from anybody else.

(2) I'm curious about how many interviews people had who didn't match. I had 9 (which involved driving through 2 snowstorms, getting 2 stomach viruses, spending >15% of my annual income, & of course getting my hopes up).

(3) Anybody hear back from UCSD? Brown (though I am guessing they decided to re-enter Phase II because somebody had a connection and it is a formality)?

(4) People had mentioned emailing TDs at sites where they interviewed and didn't match for feedback so they could improve in the intervening year. Does anybody think emailing a TD would influence your application one way or another the following year if you chose to reapply? I wouldn't want to hurt my chances of going to my top choice next year by asking them what went wrong this year.

Anyway, I'm really appreciative of this forum and those who have posted either with their support or their shared experiences. I'm in my fifth year this year. I applied last year and only got 2 interviews so not matching wasn't a surprise. Not matching 2 years in a row, with 9 interviews, some at very competitive sites, and positive feedback from 2 of my top 3 choices (the competitive sites needless to say), however, is rather soul-crushing. It makes me wonder if I really am just an awful interviewee. I'm on the more shy/quiet side in initial encounters with people so I worked hard at not appearing that way, but perhaps not hard enough.

Yes, I did apply to the Topeka VA, and interviewed there. They looked awesome but in the end I didn't put it at the top. Hard decisions though. For next year I'll be looking at the KC VA for sure!

Just dropping in to check on how eveyone was doing and see your updates on site notifications, etc. Have been thinking a lot about all of my fellow SDNers and hoping/wishing for the best outcome for each of you participating in Phase II. Will keep checking back often. Try to take it day by day and remember to "just keep swimming" (in case you were curious, Finding Nemo was on earlier). 🙂

Hey blindchaos,
I do have an interview with Allendale. They contacted me on Wednesday. My interview is not until Friday afternoon though so I was thinking I got one of the later spots??

Oooooh...maybe there is still hope! There are a few sites that have contacted people on different days... :xf:

Still checking this forum everyday to see how you all are doing and so excited to see interviews are starting to go out. To those still waiting - hang in there. It's not over yet!

Does anybody think emailing a TD would influence your application one way or another the following year if you chose to reapply?

This has come up on the mailing list and the consensus is that it can only help your re-application to know how to strengthen your material. Those TDs that will reply are typically happy to help, and are unlikely to remember you next year given how many people apply these days. So I'd say go for it - feedback is always a good thing.

I strongly doubt you're an awful interviewee. You may have interviewing skills you can work on (as do we all) but no, not awful. This process seems to be part-lottery these days, and while I feel terribly that you didn't match for a second time around, please do recognize that the lottery component probably has as much to do with your results as do skills you can work on. That said, it's still a crushing experience that I wish no one was forced to go through. 🙁

Got a no from London in Canada. Not surprised or disappointed, that one was a longer shot for me.

I just got a rejection from London too. Yup, Saturday afternoon. I was pretty surprised to get it on the weekend. For those who are curious, I got it by email.
