2011 APPIC Internship Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey everyone! Haven't been on here in a while, but thought I would add what I know so far. I've gotten interview offers from SAPIC, Baylor, W.J.B. Dorn VA, and the Boise VA. I also got rejections from UC, Davis and Wasatch. And then I got an invite to "move on to the next round" from UC, San Fran but decided they were not a good match for me.

Still waiting to hear on a ton of sites! Good luck to you all and congrats to everyone who got interviews so far! 😀

I had an interview with the Boise VA as well but I have not heard from any other places I applied so far. Do you mind sharing when you heard from SAPIC, Baylor, and WJB Dorn? I am waiting to hear from those. Did they email or call? Personalized email or mass? Thanks!

Of course! Congrats on the Boise VA interview! I heard from Dorn by the phone and the other two by personalized email. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you! 🙂

I'm new to the forum, but browsed regularly during Phase I and decided to take a look during Phase II. Same as everyone else, I am pretty devastated about not matching after ranking 8 sites and knowing I was ranked by at least half. The imbalance is ridiculous.

I applied to 32 places in Phase II, 16 APA, 16 APPIC.

Anyway, I had an interview with Allendale yesterday. It lasted about 40 minutes and seemed to go okay, but I'm not a big fan of phone interviews. I also have an interview with Oakland Children's on Tuesday.

Rejected from:
Andrus (they are looking for school psychologists)
Berea
Wasatch
Colorado West

I see that others received interviews from Baylor, Primary Children's, Ohio Psychology Internship, Manatee Glens, CSI, Rogers Memorial and KU CAPS, so I'm assuming I am also rejected from those sites.

For anyone who is wondering, a mentor made a call for me to Rappahannock, and the training director was out this whole week and will be returning on Monday, so I'm not expecting to hear from them until later in the week, if at all.

I wish everyone the best of luck! I'll definitely post if/when I hear from other sites and hope everyone else does the same so we can at least be saved the agony of waiting and wondering about sites who don't contact with rejections.

If you've heard from any of the above sites, please let me know!

Thanks!

SUNY-Buffalo is making calls today.

Linds, I'm waiting on several sites on your list as well.

I'm waiting on these sites as well. Kinda surprised I didn't hear from Allendale 🙁

PS - for those who have an "interview" with Manatee Glens/Children's Home, the facebook group is now up (check your e-mail) - we have to request (via Facebook) to join.

The TD at Comprehensive Outpatient Services said that they were interviewing <10 applicants from the hundred applications they received

(2) I'm curious about how many interviews people had who didn't match. I had 9 (which involved driving through 2 snowstorms, getting 2 stomach viruses, spending >15% of my annual income, & of course getting my hopes up).

(4) People had mentioned emailing TDs at sites where they interviewed and didn't match for feedback so they could improve in the intervening year. Does anybody think emailing a TD would influence your application one way or another the following year if you chose to reapply? I wouldn't want to hurt my chances of going to my top choice next year by asking them what went wrong this year.

Anyway, I'm really appreciative of this forum and those who have posted either with their support or their shared experiences. I'm in my fifth year this year. I applied last year and only got 2 interviews so not matching wasn't a surprise. Not matching 2 years in a row, with 9 interviews, some at very competitive sites, and positive feedback from 2 of my top 3 choices (the competitive sites needless to say), however, is rather soul-crushing. It makes me wonder if I really am just an awful interviewee. I'm on the more shy/quiet side in initial encounters with people so I worked hard at not appearing that way, but perhaps not hard enough.

I had 5 interviews, and this was also my second time around. I agree with what was said earlier, you can't put matching all on yourself. I imagine, by the time TDs get to he 111th application they probably start tossing them into the "interview" and "reject" piles rather ambiguously, based on minor details, or how your application "feels." The time/man power just isn't there to thoroughly go through each carefully enough to guarantee they really only interview the best of the best.

That said, something can always be improved and I think asking for feedback, from the standpoint of wanting to grow as a clinician, etc, can only make you more desirable. Sites want people who are looking to improve themselves and grow.

Just dropping in to check on how eveyone was doing and see your updates on site notifications, etc. Have been thinking a lot about all of my fellow SDNers and hoping/wishing for the best outcome for each of you participating in Phase II. Will keep checking back often. Try to take it day by day and remember to "just keep swimming" (in case you were curious, Finding Nemo was on earlier). 🙂

I wish I could just ESCAP-E!

LindsPsyD, I have interviews with the Mental Health Association of Westchester County and Penn-Ohio Psychology Internship Program this week.

Good luck to everyone this week. I can't imagine how hard it must be to go through the stress that was the APPIC match process all over again. I have an even tougher time comprehending what it would be like to have to have not matched 2 years in a row (although I do believe there was someone on the board last year who was in it for a 3rd time) and to still be facing some scary odds.

I would at least hope that employers and post-docs now realize that not having the coveted APA internship is no longer a sign that someone's training or personality is subpar. I think employers, post-docs, and academics should start realizing that people shouldn't have to put their life on hold for a year (sometimes longer) just to get an accredited internship for the degree, which they have, by and large, already earned by this juncture. Some of us have an actual life that we want to get a start on (marriage, kids, a SAVINGS/RETIREMENT ACCOUNT!)

Hoping to wake up to more news... One of the perks of being on PST 🙂
Good luck to everyone this week!

Good luck to everyone this week! Seems like there are still quite a few sites left to hear from, so I'll be keeping my fingers crossed!

First news of the day (for me) - mass e-mail rejection from Duke. I knew they were a long shot for me, but it still stings a little bit!

Me too 🙁
Just waiting on ICFH and Harvard. Doesn't seem like anyone has heard from either yet?

Nope, haven't heard from them yet. Still waiting on both of them, Miami-Dade and also Synchrony of Visalia. Hope we get news today...

I'm waiting on ICFH, Harvard (extreme long shot for me), Miami-Dade, and Rappahannock (though someone mentioned earlier that the Rappa. TD was out all last week so I'm guessing they might jump in tomorrow, if not later this week). Oh and Clifford Beers too...though I think someone has heard from them already?

Someone on SDN has heard from Clifford Beers?

Hi all-

Happy Monday. I figured since we are one short week away from submitting our rank lists, I'd put some feeders out there (again). It sounds like a bunch of us are waiting to hear from the same sites, so I hope this post proves helpful to many.

Has anyone heard anything (yay or nay) from the following sites:

Humboldt Unified School District
Synchrony of Visalia
Clifford Beers
Park Place Behavioral Health
Institute for Child & Family Health
Pennsylvania Counseling Services
IMCES
Miami Dade DHS
U of CA, Riverside
U of the Pacific
Metro State

Thanks in advance!

AGStudent--I received an interview from Park Place (in person) but am waiting on many of the sites you are

Thank you for letting me know. Just curious, when did you receive that interview? Congrats, btw 🙂

Please let me know if Im mispercieving, as I am keeping up with you guys on phase II out of curiousity, but it seems as though the interviews havent exactly flooded in for most? This is also the feeling I get when looking at the recent intern-network emails. In the inital match I think there were quite a few people with 8, 9, and 10 interviews. This time around it seems like that isnt not happening.

With the process drawing to a close, does anyone have any strong opinions about phase II?

I had 9 interviews the first time and 3 this time so far. Because of the numbers of spots (especially APA accredited ones) compared to the number of programs the odds are kind of worse for getting interviews. However, this is much much better than Clearinghouse. I emailed people last year within the first few hours of the list of available positions being posted and they replied that they had already filled their spots. This way at least offers more equality and less who-knows-who back door entry into the available positions. So, it stinks, but it is a big improvement, nonetheless.

It also makes sense to me that programs are filling fewer spots from a pool of more applicants in much shorter time span for interviews, so that would pull for fewer offers per capita and per site I think. (Stats/probablities are not my strength however, this is just a guess.)

I'd say this is fairly accurate. I think people are getting fewer interviews this round in general. In phase I, I applied to 16 APA sites (though one withdrew from the match due to funding loss right around their application deadline). I received 7 interviews for a total of 10 tracks. This Phase, I applied to 21 sites (APA, APPIC, and one CPA) and I have 5 (3 APA, 2 APPIC) interviews for 6 tracks thus far and I'm waiting to hear back from 4 sites or so (guessing, since they don't have to send out rejections this round).

I like Phase II more than Clearinghouse, but I think there are some kinks that still need to be worked out (I think sites should have to send out rejections, *maybe* have a notification deadline though I understand all the sites were swamped with applications).

Here's one way to stand out as an applicant (though I wouldn't recommend it) - I had a phone interview today with a TD and when I answered, they said they had called me 3 times and the first 2 times it said my number was disconnected :scared:. They were about to give up entirely and shoot me an e-mail but figured they'd try one last time (thank goodness). I've had phone conversations and texts using this number (it's a cell phone) earlier today without any problems and I made a friend call me to make sure they could get through - no problems there. I'm hoping that perhaps the person dialed the same wrong number twice in a row and on the third try they used the right number? 😕 I *REALLY* hope that was a one-time incident/fluke. Phone is working properly, bill is paid, have plenty of minutes left...I have no idea what happened. 🙁

Just out of curiosity, is it mandated that sites who have unfilled slots participate in Phase II? Or can those sites opt out if they prefer to have the slot go unfilled?

I ask because I wonder if some may prefer to go unfilled than actually fill that slot... some of these openings are really, really circumscribed (e.g., the research track slot at Brown), and I could see faculty being particularly choosy about who to interview and how many to interview. Although that wouldn't completely explain the slower pace of interviews in Phase II, it might provide a bit of context?

The "Late Breaking News" on APPIC has a list of sites that opted out. I *think* sites are automatically enrolled in Phase II if they have unfilled spots but any of them can opt out if they want (for example, Brown's child track opted out and the spot will just go unfilled for a year).

It seems that some sites are set on filling all their spots period, while others seem to be of the mindset that they'll get someone who is a fantastic fit or they will leave the position empty for a year. Some sites (Baylory, Harvard, Duke, UC Davis all come to mind) could probably be quite selective as they are swamped with apps and can toss out a lot of them, saving only their top 5-10 apps for 1 spot. People are going to rank those sites regardless, so they can afford to be more choosy than some others.

Anyone with unfilled positions that is not participating must have APPIC Board approval to withdraw. I expect the most common cause is funding uncertainty or staffing cuts that change supervisory resources.

So... I have a feeling I'm not going to hear from many of the sites I'm still waiting on, but I do feel I'm a great fit for VAs... I've heard from 2 already, but I'd still love to hear from the San Diego VA/Consortium, the Maryland VA/Consortium, and the Vermont VA...

Has anyone heard from any of these in either direction? Thanks! 🙂

I really think they should have limited the number of sites we can apply to for phase 2. I mean seriously, 100+ apps for 1 position is ridiculous. How many positions should we expect will be around for clearinghouse?

I'm curious to know how many applicants sites are typically interviewing this phase. I've heard some sites are interviewing 10 and others 55. Hoping that the majority of sites are limiting the number of interviews so those interviewing have a chance...

I heard from Park Place too. They're offering interviews on Monday 3/21, which is when ranks are due. So far today I've gotten a rejection from Duke and an interview invite from BC Children's Hospital.

Blindchaos, I can relate to your phone difficulties. I had 4 interviews today and in the first one my phone hung up 3 times. In the third one my phone hung up twice 🙁 Mortifying and perplexing.

I wonder too, but I'm afraid to ask training directors. Some will volunteer the information (e.g., Wasatch had 279 applicants for 2 positions and invited 15 people to interview, whereas Manatee Glens is considering 50+ people). Otherwise, it's hard to know.

I haven't heard from any of them either.

(I interviewed at UCSD/VAMHS for different position the first time around. Don't know if that would make me more or less likely to get one this time around though.)

I honestly feel there needs to be some type of limit imposed for Phase I applications as well, or at least some change to the current system. With the process having been completely computerized for the first time this year, the average number of applications per applicant seems to have jumped significantly. Even just three or four years ago, I feel as though it was relatively rare for a student to apply to more than perhaps 10 or 12 sites. This past year, I don't know if I heard a single person (myself included) who applied to fewer than 15.

Part of this can no doubt be blamed on the growing imbalance, as well as APPIC's own indirect suggestion to apply to 15 locations (per the matching stats and rate hike afterward). However, I can't help but wonder if this increased number of applications impacted the match, as it's likely something sites haven't had to deal to this degree before.

Ugh! I can't believe they would interview on the rank list deadline date!!! And I can't believe we still haven't heard from the four places I am still waiting to hear from! I just want to know one way or the other...

Got an interview at Coalinga State Hospital still waiting to hear from:
Federal Beurea of Prisons-Lexington, KY
Ky Dept. of Corrections
University of Tennessee
Saskatoon
St James Hospital
Kane County Diagnostic
Christian Psychotherapy

This past year, I don't know if I heard a single person (myself included) who applied to fewer than 15.

I actually know quite a few people who were limited geographically and applied to less than ten sites. Two of them only applied to five sites. And both of them matched. I wish I was that lucky... but I have to admit that I did choose to apply to very competitive sites in phase one. I'm just happy that I got some interviews!!!

Does APPIC keep track of the average number of applications submitted per applicant? I'd imagine they have access to the total number of applications in addition to the total number of applicants, so if nothing else, it'd be interesting to see how those data looked this year compared to years past.

I could be completely wrong, or I may just have happened to speak with the subset of individuals submitting large (20-25+) numbers of apps. However, that was just the overall feeling I got throughout this process.

I'm wondering if, given the large number of applications to US sites (because they likely have more applicants), TDs have discarded some applications based on citizenship. So, if I may ask, are there any Canadian applicants who applied to US sites in Phase II and how are you doing in terms of interviews?

Has anyone who got an interview with Wasatch (utah) had any trouble getting in touch with the TD? We played phone tag on last Tuesday without successfully reaching each other, and now I haven't heard back and still cannot reach him. Any advice? I'm trying to be patient but I'm worried my interview offer has been somewhat retracted! Thanks

Also, does anyone have any helpful comments on what the Boise VA phone interview was like? Any thoughts are appreciated 🙂

Hello, everyone! I just recently found this forum, and I was very impressed by everyone's support for each other. Like many others, I unfortunately did not match in Phase I, and I am navigating through Phase II. As I am the only one in my cohort who did not match, I am left with a lot of questions, that perhaps you would be kind enough to help with. Did anyone else apply to forensic sites? I am waiting on many sites, but I am especially anxious about Tulane, Lexington Federal Medical Center, and Northeast Oklahoma. Has anyone heard from them?

I heard from Ohio Psych and Vermont VA last week, if that helps anyone.

Thanks, and good luck to all!

Got an interview at Coalinga State Hospital ...

PsychAnime, if you don't mind me asking, did they contact you by email? Are you interviewing in person or phone?

Thanks!!😳

They called me today- they're interviewing on Wednesday and Thursday via phone. Good luck!

I can't believe how many people haven't heard anything from a number of sites. Seems like it would be a bit easier if we were at least told "no" rather than waiting around. I think us phase 2'ers have done enough of that already 😉

Agreed. I think an email one way or the other by a certain date (like this Wednesday) would have been a fair request to make of the TDs.

On a related note, on behalf of the site TDs, perhaps limiting the number of sites applicants could apply to would also be fair & may lessen the amount of work sites have to do. For example, I applied to just over 30 sites. All of the sites I have interviews at are sites within the top 15 of sites I would have applied to anyways this round.

I agree, though, that it would be nice if sites would just let us know one way or the other  Good luck with remaining sites & interviews!!!

I received an interview call from SUNY Buffalo today, and my cohort-mate got a call from Harvard/Cambridge Health (but I did not 🙁 ). Aside from that, crickets. Anyone else hear from anywhere today? I'm particularly wondering about:
